DECK AND YARD:
The porch, large deck and yard aren’t just for the humans. Gates on both the deck and patio will help ensure your dog can enjoy those too! Beautiful trees shade the side yard so it is enjoyable to sit outside (or lay out in the hammock) even on hot sunny days. Rope lights surround the back deck and create the perfect ambience after sunset. Our stereo connects to speakers on the deck, so you can enjoy music while outside. The oversized deck has two separate seating options with total seating for 8. At mealtime you can enjoy cooking outdoors on the gas grill.
DOGGIE DETAILS:
KEARNEY’S PLACE welcomes up to 4 dogs. There is NO pet fee. We do not discriminate based on breed or size, but due to the size of our cottage, we are unable to accommodate more than 2 XL-breed dogs (100+ pounds) per booking. All dogs must be housebroken, up-to-date on shots and must be crated when left in the cottage unattended (exceptions to crate requirement may be made by host on a case by case situation). We ask that you clean up after your pet and properly dispose of any waste. We are unable to accommodate animals other than dogs at this time. If you are bringing 4 dogs please note that we will limit the human occupancy to 4 people as we want to ensure that our cottage does not feel too crowed for our guests. If additional cleaning is required after your stay, we may assess an added cleaning fee.
NEARBY RESTAURANTS AND ATTRACTIONS:
Kearney’s Place is centrally located to everything that Ashe County has to offer.
The New River is just a short 5 minute trip down Old Hwy 16. The new river is great for canoeing, fishing and tubing. We do not offer canoes, tubes or kayaks, but they can be rented locally. Our cozy cottage is just 3 minutes to Shatley Springs Restaurant, 5 minutes to The River House Restaurant and 15 minutes to Jefferson and West Jefferson. The town of West Jefferson has many boutiques and restaurants. Join us during the summer when the town hosts several fairs, live music, gallery crawls, a weekly farmers market and other events. If Autumn is more your season, join us when the fall foliage is in full swing and enjoy our local fall festivals, corn mazes, and pumpkin picking while surrounded by breathtaking colorful scenery. The holiday season offers a Christmas wonderland of lights throughout downtown, choose-and-cut Christmas trees at our many neighboring tree farms, as well as community holiday events.
We are about 40 minutes from Boone, but perfect for a day trip to visit the college, downtown or to head over to Blowing Rock. Kearney’s Place is also within a one hour drive to many excellent wineries.
There is so much to do here in the mountains, you'll want to stay longer every time!

We really loved staying here for a week at the end of June. Sadly the temperatures were above average and the single window air unit was not enough to circulate through out the entire house. We didn't want to leave the windows open while we weren't there because of our four dogs. Also the lack of a fenced yard will stop us from returning. We brought a small amount of fencing with us which worked out great but takes up to much space in our SUV. If there was a fence we would return for short weekends in cooler weather. Our dogs absolutely loved it!

This place is awesome! Stayed here for 3 nights with my mom and my elderly dog. We loved it! It is very secluded, which is what I like about a trip to the mountains. Not far away from town and things to do. The driveway can be a little tricky, we didn't try it while it was dark out. But it's not steep, any car can do it. Definitely follow the directions given to find it. After a couple of times doing that, you can take the shorter route. Beautiful property, nice just to sit outside and enjoy nature. There isn't central A/C, because you usually don't need that in the mountains. However it was hot outside when we stayed over the 4th of July. There is a window unit in one of the bedrooms and it cooled the whole house down great! I highly recommend this place. I hope to return very soon!

Kearney's Cottage is better than advertised. Comfortable, easy to live in, and quiet. Everything we needed was there. Our hosts were responsive and accommodating.

We were very comfortable and couldn't be happier about the location. This was a great place for us to stay with our two doodles. Loved the history of the cottage.

Very comfortable home and so quaint! Everything that we needed for us and our pets to have a relaxing visit. Even though it was a short stay, we had a wonderful time. The driveway is the most challenging piece of staying there as it winds and twists up the hill. But there are turn arounds to help.

I feel like I have found a secret treasure and I can not wait to go back!! During my stay at Kearney Place I felt the coziness, and comfort, of a mountain hide away steeped in family history, and happy memories. I caught myself imaging the stories the walls would tell, if only they could talk. My time here was so relaxing that for the first time in months I slept all through the night, on both nights! Thank you so much for sharing this space with me. I will be back!

Nice cabin, remote and very private. My dog and I enjoyed our week-end stay. Everything was clean and well organized. Instructions were easy to follow. The cabin itself is cozy, the kitchen space is limited but shouldn't be an issue unless you plan to cook a lot. The only issue I had was with heat circulation. The only source of heat is in the living room, so I had to keep all doors open at all times to allow for the hot air distribution throughout the house. May be somewhat challenging if you need privacy. Otherwise, great place to spend a few days and explore the area.

Cute, clean cottage in a peaceful location.

The property was very clean and organized. The bed next to the den was horrible. I didn't sleep hardly any for 3 nights. It was like sleeping on a board and seemed to have a hard rolled area in the middle. My friend and I left yesterday morning and cut our stay short. No local TV for up to date news and weather. Otherwise the place was cozy.

There were Deer and fall leaves along with the coziest little cabin in the woods. There is a river nearby, I want to come back for a summer visit. It was fully stocked and has a great deck.

My sister and I stayed at Kearney's place while we hiked in Grayson Highlands State Park and had a fun weekend away. We are both teachers and were looking for peace and quiet and a clean, comfortable home away from home. This property delivered!
It was spotlessly clean, easy to check in to, and so homey. We loved all the family photos and decor and the stories that went with them. We also found that everything we needed was already thought of and present in the house. The beautiful property itself is convenient to the road and the nearby town, but set far enough back that it was quiet.
This was our first visit to Grayson Highlands and we loved both it, and our stay at Kearney's Place, so much that we will definitely be back!

We had a nice relaxing time at Kearney’s Place. The house had everything we needed. We could have used a little drawer space though as all chests were filled with the owners belongings. Other than that, everything was perfect. We cooked on the grill and enjoyed sitting on the spacious deck. It is right on the mountainside but a very large area all around the house was groomed lawn so it was very easy to walk around outside especially with our dogs. The driveway is easy access, curved but not steep. All in all a wonderful place to stay and I highly recommend it!

Unexpected charm
We really enjoyed our stay. What a lovely little town. So much more to do and see than you would think, The house is so cozy comfortable. I felt right at home. The yard is way bigger than I realized and the birds woke me up singing every morning. That’s not a bad thing. Can’t wait to come back

The host was very helpful and provided loads of information to help make our stay memorable. The cabin was quaint with modern conveniences; everything was clean and welcoming. It was obvious the owners are dog people which made it more comfortable for us and our two big dogs to enjoy the cabin and the outdoors. I’d love a chance to make a return visit.

The owner was great to work with. Communication is on point. Hot water heater went out all of the sudden and she had someone there within 30 minutes or less and it was fixed before we got back for the evening. It is an older home but the history is what makes it so cool. The outside is beautiful. Enjoyed the place.
