About this house rental
A refurbishment that is still a work in progress, our rustic home in the town of Forrest is a wonderful place to stay whether you are exploring the Otways, the Great Ocean road, having dinner at Brae, or just spending a weekend discovering Forrest's mountain bike trails and brewery.
Our home is comfortable and cosy. We stay there ourselves as often as we can, but it is a small and pretty basic house, so if you are expecting 4 or 5 star accommodation, it will not be for you!
NOTE: What we offer may be different to what you experience with other stays, so please read the following carefully.
We offer a basic experience and only supply mattresses and pillows. You will need to bring your own bed linen, quilts, towels and blankets.
Also, if you are planning to use the wood heater, you will need to bring enough of your own firewood, kindling, and firelighters to last the duration of your stay, which can be picked up at any of the service stations along the way. Note that the main fireplace does not work
Forrest is a relatively remote town, so stock up on any food or condiments that you think you will need for your stay. Our kitchen is fully equipped, so you shouldn't have a problem once you are here.
Forrest and the house get cold in the winter months. We have a couple oil heaters and a wood heater, but pockets of the house can still get cold, so pack accordingly. .
The bathroom is neat but basic, with a shower over bath, but the water is hot and runs well.
Please be aware that we have 4 security cameras on the outside of the house. There are no cameras inside.
You should expect to bring anything you would bring for a camping holiday. Forrest is a remote town, with limited supplies available at the General Store.
As a guide, on your list to bring, should be:
- Bed linen, including quilts, sheets and pillowcases.
- Towels.
- Extra blankets, or sleeping bags if visiting during the colder months.
- Food, drink and condiments, including milk, tea and coffee.
- Toilet paper, paper towels.
- Insect repellent, sunscreen.
- Firewood, kindling, fire starters, lighters, if you plan to use the wood oven/ fireplace.
- A full tank of fuel in your car.
What we provide:
- Mattresses and pillows – we do not provide any bed linen or towels.
- Our kitchen has all the utensils and amenities you would need to cook/ prepare meals for an extended stay, including an oven, kettle, toaster and fridge. If you have any specific kitchen utensils or appliances you might need, please bring these yourself.
- Internet, fast and reliable enough for remote working
- Internet connected tv.

We had the cosiest stay in Forrest. Our 3 young kids loved being across the road from the playground. The wood heater was a dream and kept us beautifully warm. The house was exactly how we expected. Marty was contactable when needed. We would definitely stay here again.

Great value stay. The heaters that are supplied keep the place warm if you don't use the fireplace. Kitchen is well-stocked with plenty of space for cooking and food preparation. Owner's instructions were really detailed and helpful - was glad to see that internet is available, which came in very handy when I had to do some work unexpectedly.

Great value in a great town. The house was better equipped than the description with a lovely outlook from the verandah and the kids made use ofbthe Forrest Common and tennis courts, playground opposite. Perfect for the mtb riding family.

We really enjoyed our stay in Forrest. The house was very cosy with everything you need for a great break. Location was perfect for us, our kids really enjoyed going over to the park at the Commons whilst we enjoyed keeping an eye on them from the balcony. Conveniently located to the bike and walking trails and just a short walk to the General Store and Brewery.
Communication with Marty was exceptional, would definitely stay here again.

My partner and I were both happy we chose this property for a quick weekend away.
The house had everything we needed and it wasnt really a bother to have to bring the bedding and towels with us. Loved the cozyiness of the lounge room with the fireplace and big tv!
Location was excellent for Lake Elizabeth which was one of my main reasons for choosing this place in Forrest. Id love to come back!

The Timber-Mill workers cottage was perfect for our family getaway to the Otways. The cottage was clean, neat and contained everything we needed for our stay. The description of the property was accurate, and communications from the host were clear and helpful in advising what to expect and what to bring with us to make the most of our stay.
The location is great, opposite the town common, and short walk to the local pub, brewery and general store/cafe. Also a short drive to Lake Elizabeth and very central for exploring the waterfalls, passes and forest trails and surprisingly close to the coast for beach access.
I would definitely stay again.

From checking to check out, Marty and Amanda were amazing hosts. Communication is key and the couple were always in touch when needed. The cottage itself is a dated little dwelling similar to most houses in Forrest, so please don’t go expecting a posh hotel. The house has been beautifully updated in all high use areas including the kitchen, dining and master bedroom- in fact, the kitchen is better than what we have at home!
This cottage is suitable mainly for a single family but also fine for two adults if one is happy to play rock paper scissors for the big bed. I visit Forrest occasionally and will be using this place again and am recommending it by word of mouth too. Thanks Marty and Amanda

An escape from the city
The Timber Mill worker's cottage is everything it promises to be and more. This simple rustic home had everything we needed. Dress warm in winter and be prepared to build your own fire - this was all part of the fun for our boys from the city who honed their mountain biking skills daily.

Good base to explore Forrest
Overview was most accurate. Basic accommodation met our needs. Grass was on the long side.

Rustic Charm made for a relaxing break
For a mountain biking family the cottage had all the basics to recover and refuel for the next days ride. The blurb said it was rustic and it delivered all it promised but it was a great base for our kids to access the trails of Forrest.

Great location and cute cottage
We had a lovely stay in the timber-mill workers cottage. The location is great, across from the town common. Lovely peaceful spot to sit out on the deck and gaze out into green space. Lots of great space for the kids to run around too.
House is certainly a little draughty and not mozzie proof but we had fair warning. The fire was great, heating up the main living space in no time.
The kitchen was amazingly stocked for a rental, bread maker, plenty of cooking utensils, pots and pans etc. It made cooking for a family a breeze.

Very unimpressed
I have been wavering about writing this negative review, but I feel it only fair, especially for people travelling with children. Please be aware that the louvre windows in the bathroom do not close properly and that a large gap exists under the front door of the house. This means 2 things: 1. The house is not lockable 2. With no fly screens, (many) mosquitos and other insects have ample entry points into the house. For us, this meant sleepless nights and multiple mosquito bites. Needless to say, the kids suffered through this the most. The owner's solution of a front door inside snake for "sealing" the door gap, was rendered useless, because it couldn't be put in place upon leaving the house. This gave insects free reign to enter the house in time for our return. In addition to this, we were horrified to find stained linen on the bed in the master bedroom. In light of the pricey per night accomodation fee, we requested some financial compensation in the form of a 50% refund for the highly sub-standard conditions described above. From that point on, the owner ceased all contact with us, including responding to multiple requests to have a small box of our (not inexpensive) daughter's belongings shipped back to us (she had left them in a drawer). Weeks passed before the owner sent our items back. For this, we are very thankful, but without any communication whatsoever, this left us in limbo as to whether we needed to re-purchase some of the much needed items. With regret, very disappointed lodgers.
