The cabin was so relaxing and spacious for our family of four and pups! Shagg Pond was picturesque and climbing Bald Mountain was challenging and beautiful!
10.0 / 10.0
Shagg Pond is amazing, stunning view, calm water, loons, bald eagles, ducks, frogs, and tons of fishing. It’s a kid paradise. The property has plenty of boats to use, I think we explored every inch of water. The sandy beach is a short walk, worth it! Our kids played for hours and enjoyed the dock. The house is definitely a blast from the past but in a good way - it’s very clean and well maintained. The owner provided helpful amenities - I actually forgot our toothbrushes and was very happy to discover some provided for us! If you’re a plant nerd there’s tons of native wild plants and flowers all over the yard. Finally, I’m very thankful we were able to bring our dog, she’s a Pyrenees so she can almost never join us as a larger breed, we appreciated this so much! Overall, great stay. Thanks!

Everything was very outdated. Bathroom had mold.
Dock is in need of repairs.
The beach was horrible not very big at all only a few people could even fit on it.
The are no fish except very small one we were told they were chemically killed in the 50's and then brought back in the 90's.
The owner was very nice and did supply little things to help you be more comfortable.
Just not what we expected.

My family stayed for 4 nights, it wasn’t long enough at all. This location is so quiet and peaceful, the pond is serene. The house comes equipped with many boats and canoes so we spent a lot of time out on the water. The house was perfectly equipped with everything you’d need, and was very clean. Hot tub was the cherry on top; looking up at the sky from the tub at night you could see the Milky Way!

We wanted a vacation that was about relaxing, not doing a lot, and this was it. We loved how easy it was to get out for a paddle around the pond at any time. My kids enjoyed the hot tub, a couple of movies on the giant TV, and s'mores in the fire pit. We did a lot of reading and hanging out outside. It was really peaceful there.
We have a larger dog, which can limit options of where we stay. Appreciated being able to have him with us.
We didn't have cell service at the house, which is great for unplugging, but it made communicating with the host a little challenging. Ann was great at responding to my VRBO inbox messages to clear up the few questions we had once we arrived.

Spacious quiet cabin down bumpy dirt roads miles from population centers (and cell service). Fantastic fishing, helpful owner, very clean and reasonably well-stocked. Hot tub was in good condition, but lacked instructions (had to Google 'em). Internet was good for 1-2 devices but not for a family of technophiles; had to restart the router twice during the week. Beds were comfortable but small - master bedroom had a full, not a queen. All in all, a decent value for what we paid, but could use some refreshing.

Property was well maintained and very clean…. They thought of everything! All dishes and cooking wears you would need, towels, snacks. Very quiet in the area, 30 min to nearest grocery store or restaurant.

Loved listening to the loons on the quiet lake!

The communication for the property was excellent and responsive. We loved the seclusion and privacy of the property, although a larger vehicle would be recommended to get to the property. It was a peaceful getaway that allowed us to unplug. We loved the karaoke in the cabin and the use of the canoe and boat to use. We were out on the water daily.

The host is very accommodating with quick responses and obviously cares about the property and the guests. The house is clean and well-appointed. The property is naturally beautiful with direct view and access to the water.
This is the most serene, peaceful vacation week we’ve ever had. Because no motor boats are allowed on the pond, the sound of frogs and loons is broken only by the occasional voice drifting over the water.
We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Gorgeous home with great water view
The house was more beautiful than we expected. When we first entered the view took our breath away. The lake was so quiet and serene (there we no motor boats - just kayaks and canoes).
The owner was prompt with responses and so very helpful We hope to return again.

quiet retreat
Quiet and secluded. We enjoyed our stay very much. Make sure that your car can navigate unpaved roads - needed especially if the weather is wet or snowy.

Spacious, clean, nicely appointed
We stayed in the main cottage Oct 16 - 23, 2021. Extra clean. Large living areas and bedrooms. Kept warm during cool nights by forced air propane furnace and wood burning fireplace. Wonderful property and hosts. Super hiking trails less than 10 min walk from the property. Strong WIFI and internet connection. A great place to stay !

We enjoyed the relaxing pond view and time on the pond with the canoe provided. The cabin is somewhat remote and the cleanliness 4 stars had to do with daddy long legs not an unclean cabin. For those having to work while on vacation, the WiFi works great, but cell reception is spotty at times. But, you're supposed to be on vacation (sadly unlike my husband this trip). There is wonderful hiking close by, as well as charming farmers' markets - definitely stop and explore those! The town of Bethel was cute and a day in Portland should be on your agenda.

Perfect quiet get away
This location was great for our group of 8. The cabin was comfortable and the view of shagg pond from the porch made each morning coffee enjoyable to wake up too. Our group enjoyed cannoning on the lake and a hike on Bald mountain that is conveniently close. Our host was accommodating and reliable, making our overall stay great! Would come again !

Stunning Views
Honestly this home was perfect. I went up for a solo vacation, just myself and my two dogs. We had an amazing time. Other than to go out for groceries, I didn't have to leave the property, it had everything I needed. The sunrise over the water is STUNNING and ending each night in the hot tub listening to the loons was exactly the kind of relaxation I needed. I will definitely be keeping this one on my places to re-visit list!

would not recommend
The physical house was okay but the listing is missing a lot of info. Not only is the house equipped with cameras inside the house, the pond is not swimmable due to the overwhelming amount of leeches in the water. The shore is all muck, weeds, and tadpoles. The dock is unstable and falling apart. There was several boats and canoes available to be used which was nice, but probably the only good thing to the property. The hot tub was dirty, and never got above 80 degrees although you could set it to 102 degrees. The property is advertised as pet friendly but does not say there is a pet fee. But once leaving the house, i was sent a non negotiable payment of $50/dog on vrbo and owner reported me to VRBO. Once I payed the security deposit, I was then told I needed to sign a rental agreement- which I also think should be told before the house is booked! The dock is to be shared by Cabin #2 which was told in the ad but it didn’t allude to the fact that the neighbors walk down the driveway, and into the back yard. I personally would not recommend this property because of all of the untold, and misleading information.

Quiet Birthday Getaway
This was a beautiful little getaway. The house is wonderful the beds are a little small but very comfortable. There is everything you need while you are there but make sure you bring bug spray.!

Great place to unwind!
My family and I had a great time at this property. Ann was kind enough to greet us at the cabin with a very friendly quick meet and greet. We spent most of our time at the water. Fishing, boating, and swimming at the maintained beach area a short walk from the cabin. The view from the property dock is amazing. Bald mountain in the background and plenty of wildlife to pass the time. We even found a hiking trail down the street that leads up to the top of Bald mountain. We also enjoyed a few things we've never had in other vacation rentals. Hot tub and karaoke. Now with 2 teenagers, I knew the cabin alone would not keep our kids occupied so we planned a day to discover nearby Bethel. Overall a great location, great cabin, great experience.
