I've stayed at the Gainsborough a number of times over the years, and it has been my go to place in Bath owing to its fantastic location, and previously excellent service. The spa area was an added bonus, with use of the facilities.
However, I've noticed a gradual decline, notably since Covid. The spa area became more restricted, and now use for hotel stays have been limited to two hour windowns either side of the day. These times therefore, get pretty busy and just feel a little restrictive. The spa itslef has also gotten notably more expensive. This is probably on account of the included use of the spa area, but has been priced quite prohibitively for those looking just for a massage.
The room cleanliness was also a little less than expected. We found a big empty bag of crisps behind the curtains, suggesteing cleaning between guests is far from thorough.

What an amazing hotel - bang in the middle of Bath, prestigious, andxwhen you take into account access to the Spa, the breakfast and complimentary goodies, this is an amazing 5 star experience at great value. We will be bsck next year with family!

The hotel and spa were lovely and use of the spa was complimentary as part of the stay. However when we arrived we found that complimentary use was early morning at the time ( you would typically have breakfast ) and in the evening ( at the time you would have dinner ) so basically free access was at incovenient times and use of spa at all other times was not free. This really felt like a rip off given the amount we had paid and none of this information was made available when I made the booking to my knowledge.

What a fabulous night away with a couple of friends. Complimentary wine, cheese and crackers were a really nice touch.

We stayed here as part of are minimoon, we would not normally pay the price for hotel but pushed the boat out .
On first look all seemed ok ,but then found the door stop in bathroom was not attached to the floor was lent up on skirting board. The socket for plugging the kettle/coffee machine into couldn't plug all the way in ...not sure if broken or fault...2 light bulbs not working in main light fitting ...this is a 5* hotel .
Having said that the hotel was lovely, warm ,clean and all the staff we're friendly and helpful. All food was off excellent quality .

Amazing hotel. Would recommend for sure. Such friendly staff. Few niggles that were sorted like room nor made up until 3pm, breakfast was soooo slow and not much service in the bar. You can’t use the spa other than hours that don’t really suit so be aware the pools are not for general use all day. Don’t be fooled. I would 100% return

This is our third stay and we cannot fault it. We were lucky enough to be engaged and the staff were incredible!! Thankyou all for making it so special for us!

Lovely hotel, nicely furnished room. However our room on the first floor was quite noisy. Soundproofing could be better as we were both woken earlier than planned by noise from outside.
We also had afternoon tea in the restaurant. The food was excellent however the service was slow and at times non-existent. People who sat down after us were served before us and a request for an an extra round of sandwiches (which we would have happily paid for if required) was met with a flat “no we don’t do that”. Definitely far below 5* levels of service, which was a shame as the quality of the food could not be faulted.

Lovely underfloor heating in the bathroom too. Would definitely return and recommend

Very comfortable hotel in the centre of Bath, close to the Roman Baths and restaurants. Excellent staff who were really focused on customer service and on making our stay a great experience. I hope to stay here again when next in Bath

This is a regular stay for me and always enjoyable. Service is generally excellent and the spa is fun. My only criticism this time would be the cooked breakfast- nasty puck like hash browns and not a great sausage. I expect better given the level of service elsewhere. Stick to the continental brekkie.

Couldn’t be better placed for the major sights of Bath. The suite was a great standard and the extra touches very pleasant. Great gifts and little touches that made all the difference. If I had one criticism, there were three of us in the suite. It should have been set up with each towel size times three and the same for toiletries.

Never stayed in a 5* hotel before so nothing to compare it to but definitely seemed a high quality hotel.
Disappointing that my pregnant wife was not even allowed to sit in the pool area though

I stayed here for my birthday and it was absolutely phenomenal. The breakfast was the best I’ve ever had, and the staff could not help you enough! The Spa facilities are small but never busy and exquisite. I left feeling like a new person- thank you so much!

Old school unique hotel. note, NO parking, and if you have a car, finding you way around the tiny one way Bath city streets to park your car in some random lot is challenging! Especially as the GPS doesnt work so well there. But. There's nothing like this place anywhere. Oh and another thing, the cooked English breakfast was 40 pounds, and easily the worst I have eaten for a while. Go out into the city for that!

Set in the very centre of Bath, this hotel is ideally situated. It was a very late booking for me and I was initially drawn in by the available parking, but because I didn't receive the welcome email as I was already on my way, I missed pre-booking and never discovered what this was, having to park in a nearby underground park for the two days I stayed (£36). The hotel accessibility is very easy if you're NOT driving, but difficult if you want to unload outside (Road works when I was there) although the walk from the underground car park to the hotel was very easy with a wheeled case. Once in the hotel, everything is superb. Very polite & friendly staff who remembered my name (Something I could never do!), the rooms are spacious, bed large and comfortable, there is a Pod coffee machine, gown and slippers available. My room faced a quiet street, got the sun and was lovely. Let's be honest though, the main draw of this hotel is the fact there is a Roman Bath and Spa underneath. Guests get to use this free of charge for two hours in the morning and evening and you get full access if you have a spa treatment. Even during a free visit, it is never particularly busy, and the warm pools and saunas are a unique joy that are worth the extra you may have to pay over other hotels. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Gainsborough and don't think you can go wrong with this hotel if you're staying in Bath. Recommended.

A great stay here for a romantic weekend. Highly recommend the natural thermal baths, while the hotel was extremely clean and well presented.

We booked this trip as an anniversary treat. There’s so many hotels to chose from but this one stood out from the others / the photos gave it the extra edge. We arrived 30 minutes early as had arranged the hotels parking facility (not the cheapest but quite conveniently located) sadly we couldn’t check in until 3pm so waited in the reception with the concierge. After a short delay we were given our room at 3:20 not quite ideal as we felt awkward waiting in the reception whilst other delayed guests got taken to the bar for a free refreshment! Although I asked for a high rise floor for a better view sadly our 4th (top) floor room only had half a window view due to high plinths on the exterior. I approached reception to see about moving rooms to level 3 which had full window views. Sadly we were shown a rear room overlooking the close by offices. We decided to just sit it out in our darkened room. I strongly suggest the hotel make this clear on their booking system - top floor rooms are restricted in size and are much darker because of the plinth outside. The manager did call us the following morning bank holiday Monday asking if we wanted to move rooms / she did apologise again. We negotiated a visit to the Spa area at a time which suited us due to the restrictions on hotel guests usage of the Spa. It’s a shame the usage for hotel guests is limited to certain times. Our midday visit only had 2 other people using the areas. Overall we'd go back again - by far the best location.

Exceptional service. This is such a lovely hotel! The staff really make it extra special. Everyone is so kind & happy to help. Nothing is too much trouble. The spa is wonderful. There's something really lovely about bathing in the thermal waters. The bed was incredibly comfortable too. Having complimentary beers, mineral water and sodas as an option in a mini fridge. A great feature. We were gifted a bottle of wine for my husband's birthday, which was a very thoughtful touch & hugely appreciated. We didn't eat at the hotel due to making reservations at recommended restaurants due to being so central.
Residents have limited access to the spa during the stay unless booking a treatment. It's busy due to limited hours but never felt crowded. It has a unique atmosphere. It's a lovely stay. Location is great too.

The Gainsborough was the perfect hotel for our stay in Bath. The staff could not have been more helpful, the location was walking distance from many sights and the room was great.

This was a lovely hotel, centrally located, with complimentary spa access four hour per day. What more could I need?
(The only not great thing is the shower design which tends to splash water all over the bathroom if you’re not careful.)

Excellent hotel and facilities. Staff were friendly and extremely helpful throughout our stay. My only criticism would be the air-con in the room which was not effective and remained at a high heat despite getting a member of staff to help adjust and lower the temperature. Overall, an excellent stay and I would well recommend!
