Trenton is the town just off of Mount Desert Island which is home to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. We are just a mile from the first park picnic area and shortly after the fabled trails of Acadia including Beehive, Precipice, Cadillac Mtn, Beech Mtn, Little Long Pond and all the popular tours like boating, puffins, lobstering and lighthouses! It's an adventurer's paradise and that is exactly why we bought the Open Hearth Inn ;).
Free parking right outside your door! Popular places to eat are the Sugar Bakery and Lunts Lobster shop within about a 1 min walk just across the road.
Trenton is the gateway to Acadia and the park starts just half a mile down the road!
Located on Route 3 at the head of Mount Desert Island, The Open Hearth Inn is 12 miles to Bar Harbor, 9 miles to Acadia National Park, 15 miles to Bass Harbor Head Light, 12 miles to Southwest Harbor, 8 miles to Ellsworth, 35 miles to the Schoodic Peninsula of Acadia National Park, 36 miles to Bangor, 65 miles to Camden and 163 miles to Portland. The Bar Harbor Hancock County Airport is a half-mile up the road.
The Open Hearth Inn makes a great home base for day trips around Downeast Maine and the coastal beauties such as Mount Desert Island (MDI to the locals).
The basis of the Open Hearth Inn is the main house, built in the 1820's it's best known for its historic charm. One of 20 rooms and everyone has plenty of space to stretch outside, gather in the old hearth room and play some board games, stretch out on one of the guest couches and watch movies on the common use 70" tv, make some new friends, and explore the real reason we call it 'Ohana'.
All Suites (5 in total) are located in the oldest part of the main building where you will find much of the original history of this circa 1820s home. The front door facing the road is the best entrance for the suites. You'll open the large wooden door and step into a piece of history. Suites 1 (to the left) and 2 (to the right) are located downstairs. Traveling up the stairs you will reach Suite 3 (to the left), Suite 4 (to the right), and Suite 5 (directly back). Staying in the Suites is best if you want to enjoy the oldest part of our centuries-old home. :)
Acadia National Park is just a quick 10 mins down the road and the centre of Bar Harbor a mere 20 mins, and Bar Harbor Airport is just 5 mins down the road from the inn as well. Experience the beauty of Mount Desert Island without the hustle and bustle of downtown Bar Harbor while still being fairly close to anything you could possibly need for the best Maine adventure.
Pet Policy:
Here at Open Hearth Inn we welcome your four-legged family member. However, we ask you to help us with the following pet rules while staying with us.
1. Please don't leave your pet in the rooms unattended.
Why? Because they miss you and from our experience of being professional hosts since the 90's, when they are lonely they howl or bark causing others to lose the quiet enjoyment on the property. Lonely pets also use the bed or other furniture to snuggle on while you are away. This is super tough for our housekeepers to remedy because blankets or comforters need to be washed or replaced, also furnishings can take hours to remove hair from so we can present a clean space for the next guest.
Maine is a very pet friendly place and since you brought them on vacation we hope you keep them with you so they can enjoy "Vacation Land" as much as humans do.
2. Please pick up all the poop/excrement they may have.
3. Please have your pup on a leash when enjoying the common areas.
4. Please try to refrain your dog from barking.
We have dog treats, extra poo bags and a water bowl in the common room.
*There will be an additional cleaning fee charged if your pet makes a mess of the room or the bedding. We hope that you and your four-legged family member have a great stay here at Open Hearth Inn.
No other notes. Feel free to ask any questions. :)

If you like staying in historical homes with the charm and vibe to match, this is a lovely option. The king size bed wasn’t the most comfortable for my preference as it was very, very ‘soft’, meaning not much support. I have very sensitive allergies when it comes to old homes and I am so grateful I had no issues whatsoever.

Unfortunately had to leave early due to family emergency on Monday. Cleanliness of the room was good. The walk upstairs to my room with my dog especially unloading and loading stuff from my car was difficult and inconvenient. A bit taken back that the house front door and all doors were left open 24-7. Never stayed in a 'community home' before. Location was good for the price since it was right at the bridge before Acadia National Park. I only stayed literally 24 hours or a little more so tough to really call it a vacation. Bathroom was small, but AC worked the whole time to keep the room comfortable. King size bed was convenient, fridge in room convenient, the seat to try and relax to watch TV was a bit small. Staff was courteous. Bonus was the pet friendly atmosphere.

such a charming place to stay that didn't break the bank. close enough to bar harbor and ellsworth. you can tell the owners really put the comfort of their guests high on their list.

We enjoyed the quaint room. We mainly slept there as we were busy during the day. Short drive to Acadia.

Small gable room, but clean and comfortable. Not for those avoiding narrow steep stairs.

I would definitely go back. Great accommodation if you’re not looking for over the top luxury. Completely functionally with so many great things. Community space. Full kitchen if you choose. Laundry facilities if you choose. Our room had a mini fridge, micro and coffee maker. Two rooms with a lot of (slanted) space. Comfy bed. It’s not the most updated, snooty place you’ve been but it was clean, comfy, charming and great communication with the hosts. The bakery across the street is also wonderful. If you want the Ritz, pass. If you want a nice, convenient, clean place with a ton of character and functionality, you are in good hands.
