About this house rental
Winter Harbor is a quaint, lobster fishing working community with charm and amenities that capture the desires of many a sight-seeing vacationer, as well as avid hikers, bikers, kayakers, boaters, photographers, artists, writers, antique and seashell hunters, and for those who just want to have a relaxing get-a-way.
Cheerful, comfortable, close, convenient…all describe our home nestled in this quaint fishing village where one can enjoy what Maine has to offer and then return to a quiet home where only Maine’s birds or a harbor’s foghorn can be heard so one can relax, reflect and rest up for a new day of adventures.
There are 3 bedrooms, all eclectically decorated with Maine themes, country quilts, artwork, antiques to provide that pleasurable “visiting grandma’s” venue yet still incorporating today’s amenities of a newly updated galley kitchen complete with local Deer Isle granite countertops with bar seating, microwave, refrigerator, ceramic cook-top, coffee maker, toaster, small oven/broiler, pots, pans, china, glassware, silverware, washer/dryer. Our open concept dining/living room features TV w/DVD & VCR player, movie library, radio/CD player, and wireless internet. Bed linens, towels, paper products, shampoo/condtioner are provided. There are 2 full bathrooms, one on each floor.
On our back porch, one can enjoy having a private moment with morning coffee and a book. Or have a BBQ or lobster out on our outdoor grill located on our lovely, stone patio with a 3- foot round, stone fire-pit. There is an awesome playground across from our home that our young visitors would certainly enjoy and parents can view easily from our home. There is also a basketball hoop nearby as well. We are on the end of a dead-end street so traffic is very limited. We also have board games, chess, backgammon, checkers, playing cards, and outdoor toys for those who would like to partake.
Ocean viewing and wading/swimming are right in town in walking distance from the house. There is also lake swimming close by for your refreshment and enjoyment.
Kayaks can be rented easily from locations mentioned in our “Welcome to our Home” book as well as other attractions, ferry & bus schedules, shops, hikes and of course the magnificent Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula whose entrance is a short 5 minute drive from our house and covers nearly 2500 acres where sightseeing, hiking, biking, picnicking are all there for your enjoyment. One might even spy a bald eagle fly by.
A free excursion bus sponsored by LLBean picks up passengers at the end of our road at Rte. 186 to take folks around Winter Harbor and Schoodic Peninsula throughout the day during the summer season allowing passengers to get off the bus at a spot and be picked up later on another bus run. We are a few minutes’ walk to the ocean, restaurants, grocery store, lobster pounds, post office, public library, historic society museum, artists’ studios, bank, farmers’ market, a unique 5&10 cent store, ice cream parlor, antique and handmade artisan crafts shops.
The nearby Bar Harbor Ferry on Sargent St. (walking distance away, .2 mi ) can take you over to Bar Harbor which serves as a leisurely transportation vehicle as well as a sight-seeing boat ride on one of the prettiest bays in Maine. Plus, one can get to see eagles, ospreys, porpoises, dolphins, seals, pilot whales along the way! There is also a public boat launch, golf course, and our historic Hammond Hall where many varied, live entertainment performances are held throughout the year, several restaurants, lobster co-ops, farmer's market, free LLBean buses tour thru Schoodic Peninsula —all just moments away from our doorstep!
Swimming is available off the rocky shores or one can seek enjoyment at Jones and Flanders Ponds with their sandy beaches and fresh waters which are just a short distance away where one can do some swimming, boating and fishing (permits required). Also, the area has vineyards hosting tours and tastings, historic buildings, unique shops, a variety of eateries, other quaint fishing villages, art galleries, antique shops, hiking trails, educational science and environmental centers, and more of Maine’s beautiful coastline, mountains and lakes…all beckoning folks to come and explore.
Out on Schoodic Peninsula one can drive, bike, walk, hike, picnic, explore the rugged coastline especially at the Point where the Atlantic Ocean crashes upon its rocky coast ( this is a must see to enjoy this beautiful Maine nature). Visit the Acadia Nat'l Park ranger station where one can learn more about the natural elements in this area, it's history, upcoming events and more.

Overall good. Barhroon sink upstairs does not drain quickly. No key to get into garage to take out trash.

This duplex is surprisingly roomy. It is also a very comfortable and convenient place to stay if you and your family want to visit Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula, the far less busy part of the park. While the location was superior, we found that if you enjoy cooking while on vacation, you might want to confine yourself to grilling and cooking very simple meals as the kitchen is very small. Additionally, during our stay the WiFi went out, and we could not access the router to restart it. Fortunately, our hosts, who were easy to contact, were able to have someone with access to the router to restart it for us eventually.

We loved staying in Winter Harbor! Our friends came from Ohio and wanted to see Acadia, and we liked staying on this quieter Schoodic side of the park. This property was comfortable and welcoming. The description was very accurate. We liked the homey touches and played the games that were provided. If you have a sensitivity to smells (we don’t) there was a musty smell to the downstairs, but it didn’t bother us at all, just an fyi. The property was cleaned and maintained well and had very clear check in and out procedures. We used the fire pit and really enjoyed it. We would definitely recommend and hope to visit again!

We enjoyed our stay. Winter Harbor is very quaint and has a laidback vibe. We found our stay to be very relaxing. We love the house’s proximity to Acadia, to the grocery store and restaurants. We could walk to the grocery store and Chase’s which was helpful. Having 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms was nice. I missed that the house did not have air. Maine was experiencing some pretty warm weather while we were there but the house stayed fairly cool. Our teens loved having the basketball hoop out front. We had a great time in Maine!

We stayed here for 4 nights with our family as part of our summer vacation. It worked perfectly for us. There was plenty of space, a playground for our kids, a nice patio out back, and the location was great. We loved the town of Winter Harbor, and the host was very nice. We would definitely stay here again.

We had a MAJOR problem our first night - NO HEAT and NO HOT WATER!! We discovered this after driving back from sunset at Cadillac Mountain which is an hour away.
The owner was VERY RESPONSIVE and ordered fuel to be delivered the next morning to provide for heat and hot water.
The gas grill was completely out of fuel. Again, the owner was responsive in providing propane the next day. The gas grill had been on fire and the knobs melted!! Had my brother not been mechanically inclined, it would have been unusable.
There is NO KERIG as stated in the description so buy coffee accordingly.
It was disturbing to read in the house rules book that the comforters and blankets are ONLY WASHED SEASONALLY!!
The garage is full of trash bags. Not sure how they get their trash picked up but IT'S FULL OF TRASH!!
The screens are full of holes which wasn't a problem for us but if you plan to stay during warm months there will be no way to get fresh air into the house without letting all the mosquitos in too.
We found that most of the activity for Acadia was on the western side of the park. We would be inclined to stay on that side next time rather than drive the one hour to those activities and Bar Harbor. That said, we thoroughly enjoyed MOOSE ISLAND in the Schoonic Peninsula close to the house.
The biggest problem with this stay is the owner is not aware of the actual condition of the home. Even though the issues were resolved, it caused stress disappointment.

We loved the location of this rental! We walked to the 5 and 10 in Winter Harbor, enjoyed the Pickled Wrinkle and the short drive to Schoodic Point. The neighborhood was very quiet!
We spent four nights here while we explored the Schoodic and Mount Desert Island.
The rental was exactly what we were expecting and fit our needs well. We had 4 adults and 3 kids and it was just enough space for us all.

The house smelled very musty, holes in window screens, slow bathroom drain. No hot water first day, resolved the next day. Not made aware that it was a duplex. We really liked the area, locals very welcoming. Property manager was friendly and helpful.

It was well equipped and perfect for a couple of moms with their 20 year old sons. We started our days with beautiful sunrises at the Peninsula and then made the drive to Acadia National Park all four days and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay!

Property needs some TLC. It gets quite hot during the day and only some windows can be opened do to the holes in the screens - I expect squirrels or similar from the shredded screens. The mosquitoes are too voracious to risk allowing them in. The front screen door opener needs attention, too.
That said, we had fun, making a joke over tripping over each other in the kitchen. The stashes of toys were an unexpected delight for our youngest member and family movie night with the videos were fun for all. The playground and open field across from the house were a boon for the kids, from 17 to 7! Maine is beautiful and we enjoyed it immensely.

Winter Harbor is a great town to stay in if you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor and just enjoy the beauty of Maine. The house was in a great location tucked away but still close enough to walk to town. We didn’t get to enjoy the playground that was right across the street due to rain but it would have been a great option. The house had everything we needed, though the kitchen was a bit small but it didn't really matter for us since we really only used the microwave and fridge. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, it was perfect for our family of 7.

We enjoyed our stay in Winter Harbor. Seeing the Schoonic Penninsula was a treat! Loved the quiet town but was a bit disappointed that although I called before booking if the ferry to Bar Harbor was running (and they said it would be), it had stopped. There were also no restaurants open in the evening in town.

When we arrived the house key lock box was already set to the code. Front door, back door and garage door were all unlocked. Had some difficulty reaching the owner/manager to report this as the owner recently passed and a phone number there hadn't been changed yet. Overall we had a nice stay!

Our stay was peaceful & rejuvenating. It’s a lovely area very close to the water and full of gorgeous Maine scenery.
We enjoyed the fire pit and on site laundry.
A few lights needed bulbs replaced and the front door lock was trickery but all in all a nice stay.

What can I say, We loved Maine. The views, the seafood. Winter Harbor was very quiet little town. Wish it did have a few more restaurants open in the morning for breakfast and some open later for supper. My son got married to his soulmate while there. So the trip is full of great memories.

House was beautifully clean and homey. We appreciated the thoughtfulness of kitchen appliances, dishes, pots and pans, and utensils. Also very much appreciated the use of bicycles in the garage: used them a couple of times during the week. WiFi and tv were much appreciated, as was the laundry facility. Billy Bob across the street was very helpful. He checked in with us the first day we arrived and we appreciated his quick response to the appearance of a mouse in the house. We did note that the locks on both front and back doors were pretty temperamental and worried that the day might come when we wouldn’t be able to make them work. Thanks for sharing this cozy home in Winter Harbor with us.

We had trouble checking in. Our recommendations would be a combination door entry lock syste

The home itself is very nice, we had some difficulty with the check in process. The lock box was open and empty when we arrived. The locks on the doors to the home are quite old, and the key did not work well in the tumblers. I would recommend replacing these. We were happy to use the grill, but unfortunately, the propane ran out while grilling our food, and the extra tank in the garage was empty. Beyond these issues, the location is very nice, with lots of space and a nice backyard. We were able to cook many meals in the kitchen.

The house was great. It had everything we needed and the owner was VERY communicative. We found it to be the perfect retreat while only being 45-60 minutes from Mt Desert Island. The basketball hoop and playground out front was great for the kids. The grill worked great, the house was very clean, and the beds were firm. The owners have simple rules compared to others and offer a book with info on the area.
The town is great and there is lots to do on the quiet side of Acadia. The bakery down the street was awesome and you have to try the “Lob Store”.
I would recommend this house for anyone.

Place was great; previous guest, not so much
The only issues I had, had to do with the previous guests leaving garbage in the garage. Otherwise the home was exactly as advertised. Comfortable and convenient. Provided my family with a great central location to a ton of Winter Harbor/Bar Harbors best.

Peaceful location!
Our party consisted of 4 adults. The house was in a very quiet neighborhood and the fir pit area was great! We loved hanging outside and being able to come back to peace and quiet after visiting busy Bar Harbor! The beds could use an upgrade and the kitchen it quite difficult to do much in but otherwise a great place to stay away from the hustle and bustle!

The kitchen was disappointing. Very small, no oven, no dishwasher...we did better at th Residence Inn!
Had a rough time trying to cook! Toaster oven makes the fire alarm go off! Also, a musty smell that we could not get rid of...

Nice house with caveat
This house is exactly as advertised. Winter Haven is a very tiny little town with few amenities. Two restaurants, and IGA fresh out of the 1950s, a five and dime also fresh out of the 50s, and a post office. There is a tiny little bakery on someone's front porch that was closing for the winter onthe day I visited. Everything else in the town was closed for the season by mid October when we visited. However, the location and proximity to Acadia from Winter Harbor is outstanding. We were literally minutes away from the Acadia entrance on the Schoodic side of the park. And after all, this is the reason I chose this particular house. The house is also only a 5-minute drive to a lobster pound which provided the best lobster we had during our whole visit in Maine. On the downside there was a very strong moldy odor that was prevalent in the house from the moment we unlocked the front door. I believe we discovered the source of this problem and I addressed it with the owner. He was very responsive. Unfortunately fixing a leak underneath a shower base would not be something that could be repaired while the house is occupied, nor did I expect it to be. I would hope this leak would be repaired immediately and I assume the moldy odor would disappear along with the leak. If you're looking for a non touristy town and place to stay this place fits the bill.

Perfection in Maine
We wanted to be near Acadia and we had never been on the Schoodic side so this was a real treat. We loved the area and this house was absolutely perfect. We had everything we needed -the house was comfortable and charming and the conveniences were well thought out. The local folks we met ( at the local grocery store, restaurants, park volunteers) were wonderful! We would go back in a minute and it certainly helped that the weather was absolutely wonderful). Thank you so much!!
