About this house rental
The Woodlands offers a luxury self-catering country stay in Chalford, the Golden Valley in the Cotswolds, with over 1 acre of private woodlands and gardens. Just two hours drive from central London, with miles upon miles of natural beauty right outside the front door, this 18th-century cottage extended house is perfectly placed for you to enjoy all that Cotswolds has to offer. Ancient history flows through over a thousand years’ history of the valley’s legacy as one of the country’s earliest cloth-making areas that have made it unique. Still, recent restorations undertaken by the owners have brought it right up to the modern-day, making this self-catering home a character-filled family retreat that is utterly wholesome in every way.
Explore the Cotswolds' natural beauty during the day and in the evening, sit out either in the front courtyard with a cool glass of local wine or enjoy some marshmallows by the pit fire on our bird view high decking, as the last of the day’s sunsets beyond the woods.
Inside:
Stone-built fireplace, oak floorboards, and the iconic 9m long openable glass wall overlooking the valley, The Woodlands is as quintessential as bucolic. A home that celebrates the simple but beautiful things in life creates beautiful memories and happiness.
Outside
Rising with the sound of birdsong, pad downstairs and out into the garden and down to the woodlands for a quiet morning wander around, before back to The Woodlands’ kitchen with freshly provided local produces for a healthy breakfast. After filling up on coffee and toast, pack backpacks and head across the hill, through Chalford Village and up onto national woodlands or down to the canal to enjoy endless Cotswolds views over a picnic of the wonderful sandwich from the famous Lavender Bakery; on return, gather around the fire pit for some local bubbles and conversation as the light fades from the sky.
Practicalities
There is ample parking for up to four to six cars in the private car park. The kitchen includes a Rangemaster Gas cooker, electric oven, hob, American style fridge-freezer, dishwasher, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine, and a washing-dryer. Due to the nature of the traditional country house style, there are a number of low doors throughout. There is an unfenced steep slope in the garden and a low fence on the patio; please supervise children at all times.
The Woodlands Welcome includes
Luxury welcome hamper of local produce, including Organic loaf, Organic milk, free-range eggs, etc.
We have two Smart TV, recipe books, internet...
The White Company Luxury toiletries in all bathrooms
We have Netflix free for you to enjoy; however, if you want to watch over other apps, suck as Prime Video, NowTV, you need to log in using your own account.
Amazon music is available to both Alex Echos in the living room and kitchen.

We stayed three nights for a family wedding locally. The house was spacious downstairs which was a plus due to the weather as it was very stormy and cloudy and foggy!
The house had everything we needed lovely terraces which we would have loved to use if only the rain had stopped! The bedrooms needed a mirror in each room to help the female guests in their getting ready. But overall a lovely house!

Just had 4 nights at this lovely house with my 3 siblings and partners. All of us 70 or over. The house was perfect. We loved the big sitting room and dining area looking out onto the terrace and hills beyond. The terrace was great for breakfast and afternoon tea.
We had plenty of space to be together or apart and the furnishings were tasteful and comfortable .

Great position with lovely views. It was perfect for our family gathering with plenty of space.
Really good communication with the owner.
The approach is incredibly steep it was much better arriving from the top of the hill downwards.
Great outside space would be lovely in the summer.

Had an excellent time staying at The Woodlands as a family celebrating a big birthday. The property/garden was great, with lovely views from the front. The location was good for both short and long walks, although extremely hilly. Poppy was really communicative from the time of booking right through to the end of our stay. A beautiful home that did not disappoint. Excellent facilities, quality linen, clean and extremely comfortable. Plenty of space for 6 adults and 3 children under 3 years old. Overall we had a wonderful stay and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others.

Stayed at the Woodlands for a long weekend for my wife's and my 60th birthdays. Absolutely fantastic stay from beginning to end. Loved the place so much we did not want to leave. The host, Poppy, was very easy to communicate with and was very flexible regarding check in & out. Will be back to this little (big) gem.

We loved our stay, the garden area and view from the lounge made it so special. The welcome hamper was a lovely addition and great communication with the owner. There were just a few small things that would have made our stay even better having experienced it with 4 other girls - the upstairs landing really needs a rug. If anyone needed to leave their room, the whole house woke up with the squeaking floor. We all started to move like a ninjas! Also the rooms could really do with mirrors, especially with so many of us getting ready at the same time. Also, plug sockets by the side tables for charging phones and space for a drink on side table are little things that make a difference (the table light takes up a lot of space). These are small things but worth mentioning if it helps future groups have an even more fabulous time.

My family of 4 adults enjoyed our stay here. Poppy was really helpful and good at communicating and kindly provided hypoallergenic bedding for the two of us that have feather allergies.
We enjoyed the outside seating and inside facilities and it had everything we needed for a pleasurable stay.

We stayed for a long weekend to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. The property was perfect for the occasion with enough space for the family to get together or spread out as appropriate. The facilities were excellent, although as the weather was kind we mostly used the terrace and barbecue area.

Lovely stay in beautiful house with a view.
Many places to sit and enjoy the outdoors.
On a very steep hill with very badly maintained lane ,called dark lane , which was the only downside.
Poppy was very informative and helpful.
Very quick to answer any queries.
Thank you for an amazing time with family.

A beautiful home that did not disappoint. Excellent facilities, quality linen, clean and extremely comfortable. Plenty of space for 6 adults and 2 children under 5 years old and a perfect setting for celebrating Easter away from the hustle and bustle of London. Local farm shop a hit as well as our trip to Cirencester.

This house was perfect for our family get together. Plenty of space for everyone - very quiet with beautiful views across the valley.

This property was spotless clean with good quality bedding and towels, starter pack was ideal with bits and pieces in cupboards. Only problem was that I was driving a defender which didn’t give me much room to get through dark lane with barely an inch or two at each side, would be ok in a smaller car, garden not safe for children. My overall review of this property for 3 days with 8 adults, we had a great time and went out every day, I recommend visiting Burton on the water so beautiful.

We stayed here with family in January and the views, home and surroundings were amazing! The home is exceptionally well decked out with a cozy feeling and had all we needed for a stay with while visiting England. The proximity to all the places we wanted to visit was an added perk (Stratford, Cadbury World, Bristol, Bath were all around 1-1 1/2 hours away). We rented a minivan for the trip which did prove a challenge to get to the property but as others suggested, going around the back way helped. All 4 rooms were well appointed and having a bath for our 4 year old was essential and perfect after a long day. Fast internet, games and some fun books were all available. Can’t wait to stay again! Thank you

We had a great time at the woodlands celebrating the end of 2022 with friends and our young families.
It was a great location that was nice and secluded even though the hill up was scary for my car lol.
Would love to come back in the summer as i imagine the views would be amazing.

We loved the property. The access road is steep and described as unsuitable for Vehicles. This is not a problem when the weather is good but after a heavy snow storm we were unable to get out. That being said I valued the sympathetic help offered by our host. Thank you.

Quiet few days catching up friends.
The house was very comfortable and warm. We loved every thing about the house .. the beds were very comfortable with high quality bedding. We enjoyed sitting out in the garden and chatting. There was plenty of space to sit inside and the piano was a welcome addition. The area surrounding the house is very pretty. Two coffee shops within walking distance.

The contact with the management/ owner of the property was excellent and there is an excellent digital handbook provided which is extremely good and provides local information as well as property information.
The house was a perfect size for 2 of us even though it had 4 bedrooms. We thought it would better suit 4 guests as the bedrooms weren’t overly large and there are only 2 bathrooms upstairs ( there is of course a lovely large shower room downstairs) However that’s is just our view as we like to have plenty of space!!
It’s worth noting - The property is located in a road with a very narrow and very steep lane. The area generally is very hilly so local people are used to this. However - although it wasn’t a problem to us - we did think that it might not suit a person with a low slung car or even a person with limited mobility who was planning on walking straight from the house
Overall we had a good break and there are some nice villages to visit in the area- all mentioned in the digital guide book

Fantastic
Wow. What a beautiful place. We had a fantastic long weekend in this beautiful place. The house is wonderfully equipped and has the most amazing views. Really comfortable beds with gorgeous linen.
The weather was not great on our weekend but it made no difference as there was so many lovely areas in the house to sit and watch nature.
Communication with Poppy has been excellent through out.
We would definitely love to return.

INCREDIBLE - we hope to be back!
We absolutely LOVED this property! So beautifully and professionally furnished and decorated!! I would live here... Fantastic location in the Cotswolds, close to many great hikes and pubs. Road to get to is super steep but added to the ambiance :) Plenty of space for us all and had everything needed for our 1 year old too! We hope to be back! Thank you Poppy!

Great house in beautiful location
Spent a very enjoyable long weekend here with friends. We found the house to be very comfortable and well equipped and we were fortunate to have good weather so made full use of the various outside seating areas. The village is incredibly pretty and the local countryside has plenty of walking opportunities and places to find refreshment. Would particularly recommend the Lavender Bakehouse & Coffee Shop for breakfast and the Lamb Inn in Eastcombe for Sunday lunch.

Fabulous views,great location
Firstly, the lane leading to this property from the main road ( near the wedding dress shop) is STEEP and you cannot see uncoming cars.
Not for the novice driver, but we found using the other road in Old Neighbourhood far better.
That aside, the property location was beautiful. Poppy was helpful and the welcome hamper was a lovely touch. The house easily accommodates eight adults, spacious living areas and the marvellous view in the main area was a treat to sit with a morning coffee.
The kitchen is very well equipped, the top grill plate was very useful.
We used the outside area on our return from long walks , such a perfect end to a day.
The beds were very comfortable.
Luxury toiletries / towels were a plus and good showers.
Overall we enjoyed our stay very much, memorable ✨️

Absolutely beautiful location
We hardly spent any time indoors as the gardens and surroundings were absolutely stunning. The Woodlands is an amazing place to relax and spend time with family. Fully equipped with everything we needed and more. Luxury items made our stay all the more comfortable. Plenty of space indoors and out. Poppy the Host kept in good communication before and throughout our stay and made checking in and out effortless. Would 1000% recommend The Woodlands

Wonderful relaxing house
7 Adults and dog , spent four wonderful nights here celebrating my 60th.
Great kitchen fully stocked for cooking in, fantastic dining area for big family meals. Great lounging areas for cosy nights in, with log fire.
Bedrooms were comfy.
Although we didn’t get the opportunity to sit out , in the summer it would be brilliant with all the seating areas.
A great place to stay thanks very much!

Stunning House
Booked the house for my husbands 60th birthday and wasn't disappointed. The house is beautiful with so much attention to detail. The lounge areas have amazing views and the outside lighting at night really is stunning as you walk through the front gates. There is everything you could need in the kitchen, a real home from home. We spent most of the 3 days at the house relaxing as it seemed too comfortable to leave.
We went to the Lavender Bakery for breakfast, the food was lovely but would advise booking the day before as it does get very busy, also booked a birthday meal at The Ragged Cot in nearby Stroud (approx 15 mins away), great staff with exceptional food.
The hill to reach the house is a little steep (as a previously said) but don't let that put you off as its definitely worth it once you arrive and not a problem at all once you've done it once.

Great views and out of the way
Three of us arranged a work retreat, the Woodlands was ideal in location; out of the way, spacious, and scenic. Our arrival was at night we found the property fairly easily, the incline is quite steep driving up to the property, I was glad I had a suitable vehicle. (Good to note here; if arriving after dark there is a black box about knee hight next to the gate, open that up and flip the switch, the lights will illuminate the path right up to the house).
The house is a great location up high with wonderful views, we also ventured to the local supermarket (Tescos), visited the local Co-op for essentials supplies, and the local village shop for fire wood.
I would recommend buying plenty of fire wood, this is not supplied with your stay (one fires worth, to get you started). Also the fire seems to have lost its airtightness so the fire burns very intensely but quickly, the local garage sells logs (one bag will keep for about 4-5 hours), kindelling is sold by the sack in the local village shop not far away.
My only niggle was the master bedroom shower & sink, and kitchen sink drainage was problematic, but an easy fix for the cleaning team.
We spent most of our time in the house looking out at the views, writing, brainstorming, filming (we make videos), and eating. It was a very pleasant and productive stay!
Thank you to Poppy for being so incredibly responsive throughout the booking process! Very impressive.
Best,
Matthew, Angus, and Liz

The most beautiful, magical house
We have just returned from a weekend at The Woodlands for my mum’s 60th birthday. It was recommended to us by my friend who had stayed with her family.
This house is so beautiful and feels like home as soon as you arrive. There are so many beautiful touches, including the white company toiletries, and the most incredible view from the huge windows.
I am always funny about the cleanliness of places that we stay in, but it was spotless.
The kitchen is fully stocked with every utensil you could think of!
We also sat in the morning sunshine on the beautiful patio furniture as the house is a real sun trap - even in November!
We were sad to leave this morning and will definitely return again in the summer. We have made the best memories and have some beautiful photographs. I would 100% recommend this getaway.
Thank you to the fantastic host for your communication and help.
