About this house rental

Berkeley's historic Elmwood House is a 1905 Edwardian duplex and prominent landmark in Berkeley's sought-after Elmwood district. This is one of Berkeley's grand old dames replete with original built-ins, woodwork, and wonderful architectural detail such as coved ceilings, pocket doors that allow for sequestered living spaces or a large open area. If Elmwood House is not available please ask about our other Elmwood property.

Located in the south side of Berkeley, about nine blocks from the Cal campus, the Elmwood has not changed much since the early 1900’s. You will find tree-lined streets teeming with beautiful gardens, a flat, walkable terrain and an easy 5 minute walk to College Avenue from the property. Known for its brown-shingle homes, California bungalows, great cafes,
restaurants—and it’s vibrant history —the Elmwood is one of Berkeley's most prized neighborhoods!

This lovely quintessential Berkeley home is located on a quiet cul-de-sac in a family-friendly neighborhood. There are two children's parks within a half block of the house, and College Avenue is just a couple blocks away. The area is flat and easy to walk; it boasts a 97 WalkScore for its accessibility to everything from public transit, shopping, libraries, cultural events (CAL Performances and more), to several parks, a hospital, wonderful hiking trails, golfing ranges, swimming and tennis!

The Berkeley Fire Trail is just five minutes away where one is rewarded with panoramic bay views after an uphill hike. Tilden, Chabot, Redwood, Temescal and Sibley Regional Parks are just minutes away and provide everything from wedding venues to beaches, lakes, hiking, golfing, a kid's animal farm, horse-riding, water sports and more. The CAL Recreation Center is just five minutes away and provides three lap pools in a verdant and lush setting.

The property is bright, sunny and spacious and ideally located within walking distance of College and Telegraph Avenues where you will find fine dining, ethnic restaurants, bookstores, theatre, Berkeley's university campus, and more. Walk to historical Telegraph Avenue, or stroll along College Avenue, from the Rockridge District at one end and the California College of Art to the University of California of Berkeley (CAL) at the other end.

This is Berkeley at its best where sidewalks are abuzz with life and things to do. The entire stretch of College Avenue is lined with restaurants and places to shop. The local movie theatre is a 5- minute walk from house and right in the hub of Elmwood. San Francisco is only 8 miles away and easily accessible by BART. (10 blocks from house) Monterey and Carmel are approximately a 2 hour drive and the wine country, Napa Valley and Sonoma are only about an hour's drive. At your doorstep are some of the most beautiful parks and hiking trails in the east bay park district.

Elmwood House has three bedrooms, one of which can be used as office or library, a spacious open living area that spans the whole floor length from living room to foyer, to dining room and kitchen. Beyond the kitchen is a fully equipped laundry room, which leads to the outdoor fenced-in patio with table & chairs. Each living area has original pocket doors (the ones that slide into the cavities of walls and disappear when not in use) so that you can close off the living rooms, third bedroom, and foyer for privacy, allowing extra bedroom space if needed in the living room, or peace and quiet for those who wish to retire early.

The Elmwood is so loved that it inspired a book some years ago which gives a great accounting of its colorful and vibrant history! 'A Tale of the Elmwood District in Berkeley,' was described by Chronicle Staff Writer Charles Burress, in the Chronicle on Monday, January 1, 2001:

“Berkeley -- Just about every neighborhood has a story to tell, but few are remembered in time's long parade. But in Berkeley, a city passionate about protecting neighborhoods, there is one district so beloved by the citizens that it has inspired its own biography. 'Tales from the Elmwood' serves as a small museum not only of a place that has preserved a classic small-town charm but also of the extraordinary lives who've found a haven there.

The book's gallery of former Elmwood residents ranges from creative giants like painter Richard Diebenkorn to historical figures like Ishi, called 'the last wild Indian of North America' in the subtitle of Theodora Kroeber's well- known biography of him. Other famous folk have called Elmwood home, including Jane Fonda, Eldridge Cleaver, Thornton Wilder and Tom Dunphy, better known as 'General Waste-more-land' in many anti-war demonstrations....”

(The book is located at the house if you wish to read more about Berkeley and Elmwood's history.)

We loved staying in Elmwood, and this charming flat was perfectly located for walking, biking and easy access to everything. There is plenty of space to spread out, entertain guests and relax.

We found this beautiful home to be in a great area, in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood of Berkeley. The house was much larger than we expected, and we loved the open living spaces with pocket doors that divided them. We have family in Berkeley, and come out at least once a year. The location was perfect for us as it was flat and we were able to walk everywhere. Restaurants and coffee places on College Avenue were only a five minute walk through beautiful streets of old brown-shingle homes and rambling gardens. We walked to the UC Berkeley campus several days a week, enjoyed our regular visits to the Free Speech Cafe, and discovered a map and book existed (at the much loved Dalloway's Book store on college) which mapped the many oak and redwood trees on campus. We also visited a great selection of cafes on and off campus--our favorites were Cafe Nefeli on the north side, and Cafe Strada on the south side. We visited the Hearst Anthropology Museum - a must-see on campus, and also the award-winning Berkeley Art Museum in downtown Berkeley. The 27 libraries on the Cal campus are well worth visiting. Check out the Morrison and the Asian library - both stunning! We'll be back hopefully!

We had a wonderful stay here. Came to visit family and stayed at this house for the third time. We love it here obviously. It is a quiet, friendly, and peaceful neighborhood, and we can walk everywhere - even to dinner in the evening, theater, and UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall! The neighborhood is charming and beautiful and there are so many unique and historic properties and tree-lined streets. Our grand-kids love the two parks that are less than a 5-minute walk from the house, and the gourmet Ici ice cream on college Avenue. (There's often a line outside.) We loved walking along college Avenue and having dinner out in the evening. Walking around campus is also one of our favorite things to do - lots of beautiful buildings, and many oaks and redwoods. We love the Faculty Club, a Julia Morgan designed building on campus, and now restaurant where we had dinner every week. We will be back again!

My family and I travel A LOT...and let me say that we have rarely found a house that is so lovely, inviting, clean, well appointed, and in such a perfect neighborhood. We could truly walk to the market and shops, plus many fabulous restaurants. (Maura has excellent suggestions, and within the house, a lovely binder filled with information about the area, including restaurants, attractions, etc.) There is a playground up the block, so if you have little ones, this is a plus. It is also just a quick drive to SF and many other surrounding attractions, Muir Woods, Sausalito, etc. Maura was so accommodating for our children as well, aged 4 yrs and 15 mos. It was a wonderful treat to have not only the feeding chair, baby bathtub, baby bed, blankets, toys, and excellent books, to name some of the items provided...but, to have ones which were of such lovely quality. Thanks, Maura, for a fun, comfortable and relaxing stay. All best, The Groves Family

Nestled on a quiet street in the quaint and lively neighborhood of Elmwood, a charming house all bedecked in roses and passion vine awaited our arrival. We were warmly greeted by our hostess who exuded hospitality. Much to our delight we had found our "home away from home" to celebrate the marriage of our son. This Elmwood home is an architectural delight--boasting original trim and lovely built-in cupboards. We found it very clean, comfortable and cheerful, decorated in light coors reflecting the Berkeley sunlight, making it warm and cozy. It is a house of function as well as beauty. There is plenty of room for play and activity, and quality bed linens for good sleeping. The house boasts a fully equipped kitchen next to an expansive semi-formal dining room where a large table awaits good food a cheerful society of folk. we enjoyed breakfast on the private outside terrace. the location is perfect, tucked away and quiet but easy walking through lovely streets to cafes and shopping. It offered us a great place to work, to relax, and to celebrate. I whole-heartedly recommend this has the perfect spot to stay for any occasion.
