About this house rental

Our 300-year old village home offers a large, multi-level, secluded garden and small pool next to a 17th century chapel with a spectacular view of the Luberon national park. Located in Menerbes itself, you have all the conveniences of village shops while located on a quiet street. You can park your car and walk everywhere.

The house is located on the southern flank of the perched village of Menerbes, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Peter Mayle's “A Year in Provence” is set in Menerbes where he lived for many years.

Eating outdoors in summer is a French tradition and we have three lovely areas set up with tables and chairs. Enjoy breakfast with fresh bread and local fruit on the veranda, just off the kitchen, with a spectacular view of the Luberon while you read the local paper and International New York Times. Lunch and dinner are eaten under the grapevine - from here, the view towards the Luberon is framed by green leaves and grapes (depending on the season) and the view is like an Impressionist painting. An afternoon snack can be had on the lower garden next to the pool on an antique iron café table and chairs. After an evening walk, you can drink herbal tea with verbena from the garden and watch the colors change on the mountain with the setting sun or gaze at the stars.

Menerbes is a short drive from weekly markets in Apt and Cavaillon, the ochre hills of Roussillon, the Abbaye de Senanque, Fontaine de Vaucluse and other perched villages such as Gordes, Bonnieux and Oppede-le-Vieux. A 45-minute drive brings you to Avignon with the Palais de Papes, museums and lively cultural festivities. A 60-minute drive along back roads and vineyards brings you to Aix-en-Provence.

Our extensively renovated house is 105 square meters on three floors, located in a quiet area of the village where tourists tend not to venture. Just up the street is the baker (where you can smell baguettes baking), and just beyond, a grocery store with a large selection of local produce, local wineshop, cafes, ice cream shops and a choice of 5 restaurants. Another street brings you to the Truffle and Wine museum where you can taste and buy local wine.

Our house is an authentic 'maison de village and; our family has lived in Menerbes for generations. The first floor has a cozy living room with traditional Provencal floor tiles, a comfortable couch, day bed and reading chair, and antique chairs. This leads to a fully equipped kitchen with hand-made tiles and a table seating six. The veranda - with a spectacular view just off the kitchen, has a table seating 6-8, and two lounge chairs to the side. Also on the first floor is a full bathroom with clawfoot tub, shower, toilet and sink and another half bathroom with toilet and sink.

Three bedrooms are located on the second floor with old, beautiful terra cotta tiles. The main bedroom with a new (summer 2024) king size bed (180 X 200 cm) has an en suite bathroom with toilet, sink and walk-in shower, a French window with a spectacular view of the Luberon with a double bed, traditional Provencal chair and antique country furniture. The second bedroom has a queen size bed and one twin bed, drawers & desk, and the third bedroom has a queen size bed, a set of drawers and a desk.

The third floor is a large family room with a beamed ceiling and parquet floor. It can be used as a 4th bedroom for guests as it has an antique sleigh bed and drawers. Four windows include two skylights making it wonderfully light with a picture-postcard view of the village castle. This room has a new flat screen TV for streaming programs from internet, a CD player, desk and shelves full of books in French and English. The sofa and confortable chair is a perfect place to relax, watch TV or play games if you have the very unlikely chance to have a rain day during your visit.

The house has been repainted in ochre colors “patine a l’ancienne” and is furnished with antique furniture. All beds have Provencal quilts (boutis.) Other furnishings include tribal and oriental rugs, Indian screens, African masks, Somali chests, antique African cloth and original paintings from Haiti.

The garden is on two levels. Steps from the kitchen veranda lead down to the terrace shaded in grapevines with a table for 6-8. Just beyond is another terrace adjacent to the old stone wall of the Chapelle. Stone steps lead down to the lower garden which has a grassy area, antique café table and four chairs and small pool and deck. The pool deck is shaded by a large sun umbrella with four lounge chairs. This garden space is a haven of peace, and surprisingly private with spectacular views of the Luberon.

The house is available for limited dates between May and September. You will find everything you need including sheets, towels, linens, dishes, cutlery, and kitchen equipment. The house has wireless internet. Our efficient and responsive concierge will meet you upon arrival (guests rave about her!). Guests also appreciate our notebook crammed with information – importantly for our favorite hikes around Menerbes.

This is a “real home” used by our family and French relatives – not a vacation rental property so the house and garden have some rustic, bohemian edges. We love the old stones! Located on the edge of a perched village, the house and garden is built on several levels with multiple uneven stairs. Only the first floor is fully handicapped accessible from the street (except for the bat tub). The living room has a day bed, living room kitchen and terrasse are on same level with only one low step at the front door. Other areas of the house and garden are accessible through stairs. The house size is perfect for a family of 4-5 or three couples. Single couples have also enjoyed renting.

A few comments from past renters: “The house was so lovely, full of character and the view very breathtaking.” “The village location was just perfect and the garden surprisingly secluded.” “We went to the coast to meet friends, but there was no comparison – we wished we had stayed in Menerbes instead.” "The house is magical!"

The house was a lovely traditional property in an ideal location: the garden was amazing and we loved sitting out every evening and enjoying the sunset and view. Jean Marie was a great host and I loved that he sent all the local events happening during the duration of our stay.

We are a group of 5 friends who stayed at Jean-Marie’s house in Ménèrbes. It is a fun place to be, with gorgeous terraces and a pool. The ground floor is the living room (with a day bed), the kitchen, and 1 bathroom and an extra toilet. Upstairs are 3 double bedrooms (one has a twin bed, also). One of the bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom. The former attic has been turned into a two-tiered bedroom, with a sitting area, double bed, and single bed. The kitchen is well-appointed, there’s a washing machine and dishwasher, and parking is available on the street. We loved it!!!

We looked at many properties before we settled on this one! We wanted a house that was true to it's setting not modernized to the point there was no longer any character. The upgrades made to this house were well thought out and kept the house true to its original design. This house exceeded our expectations. We immediately felt at home when we walked in. It was the perfect place to spend time celebrating our 70th and 80th birthdays. The obvious love and attention to detail given to this house only adds to it's charm. The location was perfect! In no time we adapted to the rhythm of the Village. I did not expect to cook but the kitchen was so well equipped and the view from the terrace too good to waste! We went to the local Market on Thursdays, explored the Village, ate and drank wine at the many venues that the were right there. We never rented a car, we did hire a guide from "Provence is Calling" and went on two day trips. After 3 weeks I don't think we even scratched the surface of what Menerbes has to offer! We spent time after leisurely lunches floating and reading by the pool then off we would go for another wonderful dinner and then wine at the bistros, people watch and head back to our terrace for the beautiful sunsets! It is exactly what we wanted. We are already planning a trip back to this house next year! Our Host and his assistant were always there if and when we needed them. I can't say enough good about this place! We absolutely fell in love with it!

Which terrace for lunch? Straight out from the kitchen to enjoy the wonderful view across to the Luberon hills, or next level down under the productive grapevine, or down another set of stairs to the small table under the amazing pine tree. Such minor existential questions occupied our minds for the nearly 3 weeks we spent at Jean Marie’s house in Ménerbes. Such a charming family home to enjoy, and from which to explore the multiple delights in the region. While a tourist destination, somehow Ménerbes - at least in the time we were there - seems to avoid the awful tourist overrun of other attractive neighbouring towns such as Roussillon and Lacoste. We went to accomplished classical concerts in Château de Lourmarin, weekday markets that ranged from small size with local farmers selling their own produce to the amazing cornucopia that is the market at L’isle sur la Sorgue, to brilliant sculpture at Château La Coste, and to wonderful hikes in the cedar forests and elsewhere in the beautiful environs of Ménerbes. A true richness of experience. All of this while staying in such a delightful home that we were so happy to return to each day, hopping into the small pool to cool off and unwind. The house reflects lives well travelled with interesting and clearly much loved furniture, artefacts and an ambience that we enjoyed and much appreciated. Thank you Jean Marie for sharing your home, we loved every moment of it.

A really nice traditionally furnished house in a nice location, although as a village house be prepared for going up and down stairs a fair bit. The house is well equipped and the owner is welcoming and helpful. The views from the property are beautiful and it is a very peaceful place to stay with plenty to do locally.

Jean-Marie's home was absolutely perfect for my family and young son. The house is wonderfully equipped and charming - lots of cooking supplies, children's toys and books, etc. We loved cooking in the classic kitchen and eating dinner on the terrace, overlooking the mountains, and lunches under the vineyard. We spent many days lounging by the pool and Jean-Marie also provided so many great visits in the surrounding area (lots to see and do!) and we did them all. We were also happy to just explore the village, Menerbes, which is one of the most beautiful villages I have ever seen. By the end of our 3 week stay, we really knew all the people in town and loved the bistro and its beautiful view. Seeing the local lavender field in full bloom was also very special (it's just at the foot of the village). I hope to come back to Jean-Marie's home again in the future. He was such a gracious host and so helpful for anything we needed. We even extended our stay by a week - it's hard to leave this place!

We really enjoyed our stay at Jean-Marie's house. It's a beautiful and charming home, and the location could not have been more perfect. The town is beyond beautiful, but it's not overrun by tourists. We can pretty much find everything we need within walking distance - three bakeries, a grocery store, a few very good restaurants (there is one Michelin-starred restaurant), cafes, pizzeria, a few boutique, etc. Literally everything within 5 minutes walk. There is also Aldi and Super U (bigger grocery store/supermarket) in the nearby town (Coustellet - 10 minutes drive). The house itself is very beautiful with gorgeous views. We enjoyed (almost) every meals in the back porch right outside of the kitchen - the view of the Luberon park is so beautiful from here. We also enjoyed the swimming pool a lot. There are a couple other outdoor dining areas in the backyard that you can use. The house has three floors, with the living room, kitchen, 1.5 bathroom and laundry room in the first floor, 3 bedroom in the 2nd floor, and another living/play/rest area in the 3rd floor (only this one has AC). Although the 1st and 2nd floor do not have AC, the room feels cool enough that we never feel the need to go up to the 3rd floor to cool down (we were there in late June). Jean-Marie is one of the best hosts we've ever had (we are frequent travelers and have used many rental properties all around the world). There were very nice welcome presents in the kitchen when we arrived - a bottle of wine, a fresh baguette, butter and some delicious goat cheese. Jean-Marie responded quickly to all our questions, and was always very helpful. There was a construction going on which had led to a few issues, but Jean-Marie quickly addressed all the issues and made sure that we can be as comfortable as possible. He was also extremely flexible with the checkout time, which we greatly appreciated. We did a few trips to nearby villages/towns (Gordes, Rousillon, Lacoste, Apt, and Avignon), and we felt that Menerbes was definitely our favorite place (to stay). We spent a week there, and we wish we had stayed longer. It's a very beautiful and peaceful place. If we go to Luberon again, we will definitely stay in Jean-Marie's house again.
