This is the most wonderful experience! Cockatoo Islsnd is so wonderful to explore, but combining it with overnight camping in an on-site tent is the best. We arrived earlier in the day and were able to leave our bags so that we could walk around. There is so much to see and do. We had a lovely lunch at one of the cafes, pizzas are delicious! We then checked into our tent. It was supplied with fresh linen and towels etc. We bought some wine from the cafe and self catered with our own cheese platter (camp kitchen has fridges etc) overlooking the beautiful harbour as the sun set, it was magical. If you ever have the opportunity to do an overnight stay, just do it. We loved it!

Cockatoo island is a great place to explore the history from convict settlement to early 2000s when it closed. I had a very nice time there.

Cockatoo is an incredible social and industrial heritage site with an unbeatable vista from inside Sydney Harbour. It is great that these permanent tents are available to hire. However, the very minimal staffing is problematic, and the fact that the two cafes shut to the public so early (right on 6 and categorical, churlish refusal to even sell ready made ice creams when the shutters were still up, just seems illogical and pointlessly inconvenient for the campers. Also there was a huge mob of 10-12 ish aged boys running riot in the campsite, shouting at the tops of their voices from our arrival at just before 6 and probably before to past 11, also throwing stones at nesting seagulls and masked lapwings, and running them down with their bikes, throwing stones at a big metal bin to make a horrible noise, playing with electric noise making ray gun things at 11 at night - and although the ranger was alerted to the murder of native wildlife, he did nothing about it, the boys were doing the same literally as he was walking off. My animal loving 9 yr old was very distressed by finding crushed baby birds. There were not even any signs about respecting other campers or being quiet after a certain time. SO that really spoiled the stay. However, it is a special place, the amentities are good and clean (although there should be more toilets for the amount of tents), and the ferry transport is easy and fun. (although it's annoying that the F3 ferry doesn't stop there after a bit past 4pm.

We had an amazing stay as the property was above expectations and we woke up to a beautiful sunrise on the harbour - better than in a high rise hotel where you can’t open the windows or are blocked by other buildings!! Be organised though and bring food to cook for dinner and breakfast but there’s a full kitchen and BBQ to use.

1. Catch the ferry over from Woolwich as there is plenty of free parking.
2. Scooters for kids are essential.
3. Marshmallows and marshmallow sticks essential.
4. Tents are very hot in summer- I would suggest spring or autumn to book.
5. Bring an extra pillow or two if you have booked a tent with a stretcher as the dip in the middle and can be very uncomfortable.

We loved our glamping stay at Cockatoo Island. It was a great introduction to camping for our kids without spending the money on the gear. The double tent was perfect for our family and the beds and linen were comfy and great quality. We took our own food and the cooking area was clean and easy to use. Big fridges to store things in which we will do for next time. Ear plugs are helpful if you’re a light sleeper as the other campers can make sounds in the night and passing boats can make a little noise too.The cafes have limited hours 8:30-4pm so come prepared with your cheese platter. We ate lunch at the Marina Bar one day and it was delicious, yummy fish and chips and good music.

Lovely apartment (23B) on Cockatoo Island for our 1 night family stay. Balcony with beautiful views of the harbour. The island is small and it was easy to walk around and explore from the apartment. Lovely alternative to the clamping for those who are not keen on tents as it is still an adventure with children. Apartment had all modern comforts. Welcome friendly arrival and a golf cart to drive us and our luggage to the apartment. The island has 24 hour security and the apartment is located amongst a few other apartments. It was quiet but we also felt safe. We enjoyed our stay.

I booked this place for mother-in-laws birthday, and they really enjoyed it. The found the island to be a unique experience and would highly recommend it. They reported that the staff were very friendly and helpful and the fully equipped tent was as comfortable as one could expect.

The island is a very interesting place to visit and explore. The campsite was fun for the kids, however, for an overnight stay, it seemed too quick.Bring thongs for the campsite as the grass has bindis and bring your own wine!

Showers, toilet, kitchen facilities nearby. Tent appear in good condition, can block out sun and wind. However, ants, cockroach were crawling around the tent, that's nature.

This was my first experience of camping and I think I’ve been spoilt. Extremely clean showers and toilet facilities. Friendly staff. Basic but clean tent meaning we slept well. The only down side was the esky that smelt like something had died inside it so we didn’t get to use it. The view is what I will remember though sitting on the waters edge watching the boats come and go was pretty special. We took our own food so didn’t use the onsite kitchen although it seemed popular or the cafe that operated very limited hours. Cockatoo Island was fun to explore in the sun and the views of the bridge were exceptional.
