About this cottage rental
Englefield is located in Ventnor, which is situated on south coast of the island positioned above Bonchurch on the eastern fringe.
This chalet bungalow has 2 double bedrooms, twin bedroom, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, lounge and sunroom with a large bay window with fantastic sea views.
At the front of the house, there is a car parking bay (for one car) and a stunning terrace where you can soak up the spectacular seascape and to the rear, there is a beautifully maintained garden that leads onto downland.
Situated on the outskirts of Ventnor, Bonchurch is a beautiful village, nestling on the side of St Boniface down, leading down to the sea. The seafront has a safe shingle/sand beach with rock pools, ideal for children. From the shore you can take a level walk along the revetment towards Ventnor, passing Wheelers Bay and ending in the harbour where you can purchase the catch of the day. In the village itself is a large wildlife pond, home to ducks, herons and carp, surrounded by trees and plants and floodlit at night, this is a magical place to sit and relax. For dining out within the village The Bonchurch Inn offers excellent cuisine.
Old St Boniface Church in Bonchurch dates from the 11th century, with the bell cote dating from the 16th century as does the bell. The south porch was added in the 19th century. It was replaced by St. Boniface Church in 1848. After the new church was built the old church went into a long sleep and wasn't used for decades.
The Victorian town of Ventnor benefits from a main shopping street, with a range of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs. The Esplanade has a crescent shaped sand and shingle beach and a small harbour, where fresh seafood can be purchased. There are several cafes and pubs; the popular ‘Spyglass Inn' enjoys outstanding sea views and family entertainment. The Smoking Lobster with its Asian seafood fusion food is a great place to relax and enjoy the superb views across the English Channel. Alternatively stroll along the Cliff Path to the famous Ventnor Botanical Gardens and down towards the picturesque Steephill Cove with its delightful seafood restaurants, whilst admiring the magnificent coastal scenery.
There are a number of great restaurants in Ventnor including Tramezzini, The Bistro, Smoking Lobster, Tour du Monde and Cantina along with Chinese and Indian restaurants and fish and chip shops. Many of the cafes provide take-aways.
Ventnor Botanic Garden lies in the remarkable microclimate at the heart of the famous 'Undercliff.' This unique garden is protected from the cold northerly winds by chalk downs. In addition to enjoying the lovely gardens, it also hosts events and exhibitions and there is a restaurant serving local produce, and Café on-site for refreshments; lunch or coffee and cake!
Please note that the access to Englefield involves a number of steps and a sloped pathway so may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues.

Once again Englefield did not disappoint - everything was as good as we expected, despite the road closure further along Leeson Road. This created no problems for us at all, in fact the diversions were on very scenic routes much enjoyed by us all!
The weather wasn't perfect, but when you have everything you need at the property, it did not detract from our stay.
We leave Englefied feeling relaxed and looking forward to our return visit the next year. Roll on 2025!

Terrific views from the front of the house. House up a very steep slope from the parking which is at road level. Also a number of steep steps to negotiate. Bathroom very small and the toilet not ventilated in any way. Large number of collectables throughout the house, very steep rear garden. Not suitable for people with mobility issues.

A spacious bungalow with a huge front view of the sea and a rear view of the Downs. On a bus route if you dont want to drive each day, and within a short walk or drive to Bonchurch Inn where we had a lovely meal. A little old fashioned in some of its fittings , but this added to its charm for us and we have never stayed in a self cater which provided so much in the way of those small but helpful bits and pieces. Beautiful walks on the doorstep. Accessibility good apart from a slope up to the property, take it steady if mobility issues.

The best part of staying at Englefield was the view, uninterrupted sea views were perfect. These view meant that the house was up some steep steps and a steep path, it was ok for us but others with mobility problems might find this difficult.
The house itself was very nice and the most has been made with the use of space, this did mean that the downstairs loo and bathroom were small as was the kitchen although well stocked with everything you need to comfortably be able to cook proper meals. We loved the lazy susan on the dining room table.
The beds were what you expect in a holiday house, mattresses were a little hard but for some that is probably fine. The duvets on the beds were too thick for summer months (even this summer!) It would be good if alternatives were provided like a thinner quilt because the bed shams were not suitable.
The house contained interesting but rather too many (for my liking) nik naks which need to be dusted to avoid the odd cobwebs being missed.
Overall we spent a lovely week at Englefield.

I've rented holiday homes on the island for many years and thisnis absolutely my favourite.
It's a great size for 6 people, perfect location to head any direction on the island and has stunning views.
As an added bonus, the host had baked a lovely cake for us and left a pint of milk so we could make a brew. Great touch!
Have rebooked for next year already!

Englefield is the perfect place for a self-catering holiday on the Isle of Wight. The accommodation is superb and regularly updated (we have stayed there for several holidays) and has everything you need for a lovely, relaxing break. The bungalow overlooks the sea and we spend a long time identifying the many boats that sail past. The town of Ventnor is just a walk away, with several good places to eat. Bonchurch Inn is close by and the food there is excellent.

Englefield is a well proportioned comfortable holiday let with beautiful views over the sea to the front and the downs at the back .
Bedrooms have plenty of storage and very comfy beds , kitchen and utility rooms were well equipped and the WiFi was excellent we particularly enjoyed sitting outside the front with a cup of tea taking in the views and sea air , ditto with a glass of wine !
I would have no hesitation in recommending Englefield .
Thank you .

Great location with fantastic views. The bus stop was very close to the property with frequent service.

Englefield is a lovely 20s bungalow which has had some extension adding an attic room and bathroom and a utility room downstairs. We love this property and relax as soon as we enter! The views could not be surpassed - unlimited sea from the front and the Downs at the back. It has a calming atmosphere and contains everything we need. Please do not change anything!

Englefield has everything we need for a relaxing break whatever the weather. This year was exceptional though as we had wall to wall sunshine for the whole week. Perfect for just sitting in the garden, reading and looking out over the sea, identifying the vessels sailing by - how much more relaxing could a holiday be?
However, if you want to venture out there is so much to do and the Island's bus service is very good if you would prefer not to use the car.
There are several places to eat locally, in particular the Bistro at London House - newly opened but the food and ambience are amazing.

Experience at englefield
Ideal location ,bus stops close by. We were able to get around the island, without worrying about parking.
Entrance to property was steep, so beware.
Not much worktop space in kitchen for the discerning cook.

Loved it .
The cottage was in a lovely location overlooking the sea. The view was fantastic ,especially on a clear night with the full moon shining on the water. The only downside to the cottage were the steps and steep path up to the door and the low ceilings in downstairs toilet and upstairs bathroom. Excellent base for exploring the island.

Location,Location, Location!
A characterful and very comfortable 1920s bungalow, splendidly situated, with spectacular views down to the sea and Bonchurch Down to. the rear. Our second visit and we hope it won't be our last!

A House with a View
This lovely 1920s bungalow has some of its original features and is very comfortable. We loved it! The best things about it were the views -unlimited sea from the front and straight up to the downs from the back. You are not aware of the main road below as it is in a dip. Lovely homemade Victoria Sandwich waiting for us on arrival. Food and welcome at The Bonchurch Inn also worthy of note!

2nd visit to Englefield
A great base to enjoy the island and the house provides you with everything you need. The house was clean but not to the standard of last year. The windows were filthy & there was a lot of cobwebs but the main parts of the house were immaculate.

Wonderful stay
We enjoyed our week at Englefield helped by the glorious weather. The house is comfortable, spacious and very well equipped. We ate outside for many meals and the views were fantastic. The bus to Ryde along the coast or Newport in the other direction stops almost outside. The walk into town is down a steep hill, and it’s a hard climb coming back but we found a free car park at Wheelers Bay which we used. We’d recommend the property.

Amazing view and a real home from home!
We had an amazing stay, starting with the magnificent view and gorgeous cake waiting for us! We felt at home right away - a real home from home! It was a great base to explore the island from. The only downside was we couldn't let the 3 children out the front garden, due to the drop to the road being too open to them.

Loved this property, the views are breathtaking regardless of the weather. It has so many quirky features, is really spacious and very well equipped. Great location for exploring. I have already rebooked!

Lovely accommodation with wonderful sea views
Englefield is the perfect place to stay, within walking distance of the town of Ventnor and with wonderful views of the sea where ships of all sorts can be seen throughout the day.
Englefield has everything you want to make sure your stay is relaxing and enjoyable.
There are usually several places to choose from to go out and eat, but Covid has meant that some have closed completely whilst others have reduced opening due to staff shortages. However Bonchurch Inn, a stones throw away from Englefield is excellent, lovely food and extremely helpful staff. If it's a takeaway you want or you're in need of something sweet then the Kitchen at London House is the one to go to. The food is just perfect and the staff are amazing.
Englefield is my go to place on the Isle of Wight - you can't beat it.

Family holiday
Had a fabulous stay with our son and family. Great location with sea views at front and hills behind with surprise goats n cows. Loads of space in and outside . Lots of quirky bits on property. Bit of a walk down to front n steep coming back so used car which was much easier with baby in tow. Would highly recommend 5*
