About this house rental
Fresh, bright, and glorious! Views for mile and miles. Ocean, mountain and Riviera and Montecito views.
Super-conveniently located, the house sits up on a rise, just a block from the lush Santa Barbara City College Campus, 3 blocks from the sand and harbor, and 7 blocks from vibrant State Street. Walk to downtown or the shoreline for lunch or dinner, or shop the length of our main State.
Built in the early 1900’s, this classic and stately house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Freshly and completely restored, this delicious home has seen many phases, but remains largely as designed. The architectural flair of FLW is readily apparent throughout, whispering in the elegant giant redwood panelling, the divided windows and French doors, the original Tiffany light fixtures, and the built-in cabinets.
In the 1930’s the house was donated to a Sunny New Age commune These were gentle California-style healers with a peace and love mantra and a community garden. At the time, they added a separate East Wing to the property, which now houses apartments with a separate private garden.
The Prairie style house features multiple balconies and porches, skimmed by huge oak and olive trees. The garden is fully gated and gorgeously private, filled with foliage, song birds, and gracious outdoor furnishings. Wander the garden to find palm trees alongside orange, lemon and lime trees. Pick fresh pineapple guava in season, or lemons and oranges year-round.
There are individual AC and heat units in all three bedroom suites. The chef’s kitchen completely kitted out with a main and prep sink, Viking stove, European appliances, and every gadget imaginable. Original hardwood floors throughout.

My wife, Michele, and I spent the month of July at Alta Mesa and could not have been more pleased with everything. The Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture was breathtaking, complemented by beautifully landscaped gardens and shaded outdoor areas. The property was well-stocked with everything we needed for a wonderful stay, from the kitchen appliances and utensils to the large 72" TV. Alta Mesa had everything we could ask for during our time in beautiful Santa Barbara.
One of our favorite features was the long deck at the front of the house, offering stunning ocean views and delightful afternoon sun. The master bedroom is spacious, with French doors opening onto the upstairs deck, providing a perfect spot for relaxation.
Elizabeth, our host, was terrific. She communicated well and checked in with us to ensure we had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay.
The location was ideal—just three blocks from the beach and harbor, making it a perfect base for exploring the best of Santa Barbara.
Michele and I spend every July in Santa Barbara, and this is one of the best places we have enjoyed. I highly recommend Alta Mesa for your visit to the American Riviera.

I couldn’t have enjoyed my time more. The home, the location, the privacy, the yard with lemon and orange trees, the host—all perfect. ❤️☀️❤️

So much to say so I'll try to summarize:
The House: An exercise in style. Architecturally it's a fascinating early Frank Lloyd Wright and lovingly restored to a former beauty.
The interior is appointed as well as any home and outfitted with Casper mattresses and very high qual. linens.
We spent time outdoors every day. The shade and furniture are very refreshing and we felt like we were in a courtyard in Tuscany.
It's a MasterClass in how to style a home. I literally found myself studying every corner. It's the kind of home you'd see in a home fashion magazine, and I do think it's actually been photographed more than once for mags.
The neighborhood: A charming, central, older neighborhood. 20 mins walk gets you to downtown thru darling neighborhoods, 30 gets you to the beach where you can settle in or rent bikes to explore more.
The Host: We were intrigued by Leisa when we saw the home because it's fabulous, and then communicating with her made us ALL fall head over heels in love. She's one of my all-time favorite hosts, and I have hosts that have become lifelong friends, so I'm saying a whole bunch.
For a combination of all the qualities listed above, I couldn't get my family (two teens and daddy-o) to leave the house. I had some fabulous plans that they wanted to forego so they could stay in and read and cook at home.
It's worth every penny. There's nothing more I can say but just book it!
