A little history about our fair neighborhood.....!
After Georgetown to the west, Capitol Hill is Washington's oldest neighborhood. In its earliest days, most of the residents were members of Congress who lived in boarding houses and dormitories surrounding the Capitol. As the neighborhood evolved, row houses replaced boarding houses and the Hill began to grow as a neighborhood filled with families, as well as Washington's who's who.
As you walk around this stately neighborhood, don't be surprised if you see faces you've seen in the news. A number of senators and representatives make their home on the Hill.
In addition to the U.S. Capitol, the Hill includes other significant American landmarks such as the U.S. Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Union Station, the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks, the Washington Naval Yard, Congressional Cemetery, Lincoln Park, and the Eastern Market. All of these sights are within easy walking distance and most are Metro-accessible. Just down the hill from the Capitol is the National Mall with all of the monuments and memorials iconic to Washington, as well as more than 10 museums and galleries of art and artifacts.
To the east of the Capitol is the ***Eastern Market***-one of the only remaining merchant markets left in Washington. While the market bustles during the week, it is on the weekends that it acquires its character and charm as residents from all over the city and visitors from all over the world come to the market to enjoy breakfast; purchase fresh meats, produce, and breads; stroll through the adjacent flea market; and browse the latest art and jewelry crafted by local artists and artisans.
During the spring and summer months, a visit to the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks at 8th and I Streets SE will allow you to see the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team in action.
This 24-man rifle platoon performs precision maneuvers with their 10.5 lb M-1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets.
***Over at the U.S. Capitol, the newly opened visitor's center allows visitors to experience the Capitol from the ground up. The center features several state statues in Emancipation Hall and a museum that chronicles the history of the U.S. Capitol from its cornerstone laying in 1789 by George Washington to the present day. You can buy your tickets for the Senate and House galleries are available here!
The Library of Congress' Jefferson Building, just across the street from the Capitol, is the world's largest repository of books and media in the world. ***The building is open to the public and the Renaissance and Classical art are breathtaking.***
These and other sites make staying on Capitol Hill a must if you're visiting Washington on business or for pleasure!!!!

This place is NOT as advertised. The pictures and the listing show 2 bedrooms, but there is only one bedroom. The “second” is a pull out couch in the living room that does not even pull out to a full bed! It was really disappointing. The apartment itself is old and dirty as well. As two young women staying there, we also felt unsafe with how long it takes to unlock all the doors to get into the apartment. Would not recommend this place at all.

Back in my old neighborhood.
I was nice to see how the area had changed and improved over the years.
This little basement apt. was adequate for my needs.
Allen was very responsive and his daughter checked in as well.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone though I don’t think it’s quite roomy enough for two adult couples.
There was no TV in the bedroom so if there was or kids they would all have to share watching tv together in the living room..
Fortunately that wasn’t an issue for me and my uncle.
Would absolutely stay here again.

Long Weekend Getaway
A very clean place in a nice Capitol Hill neighborhood. The owners were very thorough in their instructions and were very welcoming. Nicely situated near grocery stores and the Metro. I highly recommend and would stay there again!

Great vacation spot
This is a great little apartment that offers easy access to downtown DC, all the touristy spots, and is within walking distance of 8th Street, which had some nice restaurants on it. As someone who did not grow up in a city environment, I felt very comfortable and safe going for an early morning run by myself, not only in the area around the apartment, but also down towards Capitol Hill. Uber rides from the apartment to the museums and monuments were also relatively inexpensive (about $12-17 one way) and if you're up for the challenge, the walk back to the apartment from that area wasn't too bad either (about 2.5 to 3 miles). The apartment was clean and tidy, and Juliet was a great host who checked in a couple of times to make sure we had everything we needed. It was a pleasure staying here!

Great home base to explore DC
This basement apartment was exactly as advertised. It was just right for my sister and I to enjoy a few days exploring Washington DC.
It is just a few minutes walk from the Metro, a bus stop is at the corner and a grocery store is around the corner. You can be to Capitol Hill or the National Mall in just a few minutes.
The hosts were easy to work with and checked in with us to make sure things were okay. I would definitely stay here again.

Great spot and fantastic hosts!
My son and I spend 4 nights at this apartment, and it was perfect for us. The apartment was exactly as shown, and was super clean and inviting. The instructions for how to access WiFi, etc were clear. Our hosts, Allen and Juliette were incredibly responsive as well! We had one minor issue with some outlets and they responded right away when I asked them about it.
The apartment has all the basics you would need: toaster, pots and pans, and even some basics (salt and pepper, etc). Water pressure is GREAT.
We were pleased that the grocery store was one block away, right near the Metro stop. It only took minutes for us to get to the Metro and we stopped at the grocery store on our way back. We felt very safe walking back at night. We experienced just normal nighttime city neighborhood activity, nothing unusual.
The parking spot was a bonus (for a fee but worth it for us). We could hear the inhabitants of the apartment upstairs walking around, but that is normal for apartments. The building and neighborhood were quiet at night.
The pull out couch was comfortable (according to my kid) and we found ourselves just lounging on it after a long day sight seeing. We both agreed that we'd 100% stay here again!!

Enjoyed our stay
We rented this apartment because of the easy access to Metro, close to a grocery store and close to the Capitol. We didn't have to rent a car which saved us money and the hassle of parking. We enjoyed shopping at Harris Teeters grocery store. Great selection of food.
Kitchen was just what we needed for fixing all meals. Just make sure the refrigerator door is closed, especially at night or when leaving apartment. A couple of times we noticed it hadn't closed completely.
Bathroom is small but sufficient for taking quick showers.
As a few others have reviewed, you can hear people walking around in the upstairs apartment usually in the evenings.
Allen called us during our stay, which we really appreciated.

A must if you're heading to DC
Love this property! It is the second time we choose it. The property manager is always on hand and is easy to reach if a question arises. It is convenient to the metro, great deli/food store and bus route and was safe walking to all at all times of the day. It is clean and comfy and has a secured parking area (which was nice to lock the car doors and not worry about the car for a week) Also thanks for the warm weather we got to enjoyed the patio out back!

Not What We Expected
We recently made a trip to D.C. and struggled on whether to stay in the city or outside. We found this place on VRBO and after reading the reviews it seemed like a nice place and in a good location. However, when we arrived we quickly realized that we were wrong. I will say that the inside was relatively clean and updated and the pictures were not deceptive, but there were not many towels or wash cloths for three people (we had to wash them after two days), the shower curtain was badly mildewed, we had to battle mosquitos inside (the owner did bring some "Off" and placed a bug zapper inside the apartment after I brought the issue to his attention),and we received a list of rules from the owners stating that parties were not allowed and requested us to observe "quiet time" so as not to disturb the neighbors. However, the young ladies next door had a party our first night there and kept us up until 2am. With all that aside, I would be willing to overlook the above mentioned issues. More importantly though this house is not located in a good part of town. I will not elaborate, but I am a police officer of 17 years and if I had known where this house was located I would never had reserved it. Obviously I will have to research more thoroughly in the future.

The Little House of Horrors
This unit was not as advertised. The actual address was not given to us until after receipt of payment. It is located across the street from the Projects with all the accompanying activity you might expect. The used condom in the street where you'd park your car precipitated a discussion I'd rather not have had with our 7 yr old grand daughter. We knew it was a basement unit, but didn't anticipate the moldy wet steps terminating in a shallow well with an open drain breeding a multitude of hungry mosquitoes as you unlock the 3 locks to get in. The stairs were constantly wet and it was like walking on a sheet of glass with no handrails to help. Upon arrival, the bathroom looked like it belonged in an old gas station. The toilet was quite moldy, the owner came to show us where the toilet brush was, whisked it twice around the black bowl with no cleaner, then removed it dripping all over the toilet seat and considered it done. No supplies to clean with, we obtained some and spent an hour cleaning someones else's excrement. Upon taking a shower, the nozzle was heavy with mold, and the drain backed up. Owner wondered why that was a problem since it would eventually drain out. We had to explain we didn't want to stand in someone else's soap scum and hair. The shower tiles are not entirely grouted either so more mold. An open 5 X 7 inch hole, cut out from the drywall opened the unit to anything crawling in the walls, and the vacumn was so gross we wouldn't touch it. The electrical was overloaded with cords everywhere and quite creative. Any attempts at repair or caulking were awful. The only bedroom had one window with bars on it that I was unable to open. Didn't sleep too well worrying about a fire. We would have relocated but had taken our grand daughter for a set number of days out of school. Having scheduled a White House Tour and a Capital tour as well as monuments and museums we didn't have time to relocate. We checked for other vacancies but didn't have the time or money to solve this problem and still complete the vacation our grand daughter would have to complete to have her days excused. .This unit was deep down grungy, just sorry there's no room for a 0 star review. We will never pay for something again that we haven't seen, so I guess no more VRBO. Totally not as advertised. Multiple pictures upon request

The apartment, though small, completely met our needs.
Our need was unique as we were not visiting DC as tourists. For us the location was critical as we were assisting our daughter in moving out of her condo which was directly behind the property. This property met our location need perfectly. Beyond that the apartment met our needs in terms of facilities, beds, etc. It was very clean and in good repair. The hosts provided clear and detailed instructions regarding checking in and out, using appliances, the TV, etc. and responded immediately to our one request.

Good location
We mostly enjoyed our stay. Pros: Owners were responsive, location was great - quick walk to the Metro, grocery store around the corner. Through no fault of the owners, the noise upstairs (other renters) kept me awake 2 of the 4 nights (walking around upstairs, getting ready for early flights, etc). Again, the location is great...just wish there was more noise separation from upstairs.

Great location and accommodations!
My family of three stayed here and it was perfect. Plenty of space, clean, organized and very comfortable. My son loved the pull out couch. Felt like home. Allen was extremely helpful and accommodating. Potomac metro and Harris Teater are just a couple of blocks away. Eastern Market area is about a quarter mile away but worth the walk to see the shops and local retailers on the weekend.
We took the metro (which is extremely easy to navigate) in to the city every day. After a long day of touring it was nice to come back, make a quick meal and relax. I will definitely rent again.

Loved it!
I was traveling alone this business trip and everything worked out better than my expectations. The unit was perfect in size, location, and a block from there grocery store! Metro just under two block walk. It is a basement unit and did get a little "close" at times but the dehumidifier handled it perfectly. I look forward to staying here on my return trip.

Great Location!
This was my first experience with VRBO. I was apprehensive conducting business via internet and not speaking directly to anyone (being of a certain age) but found that all my questions were answered in a timely fashion and the instructions were very helpful in understanding how the property functioned and my responsibilities as the tenant. We knew what was supplied and what to bring. We knew how to access the unit and how to leave it. Shopping was close by and the Bus just at the corner made it so easy to get to the National Mall for our touring adventure.
The only thing we discovered not accurate in the instructions were that there no longer is locker storage for luggage at Union Station. Also, upon arriving, when we exited at the Potomac Ave Metro Station from Reagan, we were confused with the direction to the property, so could have used a bit more instruction there (our phone GPS wasn't helpful), but fortunately found a friendly person who pointed us in the right direction.
Our party was 2 adults sleeping separately. One of us was on the sleeper, so it accommodated one, but we could not figure if it could be converted to a double as advertised?
Also, directions for TV "looked" adequate, but we found it puzzling to get functioning and had difficulty accessing a station guide.
I have 2 furnished rentals (not VRBO) in Arizona, and the following comments are made from my personal experience and bias.
Unit could use: a floor lamp next to sofa
a safety bar in shower
labeling lighting switches (3-way) and adding dimmers
shelving and or receptacle for luggage (rack?) in bedroom
better linens and additional blankets
Thank you for a great first VRBO experience, though! We loved Washington, had a blast, learned a lot!!

Nice and comfortable
We enjoyed staying in the apartment. It was perfect and comfortable for 2 people. It had all the amenities we needed to stay for a week. We enjoyed walking 5 blocks, regardless of the weather, to restaurants in the Eastern Market and Naval Barracks area and took the Metro to see museums and the Cherry Blossoms. The tote bag on wheels provided was very helpful for food shopping at Harris Teeter nearby. The gated parking in the back was much appreciated. Allen was very responsive to our needs.

Fair/good
Pluses: Close to Capitol Hill attractions, seemingly safe neighborhood, quiet, nice bed
Minuses: Bedroom is TINY, stubbed my toe every night I tried to get around the bed to bathroom-about 9 inches between bed and wall. Stingy on towels and towels provided are worn. Not sure why the there is such a harsh penalty to change the sheets? Costly to park and use BBQ. Not particularly comfy couch.
