Nice hotel on a beautiful lake with views of Mt. Fuji from the roof.

The hotel is quite worn down and has more of a hotel-vibe than other ryokans we have stayed at. The onsens however are great and have amazing views. The food and service was really great.
The rooms were really spacious but - and this is the reason for my negative review - had a really bad smell. Both the tatami mats and the futons smelled foul. We spoke to the manager, who said he just recently changed the tatami mats, so this issue might not persist. The futons smelled old and moist, like when you put your goose feather-pillow in the washer and the feathers get wet. They changed the futons for os, which helped some. We have stayed in many ryokans in Japan and have never had any of these issues before. We are surprised that few other reviewers has commented on this, as we are usually not picky or sensitive.

Wonderful relaxing hotel with indoor and outdoor onsen. Service is absolutely amazing from all personnel.
Set dinner was in the room and was served by incredibly wonderful staff member.
They are very strict about serving a specific meal and do not accommodate any food allergies and preference. However , they did inform us what the food contains and we had an incredibly delicious and filling dinner!
Breakfast was served in a dining room. It was a traditional Japanese breakfast (no coffee…)
Highly recommend the place for the incredible service from everyone , the delicious food , nice rooms , nice onsen and views of my Fuji !

Great Ryokan. The Service and the Japanese dinner & breakfast served were excellent

Wonderful if you are looking to experience traditional Japanese lodging and dining. The staff was amazing. The location beautiful. For my son and I, who are American, it was a very interesting experience. We only stayed one night, however, because the traditional Japanese accommodation was not comfortable for us (of course everything is done of the floor). But

The best Hotel I stayed in Japan so far!!!

It was an amazing stay. The staff was very kind and took care of everything. Highly recommended.

Amazing views and amazing service. Make sure to get there on time for dinner!

Very wonderful, authentic ryokan. If you are visiting the Lake Kawaguchiko area, I would highly encourage giving Wakakusa-no-Yado a try. The breakfast and dinner meals were amazing, the customer service (from walking in to checking out) was world class. Private and public onsens. Beautiful rooms with an even more breathtaking view… as well as a spectacular rooftop view of Mt. Fuji. Wish my Japanese was a little better so I could have told them, wholeheartedly, how blessed we were by our stay there.

The hot springs and the food were the standouts of this stay. While the ryokan has several Covid related restrictions (reduced hot spring capacity, using sanitizer before entering dining room at breakfast, having dinner in your room, no karaoke) all in all it didn’t impact the experience.
The meals were amazing. The ryokan will send an email saying they don’t make substitutions which for the type of food I’m not surprised. A lot of time and care was spent making each meal. Do yourself a favor and ask for the Japanese version of the menu. The English version isn’t a complete translation. Then use either iPhone or google camera translation. One amazing things I realized is at breakfast this morning which was a more westernized menu was the fact the chef and team are not making the same meal for everyone. It is apparently dependent on how many nights you have stayed.
I would go again.

Excellent experience, very beautiful!!! Thanks a lot!

Excellent place with amazing hospitality. Onsen experience was so memorable. Lake view was superb. mt.fuji view was slightly obstructed by the construction work going on in the hotel

We really enjoyed the bath houses.

The property is located in a beautiful location and it is within walking distance of the gardens, gorgeous cafes, and the lake and nature paths. The hot springs are wonderfully relaxing and having lovely views. The food was delicious and the service was superb. We would definitely come back as a family (as we did) or as a couple. Hope to be back soon!

The hotel was an oasis of calm and comfort. The staff was so conscientious.

very pleasant experience, stuff were so nice, even though they have prints saying they can’t speak English, they try their very best to help you and I found no barriers in communicating.

Booked a 3night stay and each day just wow us more. The ryokan was having some renovations during our stay and there wasn't any lake view. However, the roof top view of mount Fuji made up for it. Every meal is different and the presentation is very pretty. There is always a welcome snack whenever we came back to the ryokan. It's a pity that i did not buy the snacks which were available at the store in the Ryokan thinking that I can purchase them at the train station souvenir stores. Friendly staff and the service was impeccable. We love the public baths as well which comes with steam and sauna rooms.

Stayed here to get great views and easy access to the Mt. Fuji area, while also getting a traditional Japanese Ryokan experience and it did not disappoint! The property and rooms were very clean and well kept. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They have a very convenient shuttle that goes to the main local train station (Kawaguchiko station) which was super useful (you just have to note the times, because it doesn't run the whole day). Even without the shuttle, it's easy to walk to nearest train station. Breakfast and dinner are included if you choose and they both were traditional Japanese meals, and everything was absolutely delicious! They also have a public and private bath house- we paid a little extra to use the private bath and it was great, its all natural water from Mt. Fuji and during the day you get a great view of Mt. Fuji from the onsen.
The view from the rooftop gives an unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji and the property sits on Lake Kawaguchiko, so it's a few minute walk to get to the lake (we were there in the late afternoon and it was very peaceful with not many people).
All in all we had an amazing experience at this Ryokan, would highly recommend if you're looking for peace, quiet and a traditional Japanese experience.

Excellent place to stay

Slight hiccup initially of getting a room with car park view instead of a lake view room which I had booked and paid for in advance. But they changed the room on the second day of my stay (I stayed there for 3 nights in total). Food is good and the onsen was nice too . I also tried the private onsen which had a view of Mount Fuji on a clear day. The observatory on the roof top has a great view of the lake and Mount Fuji, which was nice

We stayed there to see the cherry blossom. We love the walking trail by the hotel. It very nice and quiet in the morning. Great view of Mt. Fuji and cherry blossom. The only disappointment was the charges to use the private onsen with the view of mt. Fuji. It said first come first serve. When we booked, use fee was not mention. We were present with the bill when we check out. The private onsen has the same mt. Fuji view as the public one. No need to book.

The service was absolutely amazing. The staff were all really nice. On our day of arrival, we were going to be late due to delays, but they had specially prepared dinner for us to eat even though we were going to arrive after Dinner hours were over. That alone made us understand just how wonderful our stay was going to be.

I am so glad to have splurged on this place. It was well worth the experience and I would return again. The meals were out of this world!

Warm service with clear English instructions ( written) Fantastic view of Mount Fuji on Rooftop and open air bath. Location just next to the lake. Traditional Japanese style bedding and surprisingly supportive pillow and sleeping matt. Many of us have good sleeping quality during our stay!

This was an amazing stay. Dinner, staff and overall service was 5-star rated. Stayed with our 2 school aged kids and had a great relaxing time.

Hospitality was passed my expectations. Phenomenal experience.

We had a very pleasant experience at Maruei even before we checked in. As we were late driving a rented car from Haneda airport, and couldn’t reach the hotel in time for the last dinner service at 7pm, Maruei staff is very kind to arrange a special dinner upon our arrival, that really soothed our heart and stomach after a long drive and hectic traffic. Throughout our stay, we were well taken care of, every staff is trying their best to make us feel at home. The dinner is super delicious and breakfast is hearty. The room on 3rd floor and both indoor/outdoor onsen are great and cozy. We love catching the magnificent Mount Fuji at the hotel roof top, on a clear sky day. We recommend Maruei to anyone who like to experience Japanese hospitality and high quality of service.

For anyone sensitive to mold or traveling with young children or conscious of their health, I would caution you against using this hotel. There was a horrific amount of black mold growing in the shower area in our room, all over the back of the shower door, the wood surround of the shower, the window surround, the ceiling, and the bathtub. It was all water damaged wood, meaning the most toxic types of mold. We could not use the shower as a result and were glad we were just there one night. Staying in the room overnight, my traveling companion and I both experience significant allergy symptoms indicating that the mold spores have spread throughout the room (there was also some water damage on the ceilings). For a place charging $500 per night this was very disappointing and gross. They were apologetic, but we noted mold and cleanliness issues throughout the property as well indicating more widespread issues and completely unlike everywhere else we stayed in Japan. Otherwise location was great and hospitality was okay—they didn’t fully explain some things like where dinner was located at check in but that worked out fine.

I am very impressed by the service of their staff, they're all so friendly and accommodating. I love how they always smile and greet us, every single one is so kind. Our Kaiseki Dinner was great, everything prepared for us was so delicious! Breakfast was so filling and yummy too! And the private onsen bath was a lovely experience! My husband and I are very much satisfied with our stay here. Thank you Wakakusa and Staff! ❤️

Amazing meals and the oneson was a treat. The view of Mt Fuji was superb- both from the oneson and the observation deck. They really introduced us to Japanese traditions that we will cherish. I can’t say enough about the elaborate dinners and the 2nd night was even better than the first.

The staff was very friendly and helpful during the check in process as well as answering all my questions before arriving at the property. The entire experience was great, the food was delicious, and having the option to use the private onsen was a plus for my wife and I. I look forward to staying here again in the future!
