About this house rental
There is a 30 Day Minimum Rental is Required for this property. Hale Kohola, “The House of the Whale” is situated on 3 acres in an ideal location on the Kohala Coast, with panoramic views of the ocean and coastline. The master bedroom has a stunning ocean view that you can enjoy by just lifting your head off the pillow. If you are looking for a clean, quiet, spacious place to relax with friends or family, or a home base for day trips or ocean activities at nearby Kawaihae and area beaches, this is the one.
Furthermore, the home is now solar powered and includes an A/C unit in the living room.
This 3 bedroom / 3 bath home sleeps six, including the “ohana” studio with futon sofa-bed, which is connected by walkway to the main house (perfect for a family member who craves their own space). The open floor plan allows privacy for the bedrooms, which are separated by the living areas.
The well-equipped kitchen is well planned for socializing and looking at the ocean while you prepare meals. Enjoy your morning coffee or watch the sun go down from the wrap-around lanai. The elusive “green flash” at sunset has been seen countless times from here. The dark night sky is incredible for gazing at the stars and planets. The quiet neighborhood is a perfect place for a morning jog or walk. There’s even a ukulele to play.
Hale Kohola is a rare find for privacy, beauty, natural quiet and Island Living. Guests are welcome to pick limes, tangerines or bananas on the property, (in season) and enjoy the fragrant plumeria and Tahitian gardenias. The landscaping focuses on species native to Hawaii, including a few endangered species.
During humpback whale season (November thru April) the spouts and breaches of these massive animals are visible from the house. The owners make their home in a small town in Alaska, spending part of the winter on the Big Island enjoying the local foods, culture and ocean and doing whale and dolphin research with the non-profit Hawai'i Marine Mammal Consortium.
Fully equipped; comfortable and clean, you will find Hale Kohola to be the perfect retreat for your dream vacation in Hawaii.

Love the view
We spent hours on the lanai looking at the view. Great location and more than enough room for the two of us.

Lovely spot!
A light and breezy home in a quiet area with gorgeous views over the ocean and easy access to great beaches and both Waimea and Hawi.
We had a great time waking up to views of the ocean from bed each morning and watching sunset from the lanai each evening. The house had everything we needed, including extra water bottles to borrow and reclining chairs that were perfect for star gazing. (The stars are amazing!)
It was just a great, great place to come home to at the end of the day.
The house could use a few more teaspoons. :-) (There were only two.) But this is a very minor thing that affected us not at all. (There were lots of soup spoons.)
A lovely spot!

Nice property — but it is a 2 bed/2 bath
We really enjoyed our stay. As two parents with a newborn, we had plenty of space and a beautiful view. Kohala is truly the best part of the island.
The main house is very nice. The kitchen is well stocked and the rooms and bathrooms are great.
I am giving it five stars because it worked for us. However, I agree with other reviewers that it is very misleading to say this sleeps six. It is a two bed, two bath house. The garage has a tiny room with the washer/dryer, a bathroom, and a futon. No one would want to sleep there. If I came expecting three rooms to sleep six, I would have been let down by the third room.

The view the view the view.....amazing
This is a lovely house. We lived on the lanai with a panoramic view . The kitchen is well appointed and a great place to cook. This area of Kohala is rather remote. We were here for a wedding in Hawi. We were near Hapuna beach rated one of the top beaches in the world. There was also Waialea Beach which is unknown except by locals and it is really great for snorkeling. The house has a lot of beach equipment. Which made going to the beach a pleasure. The little towns of Hawi and Kapaau up the mountain is like you have stepped back in time. The master bedroom has the view of sunrise and sunset quite a way to wake in the morning. Be aware that there is no A/C. This normally isn't a problem up here as there are trade winds but August did get a little hot in the house cooking. We would go out to the lanai and the cool breeze cooled us down. I must also highly recommend Flumin da ditch this is an experience that I have not seen any where in the world. A true once in a lifetime experience. This was a great vacation and we made some wonderful memories.

Nice
Hale Kohala is a quiet, clean and spacious house with a splendid view to the ocean. We enjoyed our stay. You need a car because there is nothing around this place. The next bigger grocery you find around 13 miles away. Therefore it is place for people who like to relax.

Rooms with a view (apart from the "ohana")
OK, the public rooms are pleasant enough and the 180 degree views across the landscape are ravishing but this is hardly a 3 bedroom property. The "ohana studio" is indeed connected to the main house by a walkway - you access it past the detritus piled up in the garage and it shares space with the laundry. Two proper bedrooms and a lash-up in the garage would be more accurate.
As the property is supposed to be available to a group of 6, it would be nice to have a matched set of 6 of all the main dining essentials such as plates (unchipped) and wine glasses, never mind a table large enough to seat 6 (apart from outside).
It may well sit in a 3 acre plot but bear in mind that most of it is scrub/desolation so if you are with kids, you won't be playing football or cricket.
If your group is 2 mature couples who just want to drink in the views and use this as a base for exploration, then I wouldn't hesitate to book this property.

Nice Place with Some Issues
Bright and open home, quiet and with good, long-distance views of the ocean and coastline, nice lanai and great sunsets. The fresh limes and tangerines on the surrounding trees were tasty. Good location - short drive to the local town and beaches. A couple of issues, however: advertised (and priced) as a 3 bedroom home but the third bedroom, described as "the Ohana studio" is actually a walled-off laundry room (with a futon in it), located in the garage - it's tiny and complete with unpleasant smells and atmosphere from the concrete floor and the car parked in there. The house was well stocked but overall not very clean. The three acre property is completely overgrown, there is no play area for young kids except for the small gravel areas on either side of the house, and the only walking is on the steep, hilly road around the property, not really suitable for seniors. Overall a nice place in a good location, most suitable for 4 adults, but be aware that the upbeat descriptions of some of the details on the website are a bit misleading.

home away from home
This house provided a perfect home setting for our family of five adults to spend a week together in Hawaii ! The parents claimed the lovely master room with King size bed to wake to the sounds of a variety of birds while watching the view of the ocean appear with the sun and then the sunset in the evening. Meanwhile, the fully tiled, clean and open home gave the 3 adult siblings their own space to claim with shared bathroom. We purchased food ( Costco and local markets) and prepared our own meals together finding everything we could need for equipment ( blender, pots, fry pans, coffee pot, cutting boards, mixing and serving bowls, etc) , utensils (cutting knives, tableware, measure cups, can opener, etc), and cleaning ( dishwasher available but we usually hand washed). We went out on adventures daily in our rental van to snorkel , hike, photograph sunrises/sunsets, or shop. This was a great place to relax yet feel connected , both for the individuals in the house and as visitors to the island - with privacy yet access to any activity . We all agreed we would love to stay another week (or more) again at this location. Mahalo !

Perfect stay
Besides being a beautiful house in a great location, it was thoughtfully and generously equipped beyond the necessities, from saran wrap to children's books and snorkeling equipment.
There is a wonderful view to the ocean from the bedroom when waking up and the outdoor table makes for relaxing and scenic meals. The quiet during the night and the clarity of the stars is unique.
Highly recommend to those looking for a quiet and beautiful place.

All we were looking for
We have spent many vacations in Kohala Estates and can unconditionally recommend this house rental. Minutes from the best Big Island beaches, with enough food shopping options that you can avoid Kona town. And did I say this place was QUIET? All you here are the birds chirping in the morning and evening. The house, which must be fairly new, was both clean and well appointed, with a good, firm bed in the master bedroom. Highly Recommended!

Perfect house / amazing views
We have rented several vacation rentals on the Big Island over the years and we whole-heartedly recommend this house. The house has by far the best possible view. You basically have a 180+ degree view of the entire west coast and out to the horizon as far as the eye can see. It is very restful and peaceful to just sit outside and watch sailboats sail by, and tankers coming in or leaving and boats going out to fish. You have the view from the kitchen and the master bedroom as well. Out the other side of the house, you look up on Kahola Mountain and you can see Mauna Kea (and the observatories) off in the distance. The house was very clean. It has plenty of windows that you can open to bring in the island breezes. The two main bedrooms are very spacious, each with their own bathroom. There is also a third bed (a futon) and bathroom out by the laundry room. Before our visit we were a little concerned about if the kitchen would be well-stocked. It turned out to be just about what anyone would need. There were plenty of pans and dishes, counter space, spices and other kitchen supplies. We love to cook and had no problems. There is fast wireless internet, TV with satellite / dvd player and some movies. Another thing that we really liked was the location. The neighborhood (Kahola Estates) is nice for taking walks. The small town of Kawaihae is only a couple of miles away. It has a small market for essentials, a place to buy fresh fish (Da Fish House) and a good place for burgers (Kohala Burger and Taco). The beach at the Mauna Kea resort and Mau’umae beach are about 10-15 minutes away. Spencer Beach Park is a little closer. Waimea and Hawi are also close by with good restaurants, farmers markets, and shops. One other thing that we really enjoyed was the local books that were on the bookshelf in the living room. They really gave you the feel of the local flavor and some insight into the history and culture. We highly recommend this rental house and don’t think that anyone could be disappointed in it. ENJOY!

Breathtaking Pacific View
We spent a week at this beautiful clean house with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. Went to bed after a beautiful sunset and woke up to a view from the master bedroom followed by coffee in the lanai with the same gorgeous view. Well equipped kitchen including outdoor grill with grocery stores 20-25 minutes away and restaurants within 5 minutes. The house is 15 minutes from Hapuna Beach for swimming and other Kohala beaches for swimming and snorkeling. It was a perfect central location for trips to Hilo, Volcano Nat'l Park, Mauna Kea (all by the well-paved and nearby Saddle Road), Hawi and the black sand beach, Waimea, and Kona-Kailua. We are a family with teenagers so the house offered a lot of privacy...but the view and the location would be perfect for a romantic getaway or girls getaway as well. Kitchen is perfect with young kids and adventure seekers will find the location provides convenient access for hiking, biking, and snorkeling. Washer and dryer made it nice not to come home with a big bag of laundry. Also, the house has so many big windows that with the mountain breezes the nights were cool and comfortable for sleeping even in July. The shaded lanai made afternoon lounging very comfortable as well. If you want a resort quality view and a beautifully decorated 3 bedroom house in a central location without the hustle and bustle of a resort....this is the place to rent!!

INCREDIBLY SERENE AND BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY!
I was fortunate to attend a women's retreat at this home. There were only two of us staying in the home, yet we hosted a dozen other women during the day for spiritual gatherings. The house is so clean and beautiful, with panoramic views of the coastline. We could see Maui from the lanai! At night the stars were exquisitely beautiful, viewing the Milky Way and shooting stars was an added treat. This is truly a fantastic value! Close to the beaches and restaurants and various ocean activities! I highly recommend it!
