Since moving to England, my travel dreams have been to 1) visit the Cotswolds, 2) stay in a majestic old home, and 3) enjoy the countryside. Staying at Middle Gable has allowed me to check all three of those things off my list. Middle Gable is situated right off the main tourist road of Bourton-on-the-Water and couldn't be more perfect. It is exactly what the Cotswolds of my imagination looked like; a gorgeous old home with a beautifully maintained garden. The house was probably bigger than what my small family of three needed, but once I saw the giant four-poster bed in the master bedroom, I knew I had to stay there. We felt like royalty! The whole house is charming and I loved it. Even the neighbors were friendly and came out to chat while we were in the garden.
If traveling with a small child like we did, our little girl is 18 months, be aware that there are knick-knacks within arms reach. Other than that, I can fully recommend this to anyone looking for a great place in a great village.
Cate was a gracious host who was available whenever we needed to talk to her. This home was well appointed, well furnished, and well maintained.

It truly gives you the feel of stepping back in time and having a Cotswold experience to remember for a long time.

This is a beautiful property and was exactly as described online. It is right in the village of Bourton-on-the-Water so it is easy to walk to places in the village, but just enough off the High Street that it is not in the middle of all the tourists. My only real concern with the booking was not being able to get the check in instructions via email. I had to call the property owner while I was already on my trip and get a lot of very specific, detailed information over the phone. I felt that info, as well as the code to open the key box should have been sent to me in an email a few days prior to my check in. Other than that, I loved this property and enjoyed my stay there.

Cate! We had an absolutely wonderful time staying at your beautiful home. The charm and warmth of your hospitality made our visit to Bourton on the Water even more delightful. Exploring the picturesque village with its lovely waterways and quaint shops was an unforgettable experience. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable – we can't wait to come back!

Me & some friends had a wonderful stay at Middle Gable. Cat was helpful in ensuring we got checked-in OK and the neighbours were friendly. Even with five of us, the house was spacious and charming, to fit the vibe of the lovely Cotswolds town that you're almost in the middle of. A wonderful stay & a great place that we'd recommend.

This was a wonderful stay. Cate is brilliant and super friendly, you get all the information, everything is easy to use. The house has a great vibe, very peaceful with a great stillness. It was frosty outside all the cobwebs were frozen it looked so beautiful and magical. The house is steeped in history, well loved and cared for I loved my weekend . A perfect stay

A stunning property, perfect location near to everything. The house is full of character in a beautiful setting with a very pretty garden. Very cozy at night with the wood-burner, bed very comfortable (super-king which is what we are used to). Cate was very helpful and we couldn't have asked for a better choice for a weekend break, could have stayed longer. We plan to return!

This is every bit as charming as it appears in the photos. Very spacious and a well equipped kitchen. Could use a fan for hot days. The location is perfect for touring the Cotswolds. A privilege to stay in such a historic property for that price. Only negative for international travelers is the requirement to contact owner by phone for the key access code in advance. It cost us about $50 in two phone calls.

Wonderful 17th century building, very comfortable and right in the heart of Bourton. Perfect stay for us, 7 nights and ventured out from here most days.
Thank you to the Host for letting us stay in middle gable. A real treat.

Check in at 5pm far too late and not warranted. Had to strip our own beds on last day which for the price we paid was ridiculous. No bins in kitchen to encourage recycling which didn’t make sense as had to collect rubbish in own bags anyway to take out to external bins. Banned from charging electric car, which as it turned out was a nightmare as local facilities really limited. Would only stay here again if they changed attitude to electric cars and check in time.. Neighbour’s lovely and very beautiful quirky old house in fabulous location with parking.

Lovely vintage cottage with ample space and room for a family. Very ornate. Lot of care has been taken to keep the cottage very cozy and comfortable. Highly recommended.

This is a special property full of Cotswold charm and history, but also with all the modern conveniences. Just a leisurely five-minute stroll from the center of the village, yet away from all the touristy crowds.
4.8
If you love gardens, historic buildings, perfect location and really nice and friendly neighbours, then this is the place for you. The location is just over a block from all amenities and yet the yard is very quiet and relaxing. We had our own garden space that we could relax in.

The house was extremely nice, 16th century, right near downtown, couldn’t be nicer, but I’ve never had such a difficult time with a host in my life. She would not send me the key code, I had to call her on the phone, which was difficult without a calling plan. I had great directions to the house from the property manager, but she directed me to the house across the street, specifically telling me it was on the left instead of the right and to look for a sign that said Springfield house #2, even though I knew it was middle gable. I got into terrible trouble with that owner because of it. If she hadn’t insisted on giving me all the info by phone, when I couldn’t hear her at all, it could have been so much easier, same with the location of the key box, I couldn’t understand her and needed a neighbors help to get in. The door was extremely swollen and wouldn’t open, 3 of the neighbors helped and even offered to let me stay at their place when we couldn’t get it to work. Then she told me it was my fault that i had trouble with the latch. The worst issue was the heat- of lack of it. She controls the heat from her house, and refused to turn it up over 15 degrees. We all wore coats in the house the whole time, even with several calls to her throughout the week. My nephew left two days early as they were too cold to stay any longer. The sweet neighbor let us come into her house to warm up for a bit. I felt victimized by this owner, I would never rent from this woman again.

StayCotswold is a good organization to work with. The owner of the property, Cate, was kind and helpful. She gave us great advice about the area and informed us well on the quirks and joys of staying in her very old and beautiful home. The place was clean, spacious, quiet and lovely.

Perfect location, and a gorgeous old home. Clean and comfy bed. We were disappointed to not have control of the heating as it was very cold. We did have to buy our own wood to get a fire in the main room for some warmth. The water temperature for a bath also needs turning up as my teeth were chattering! Kitchen appliances and cookware needs updating. Host was easy to contact.

A lovely stay in a charming period property in the heart of Bourton on the Water. A house lovingly and sympathetically furnished and preserved by Cate the owner to reflect its 400 year old history. Vintage doors and warped floors together with beamed ceilings and a huge four poster bed all add to its historic ambiance. There are 21st century additions for the comfort of modern guests in the form of central heating, log burners and underfloor heating. An absolute positive especially in Bourton is the provision of a double garage and additional parking for one car. We stayed there for a midweek break and didnt find the house wanting in any respect.
Its location is a prime one, within 30 metres of the River Windrush and centre of the village with its pubs restaurants and shops.
Booking through Staycotswold was seamless and we were updated throughout by e-mail and text from the time of booking to the stay itself. The owner was very approachable and informative.
We would certainly return and would recommend this property to family and friends.
Thank you Cate.

A lovely cottage in the centre of village surrounded by walks, pubs restaurants and shops. Well equipped and cosy wood burner for the evenings. Added bonus of parking.
4.8
Fantastic property in a great location. The village is a busy place and the restaurants and pubs were really welcoming. The local people were really friendly which made for a relaxing break all round.
Property owner Cate, explained everything, many thanks to her for an enjoyable stay.
We had a lovely weekend and this property is highly recommended

ALL the frying pans need to be replaced ASAP….too many non-cooks have burnt too many things…and not all of the burnt washed off…if they were ‘non-stick’ originally …they haven’t been for a long time and some would say they shouldn’t be used at all in that condition.
It would have been helpful to have a note of WHERE to turn in the oven…. Using it was simple but one needs electricity to cook!
Explaining exactly how to divy up the garbage would have been helpful as that varies from place to place..think we did it right…but wasn’t really sure until seeing what each bin outside was being used for.

Beautiful cottage and spacious for a cottage with the high celling and large rooms.
Beds really comfy and very quiet location to.
Lots of nice features. Good facilities, lots of crockery etc.
We have stayed once before also.
Loved the location

We absolutely loved our stay at Middle Gable. It was very quiet and comfortable and clean. We were only a few steps from a great pub and a great bakery. The public walkway/path to the Upper/Lower Slaughter loop was literally right out our door. The tub in the main bathroom was perfect for a hot soak after long days of exploring. There is a heated floor in the main lounge. The gardens out front are spectacular. It was much larger than the two of us needed, but it was the perfect getaway mid trip between other busier places, and the cost was comparable to a simple bed and breakfast in Bourton on the Water. My only regret is that we didn’t bring more family and friends to stay with us at this beautiful historic home. Maybe next time… Thanks to Cate and StayCotswolds for a memorable visit.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great location and with parking. House splendid period property with great features and stayed cool despite 30o+ heat outside. Enjoyed long evenings sitting in the garden. Neighbours very friendly and helpful.

Middle Gable - Like a stately home!
Absolutely loved our stay here.
The house is supberb with so many original features and attention to detail in the pictures and ornaments that decorate it.
The owner along with the neighbours made us feel so welcome, it really felt very special.
The garden is south facing and a real sun trap.
The village of Bourton on the Water is very pretty with some great attractions, great eateries, and lovely walks.
Would highly recommend.
If we return to Bourton which is very likely, there is no where else that we'd like to stay.

AMAZING
Middle Gable is an amazing house in the beautiful village of Bourton on The Water. In an excellent position just 30 seconds away from the High Street. The house is beautiful, steeped in history, and the attention to detail is second to none, it makes you wonder who used to own it when it was first built, and who would have stayed there, maybe someone in the many portraits hung around the house. it’s is extremely well equipped, very homely and Kate the owner is so lovely. We visited as a family of 5 and have all been to Bourton many times, but Middle Gable has certainly stolen our hearts and we cant wait to come back. Thank you sooooo much Kate for letting us share your beautiful house. x
recommendations - follow the footpath along the Windrush, Duke of Wellington Sunday Carvery is lovely, Old Manse food is nice and reasonably priced, Cedars is a lovely shop, as well as the kitchen shop both full of goodies. get logs from Cotswold logs in Moreton in Marsh they last a lot longer than the supermarket ones and are so much cheaper too. A total must whilst you are there is the Bloody Bourton Tour run by Ed every Friday and Saturday meeting at 7pm at the War Memorial, Middle Gable even gets mentioned, and it’s great to learn about bits of Bourton you wouldn’t have known. Highly recommend Middle Gable.
