I have stayed at this motel several times before, and this may be my last time. I was given a room I had stayed in once before, and I really don’t like its location. It’s right next to laundry, and the office, so I don’t feel I have much privacy. It’s also at the entrance of their walkway, so there are lots of people going by that door, and that room is anything but soundproof. It’s a very small room, so I felt cramped in it. The bed was also extremely uncomfortable, it was hard and I woke up with a sore back and hips every morning. I also would like to know what laundry detergent they are using, because I had a terrible allergic reaction to it. Each of the three mornings I stay there, I woke up with swollen, puffy eyes and red, raw skin underneath my eyes. It took a couple of weeks for my eyes to heal again after this stay. I like that it’s family-owned, and they are very conscientious about keeping clean rooms. But between the allergic reaction and the hard mattress, I don’t think I can risk another stay here. A few years ago, I woke up with my jaw out of place. I had to find a chiropractor that morning who was willing to fit me in and work on my jaw for 45 minutes to get it back into place. I think that was from the hard mattress and uncomfortable pillows. I really don’t like giving a negative review to this property as generally I like it and want them to have a good business, but they need to do some updates for the comfort of their guests.

This is a motel on the main drag of Custer. Easy walking to bars and many restaurants. It’s an older hotel and not much to look at on the outside. However the rooms are large and nicely appointed. Comfortable beds, nice towels, indoor pool and hot tub, coffee maker, nice size TV, in room are just some of the amenities. If you can get a good deal on it, it’s a great place. Took one star off as it’s a little pricey. Custer is a great base camp for the southern blackhills.

This is an older property that is well maintained. We did have an AC problem, but the temperature during our stay made that a non-issue. We were offered the choice to change rooms, but declined. Enjoyed the large indoor pool. Room was small, but had everything we needed.

I really liked staying at Chief Motel. It was a cozy place with very comfortable beds. Older but clean and neat. The only thing was that their outdoor pool was not the cleanest but we still swam in it. Just could have been better. Otherwise it was a great place to stay.

There was no service. Keys were taped to outside office door. Sink in room drained slow. Carpet in room smelled musty.

Have stayed here several times. Never had a complaint about anything. Prefer mom & pop motels over big chain motels. And this place is perfect. Not the fanciest motel, or the most modern. But that's what makes it so special, and why we stay here, and will again, if we ever return to Custer.

Great check in with manager, very informative gave us some great tips about where to go in Custer and surrounding areas. We booked 2 room unit which was good for privacy however noisy air con and no window in 2nd room which was stuffy. great indoor pool close to everything Custer has to offer. Recommend for short stay!!

This property and hotel are OLD ! ! !
OLD AS DIRT... OLD AS THE HILLS !! !
These rooms are not worth the amount charged for them.
Look around for better properties at the same price !

Each room had a designated parking spot, there were plenty of towels. Air co ditioner could have been slightly colder, but it did work.

Next time we’ll ask to be on the east side of the hotel where there’s a better view of the surroundings.

Man at front desk was helpful and friendly. My granddaughter enjoyed the swimming pool. It was deeper than some. I enjoyed the hot tub, although the jets were not functional.

Nice motel, we really enjoyed the covered pool and the terrace and the good restaurants in town.

I am very disappointed in this motel. On the day we arrived for check-in, there were several folks already waiting. One of them shared that the man who runs the property was nowhere to be found. One of them decided to call the police and have them do a welfare check. At this point we left for a quick bite and returned about an hour later. Still no update on the whereabouts of the man who runs the motel so we still couldn’t check in. By that time we needed to head out for an evening tour in Custer State Park. Rather than take our chances and drive 20 minutes back to the Chief Motel after our tour to find out if someone was there now to check us in, we decided to just find another place close by.
We never did find out what happened to the guy from the Chief Motel. I do hope he is ok, but there is no excuse for there being no staff to check us in at the property.

This place was definitely awesome for the price we paid! Friendly staff as well, they were great! Huge pool and a hot tub in a separate building was very welcoming as well!

This was great little motel! Older, but clearly well maintained and well loved. Great pool for a quick dip on a hot day on our cross country journey. Close by ice cream and a good breakfast joint the next morning. Would for sure stay again.

This was delightful little motel in the heart of Custer. We sat out in the courtyard each day under the giant tree and talked and watched the passersby. Our room was quaint but clean and comfortable. The staff from maintenance, to housekeeping to front desk were all very friendly, helpful and kind.

Check in was very easy. Old school with hand written registration and an actual door key. Nostalgia!
Room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. Abundant towels (big, fluffy and clean). Rug was so clean, my husband walked around bare foot (He does NOT normally do this).
Had neighbors next door each night-and still very quiet.
The Hotel Owner and additional office helper were very friendly and wanted to make sure that we had all we needed.
If ever visiting Custer again, will go back.
The hotel is centrally located to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, etc.
Chief Hotel is a wonderful place to stay.

We always stay at the Chief Motel when we come to Custer (every 5 years or so) as it is nostalgic for our family.
There was a snafoo with our booking (4 rooms total for 4 days) but the front desk agent made it right and upgraded one of our rooms.
It’s not a 5 star hotel but it is clean, comfy and a good price. Centrally located and easy walk to town.

This was the cheapest room available for the night, so I low expectations. I was wrong. The room was very clean. Kudos to the staff and management.

My family has stayed at the Chief 4 times. Management is very friendly. Housekeeping above and beyond. Nice family-owned business. If having breakfast provided, skip this place. Plenty of places within walking distance.

This motel was great! Super clean! Pool was great! The check in was super easy and the gentleman who checked me in gave me a map that we used to see the area.

Perfect location for everything i wanted to do in that area plus it was easy walking distance to a few stores and restaurants right on the main downtown street of Custer.

When checking in we were given a run down of what to see in the area and how to get there. Very friendly and helpful at the front desk. Rooms were very clean despite being an older facility. Would stay here again.
