About this house rental
Built on a knoll that inspired its design sits a house of stone overlooking Lake Michigan, its architect Earl Young called it home for over 30 years. Earl Young designed and built this mushroom house for his own family and he chose the best spot in Charlevoix to do so! On the peak of town across from Lake Michigan, you feel like you’re at a private retreat on your back deck up two stories high. You can see the sky changing colors from the front windows and hear the lake rolling too. This home is a perfectly situated work of art, a living museum. Single floor layout with two fireplaces and 3 full baths, Earl Young’s glass dining room table, original layout and tile work. A perfect escape! A home unlike any other, magical and inspiring, one of the greatest houses in Michigan if not the country.
Across the street from Lake Michigan Beach with the famous red lighthouse where you can walk everywhere!!! Boutiques, restaurants and bars are all only a couple blocks walk. Parks are close by at the beach and library. Completely ideal setting.
We offer our guests all that you need during your stay to make it as relaxing and worry-free as possible. Fully equipped kitchen, new linens, beach towels, towels, paper towel, toilet paper, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, Samsung Frame smart television connects you to your Netflix account, Spectrum cable television, Sonos, WiFi, a huge fireplace framed in gorgeous stone makes it feel like a fairy tale. You won’t want to leave the peaceful scene of Lake Michigan right out the large front window!
The house is so interesting - it’s a U shape. The twin bedroom is at one end of the U and the other two bedrooms at the opposite end of the house. In fact, to get to the king bedroom one must walk through the side of the queen bedroom which also serves as a hallway. There is a bathroom in between the king and queen rooms. Accordion style doors are throughout the house as Earl designed houses to make absolute best use of the space. All of this adds to the fun of staying at a mushroom house!
Since the Mushroom Houses are famous tourist sites, you will have people outside in the road taking pictures of the house. We like the excitement of being a part of Charlevoix history!!
A review left from a guest in March perfectly sums up our home:
This place is simply UNREAL. I'm extremely OCD/germaphobic, so my definition of clean is a bit unrealistic. But this place was truly SPOTLESS, and absolutely perfect in every detail. The home is stunning, and truly extraordinary...a genuine living piece of art and history. Every inch of the home is pristine, and very well set-up for an easy and relaxed experience.
Everything is so thoughtful, the Nespresso, fully stocked with every flavor imaginable and sugar/sweetener, pretty much everything at your fingertips.
The king bed is CRAZY comfy, as are the pillows and blankets. Sparkling clean, but lush and soft and just delightful. Really nice towels, sheets...every amenity is high end. The decor is gorgeous - streamlined but rich and elegant and just lovely.
The location is unreal. You are truly within a few feet of the water, but protected by a wooded area, so the walk to the beach is minutes. It is quiet and insulated, for a genuinely peaceful experience. You can walk down Park Avenue to several lovely restaurants for carry- out or dine-in, steps from the most charming little downtown area, but distant enough that it's downright bucolic.
The highlights of the home are the beautiful fireplace and the outdoor deck area. The fireplace puts off so much warmth, the room is enormous, but so well laid out, it manages to be open and expansive but also cozy. On our one rainy day we just had a movie marathon in that lovely, restful, snug room...precious family time. The back porch is just charming, with a very unique design, cozy and private but picturesque...simply gorgeous.
The value is extraordinary, this home is spacious and comfortable and just so special. It feels like the quality of the original 50s materials, but somehow with no wear and tear. It's quality + clean + artistry = magic.

The history, the comfort, the cleanliness, the location, the decor…all were perfect. This is a very charming place to stay. You feel the history but with all the modern conveniences. We particularly liked the magnificent living room fireplace and the outdoor patio area. Communication with the host and information provided were all wonderful. We enjoyed exploring the town and loved Terry’s for dinner and Smoke on the Water for breakfast. We were disappointed in the Weathervane Restaurant but loved seeing Earl’s fireplace. We would definitely love to come back.

We enjoyed our stay and the uniqueness of the mushroom house. Beautiful lake view! Quiet lovely street.
Many “ mushroom tour” buses went by daily and were interested in our house…kind of fun at first but became a little annoying. We felt we couldn’t go outside without someone looking at us.
Also only the master bedroom was air conditioned. We had two couples so one stayed in master and the other in the bedroom on the other end of the house. It wasn’t air conditioned…our week of stay the temperatures were in the upper 80s. They had many fans running when we got there but unfortunately we never could really get the house temp on one side below 78. Very warm and humid inside.
Overall we enjoyed our stay in the mushroom house…couldn’t beat the lovely historic street and beautiful view of Lake Michigan.

This was a great place for us. The mid-Century modern appointments are beautiful and the location is excellent -- close to town and steps away from the Lake Michigan beach and pier. But the bedroom configuration is extremely odd and won't work for many groups. We had two couples and one stayed in the bedroom with the twin beds to achieve privacy. Please read the property description carefully before you book.

The historic, unique house is a treat. Yes, it has its quirks (low ceilings, some small rooms) but the living room and patio are great gathering places, and the location is unbeatable.

What an amazing property! We had the best girls weekend, touring the area , walking the beach, and then rafting the Jordan River.
We loved loved loved this house! So much charm.
Plenty of room for the 6 of us girls!
Also close to town so we could walk to local shops and dining.

This charming property has it all! It’s in a great location, the view is incredible, and the owner has thought of everything to elevate your stay to ensure everyone is comfortable and even feels a little spoiled (that fireplace is the thing of dreams). On top of that, you’re literally staying in a place with such a special historical significance, but with enough modern touches to make it feel that much more special. We are already making plans to make a visit to this house a yearly tradition.

Lovely property/home; Plenty of room. Kitchen was a little cozy. But it was hardly an issue. Lots of unique details to enjoy. This was the 3rd mushroom house I've stayed at. It did not disappoint the slightest.

This place is awesome! The hosts are very responsive and the property is lovely. This is an original Earl Young property and served as his own home for many decades as such the house is very interesting. The house was clean and well maintained so we had a very comfortable stay. The location is lovely with easy (walkable) access the downtown Charlevoix and the beach is literally across the street. We found it a little challenging to have to walk through our grown daughter's bedroom to access the master bedroom, but that was not a deal breaker. The fact that it was summer and we could spend most of our home time on the fabulous back deck was a true plus. We are bikers and enjoyed taking the Little Traverse Wheelway to Petoskey.

We had an amazing weekend in beautiful home! We stayed in Charlevoix with another couple and wanted to unique home to stay in. This house went above and beyond. The location is spectacular, within walking distance to downtown and right across the street from the lake. Shawn was wonderful to work with at every step of the process. I would highly recommend this property if you are planning to stay in Charlevoix.

The history of the home, location, view and amenities made this the perfect home for our Girls Weekend! There was plenty of space for all of us and we loved being able to stay in the historic home previously occupied by Earl Young. We had fun finding and learning about the details of the home and had such fun waving at the tourists as they passed! Thank you for sharing your home with us!

We absolutely loved the house, with all of the snow it was beautiful. Also the inside of the home was very neat with all of the hidden storage and built ins. Of all the cool things to see in the home my girlfriend loved the toaster and the main fireplace of course. The mantel piece looks like the moon at night that was very cleaver. I would definitely recommend anyone staying here.

We planned a long weekend skiing at Boyne for school break and found Shawn’s property and fell in love with the architecture and location. We were not disappointed- the Earl Young home has been lovingly maintained and had every comfort to make our stay seamless. Morning coffee on the window seat looking out at the Lake and lighthouse was my favorite and each night we all gathered in the great room in front of the fireplace and watched movies together. It was wonderful

What an amazing property, we really enjoyed learning about the neighborhood homes and Earl Young. This home was perfect for our stay, and we enjoyed the separate sleeping areas and outdoor patio. The beach is right across the street and great Petoskey stone hunting! The hosts have thought of everything, all you need to bring is your overnight bag. Thank you for sharing a piece of Charleviox history and inviting guests to enjoy your beautiful home!

Cooler Temps
Because of 2 golf friends that have summer homes in Charlevoix and hearing all about the beautiful weather they have unlike Texas (ugh, we had to come back and face it) we have wanted to go for a few years. Due to one thing or another (illness and Covid) this WAS the summer we were going to go. The day we arrived it was 86* and people were not happy and said this just never happens. I said what heat?? Being from Texas that's a cold front! Anyway, going forward for the week it just kept getting better and better. The house was Quirky, original and wonderful (fyi, no central air but unit in the master bedroom, electric fans in every room). We never got to enjoy the firepit but enjoyed the fireplace a couple of mornings having our coffee. The owners are super quick to reply with any suggestions or answers to our questions (had a small issue with the cable tv....might have to reset the app). There is a really nice beach with amazing views for sunsets or swimming if it's warm enough within walking distance (very close). We didn't cook at all except we had a couple of quick breakfasts (too much to see and do) but the kitchen is well stocked. Regular coffee maker is in the pantry across from kitchen. Didn't find it until day before we left but they also had a Nespresso. I'm sure there is so much more I'm leaving out and feel bad about that but the four of us had a wonderful stay in this historic home. We feel really lucky to have found it.
Oh yeah.....Be sure and wave to all the tourist that come by on the Mushroom House tour!

Artful Getaway
This beautiful home provides a cozy, elegant, and artful environment to relax and unwind. The heated floors, beautiful fireplace, and sophisticated décor made our stay memorable and most enjoyable. Very clean accommodations - and excellent Nespresso coffee too! Owner provides effective and efficient communication during the booking and check-in process. Would stay there again!

Earl Young's mushroom home
This was my first experience with Vbro and all went well. The home did not disappoint. I felt Mr. & Mrs. Young's presents in every room. The fireplace was awesome and the views are stupendous. Charlevoix is a charming village with warm and personable residents.

Gals Up North Weekend
Loved this quirky hobbit! Especially the terrace! Had a birthday dinner out there under the stars! Comfy beds! Plenty of towels! Close to town! Wish we had more time. So much to do. Shawn was easy to reach.

Stepping back in Time
Loved the house and property. It was fun to "step back in time". My only negative was the arrangement of the bedrooms. We had 3 couples and the couple using the master bedroom had to go through another bedroom to get to their bedroom. It was a little uncomfortable at times but for a family it should'nt be a problem. Fabulous atmosphere. A great time was had by all.

Beautiful and unique stay!
We were looking for a unique rental near both the beach and downtown Charlevoix. We got that and so much more! What a unique and fun experience it was to stay at the Mushroom House. Every day we discovered a new curiosity about the home and loved it even more - and, yes, the proximity to both the beach and the ice cream shops in Charlevoix were a huge hit with my young sons.

One of the best VRBO experiences we have ever had! Highly recommend to anyone.
Such a beautiful, unique and historic property. The fact that we could walk across the street every night to the beach to watch the sunset was a cherry on the top. The back deck was private and peaceful. Most comfortable beds that provided such a great night sleep too. Nothing but perfect for our stay!
