Well it's not super clean but you get a whole house near the beach for 20€ so it's a pretty sweet deal

On arriving at the property my first thought was that it was derelict. The garden was unkept and the outhouse next door was caved in. On knocking on the door the friendly Chizumi greeted me and showed me in. The whole house had the feel that someones grandparent had passed away and they decided to rent it out without making any changes. Chizumi-san showed me around. To get water from the tap to drink in the kitchen she had to punch the button on the water tap machine on the wall really hard twice before it splittered forth. All the appliances instructions were in japanese and i didnt have internet so i wouldnt have been able to use these or boil the kettle (i dont have internet and the house doesnt have wifi so google translate wasnt an option for me). I couldnt get the tap to work at all once Chizumi-san left. There was also no lock on thr front door and only a flimsy little catch on the bedroom door where i was to stay. I'm sure the place was clean enough but it really didn't feel like it because everything looked and felt very run down - the sliding doors in my bedroom were off the hinges, and grime aroun the backdoor handles. Because of the water situation and the unsatisfactory locks I didnt end up staying there because I didn't feel very safe and needed water. I ended up leaving and cycling another 15km into Imabari.

Very friendly women. I messed up the days but it was no problem and I could stay, she even picked me up at the next town.

The house is authentic, rustic. I had the house for myself so it was good. The hot tub was good
No shops around, you need to bring your own food because you're not gonna find anything within walking distance.
Pretty rustic place, not really confortable for people looking for a comfy place

Charming historic house with traditional futon sleeping. Surprisingly fabulous robot toilet. Allowed to use kitchen.
More like grandma's old village house that gets rented out without cleaning her stuff out,, rather than an actual hotel or properly set up pension.. Functional but not very clean or well kept common spaces (but the sleeping room and bathroom were very clean).
No WiFi.
Unable to figure out how to get the shower to produce hot water.

The hosts were very welcoming and kind. They showed us around the house when we arrived.
Location was good for the Shimanami Kaido. If you take the 'Island Explorer' route (外周コース), the accomodation is along the route. You just have to turn off the main road, go about 100m and you're there. There are conbinis and a supermarket about 3km away.
The house was cute, traditional and very large. It was fairly well-kept, for its size and age.
There were a few insects and spiders. But for its size and age, I actually thought the place was quite well-kept.

We liked that the place was remote (although if cycling or driving, it does take more than a few minute to reach from the main shimanami kaido route) in a very typical small Japanese village. The view of the village, beach and bridge are amazing!
There is a very nice small sandy beach 800m up the road from the house (find the tiny tori, or gate signalling the stairs) which was completely empty, just for us on that day we visited.
The lady greeting us was very nice, although you have to speak Japanese. She showed us around the house, including the living room, bathroom, and kitchen we were free to use at any time for cooking our own meals. The bathroom is good and spacious.
There are only two rooms there, so it is very quiet. When we stayed, only another traveler stayed at the house, and we shared a dinner together there. It was very nice. The lady managing the property does not live onsite, but a few minutes away, so it is possible you have the whole house for yourself !
We were a bit worried at first, but in the end we greatly enjoyed our stay!
It can be very hot in summer, and there is only one A/C in the entrance. There are many fans though. If you worry about being hot, you should request the front room (for 4 people) which is directly located next to the A/C. Once it's on for a few hours, the temperature is nice, even in the middle of August!
There is no convenience store or restaurant at walking distance, but we knew from other comments and description. But there are a few on the main Shimanami route on the way to the house, so we stopped by just before check-in.
The house is old and not renovated, but it is very cheap and also part of the whole experience in staying in a very traditional Japanese house.
There was an announcement over speakers at 6:30AM which woke us up. But check-out is at 11AM, which gave us a long time to relax.
