This beach house is close to Hilo farmer's market, restaurants, shopping, waterfalls, volcano national park with active volcano, farmer's market, tours, astronomy center, university of Hawaii, Hilo medical center (hospital), and visitor activities.
House is equipped with kayak, boogie boards and beach equipment, Netflix, and high speed cable internet access (WIFI).
Available year round for nightly, weekly, and extended stays.
I manage these homes personally with my cell number available to all guests. Payments are handled through the security of the Homeaway/VRBO site. Guests also receive information on restaurants, shopping and my favorite places to visit.
Why this property?
This new house was constructed to be a world class beach park house. Large windows open to large decks. Breezes blow right through the house. Wall controlled ceiling fans throughout. Ceiling lighting, only the nicest appliances. Leather couches, wood flooring, complete cookware.
Unique benefits:
If you plan on staying more than a couple days, you will have to enjoy the location. If you love the water and especially snorkeling, you will not find a better location. The best snorkeling is in just a few feet of water right in front of the black sand beach. It is like swimming in a tropical fish store. Green sea turtles come to rest for the night in the evening at the rocks just beyond the black sand beach. The water is largely sheltered by the rocks creating a partial lagoon. Yet this house is just down the street from downtown Hilo. Great for quick trips out to eat, shopping and many tourist locations. Review the "location" tab for a list of over 20 great places to see.

Beautiful view of ocean from balconies! The amenities provided at the Hibiscus House were so appreciated. Lots of kitchen supplies, spices, bathroom amenities. Richard was a wonderful host and very responsive. The kitchen, dining and master are upstairs, and the outside plants are very fun to explore. We used a boogie board but didn’t take advantage of the SUP and kayaks in the shed.

My family stayed here for 3 nights. House was beautiful, clean and roomy. View from house was lovely. Beaches right across the street. Would definitely recommend!

We had 3 days in Hilo and the other 3 days were at Kona. We really loved our time at this property. The beach was a perfect playground for all of the members in our family. Close to town to try some local food and loved that it wasn’t filled with tourists. We were reminiscing about the spot all through our time on the Kona side.

Beautiful, comfortable, island breeze house

We loved having the ocean across the street and waking up to a tropical sunrise every morning. We appreciated the extra amenities at the property like the paddle board, flotation devices and coolers. The rental had plenty of room for our family of eight. We were able to cook most of our meals here too. The only problem we had was with the sound on the TV but who needs TV when you are in Hawaii? We appreciated how close our location was to many of the "do-not-to-miss" sites on this side of island. We would definitely come again.

Had a really good time. View of ocean and snorkling areas were so convenient. Not far from town. Be prepared for humidity. Noise restrictions a little daunting. Although motorcycles going back and forth after 9 was annoying. Overall we had a great stay.

It was a really great location. Being able to walk just a few minutes to Richardson Beach was magical.

The house is amazing. We never felt like we were on top of one another as it is extremely spacious and well laid out.
Kudos for having boggy boards, a tandem, kayak etc., it made for great family fun and wonderful pictures. I recommend replacing the bikes as they are rusty, and the tires were flat. I would also suggest the house be supplied with more paper towel and toilet paper to accommodate guest. We enjoyed the board games that were provided which created much laughter for our game night. I highly recommend this house. I would not hesitate to rent this house again, and highly recommend it.

Wonderful property with extras you don’t normally find in a rental house

Host was amazing, we arrived and check in was easy and location was perfect. Everything we needed to enjoy the beach was here.

House in a great location across from the beach. Owner provided a ton of useful info ahead of visit.

Property very well kept. Plenty of room for the 10 of us. Close to airport and great resturants. We had a great time.
4.8
Great space, lots of room for multi family gathering. The deck was amazing, great view and space to hangout. Enough room for everyone to have their own space and sleep comfortably. Appreciated lots of dishes and cutlery for bigger meals! Beach across the road was excellent for relaxed snorkelling.
4.8
What a wonderful location for a group of friends to gather and explore the Hilo area. Lovely home. Amazing view! You can’t get closer to the ocean and the turtles.

Overall the space was as advertised. Able to accomdate our group and provided everything we needed to do all of the activities we wanted to do. We will absolutely try to rent this property, or any peoperty managed by this owner, in the future.
The only drawback was the late check in time and that the cleaners were still cleaning when we arrived for check-in. However once we saw the size of the place we could certainly understand that it took some time to clean. A great stay in a beautiful home.

The grandkids loved it so much they want to pool their allowances and buy the property!
We had one glitch though Richard. There was a sign on Kalanianole St on Tuesday wvening that the water would be turned off overnight starting at 8. We called the city and they confirmed it. We got home at 7 and were in a panic. We saved all the water we could, washed dishes by hand, but were not able to do all the laundry we intended for you. Sorry about that. But blame the city! Thank you!

We had 3 generations of family on vacation for Christmas and New Years. The beach house had ample space for everyone. The views from the decks are amazing. The beaches are very popular during the day but had no issues. The toys in the shed are a nice amenity. We brought our own snorkel masks but the flippers, bikes and SUP board were fun. My grandsons loved looking for geckos. The sea turtles love the rocky beaches and shallow pools across from the house. Thank you for sharing this home and the island spirit with us. Mahalo!

This isn't the owners fault and I really wanted to love this house because of it's beautiful location, very nice host and the amenities that came with with it, but two things spoiled the experience.
As other reviewers have noted, the house is adjacent to a fairly busy road. The beautiful lagoon and park are just across that road from the house. We were unprepared for just how popular this road and park were with the local hot rod and motorcycle enthusiasts.
From roughy 10am-10pm every day cars and motorcycles would run up and down this road (multiple passes from the same vehicles) screeching tires, doing burnouts and revving engines. With no AC in the house, windows and patio doors were always open. The sound from the road was so loud in the house that at many times you could not carry on a conversation or watch TV.
Secondly, the area (and much of Hilo) is infested with Coqui Frogs. These frogs begin their song as soon as the sun goes down and the noise averages about 88-90 decibels. Again, no AC, so windows must be open, this made it very difficult for the little kids to fall asleep.
As I've said, neither of the noise issues is the fault of the owner and I can appreciate the problems it creates for them.
The house itself is old and needs a very thorough cleaning and refresh of moisture damaged furniture and fixtures, however, the wonderful and free selection of water toys in the outdoor shed was a hug benefit to us. We used them often. Great place. Too noisy

We absolutely love it here! The home is spacious and the ocean is footsteps away. Richard is great and we highly recommend his residence.

Very nice property with a local feel. Family had plenty of room. There were 6 adults and 1 infant. everything you need for a family vacation. Hope to return someday.
4.8
relaxing visit to the big island.
4.8
The area was located near the shoreline with beautiful
scenery. Great view from upper balcony.
4.8
Good location otherwise. Short drive to most everything we wanted to see and do.
4.8
The location of the Hibiscus house was perfect! There were six adults and two children and we had plenty of room to spread out. I appreciated the well stocked bathrooms and kitchen. Plenty of towels too. We had a fabulous time.
4.8
Beautiful home and well equipped. Spacious and close to beaches.
4.8
The house really brought our whole extended together. There was good privacy and good rooms for get togethers.
4.8
Our group really enjoyed this place. Things are a little dated but there have been many upgrades to the house. The cork board needs attention, updates and cleaning. No place to hang towels. Kitchen was well stocked as were the bathrooms.

This was our first time to the Big Island. We stayed here to explore Volcano National Park and take a helicopter ride. We had two families with 8 pp total. The house fit us well. Kitchen was well equipped. The house is not air conditioned, so thankfully it was not too hot while we were there. Wifi worked well, which was necessary as one of our group had to work a bit while there. The ocean park is directly across the road and was beautiful. We appreciated the umbrellas left by the door, as it rained everyday, at least a portion of each day. They were repaving the road out in front of the house, so one of our days there was a bit of a pain to have to park on a side street and walk to the house. No control of that by the owner though, and now the road is very nice to drive on. Overall, it was a great stay for a larger group.

Fell asleep on the deck listening to frogs sing. Woke and practiced yoga on the deck to crashing waves and bird songs. Walked the shore looking for turtles Snorkeled, Paddle Boarded and sat in the ice pond to recover. We also drove to a beach to go boogie boarding. All the toys were in the storage shed or we reached out to Richard. He does EVERYTHING he can to make the stay FIVE STAR!!
The beds were comfy! The house was spacious! The kitchen was well stocked. Everything was clean. It is located close to the stores & airport. The only downside was how sad I felt to leave! I am told that is the price of a wonderful vacation. I can’t wait to go back!
This was our second time we rented from Richard. We were very fortunate to have picked the best first!!😃
4.8
Location is very good would be excellent if it wasn’t for all the traffic that goes up and down the road, some like to rev their engines and speed. Parks in the area are busy, best to get out early. House could use some help with both replacing some items and cleaning a little more throughly. Overall it wasn’t to bad!
4.8
This charming property on the rainy side of the island was in an excellent location for families. Great swimming within an easy walking distance, we enjoyed the sounds of the jungle at night, and the house was well equipped with everything we needed including water toys. Our one suggestion would be some towel hooks in the bathroom to hang up after showering. Hilo is humid so nothing drys very well!
4.8
The layout of the house was fantastic for our group of 3 couples. Not only did we all have our own space, but the common areas were spacious enough for us to gather comfortably. We even utilized the living room, smart tv and youtube, and did group morning yoga.
We loved the location. When looking out at the ocean we not only had a beautiful view, but we had walking access to a black sand beach with sea turtles (3 minute walk to the right of the property).
We purchased simple meals to prepare for our group and found all the kitchen items needed to make our food including spices in the cupboard (I have stayed in many places, and this isn't always the case).
If you are traveling with family or friends, this property would defijnitely be recommended for a nice quiet stay in Hilo.
4.8
the property is beautifully located across from Waiolena Pond - safe, quiet, beautiful! The house is comfortable and held 12 of us easily. There were enough towels, loved the kitchen, the whole house was a wonderful experience!!!
4.8
We loved staying here, the size of the home and location were perfect. Lots of extras provided in the shed.
Recommend keeping washer door open between washes to air it out.
4.8
The property was exactly as expected - clean and well stocked for our stay. Lots of towels, everything we needed in the kitchen. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable. The location was super convenient, I loved that we could pop across the street so the kids could enjoy the water without having to load up the car and drive somewhere! We will definitely be back and book this place again on a future trip.
4.8
The property was beautiful and very clean. The view from the lanai was just what we were looking for.
4.8
Everything was perfect -- everything we needed, except a can opener but we left one.
4.8
Best Hilo has to offer!
4.8
We LOVED this house! It was clean, spacious, comfortable, and perfect for our family group of 7, with room to spare. The location is excellent, and we appreciated the variety of beach/water equipment, including boards, beach towels and booties that were provided. The kitchen had everything we needed too. What we especially loved was the look and feel of the furnishings and decor that created a beautiful welcoming Hawaiian ambience. We were really happy with everything about the Hibiscus house.
4.8
The house was just perfect for our family. 3 groups of us met from 3 states for Thanksgiving. It was a perfect location. The lagoon was such an experience for all of us. The house layout worked so well for us. Would definitely recommend!
