About this house rental
Shizunami means quiet waves and just a few minutes stroll takes you to the secluded shores of Barragoot Lake home to hundreds of black swans...perfect for watching the sunset. Relax on the deck watching the mother wallabies care for their baby joeys...enjoy the surrounds of the Japanese inspired garden set amongst the bush. The property was inspired by traditional buildings in the Hokuriku region of Japan and has a genkan -a typical Japanese entrance which overlooks an interior courtyard. The interior is crisp white with large expansive windows which bring the outdoors in. Shizen meaning natural is the theme of the property and the sound of nature abounds.

This is the most lovely and certainly the most beautiful house we’ve ever had the pleasure of renting.

We had a lovely time. Sadly we neglected to write in the visitors’ book- so Kathleen, thank you for your kind response to our questions… and your food tips! Susan and Tony

We had a very pleasant time at Shizunami.

We had a very relaxing stay in the tranquil setting, surrounded by lots of birds, Kangeroos and Wallabies. Close enough to town and beaches.

We booked for 8 nights with the understanding that the property is located 5min walk to the beach, has a kitchen with a refrigerator and good internet. We were disappointed to find out that Shizunami is in fact situated in an isolated location in a bush land. The only access in and out is on a rough, bumpy dirt track which is difficult for a low car. Kitchen has no hot plate or oven and only a small bar fridge which is inadequate for 8 nights stay. Also there is virtually no phone coverage and weak WiFi. We made the owner aware of the issues, but she was rude and unhelpful.

We searched property and found key for adjacent house which we now realise was probably used by owners when on site and not set up for us visitors, hence further comment may be inappropriate about state of property but we made most of opportunity and appreciated the remote location with abundance of wildlife but would have appreciated correct (North) house as it would be better prepared and better equipped (BBQ etc.) for our visit.

Absolutely loved our stay. Despite the rain, we had a beautiful time in the beautiful surroundings. Puzzles, wildlife, walks, relaxing, the sky, stars and air. The aesthetic design of the house was perfect and suited our needs. Kathleen was friendly and very accomodating, we didn’t want to leave. Who knows, maybe we will be neighbours some time in the future? Highly recommend!

Serenity and seclusion
Delightful property in a secluded location, close to Bermagui. Restful, thoughtful, tasteful. Spacious rooms, comfortable furnishings. Loses half a star for limited kitchen resources (no hot plate, bar fridge only) and weak wi-fi, which is fine for a brief stay, but more of an issue with the 3-night minimum. Nevertheless we hope to be back!

Clean and peaceful!
Very happy with it. Very lucky that we didn't bring a sports sedan as I wouldn't have been comfortable bringing it up the driveway. Wifi code provided didn't work (which worked out really well for us). Loved the Maples and the Wallabies.

Restful interlude.
Peaceful and beautifully positioned amongst a combination of natural bushland and Japanese botanical influences.

Peaceful location
A wonderful peaceful cottage in the bush land.
Needs a bit of general and kitchen ammenities maintenance. Couldn’t get any phone coverage or guest wifi to work with given access codes.
Access could prove tricky with a low car or with significant rainfall.

5 star peace & tranquility
Peaceful Japanese inspired immersion in the Australian coastal bush. Spacious and relaxing, all that we needed for a special treat. PS : it is very private and no need to communicate with hosts as directions were very clear.

Tranquility galore
This was the second time we stayed at Shizunami and I hope it won't be the last. This place is so peaceful, surrounded by beautiful trees, birdlife and kangaroos, with the gentle sound of the waves a constant companion. On a clear night the stars are great too. The house is beautiful - simple, comfortable, and with some exquisite Japanese furniture. If you are after peace and quiet, surrounded by nature, you can't go wrong. It's even beautiful when it rains!

This property has such lovely ambiance!
A truly unique experience that allows you to unwind and enjoy all that nature has to offer. A place to switch off away from your devices and technology. It was so lovely to hear the beautiful nature all around us.

Shizunami was exactly as they said it would be, quiet and peaceful. We had a lovely stay and would certainly return.
Thank you

Peaceful Retreat in a Japanese garden
This is our second stay and it was again the most relaxing place to be. While the weather was less than desirable for a beach holiday, the house is itself a retreat and it’s environment even more beautiful in the rain. For those whose interest is reading, writing and drawing it is perfect- but not for those practicing to be the next master chef. A restorative stay. Highly recommended. With thanks C & Z

Tranquility
A lovely get away set amongst the trees off the beaten track not too far from Bermagui.
Spacious rooms and nice and clean.
Wifi was pretty disappointing- virtually no coverage in the house except outside the bathroom where limited coverage could be maintained.
Also there is virtually no mobile coverage on Telstra and none on Optus.
A small fridge freezer to store some food. No oven - just a Webber bbq. Somehow we didn’t realise this when we booked but managed fine.
A peace filled get away. Worth a try.

Peaceful hideaway
Delightful Japanese style accommodation - clean, thoughtfully furnished, quiet and set in tastefully planted garden. Simple, practical, modern furnishings with all necessary accessories provided. Well off beaten track on dirt road but no problem with access. Altogether wonderful.

My fiancé and I really enjoyed our stay at Kathleen’s property. The grounds of the house were magical, filled with colourful birds and butterflies- the Japanese garden was so gorgeous. The house interior was majestic yet at the same time cosy- the king sized bed was super comfortable. Plenty of storage for guests. Bathtub in the bathroom amazing for an epsom salt bath. One of the highlights about staying was meeting Sophie- Kathleen’s super friendly dog. Kathleen was wonderful to communicate with and very flexible with our requests during our stay. I highly recommend staying at this property!

Absolute relaxation in a beautiful location
The house is exquisite and surrounded by forest with the lake five minutes walk away. It is beautifully furnished and absolutely clean. Sitting on the deck reading a book, watching the wallabies or staring at the stars was an absolute tonic. Thanks Kathleen for a gorgeous visit. We will be back.

Quiet, Japanese style, bush setting
Lovely bush setting, very quiet with Japanese inspired architecture and style. Great for a quiet retreat and only a five minute drive to Bermagui. Be aware it is a dirt track to the property that is more suited to a 4wd than a sedan although all vehicles will negotiate the track without a problem. Also it is a hot house with no air conditioning or fans so I’d recommend staying outside of the summer period when it will be lovely. It does have heating and is East oriented so I doubt winter will be a problem.

6 adults and the dog all enjoyed the stay
Great location and beautiful house which was well styled. It does need to be a little more practical for 6 adults to stay and the bed configuration didnt work , the fridge very small and there is no stove. A broom snd mop would have assisted to keep the place clean also. Great stay though

Not just accomodation but also a beautiful experience
This beautiful Japanese inspired bungalow hidden between forest and just a short drive to Bermagui, is a well thought out property with attention to detail that provides not only accomodation but a experience. Privacy was provided by a luscious screen of bamboo, the property was clean and we thoroughly enjoyed cooking using the Webber out on the deck amongst the scenery with the company of kookaburras and sounds of the ocean.

Tranquil Japanese setting in the bush
We thoroughly enjoyed our very relaxing stay at Shizunami where the Australian bush is coupled with an idyllic Japanese inspired hideaway. The house and garden is beautifully arranged with kangaroos and wallabies making regular visits. As stated cooking facilities are minimal but there are plenty of options for eating out and the electric fryer, microwave and barbecue aren't too limiting. We did find the property manual a bit out of date on dining venues and there was no mention of options for laundering clothes (no washer or dryer). While accepting the property normally discourages children, as a family of five we found the lack of laundry facilities challenging. There is a laundromat at the caravan park in town but we had a mixed experience - on the first occasion we were welcomed but on the second occasion (with different staff) we were not. The option of handwashing at the property is hardly ergonomic (bathtub). All in all we had a very comfortable stay and would thoroughly recommend to anyone seeking a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle so long as they were prepared to deal with the minor limitations. Our kids and our dog absolutely loved it!

Beautiful house, spacious rooms and lovely big windows
Nice bush experience in aesthetically pleasing house with charming Japanese touches and beautiful furniture. Limited cooking equipment and devices may prove a challenge for some. Right next door to family home, though privacy was assured. Rooster crow close by was something we enjoyed. We enjoyed a walk to the near by lake and around to the ocean and saw a grazing wallaby out our bedroom window.
