Weird stafff who seem confused by basic requests. Aggressive manager who appeared at my door shortly after check-in to discuss ‘things’ and proceeded to engage me in a strange and circular conversation which included questioning my English language skills (?). WiFi, needed for an urgent and specific request, not working, with no attempts to address or fix this. Rooms have no glass windows so it’s very dark unless you open the door to everyone - makes the AC redundant as a result. Not good value for money, annoyed once again by Hotels.com’s dreadful Sri Lankan property selection.

It’s odd that the main concern here is asking travellers to pay for their stay the moment they arrive/walk back in to the property/constantly. Payment on check-put is the norm and it’s strange to continually stay in places like this in Sri Lanka where they’re just obsessed with money. We’re all going to pay you for our stays - that’s normal. Please just let us be here and enjoy and pay on departure - which is standard.

We had a nice stay at the Small House. The owner and staff were very helpful. The owner lent us his phone so we could book a taxi service we found online, which we think was really great. The breakfast was very tasty, with a mix of western and local foods. The room shows some age though, and is in need of minor repairs. The hotel was also hard to find, with no name on the door! The room is also not completely sealed from the outside, and had no mosquito net, so there is a risk of bugs getting in during the night! We also needed to ask them specifically to provide WiFi and toiletries. After we asked, they provided without issues. All in all a great stay, but with room for improvement.

I was actually bumped on arrival and I never like when that happens, but the place that I booked had been bought out by a group. So at that point, even when you express your displeasure there’s not much you can do. They insisted that the room in the hotel they moved me to was an upgrade but aside from the balcony with a view of the ocean, I disagree. Anyway, breakfast was good and everyone was as friendly as all Sri Lankan’s are. Too bad I didn’t get to stay in the place I booked for the reasons I booked it.

Great small hotel that I strongly recommend. Very friendly staff , warm welcome !
Very good breakfast and the room was nicely decorated. This is a very good value for money. We really liked staying at this Small House Boutique Guest House.
It is very well located. The streets nearby are so cute and there are many restaurants around.

Beautiful guest house in the heart of the vibrant historical walled old town of Galle. Friendly staff and excellent, bountiful, delicious breakfasts. Hard to find as the guest house has no sign or street number. Very hot and the air conditioner struggled to keep the room cool so hard to sleep at night.

We enjoyed our stay in this small and comfortable hotel, were we felt very welcome by the staff. The hotel is right in the fort, in a small and quiet street, surrounded by restaurants and shops. Each room had an outdoor patio with table and chairs where we enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the morning.

We pulled into Galle station after a beautiful coastal train ride from Colombo, and quickly found a Tuk Tuk driver who drove us into the Galle Fort area and down the narrow streets to Small House. Our host greeted us with a warm smile and took us up the stairs in the quaint colonial house to our room. It was spacious and clean, with big shuttered windows to let in light from the courtyard area. The host was happy to give us tips on what to do in the city, suggesting we start by exploring the fort and rampart, which did not disappoint. Just a one minute walk from our room and we were stood on the edge of the Dutch fortress rampart looking out over the sea. We strolled around the perimeter taking in the sights such as the lighthouse, mosque, clock tower and cathedral, finally watching the sun set, before heading to the Dutch Hospital later that evening for food. On our first morning we woke to a pleasant but basic breakfast of eggs, toast, fruit and coffee, before going to Unawatuna beach for the day, something I would highly recommend doing. The bed was comfortable and our room was very clean and well air conditioned. In terms of location you are right where you need to be. Overall it proved reasonable value and I would certainly suggest staying here to my friends.
