Overall great stay at Genji that met expectations. I'd recommend it, though think there are likely equal or better alternatives in Kyoto. We stayed here for 1 night as part of a 2 week honeymoon trip.
Room: overall very good. Great shower and bath. Spacious. Nice mix of modern and traditional design. We had a garden room and I wish we had gotten a river view room as the garden view felt a bit meh/dark.
Service: helpful and friendly staff. We had one misstep toward the end of our stay re: laundry services that impacted our experience a bit but not a dealbreaker.
Area: nice area of Kyoto. Walkable and near the trains.
They had just replaced the flooring in our room so there was a strong straw smell. Worth knowing if that kinda thing will bother you.

Just...wow! Out of more than a dozen places our group stayed, Genji is our favorite place to stay. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, the property is recently opened and in immaculate condition, the rooms are spacious and comfortable.
The location is nicely situated in a quiet nook along the river with many popular sites within walking distance. Higashiyama Ward, for example, is a short walk across the river, and Kiyomizudera Nioman Gate is visible from the rooftop garden – definitely check it out at night when it's lit up.
We'd stay here forever if it was an option.

Well located, beautifully conceived, designed and constructed. All staff were eager, friendly, thoughtful and competent. Loved the properly constructed timber furniture and the modern traditional design was inspiring.

One of my favorite hotel stays ever, anywhere. The staff are incredible, the service is second to none, and the rooms are lovely - modern, with a Japanese minimalist sensibility.

Staff were exceptional, room had great views of the river. Conveniently located within walking distance to attractions, or close to public transport for areas further away.

Genji Kyoto is fantastic. Beautiful modern interpretation of traditional machiya down to the detail. Comfortable beds and pillows, large shower, and every amenity is connected to the design. Service is exceptional. Great roof top lounge and gardens throughout!

Length of stay: one night (March 2023)
Had a really amazing stay at Genji - everything was perfect! Here's what I loved about Genji:
Conveniently located - 5 to 7 minutes walk from Shichijo metro station, at a very peaceful and quiet neighborhood; yet also not far (by foot) from the very bustling Pontocho Allery and Kawaramachi area.
Design/ rooms - very thoughtful and stylish designs, with such beautiful integration of nature in the hotel architecture. I stayed in a room with a view of the Kamo River, which was spectacular and such a joy to wake up to.
Service - absolutely stellar. The hotel staff were very proficient in English, warm and helpful all the way.
I could not recommend this fantastic hotel more!

Throughout my time in Japan, Genji was my favorite hotel I stayed it. It was an excellent mix of modern and traditional style and the views were some of the best I had in Japan. I booked the River Balcony premium double and could not be happier with it. The river view from the room and from the rooftop was breathtaking. We had an amazing breakfast on the rooftop and the service was impeccable. The front desk staff is lovely and are super helpful if you need a recommendation, a taxi, whatever-- they were all great. The hotel is relatively close to Gion and Nishiki market and the walk there follows the river which is an added bonus.
If I am ever in Kyoto again, I will absolutely stay at Genji

No question, the best. An architectural dream hotel. Perfect location is a super quiet but cool neighborhood overlooking the river. Short walk along smaller river to all kinds of restaurants and shops.
Great service, great food, cool little bar. So so great.

Genji is a small, impeccable hotel that will always be my first choice when I’m visiting Kyoto. Superb design, superb food, superb amenities, and some of the finest service I’ve ever received. We stayed five nights and loved our room, which included beautiful custom furniture, heated bathroom floors, a soaking tub with panoramic views of the city and the many local hawks and blue herons that swooped past our windows each day. We didn’t intend to get breakfast at the hotel every morning, but after our first, we couldn’t resist— they have excellent options for both Western and Japanese palates— and even though it was winter, we sometimes took it on their beautiful rooftop garden, supplied with personal heaters and blankets. Their special New Year’s Osechi breakfast was a sight to behold, too. We used Genji as a base camp to visit dozens of shrines, temples, and gardens, as well as nearby sites in Nara, Uji, and Himeji— while the Genji is a bit of a hike from Kyoto Station, we managed very well by accessing two nearby subway stations. Returning to the hotel meant a short walk from the station and over the Kamo River (which meant more wonderful bird sightings!) On the way out for the day, we were always greeted warmly by the desk staff, who gave us special hand warming pads so we’d be more comfortable walking in the January cold. I’ve stayed at far “fancier” hotels around the world— none can beat that level of hospitality. LGBT friendly, too! Thank you, Genji! We’ll be back.
