About this cottage rental
Rhiw Goch Cottage is a spacious detached one bedroom stone-built cottage dating from the 18th century or earlier. It has a wood burner which also provides central heating. Our guests love the cottage for it's rustic charm and beautiful gardens with landscaped areas, secluded glades and viewpoints over the valley set in 17 acres of craggy ancient woodland full of wildlife. About 4 miles from Betws-y-Coed, it's well placed to explore Snowdonia but also well off the beaten track.
The cottage is detached from the main house across a courtyard and you're welcome to enjoy the gardens and picnic tables. It has it's own parking space and patio plus table and chairs with views over the garden. We welcome couples, groups of friends or families with children over the age of 10. It is not suitable for unsupervised younger children due to ponds and craggy rocks.
There is one large en suite bedroom with one kingsize bed and an adult size bunk bed (max weight on top 12 stone, 170lb, 75kg). The rest of the cottage is open plan. There is a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge with small freezer compartment, toaster, oven and hob. The living room has the wood burner, a 2 seater sofa and 2 easy chairs, a FreeSat TV (April to September only) and a DVD-Blu Ray player. The dining room has a large table for 4 people and a 2 seater sofa, where you can enjoy view of the gardens through a large window.
The cottage is heated mostly by the wood burner which runs 3 radiators. It will be ready laid for you to light and enough wood is supplied for a fire every evening. There are additional electric heaters and an electric shower. The main living areas have slate floors (which can be cold without indoor shoes). Bedding and tea towels are provided; TOWELS ARE NOT ROUTINELY PROVIDED BUT ARE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Washing up liquid, sponge cloths and kitchen roll are provided for the kitchen and sanitising hand wash and toilet rolls in the bathroom. No other toiletries are provided.
The property is on a quiet hillside surrounded by woodland in the Lledr valley. Pont-y-Pant train station is roughly ½ a mile away. The nearest village is Dolwyddelan a 5 min drive away which has a Spar shop and pub - these are not within walking distance as there is no footpath along the A470.
The cottage is great for walkers and mountain bikers, with woodland trails round Llyn Elsi (lake) straight from the door, the Gwydir Forest (Marin) Trails and Penmachno trails are nearby and the brilliant Coed-y-Brenin trails are a 30 min drive. Pen-y-Pass for walking Snowdon is about a 20 mins drive and the mountain walks up Moel Siabod start with a long walk or a 5 min drive. There is a rhyolite crag called Rhiw Goch Boulders with some good climbing a short walk from the cottage.
Betws-y-Coed is 4 miles away with good cafes, restaurants and shops. Zipworld Fforest and Slate Caverns are a short drive away. Blaenau Ffestiniog is famed for its steam railway and is about 7 miles away as is Llanrwst for food shopping. Anglesey with it’s stunning beaches and Portmerion tourist village are both a 40 min drive.
A good mobile signal may require a walk into the gardens (by which time you’ll have forgotten all about that call you need to make!) and wifi is provided for the cottage, but under your control to turn on or off.
FOR THE LESS ABLE BODIED: unfortunately we cannot accept bookings for the anyone in your party who cannot climb through the ground floor bedroom window. This is due to current fire regulations. The bedroom is and "inner room" with access to the exit door only through another room.

Excellent accommodation. It is self catering - meaning not even tea or coffee provided!!! This was unclear when we booked. So had to drive into Betws y Coed to find food after a long trip. Also the host’s directions to find the place were very unclear. An extremely hard to find turn off from the A470. Especially in the dark when in heavy rain!!!!

Remote and away from the crowds, this was an amazing spot for a get-away-from-it-all week.

Overall this is a very pleasant place in beautiful surroundings, but the location is not for the faint hearted. Situated up a very narrow lane with few passing places, best to take it slowly!
Our main criticism is that there were no basic provisions eg milk, tea bags, coffee etc. Having travelled 5 hours to get there, we had to go straight out to buy essentials.
We appreciate that there was no suggestion that anything would be provided but as it is a fairly remote location some basic supplies would have appreciated!

We spent a lovely peaceful week at the cottage and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet. It is a well furnished, very comfortable cottage with a lovely modern shower.
Location is splendid, even though the approach road/ lane is very narrow. Luckily we didn't meet another car on any of our journeys out or coming back.
Kerry and Peter were great hosts and always helpful if you needed anything (thanks for the use of the washing machine ).
Would love to visit again.

Stay in wales
The cottage is lovely, and surrounded by a beautiful garden. We found the single track road to get there rather daunting, and we’re constantly worried about meeting a car coming the other way. This only happened on our last day!

Lovely stay
We had a lovely stay in this very cosy cottage. We only stayed one night as part of our cycle trip but could have stayed longer! It was very clean and comfortable with a lovely fire which we needed. The bed and shower are great and the whole place is very peaceful.

Beautifully situated cottage in landscaped grounds
Beautifully situated cottage in grounds of a big house, landscaped with lovely shrubs and trees, with big views of mountains and a breathtaking situation high on the valley edge. Very quiet and away from it all.
The cottage is comfortable and everything works nicely. We appreciated the good shower. We really enjoyed having the big window by the dining table looking out onto the gardens. We were also fortunate with the weather to use the patio table to eat outside.
Kerry and Peter are helpful, friendly and accommodating, and they made us very welcome.
It is a good base for mountainbiking with Sarn Helen and Penmachno trails very close by.

Great place to get away from it all
A great place to get away from it all, as long as you don't mind living without wifi. The extensive garden is amazing - lots of corners to explore. There is easy access to all you need in Snowdonia, including walks direct from the property, and the train to Llandudno and Blaenau Festiniog via the small Pont-y-Pant station half a mile or so away.

Superb retreat in the hills.
So, so pleased we chose this property. Booking was easy and friendly and what a treat when we arrived. Absolute silence in the hills. Our smiles were testament to the choice we had made. Hosts were very friendly and welcoming and gave us plenty of space to enjoy the fabulous, vast gardens and surroundings, advising us on walks around the property and on the plateau behind the cottage, up the hill. We very much look forward to returning to this special place and being able to switch off from the pace of modern life.

Idyllic cottage in rural Wales
Cannot recommend highly enough. Kerry and Peter were both really welcoming. The cottage was exceptionally clean and with everything you could want. The gardens are amazing and it is so peaceful. The only downside is we only stayed for 1 night, could have done with a couple more!!
