Excellent location.

Gate Cottage is in a cracking location, in the centre of beautiful Thaxted. Directly opposite the church. There are a number of local pubs and restaurants in easy walking distance from the cottage. We ate two nights at Parishers which we can heartily recommend, although they don't do late evening table times -more like 1830/1900/1930 etc. They also accommodated gluten free for me as a Coeliac. Thaxted is a lovely place to be in. Instructions were clear and we unloaded the car on the cobbles, parked in near by Margaret Street Car Park and walked back (2 mins). Likewise when we checked out, we left our luggage inside the door, parked on the cobbles again and loaded the car. Noise over night wasn't bad at all but you are aware of the traffic through the day.
We felt that the cottage had the absolute bare minimum of stuff in it which either suggested extreme penny pinching by the owners or just lack of time to properly check before we checked in but it did detract a little from our stay. We had just one loo roll which ran out after a day and a half so we resorted to tissues! There was a teaspoon of washing up liquid left in the bottle, so had a to buy a bottle and the hot water ran out after a day, so had a lukewarm shower. The cutlery and some of the crockery was dirty and there was a revolting well used dish washer sponge (how expensive is it to replace the dishwasher sponge?) under the sink, and a solitary j-cloth. Cooking is restricted to a toaster and a microwave plus the kettle. There were a few tea bags and some coffee sachets but I have had more in a Premier Inn! We were maybe spoiled as our last accommodation in Wales had fresh milk, bread and even orange juice left by the owner. The TV didn't appear to be connected to the Wifi so had to set this up and even though we got Netflix on night one we couldn't get it on night 2. There is also Amazon Prime that you can use. There doesn't appear to be a live TV connection - all streaming.

Proximity to town was great.. nice pub The Swan is virtually next door. Cute, compact & bijou upside down cottage. Bedroom on ground floor and sitting room upstairs. Lovely view of village church opposite. The village is super lovely & a great base to travel around.
Smaller than expected, no cooking facilities other than a microwave.. OK as we ate out.. The narrow staircase was quite steep..The shower tiles could do with bleaching .. a bit marked but nothing major..
Not much hot water.. seemed to run out quickly.. not enough for consecutive showers for hubby & I.

It was quaint. Well positioned, as we were attending a wedding. It is comfortable and very clean.
No hot water, couldn't have a shower, boiled the kettle, for a wash. It really needs sorting out, it was its only fault, but unfortunately a big fault.

Cute little place
Really comfy bed
Hosts were amazing
Loads of food spots about
Hot water didn’t get very hot and tan out quick (minor thing must have been bad timing)

Close to relatives
Price and minor supplies issues that was rectified immediately.

Everything was perfect, the cottage was beautiful.
We booked in emergency due to cancelled flight and airport closed due to snow. Katharine was very kind, she turned the heating on as soon as we booked (late in the evening) so that we found the flat warm.
She also brought us milk and biscuits the next morning. She was super nice about everything and even helped us find a taxi at 5am

A beautiful little cottage. Cosy lounge area with TV/Netflix, excellent bathroom, very comfortable bed. Brilliant location.
Could do with a couple of hooks in the bedroom.

1. Pleasant location, right opposite the amazing parish church.
2. Lovely carpet in living room and bedroom.
3. Stylishly fitted out.
4. Cottage has enormous potential.
1. Key box was located very high up in a hidden position behind a post. At 5ft 2 in, I could not possibly have reached it, seen the numbers or opened it. Fortunately I have a taller husband.
2. Immediately inside the lobby was a sign which said "Remove your shoes." Not very welcoming, and impossible for my husband with replacement hips.
3. Nowhere to hang or store clothes. Two large drawers out of three filled with spare bedding. Two hooks for coats in the lobby, which could not take hangers.
4. No oven or hob, - could not even boil an egg.
5. No table and chairs. Fortunately we had a picnic table and chairs in our car.
6. Complicated Wifi code had to be requested by telephone. }
7. No information on how to access the television.} Information folder only gave menus from local takeaways.
8. Mould on the ceiling of the shower room, and in the shower cubicle.
9. Very steep staircase.
10. No parking available when we needed to load our car to leave. Quite a trek to public car park with cases, picnic bags, and table and chairs.
11. No response at all from owners when given feedback directly by email, or asked a question before arrival.

Lovely place. The place is exceptionally clean. The view is excellent. Katharine and Ben are very helpful. We really appreciate that they are always willing to accommodate our needs. Will definitely choose to stay here again once we are back to Thaxted.

Very central location. Lovely area to explore. Delightful hosts; friendly and helpful. Comfortable beds. Comfortable sitting space. Cosy carpeting.
I would describe this accommodation as a hybrid - not quite self-catering. Its size probably doesn't lend itself to a fully equipped kitchen with a table to eat it. It was fine for breakfasts and microwave meals. The stairs were a bit scary (narrow and shallow front to back). We found it difficult to watch live programmes on the TV...probably our own lack of tech savviness.

A quaint little cottage within walking distance of bars

In the heart of the village, with shops, pubs, eateries and the windmill a stones through away. Ben was very friendly and gave my partner a chair for sitting out in the courtyard. He asked if everything was ok for us and if we needed anything.
Nothing

Comfortable bedroom and nice to have a separate lounge area
It was alright for us but there should be a warning that the stairs are very steep. Some elderly or less agile person would find them very hard. Especially coming down.
4.3
superb decor, extremely comfortable bed, spacious rooms
kitchen equipment could be cleaner and better organised. more than one hook needed for hanging up clothes.
Dangerous step in hallway from bedroom to hall, not easy to see in the middle of the night!

it was in a handy position for the town and visiting our family who live close by.
it lacked something…. very basic and felt like it needed a bit of tlc.
4.3
The location was great and very convenient to our event.
Sadly I did not check on accessibility before booking. Both my husband and I have limited mobility.
The steep stairs in the cottage were daunting very difficult for us ascend and descend.
If we were younger and fitter it would not have been a problem.
4.3
period property beautifully restored.
only thing was the lack of a table to eat from in the lounge/kitchen
4.3
The cleanses was very good and location was just right for the area.
It lacked facilities for someone who’s self catering due to not having a cooker/hob of any sort and due most please be closed on a Sunday/Monday you have to travel out to get most food.
4.3
Very cosy little cottage, nice and warm
There was no hot water after the first day.
4.3
Unique location, opposite the church, in a historic building. Excellent communication throughout. Cosy, comfortable and had everything we needed for a short stay.
There was a bit of noise of planes taking off/landing from Stansted airport, plus from cars on the road outside, though this didn't affect us hugely as it wasn't noticeable through the night. A small dining chair/table set would have been preferable to eating at a tray table from the sofa. We had to request the WiFi password even though the TV was connected up to the WiFi. But overall this was a good deal for the price/location and gave us the feel of a cottage holiday but with the convenience/flexible booking options of a hotel.
