About this house rental
Ferndale House is a special place nestled in the woods and overlooking the Kennebec River. The owner of the home is a children’s book author and as such, the name ‘Ferndale’ was borrowed from the imaginary place where her fictional characters live. Fittingly, the home is surrounded by ferns in the dells and glens around the house and sits next to 63 acres of conservation land. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the shoreline path or explore the trail lovingly called Dragon Spine, where young hikers can imagine they are tiptoeing up a dragon’s back! This private setting encourages a slower pace with plenty of room inside and out for families to gather and escape the whirlwind of life. Spend time together tucked away in the woods admiring an abundance of wildlife and the mesmerizing views of the Kennebec River. While remote, Ferndale House is an easy 15-minute drive to the charming little city of Bath where you will find restaurants, shops and necessities. The home sleeps 8 – primary bedroom is downstairs / den with pull out sofa is downstairs / two bedrooms upstairs
Home Layout:
Primary bedroom with a queen bed is located on the first floor. Bedroom has vaulted ceilings, views of the river and direct access to the deck
Full bathroom with shower/tub combo on the first floor (serves as primary bedroom’s ensuite and a pocket door offers the option of closing off from main area)
Pull-out sofa located in the downstairs den sleeps 2 (doors can be closed for privacy)
Washer/Dryer located on the first floor
Fully stocked kitchen flows into dining area and large living room
A screened-in porch offers another dining area (perfect for morning coffee!) and ample seating for reading a book or playing cards.
Expansive deck features river views, a grill and additional seating
Upstairs there are two additional bedrooms; 1 with a queen bed and the other with 2 twin beds.
A full bathroom with a walk-in shower is also upstairs
Ferndale is located in the rural town of Phippsburg with the closest downtown being in the town of Bath, a beautiful, quintessential New England town located along the banks of the Kennebec River. Deemed a 'distinctive destination' by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the downtown is lined with historic brick and granite buildings that showcase locally owned restaurants, bakeries, bars, and shops. Simply walking around the quiet, cozy side streets to admire the 100-200 year old homes that have been fully restored, is a wonderful activity. Or if you’d prefer, take the beloved trolley, named Charlie, to see the sights around town.
Bath is also home to the world class shipbuilder, Bath Iron Works, a working shipyard established in 1826. We encourage visitors to check out the Maine Maritime Museum to learn about the rich history of shipbuilding in the area.
Things to do in the area: Ferndale House is located only 25-minutes from Popham Beach State Park and 35 minutes to Reid State Park; two of Maine’s most epic beaches! A day at either beach with a picnic lunch, pails for collecting seashells, and a good book will not disappoint. Want to be on the water? There are many options to charter a boat to go fishing or sightseeing on the Kennebec River or in nearby Casco Bay. For the foodies in your group, the Maine Beer Trail and the Maine Oyster Trail are a fun way to see the area and with an abundance of microbreweries and oyster farms within a short drive, everyone can taste to their hearts content.
Head further east into the heart of the Midcoast region to explore quintessential coastal towns like Wiscasset (30 minutes and home of the famous Red Eats lobster roll), Boothbay Harbor (50 minutes), Camden and Rockport (both 1 hour 20 minutes). Head south to explore Freeport (35 minutes and home to L.L. Bean) or the City of Portland (1 hour). Bowdoin College is in the neighboring town of Brunswick (30 minutes away). Acadia National Park is 3 hours away.
A complete guidebook will be provided at the time of booking with many suggestions for day trips, restaurants, and activities in the area. Looking for a specific activity? Just ask! We are happy to help you find your happy place in Maine.
Accessibility: There are 3 steps to enter the home. The main floor does not require steps; there is a main floor bedroom and bathroom. Stairs are required for the additional two bedrooms and bathroom (upstairs).
Parking: There is free, off-street parking for four (4) cars.
