About this cottage rental
The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain is an historic guest ranch situated outside the charming village of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County. Located on the slope of Sonoma Mountain with breathtaking views of the valley, the Ranch is unlike any other vacation rental in Sonoma, combining luxury accommodations with a farm stay experience. The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain is an ideal vacation destination for families or anyone interested in wine country living as it has been experienced by California families for over a century.
At the Ranch you have the opportunity to relax in 'the Cottage', a luxury, private 3-bedroom home with private wooden hot tub while enjoying all the Ranch has to offer, including a salt water pool with panoramic valley views, seasonal organic vegetable garden, orchard, blackberry and strawberry patches, chicken coop and more.
The Cottage at The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain was built in 1898 as the primary guest quarters for the popular Bruning's Summer Resort from the late 1800s to 1915. The Cottage is situated at the end of a private drive on twelve acres of rolling hills studded with oak trees, vineyard and orchards. Recently remodeled (with upgraded HVAC) and professionally decorated in a comfortable agrarian chic style, the Cottage has an open and bright floor plan, gourmet kitchen with Viking Range, three bedrooms (including an old-fashioned sleeping loft), and two full baths. Please note, the Cottage is a vintage, 120+ year old home located in an agrarian setting and is best suited for guests who enjoy indoor/outdoor living.
The Ranch is conveniently located approximately one and a half hours from San Francisco and is accessible from downtown Glen Ellen as well as from Highway 101 via Rohnert Park or Santa Rosa.
A Day at The Ranch on Sonoma Mountain:
In the morning, sip your coffee or tea outdoors while enjoying the abundant wildlife including rabbits, wild turkeys, quail and more. For breakfast, collect you own fresh eggs from our pasture raised chickens, pick wild blackberries and gather seasonal fruit from our orchard.
In the afternoon, grab some towels, pack some cold drinks in the red wagon and follow the gravel path to the pool. While you splash and play, enjoy panoramic views of the valley. On your way back to the cottage, gather pick fresh seasonal fruit for your dessert (blackberries, figs, French plums and rhubarb grow along the path).
In the evening, enjoy a glass of wine on our view deck or take a stroll up Sonoma Mountain Road and enjoy the many vineyards that surround us. For dinner, snip baby lettuce, pick heirloom tomatoes off the vine and gather other fresh vegetables and herbs from our abundant organic garden. Enjoy the sunset as you dine outdoors on our generous deck overlooking Sonoma Valley. Later, gather around the outdoor fire pit for marshmallow roasting. My family and I had a fabulous last summer hurrah at the Ranch! The views around the house of the Sonoma Valley are breathtaking! The house is stocked with all the essentials that you need to cook or grill. The kids enjoyed chatting with the chickens each day and appreciated the fresh eggs for breakfast. The best part of the weekend was obviously time spent at the pool. Picking/eating the fresh blackberries along the walk to the pool was also a plus! We can't wait to come back next year!

The house is one of the best stocked homes I've ever stayed in..spices/herbs, flours, sugars..just made me want to cook. The porches and hot tub give views of the Sonoma valley, sunrise and sunset. The pool is across the property but this time of year it gives you a chance to eat blackberries on the way and look at the fresh vegetable garden to plan for dinner. The other side of the house has plug and peach trees for the picking. The caretakers are warm and helpful with any issues. I loved it so much I'm returning with my daughter and family and can't wait to see the grandkids watching the chickens and picking veggies. I think this time I'll make blackberry sorbet in the wonderful ice cream maker.

This was a beautiful, extremely well appointed property. The garden was a wonderful place to find fresh produce, our toddler loved visiting the chickens for fresh eggs every morning, we loved that it was dog friendly and the pool was very welcome on a hot day. The owner and caretakers were extremely helpful and friendly. We will certainly be back!

This is a gorgeous, secluded property with stunning views from the deck. The cottage was immaculate and beautifully furnished. We would definitely return for a relaxing stay in Sonoma wine country!

Myself and friends came out from Canada for a "girls" weekend of wine tasting and connection and we couldn't have found a more magical and gorgeous place.
The place was clean, kitchen was a dream to work in, beds were super comfortable, and the view/access to nature can't be beat.
Communication and check in was easy. Can't recommend enough.

Wonderful trip with family & friends. Despite some surprising May weather (rain, 50/60s) we all had a great time. Lots of indoor games and books for adults and kids alike; plenty of space for two families of four to spread out; close enough to Glen Ellen and Kenwood to visit restaurants and wineries. The kids LOVED the zip line, trampoline, chickens and kids space (esp under the stair landing). Morton's warm springs public swimming pool was a great alternative for a colder day (pools were 90degrees). Only caution is mosquitos at dusk (though of the 8 of us I was the only one to get bit several times). We would love to come back!

We had a great weekend stay. Loved picking fruit and veggies from the garden and relaxing in the hot tub. Gorgeous views! There was an issue with the septic system (someone before us had flushed wipes--don't do that!) and they handled it immediately and gave us a bottle of bubbly for our trouble. Highly recommend this place!

Every year a group of us (6 women; ages 34-44) get together in October to celebrate 3 Oct birthdays and overall friendship. The host responded to questions prior to booking and throughout the lead up to our stay.
We arrived after dark and roads are very winding, narrow, and hilly (use caution). Upon arrival the host had a bouquet of fresh flowers with a welcome card (as well as a book with everything house related).
We visited both Napa and Sonoma wineries and the drive was completely manageable to all our locations.
The house was perfect. Plenty of out door amenities, sitting areas, fire places and BEAUTIFUL VIEW!! The house is a bit older (in the fact that the walls are SUPER thin) and you can hear everything if you are in either of the mail level bedrooms. Suggest brining nose canceling devices/sound machine...however it was still a perfect stay!! Would absolutely recommend staying here to anyone.

We booked this home with friends to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday and staying here at this little slice of heaven was by far the highlight of our entire wine country trip! The cottage is even more beautiful than the photos and the property itself just blew us away- we all said outloud "we're so lucky to get to stay here!" We had so many fun things planned but actually cancelled a few things just so we could spend more time at this home. There are more areas than you can count to lounge, relax, celebrate and just enjoy... we enjoyed the hot tub at least twice a day, the fire table sofa area was our favorite at sunset and we had breakfast every morning at the chic barn-house using fresh eggs & all the fruits, veggies & herbs we could carry from the amazing gardens right there on the property. We So appreciated all of the high end appliances and well-stocked kitchen for all the meals we cooked there. Communication with Kristin was so easy and helpful. We cannot wait to someday return to this incredible place!

We had such an amazing & lovely time staying at this ranch! It was even nicer and more charming than I expected. The views from the deck are expansive and gorgeous! There are ample charming places to sit and read or relax, or enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine, or eat a meal outdoors with your family or friends. The house was very clean and very well appointed (plenty of towels, good cookware, nice comfy furniture and millions of pillows, games, coffee table books, books by historic local author Jack London, etc). The kids loved the pool and the zip-line. We all loved going to gather eggs for breakfast from the chicken coup. The blackberries you pass on the way to the pool are honestly the sweetest I have ever tasted (and we picked enough to make ourselves a delicious pie!). The hot tub I only used on the last night, and regretted it, as it it a lovely wooden hot tub under the stars... I should have used it every night! This is one place that we will certainly be returning to... a very special little home on a lovely piece of land! Thank you for making our stay so peaceful and memorable!

We’ve been going to this property now for every year for 3 years. It’s the kids favorite spot and the location is perfect. Beautiful views, fresh eggs, lovely caretakers, and overall awesome house! Thanks for having us each year - looking forward to next year :)

We couldn’t have been more pleased with our stay. The house and grounds were wonderfully maintained and very well equipped for anything we wanted to accomplish. Full on high end Viking stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave for cooking as well as we do at home. Farm fresh eggs and greens from the organic garden just put it over the top. We loved the hot tub, and many great hang out areas provided. Both gas firepits gave us the warmth and ambiance we were looking for while enjoying the outdoor space. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed, including extra high quality ingredients we were able to enjoy to enhance our meals. The overall feeling from the property was super cozy, and home-like if that makes sense. We were able to settle right in and feel at home within minutes. So thankful for our time at the historic guest ranch.

We had an exquisite visit from start to finish and we all can’t wait to come back (although we’ll probably try to avoid coming back the same weekend as Bottle Rock again). The ranch was perfect and idyllic and felt like home. The views could bring you to tears. We used the hot tub and fire pit and next time we hope the weather is nice enough for a pool day. I can’t speak highly enough of this home - we can’t wait to visit again!

Lovely cottage, comfortable and cozy. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises. We enjoyed Thanksgiving at this sweet guest house. The downstairs beds are quite comfortable, and the bathrooms have a lot of charm. The only suggestion for “even better” would be to upgrade some of the appliances, as we had some trouble with the dishwasher, and we would’ve enjoyed being able to plug our Roku stick into the television.. the owner and the caretaker were both very responsive. Overall, we had a great time and we look forward to returning.

This was a lovely second visit to this property. I had come up with family earlier in the summer, and this time was with a group of friends. It was fun to see the changes in the scenery now that we're into autumn. The location is gorgeous, the host is communicative and helpful, and the house is clean and has all the necessities and then some. Folks who needed to work could do that with good internet, and we enjoyed walking around the grounds, sipping wine by the fire, warming up in the hot tub, cozying up and playing games in the comfy living room. Would definitely visit again!

A great location to get away and immerse in the natural beauty of Sonoma. We especially loved the fresh eggs we gathered each morning from the chickens, enjoying the fresh garden of veggies and the magnificent citrus everywhere. Your views are beautiful and it is very peaceful. A little trek to the vineyards but not difficult - just would say early morning fog on the curvy roads or after dark needs special care when driving.

House is in a quiet, beautiful location. The on-site caretaker was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. House was very well stocked. Would love to stay here again.

Lovely property high on Sonoma Mountain and very short drive to Glen Ellen. The house was beautiful and well appointed. Well stocked kitchen (pots and pans, spices, grillware, kitchen supplies, etc.). Lots of outdoor spaces to sit and be in the shade as the sun travels. My mom loved watching the hummingbirds drink from the small waterfall in the front garden. Bedrooms were comfy. Master bedroom has a single step down into it and another step up into the bathroom. Upstairs bedrooms are one big loft and my kid loved spreading out. It was nice walking through the garden and field on the way to the swimming pool, well shaded and warm. I loved the garden with flowers, veggies and fruits. Plus the fruit trees around the property (great figs and apples).

Stayed here for 2 weeks this summer! We loved the cottage! It was the coolest little ranch style life you could ask for in Sonoma. Tons of herb, fruit and vegetable trees/bushes on the property to get fresh farm to table ingredients, plus a chicken coop that provides fresh eggs daily! Pool is a short walk away and has amazing views. Gas fireplace on the patio was awesome to sit outside every morning and evening and enjoy the views. Cottage is a great combination of rustic and modern. Caretakers were the perfect combination of being attentive to anything that came up and also being unobtrusive and never seen or heard. Great place to really get a feel for Sonoma life. Thanks!!

Family Get Away
We wanted to extend a stay in the area after attending a family wedding. This property was perfect for us and our dogs. It has amazing views and wildlife. The on site chickens and garden is a fun bonus. The house is super cute and well equipped and the beds are super comfortable. Many wonderful and peaceful outdoor spaces to enjoy. Hosts were very kind and attentive. I didn’t want to leave to be honest and will definitely return.

Relaxing stay in wine country
We had a wonderful time at Kristin's home. The guest home was charming and comfortable. The views are incredible! I was worried about the distance to the pool with young kids, but it was manageable. There are fruit trees/plants scattered throughout with delicious plums, blackberries, lemons, and oranges and a lovely garden with some vegetables and herbs. The kids loved visiting the chicken coop and checking for eggs. They also loved the trampoline. We stayed for a week but it went by so fast! Kristin (owner) and Denny (caretaker) were responsive, flexible, and kind.
As the description mentioned, it is an older, historic home (the layout is a bit odd) that has been renovated/updated. The indoor dining area was tight for our party of 6. The pictures were accurate. The location is a bit remote and on a bumpy road, but there were some quaint restaurants, a bakery, and a grocery store nearby. Overall, we had a fun, relaxing, and memorable time!

Mountain paradise
So many lovely perches from which to enjoy the view and each others’ company! My wife and I, along with our 2 adult children and their partners enjoyed 4 days of chilling, playing, eating, swimming, biking, drawing, hot tubbing, yoga, and being together with plenty of space to also be alone. We hope to return again!

Amazing views, comfortable cottage
My wife and I together with our two adult children and their dogs stayed here for 9 days over Thanksgiving. We had a wonderful time. The property is gorgeous with incredible views in all directions. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and the outside sitting areas were spectacular.
The dogs loved the huge property.
We didn't get any eggs, but we did pick a few fresh oranges and lemons - delicious!
Communication with the owner and the caretakers was easy and quick.
Highly recommended!

There were six of us he traveled out to wine country to celebrate a birthday and have a relaxing vacation. The host left us a very nice goodie basket so we would have something to eat as soon as we arrived! House is very charming, with amazing views! If I could have my dream cottage in the mountains then this would be the place! We had all of the supplies that we could use if we wanted to stay in and enjoy breakfast or cook our own dinner. We were able to walk the property and collect vegetables, herbs, gather figs & apples from trees, and even visit with the resident chickens on the property. It was a little too cold to use the pool but the hot tub at night was fabulous. There are lots of books and games provided at the cottage. There are many places to retreat to when staying with a larger group party and everybody feels like they have their own space. My favorite was to sit in the chairs by the waterfall in the morning to enjoy coffee. Downtown Sonoma is about 25 mintues and Napa around 35mins away from the Cottage. The host was very responsive and as soon as we arrived we were told that the dishwasher was broken and we did have to plan accordingly, because we found out if we washed the dishes (for six people) we did have a few people who ended up with cold showers. A few recommendations that we would make would be to provide some more hanging storage/hooks on the top loft floor. And another full length mirror up in the loft area, would be appreciated especially when traveling with a group of women. Also the house is pretty dark at night, so having some nightlights would be fabulous.
Overall, I would stay at The Cottage again!

Sonoma Mountain Heaven
We stayed here for our post-COVID19-vaccination, extended family get together. This place is perfect for socializing/re-connecting or just getting away from the hustle. Great house, but the outdoor space stole the show. Tons of spots to sit and sip wine, multiple outdoor gas fire features, and plenty of things to keep the kids busy so the adults could chill out. Perfect place to bring the dog along. The kids loved getting up in the morning to check the chicken coup for fresh eggs. The pool is perfect for beating the Summer heat! Proximity to Glen Ellen and local wineries is perfect. The road up is a little rough, but it is short and didn't bother me at all. This will be a permanent bookmark property for us!
