About this house rental
The Short & Sweet description: Newly renovated book-filled home in the Town of Olive sleeps 12-15 across three floors (6 bedrooms with various sized beds plus a sleeping nook) There’s a great deck and some sweet seasonal mountain views- in winter especially! We have a bright & totally stocked kitchen, with all the necessary appliances and all new gear, and the home is surrounded by quiet, except for the sounds of a nearby creek. The stars come out at night, and you might hear owls or fox. Some days only two cars pass by. There is lots of privacy, as we are tucked in just right, on a dead end road which contains a mix of primary and secondary homes. Only two neighbors are peeking through the leaves in summer. Breathtaking views and plentiful outdoor spaces are nearby to connect you back to nature. Our home is perfect for both large groups or small, one couple or solo retreats. Friends have come here to finish writing their book, lose their cell phone addiction (though there is service!!), paint their masterpiece, unplug, play games and snuggle up to one another. Our most recent summer guests included a film crew of 14 who shot their film here. Come and unwind. We would love to share our favorite place with you.

Come experience mountain inspired quiet in this peaceful light filled home up a winding road on a hillside, nestled in view of a few Catskill peaks. The fall is the sweetest time here- the colors, the cool air, fires by the fire pit with everyone wrapped in sweaters. In Fall, the sound of the mountain stream just past the edge of the property is still delightful. Birches are visible from nearly every window, and sounds of great horned owls, foxes, turkeys and songbirds fill the quiet in this lovely neighborhood on a dead end road. Hearing a car go by is a rare occurrence. The house has several places to sit and read, or gather for connection time with kids or your beloved. There are also several nooks and crannies both indoors and outdoors, where solitude can be found even if the house is full of people. The living area has vaulted ceilings with sliding doors to the deck and skylights- the natural light is great all year round! We love to sit on the front lawn in the Adirondack chairs, or on the sunny deck, and take in the mountain views and feel our bodies relax. Enjoy family meals at the farmhouse table, or dine out on the deck, where the breezes are divine and the night stars astound! Or cozy up in the finished furnished basement, where a gas stove makes things extra toasty and the you can binge-watch your favorite shows on the smart TV, or browse our collection of DVDs. The kitchen is fully stocked with a large stove, additional counter seating for drinks or snacks, and an array of basic spices, staples and utensils for quick and easy food preparation. There is a gas grill for your use as well. At night, there is a fire pit for connecting with one another, and the house is equipped with wi-fi.
The 3 acre property is gently wooded, with an gently sloping front grassy yard, and has a small seasonal stream running through it. The house is set adjacent to lovely protected lands, for hiking, meandering or forest bathing. We have big boulders for picnicking on, for the kids to make mountains out of, and plenty of treasures from Mother Earth: hawk feathers, milkweed pods, bear scat, tiny snakes, chipmunks everywhere, rocks, birch bark, fungi, lichens and natural springs coming up from the earth.
Inside, the house is stocked with books and board games, and is great for hide and seek. The main floor has an open feel to it, and you can interact with the chef while he or she cooks. There is a living room with large couch, and a 1st floor den that is enclosed with french doors which doubles as a bedroom, making it ideal for two families or couples to share the home and feel as though they have private quarters. The brand new sleeper sofa converts to a full sized bed with soft topper and that bedroom/den has an armoire for storing clothing. On the second floor, there are three bedrooms plus one curtained off sleeping area, called the Nook by our beloved guests who fight over who gets it. With a full sized futon mattress, a window for catching the breeze, and curtains for privacy, its a sweet place to crash. The master has a king bed and views of the mountains, one bedroom has three twins, and one has a queen which is nestled into the smallest of the bedrooms for a truly ensconced feeling. Each of the two walkout basement's bedrooms have a nice sized basement window, and are really cool in the summer. During winter months, we provide ceramic and electric heaters in the basement bedrooms for additional warmth, though the gas stove in the basement heats up the basement beautifully. One basement bedroom contains a queen bed, and one contains two twins beds. The house comes with all sorts of different quilts and duvets, so that there is always the right amount of warmth if needed. There is also a twin sized blow up mattress in the house for overflow guests. A few dozen Egyptian Cotton towels are there for guests' use, as are pillows and extra bedding.
The upstairs full bathroom has a bathtub and shower, and there is a half bath on the main floor, right near the brand new washer and dryer which guests are free to use, with the provided detergent, and a clothesline as well. A 10 minute drive will bring you to the IGA foodstore which is great for stocking up on basics. Mother Earth Storehouse in Kingston is just about the greatest food store we have ever tried, and well worth the pitstop on your way in from the thruway. Several local nearby restaurants in the Ashokan Reservoir area offer pizza, cupcakes, fresh baked bread and breakfast and lunch, and Marty's around the corner on 28A is the perfect place to stop in for stuff you forgot, or to grab a sandwich and a great cup of coffee or tea.
From the house, it's 23 minutes to the center of Woodstock, for natural food shopping at Sunflower Food Market, or for a great smoothie. Be sure to visit the Golden Notebook bookstore- it is just as bookstores should be. Maverick Concert Hall, a cathedral like music hall, is a beautiful blend of all types music in the woods, including several children' concerts over the year, and has been in operation for 102 years. In Woodstock, you can hike Overlook mountain, or grab a bite to eat at one of their unique restaurants. Fiber Flame, just down the road from Woodstock center in Saugerties, offers a unique art making experience for almost all ages, is a favorite for our family, and is about a 25 minute drive. We are 18 minutes to Phoenicia, a cool old town on the Esopus which is home to the internationally acclaimed Festival of the Voice each August. Phoenicia is also a favorite place to rent tubes and tube the Esopus Creek. Deep Blue, a locally treasured swimming hole is a short drive from the house, and a great way to get cool. You can also make your way to Pine Hill Lake, 30 minutes away, as it offers beach swimming, boating, picnicking and fishing, at 15$ per car. Rhinebeck, 45 minutes away, offers a beautiful hiking through Ferncliff Forest, and NY Sheep & Wool Festival. In New Paltz, also 45 minutes from the house, is home to Karma Road - an organic vegan restaurant- and is a great place to eat if you wanted to walk or ride the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail which runs 22 miles from Kingston to Wallkill. The walkway over the Ashokan, just about 10 minutes from here by car, is positively a meditative experience at sunset. Lastly, Rosendale, a town that has what friends here call 'the real spirit of Woodstock', is a really neat town to explore, with a theater, drumming circles in the park, neat thrift stores and dining al fresco with live music. Skiing at Bellayre is about a 35 minute drive, and Hunter Mountain and Ski Wyndham is about 50 minutes from here. We are happy to supply you with guide books, pamphlets and information on all the area has to offer, but sometimes the best experiences are the unplanned ones you stumble on while out exploring.
Well-behaved, groomed, flea and tick treated dogs are welcome to stay, as long as they stay off the furniture. Cats, unfortunately, can't make the visit, though we do bring our cats here occasionally for longer stays, so those with cat-allergies should take note. There is air conditioning, though other than heat waves in August, we find that the nights are most pleasant for sleeping. In case it is gets and stays hot, we have ceiling fans in some rooms, as well as standing fans for your use. In winter months, the roads are quickly and efficiently treated by the Town of Olive, and we have not had trouble getting up to the house, except in the midst of a 9" snowstorm which would have kept us homebound in NJ as well. If you are staying during winter months, we have a plow company who comes to plow you out of the driveway, and we do recommend that if you plan on staying long term, that your vehicle has four wheel drive, or front wheel drive at the very least. Our home is at the top of a long hill, which gets quickly treated with salt and sand and is plowed out fairly quickly after storms. The house is stocked with natural cleaning products, and we have shied away from using products with synthetic fragrances. Smoking is not allowed. The fireplace/flue in the living area is unfortunately NOT working. We provide battery operated candle for your use, to give the space a nice glow. (New masonry fireplace will be in sometime during 2024!)
We are interested in helping you have a relaxing experience, so if there is anything you need or would like us to provide that is not listed above, please do let us know! In addition, if you are an organization working toward bringing about peace and social justice for marginalized groups, ask us about working with you to make your stay more affordable for your staff members.

Came for Olive Day 2023. Terrific location. This lovely house is a little bit tired - but the times seeing friends at nearby Davis Park made it just a great stay. Thank you!

Lots of space to spread out. Fully equipped family home with full kitchen, cooking supplies, etc. It was wonderful to sit outside at night and look at the stars. It is in a small neighborhood but the other houses are not really visible. Do note that you'll need to drive 20 - 30 min to get to stores, restaurants, etc.

The home was spacious and roomy and allowed us to spend time together without feeling crowded. We played cards on the large deck before attending a wedding in the vicinity. We also took a hike in the woods.
We enjoyed the owners decor.

We rented this property for our annual non-profit organization's board retreat. We were looking for a quiet place to work through strategic planning and other details for the year. This property delivered providing bedrooms for all in attendance, a large dinner table to set all and multiple hang out spaces.
Our hostess was very attentive and responsive. The hot water heater turned off during our visit and was quickly fixed with a repair person taking care of the system within hours of the issue.

This house was beautiful, well stocked and spacious. I had a fantastic time celebrating my birthday with friends. We made good use of every part of the house, and the floor nook bedroom turned out to be a popular spot. Would recommend.

We loved the area of the Ashokan Reservoir, with the available hiking and proximity to Woodstock. The house was cozy and comfortable for our family. The fire pit was a fun area. Just a little note that the TV in the basement didn't have Roku like the one on the main level, so the basement wasn't used much. Also, would have liked to have had propane available for the grill.

1. There are significant dust mites as my younger one suffered a lot from her allergies (She was put on medication)...I am deeply concerned and she is still suffering from that
2. Please clean the AC vents as they are health hazards
3. There is a foul smell there from the first-day bottom from the sink
4. Property was so beautiful, wish some landscape was done especially on the patio
5. Need more fans upstairs, get warm during nighttime
I don't want to sound rude but saw awesome feedback we left, but the suffering of my kid made me a little sad.

Great house for a family vacation
The house was wonderful for a family vacation with little ones. Loved the open floor plan and the cozy futon bed in the upstairs bedroom on the floor. The upstairs does get very warm so getting creative with the air flow to help the kids sleep was key and the outside was a bit overgrown around the deck and the grass was long so we didn’t spend any time outside. Luckily there was a fantastic playground down the street!

Wonderful house!
We had a great stay at Counting Stars. The house is very cute and has a lot of space which is what we love. It has a large deck and yard, fire pit, outdoor grill, wifi, and a few other amenities we were nicely surprised by, some of which we didn't get to use (games, hand sanitizers, air fresheners, a yoga mat, extra pillows and blankets, etc.). We had a few family members join us and it was nice to not feel crowded or on top of each other, especially with the weather not cooperating with us. We had alot of rain during our stay but were able to keep the windows open for air circulation without the rain going in. Thankfully we had a night where we could use the fire pit and try an outdoor yard game (which we brought). Our dogs were able to run and play frisbee as well. Note: the yard is not enclosed but they didn't stray off the property (initially the street being close by concerned me but once I got there I didn't even need to worry as no one really drives by). The location is nice and quiet - the only sound you hear is from a truck going up the street which was not often as it's really secluded (barely any cars driving up the street, we didn't even notice the neighbors). It's a short drive to a small grocery store or you can drive 20 mins to a Hannford supermarket where you can stock up for your stay. The Bread Alone bakery is very close, only about 10 mins drive. Meredith's Bakery is 20 mins away and has GF baked good (yay). The owner was really communicative if we needed anything but there's quite a lot of household supplies available. All you really need are your personal bathroom items, groceries and adult beverages (of course). Overall it was such a nice property to stay on.. we loved it.

Comfortable, Relaxing
We enjoyed our stay. Plenty of room for a crowd but still felt cozy for just the 3 of us. Wildlife was hiding but the neighbors' dog made an appearance one morning. Owner was generally responsive to our email questions/concerns. Thank you!

Great family retreat
Our extended family thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Nestled near the end of a valley road, it feels secluded, but still was near services and stores. Plenty of sleeping options and separate areas for different people to congregate. The property borders in public land, and there’s a nice hiking trail just outside the door. Check-in was seamless. We had one question of the owners and they were super responsive. We came in winter and want to return in the summer.

Welcoming
The house was great- a good size for our family gathering-lots of room for everyone.
We had snow showers so were not able to enjoy the outdoors, although some did the walk to the view and loved it.
The Costa Rica and Florida people did love the snow and the great changeable weather of the Catskills a different experience for them.
I am grateful for the welcoming space and it was a treat to work with the owners

Lovely & Cozy home!
We had a wonderful time staying in this home! It was our first attempt at a multi-family vacation and it was a success! The location was great as it was close to many trails that we wanted to hike but also equidistant from Phoenicia and Woodstock -- both were easy to drive to. We loved the little hike to the overlook from the property! The house itself was well stocked with everything we needed -- towels, blankets, books, pamphlets, cooking supplies. I would highly suggest this home -- we all loved it :)

Perfect Weekend Getaway
We had a terrific time at Counting Stars! So many beds, enough bathrooms, beautiful yard and loved the hike up to the lookout! It was a fabulous time meeting up with friends and so relaxing to hang out in the home without feeling crowded. Looking forward to booking this house again in the future!

Great stay at Counting Stars!
We had a lovely family holiday at Counting Stars! Jennifer and Chris were great hosts who communicated easily and frequently with us. There was plenty a room for the family to spread out and have their own space but a nice open floor plan for when we all were together. When the new fireplace is in it will be perfect! We had a beautiful white Christmas and the kids enjoyed sledding outside in the front yard. Close enough to Peekamoose and all of our favorite restaurants and shops in Woodstock!

Lovely place for family and kids to gather
We had a great stay in West Shokan. We had a big group, but never felt crowded. The large yard and basement were perfect spaces for our young kids to play, but it was the hike from the house that was everyone's favorite aspect of the house. The kitchen was well stocked, there were great books to read and games to play, a huge lego bin for the kids, and comfortable beds. We went hiking at Ashokan High Point trail, a 7 minute drive from the house, which was a lovely path along a river through woods. Thanks for the wonderful stay!

Great spot for a family getaway!
My siblings and I booked this home for a long weekend to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday, and it was just great. Plenty of room, even for our big crew (10 adults, a toddler, and a dog), beautiful walks and natural spots nearby, a great kitchen for cooking and sharing meals together, comfortable spaces for relaxing and enjoying each other's
company—it was just what we were looking for. Jennifer was a terrific and attentive host and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed.
Getting the whole group together is a rare and special occasion for us, and this spot helped make it a truly wonderful weekend.
(Don't miss the chance to walk up the private trail behind the house! It's a short, peaceful hike with beautiful views.)

Lots of rooms and beds! clean linens and towels provided
Pros:
- The home was comfy and cozy
- The drive to the property was fairly straight forward, we used google maps and had no problem at all.
- Don't forget to look up to the skies at night, you'll see many stars! It was really cool!
- Lots of bed and rooms
- Clean linens and towels provided!!! We love not having to bring blankets and sheets with us.
- Price per night is great for the amount of space we're getting
Cons:
- 1.5 bathroom, tough for a group of 9 since there's only 1 shower
- lots of instructions to read through from the owner, literally pages and pages...
- owner instructed not to use the AC
- basement felt damp and didn't smell pleasant
- charging cleaning fee but still having to remove the bed sheets prior to leaving (in my past experience that's usually done by the house keeper)
- charging damage protection and still charging a property deposit of $500 (in my past experience paying the damage protection means no need to pay a deposit)

We had a great time
Absolutely lovely home! Nice layout and charmingly decorated. We had three couples with four kids and were very comfortable. Common areas have a nice flow plus you can stick kids in the side living room or basement rec room if you need to ;) We also had a night of s'mores making at the fire pit, breakfast out on the porch, and there are lots of books and comfy chairs to read them in.
Place is about equidistant from Ellenville and Woodstock so we checked out both of those, also Vernooey Kill Falls and Peekamoose/Blue Hole. Sam's Point Preserve has my favorite hikes. There's also a quick private hike to a reservoir lookout from the house, great for sunrise coffee!
Jennifer spoke to me several times before we came to make sure we had what we needed, everything was great.

Beautiful, clean, and cozy!
We stayed at the house for a week in early summer, with our three kids under the age of 10, and fell in love with it. There is a great space for cooking, and an awesome deck to hang with the family over morning coffee, during meals, or from which to watch our kids explore. It is even spacious enough for all of us to lay down next to each other for star-gazing at night! The woods and wildlife and hikes on the property made it so easy to explore and hike- even with young kids, while the proximity to town made for easy outings.
The house was clean, the beds were comfortable, and it wa so convenient to not have to bring our own linens, etc. I also love the light the house gets! We will definitely be back!! Thank you.

Highly Recommend
We were extremely impressed with Counting Stars. First, the drive was super easy and very scenic from NJ/NYC area. Although the property is out there in the woods it's not so far removed that you feel isolated. And, even though you have neighbors nearby you feel like you have just enough privacy. It strikes a perfect balance for those who want to "get away" from it all, but not too far away from it all.
From the outside the home is deceivingly small, for on the inside it's quite large. The home itself was spacious yet cozy, clean and comfortable. It allows for you to spread out and be communal. The decor is whimsical and inviting. The home is nestled among the trees on all sides and the views from the rooms are stunning. We felt at home immediately. So much so the first thing we were inspired to do was take a nap. Celia on the oversized couch and me on the king size bed upstairs! The home comes equipped with every convenience-internet, dishwasher, washer/dryer. The kitchen was well stocked with the basics(spices, oils) which I thought was an especially nice touch as we love to cook, but didn't want to have to bring our own spices etc. We loved spreading out and cooking meals in the very functional kitchen. We thoroughly enjoyed dining indoors in the dining room and out on the beautiful front deck under sun, moon and stars. The beds were comfortable and the tub in the upstairs bathroom was definitely a plus! I made sure to get a soak in.
The location is ideal as it is a stone's throw away from so many attractions, namely lots of trails, Woodstock, Tinker Tubing and the Ashokan Reservoir. Walking the Ashokan Promenade at sunset is like walking between heaven and earth. The view is breathtaking with the silhouettes of the soft rolling Catskill mountains as the backdrop beneath a watercolor sky of pastels. Mists rise from the valley and roll over the bridge onto the reservoir to make for a truly mystical, otherworldly experience. The gentle cross hatch ripples of the reservoir soothe your senses and heal your soul. And across from all that beauty extends the Esopus Creek down below in the Valley. On our last day we were graced with seeing an Eagle fly over head to bless our stay and send us on our way rejuvenated and full of gratitude.
Overall, Counting Stars gave us what we came for, a place to release, relax and replenish! Thank you Jaye and Chris for your hospitality!

Peaceful and Spacious - VERY HOSPITABLE owner
Three of my college roommates and I, along with our seven children (ages 7 months - 5 years old), gathered here to catch up as this was a mid-way meeting point for all of us to drive to. We absolutely loved our time here. The house was decorated very uniquely and made us feel at home. The layout allowed everyone to have private sleeping quarters and enough room to all gather for meals and games. The hike up the back of the house led to a gorgeous lookout and was easy enough for all of the kids to walk most of the way; the two year-olds needed to be carried the last part on the way down. There was a kiddie pool for the kids to splash around in and a fire pit for us to roast marshmallows and make smores. We were so thankful to have had this space to gather and make memories together with our families. The owner was very responsive and accommodating to our needs and questions regarding our stay. I would highly recommend this home for a peaceful, quiet getaway!

YES YES and YES
I got to spend my 40th birthday with my boo at this magnificent find in the woods. In true New Yorker fashion, we had every intention of spending the weekend busily hiking and sightseeing in the region, but ended up staying in or around the property the entire weekend. It's like we couldn't bring ourselves to leave the homestead - everything we really wanted was right there. We would wake up to a dazzling sunrise brightening the house through one set of windows and wind down for the night with the sunset blazing into the other. We meandered the forest behind the property mushroom hunting along the path to the top boasting a magnificent view of the Shokan reservoir. We dangling in a hammock among the birch trees or lounged in the armchairs gawking at the view or dozing with a book. We made a feast in the big open kitchen and ate it on the breezy veranda to the wonderful buzz of all things living and singing.
This home is a great find in a fabulous location and belongs to a wonderful couple who were a pleasure to communicate with throughout the booking process. This is a gem, folks. Hands down.
Suggestion:
I would highly recommend breakfast at a sweet new spot just minutes away called Marty's - get the Lumberjack. Trust me.
