The receptionist was outstanding

I had several complications having visitors. I never stayed in a hotel where i would have to pay additionally per visitor, I felt it intrusive to my privacy. The AC didn't work in my room and there was not toilet brush, which was also very uncomfoprtable. The beds are okay, the shower is nice. At the reception desk stands a very present tall statue of a person of colour-servant/hotel-boy. For an 'international' hotel in 2024 to promote such racist imagery is really unpleasant.

The property is very old and the room was small. The room had a very large wardrobe which wasted the small amount of space available. Poor room design.

Remember that you get what you pay for. For $45 per night, this was actually an excellent value and it included a breakfast buffet. The hotel was very clean and the staff was attentive. That said, the overpowering stench of a strong "floral" room "deodorizer" (like Glade or something like that) in my room nearly suffocated me upon arrival and very nearly caused me to change hotels. When I called the front desk, the response was to send someone up with another can of a different scent! Luckily between the open window, the air conditioning and the 11 hours in which I was out of the room, it had subsided enough to remain in the room and sleep. The room was very small and needed some refurbishing but again, for the price, it was fine. Overall, for one night, to sleep and shower in, this was fine and a good value. My rating would be higher except for the room spray - I am someone who is not bothered by scents and always wear perfume. For me to complain about this, (something that I have never noticed or complained about anywhere else before) means that it was very strong and a significant issue.

This was a last-minute reservation because of an unplanned change in flight times non-stop to the US, which was most likely due to a major rainstorm. Boutique hotel. Room was not as sleek and photogenic and modern as the lobby, but not necessary for a comfortable night. Nice fresh hot and cold breakfast with exceptional and attentive staff with a great selection of fresh fruits and beverages, including tea options. Good restaurant options just outside the door as well as shopping.

Friendly and helpful staff, nice room but wi-fi didn't work well on the 4th floor where I stayed.
Very good breakfast and great location, near old town, restaurants and shops.

Hotel had a nice breakfast and staffs were helpful.

The location couldn't be any better if you main intention to be in Montevideo is to explore its Old City's highlights. Take note that the rooms and building are rather old, so, do not expect a 5-star modern hotel. For us, the location, service and cleanliness are the main priorities. In all these, Alvear Hotel do not disappoint. Shoutout to the friendly, polite and helpful staff, especially Roberto & Oscar at Front Desk!!

Great location. Overall clean but very dusty under the beds.

Basic hotel with low maintaince. Old building in the city center.

Nice hotel for the price, good breakfast buffet, clean and friendly people at the front desk.

We stayed for 4 nights are were happy with our choice. Very good location to the central and old town area without being noisy, with 24 hour reception. The rooms fitted the price we paid - basic design but had everything we wanted - ensuite with shower, tv to watch the football, wifi, mini fridge, storage etc. Breakfast was the best of the entire two week trip with lots of choice and fresh fruit. I would recommend if you want somewhere nice to stay without having to spend a lot and you are not bothered about staying in one of the super high end expensive hotels.

Quite comfy room, friendly and helpful staff, good breakfast and location. I’d stay here again.

Great location & value for money

Good hotel in walking distance from the centre. Overall good experience, with couple small blemishes: condition of the property mixed - parts of the bedroom looked completely new, parts quite tired; anything iron in the bathroom had marks of corrosion; breakfast uninspiring.

This hotel is excellent. Staff are super friendly. And location is great!

Small and basic room, but adequate for somebody that doesnt spend too much time in it. Breakfast buffet good, with various fruits. Neighborhood quite good, close to historic town. Restaurants close

We stayed at this hotel 2 times on our trip to South America. It was an acceptable hotel, but the only part that lived up to the pictures was the breakfast which was wonderful and full of variety. The desk staff was very friendly and helpful as well. The rooms themselves were disappointing. The first one had an almost unmaneuverable bathroom (the second bathroom was far improved). We had to ask for towels and pillowcases for the additional pillows in the first room, there were no extra pillows in the second, but it did come with towels. Both rooms were quite tightly furnished, but did include a refrigerator which was nice. Views were nonexistent in either room, and the paint and finishes could really use updating in addition to needing better mattresses in general - they weren't the worst, but had a lot of room for improvement! Overall a fine hotel, good service, good food, acceptable room.

We were only here for one night but it was the best hotel of our entire trip. The room was much bigger than any other room we had and the air conditioning worked very efficiently. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

Desk staff made it easy. Very professional, helpful and polite. Breakfast was a pleasure.

Excellent location in Montivedeo. Good 2-day stay.

Old needs a bit of a work done, but it was close to where we needed to be. The staff were helpful and the room was clean and beds were comfortable.

Arrived by taxi from the airport and checked in easily! We asked for a map and the receptionist tried his best to tell us in English the best places to see and visit! He highlighted areas for food, shopping and sight seeing which were really helpful! They looked after our key each day and were always friendly whenever we said hello or goodbye!

Had to ask for shampoo, towels and room not that clean. Cold coffee for breakfast and no food at 9:45 (more was brought out but slow in keeping up to demand).
3.8
Great hotel for the price. (paid $50 which included breakfast). Breakfast was great. The room was small but clean and the hotel was quiet. Great location downtown. I had the hotel set up the airport pickup which was probably a mistake but the hotel was very good considering the price range (and the cost in Uruguay). I would definitely recommend it to a friend and would stay there again.

good breakfast, friendly staff, quiet

Old fashioned, noisy, shower terrible hardly any water out of it, internal works started at 0800, room very small. The staff tried really hard to make things work, most at reception spoke English.
Basically the whole third floor at least, could with a good makeover
