About this cabin rental
The Ausable Moose is a true Adirondack camp. This summer seasonal rental home, owned by the same family for fifty years, is lovingly decorated with Adirondack and family memorabilia. Over the years, we have hiked and biked, fished, mountain climbed, canoed, kayaked, antiqued, visited Lake Placid events, and best of all, just escaped the hustle and bustle of modern life in our cabin in the mountains.
The Ausable Moose was built in 1965 as a fishing camp and then extensively renovated and added onto in 2001 to be used as our summer home. LOCATED ON SEVEN ACRE CLEARING IN THE MIDST OF 135 PRIVATELY OWNED ACRES, the camp offers privacy and seclusion, yet is 5 miles away from Whiteface (the Olympic mountain) and only minutes from other attractions Wilmington and Lake Placid have to offer.
In Wilmington, you can walk with the wolves at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, visit Santa's summer home with the kids at the North Pole, or bike the many mountain roads and trails. You can hit the beach or rent a kayak/canoe at Lake Everest or jump the cliffs at the Flume if you dare. The trout fishing on the Ausable River is listed as the best in New York (some say the east!) so bring your fly rod! Speaking of trout, fine dining along the beautiful Ausable River at the Hungry Trout Restaurant is the perfect end to the day in Wilmington. Be sure to make a reservation for the river view table! All are only 5-10 min away.
A scenic 14 mile (20 min) drive will take you to famous Lake Placid, home of the '32 and '80 Winter Olympic Games, Ironman events, horse shows, and countless other outdoor competitions and events! Lake Placid offers more dining options including a great brewery, lots of shopping, a movie theater, and many other attractions. Bring your passport for a day trip to Montreal, only a two hour drive away.
The camp has a well-equipped kitchen (remember we've been coming here for fifty years) with stove, oven, microwave, coffee maker and grinder, food processors, utensils and new dishes and glasses.
The Great Room features a large stone fireplace, a flat screen TV with Roku (Netflix,HBO GO, etc.), a pull out sleeper couch, and room for romantic dining in front of the fireplace. There is free WiFi, and cell phone service is excellent.
Outside, there is a large Deck with more dining area, Adirondack chairs, and access to the Grilling Area with two grills: a gas grill (we supply the gas) and a charcoal/smoker grill for that juicy steak you just bought from the Little Super Market in town.
The 20x24ft screened in porch is everyone's favorite room. The porch features a dining area (seats 8 to 10), a comfortable seating area which features rockers, a futon (for those who would prefer to sleep out on the porch), an exercise bike, and a large chess set. And then there's everybody's favorite spot, the built in bar with seats for 8 plus standees. It comes furnished with all necessary glassware, a mini-frig and is the place to plan tomorrow's activities or re-hash today's. Many world problems have been solved in this place.
The master bedroom offers a queen sized bed. There is a TV set up in here also with a DVD/VCR player, along with plenty of drawer and shelf space.
The second bedroom has a double bed and a bunk bed (with a privacy curtain). There is also plenty of drawer space.
The spacious bathroom has a walk-in shower and a washer/dryer unit. Our deep drilled well provides pure high quality water.
We also have over 20 board games and throughout the camp you will find an extensive library of Adirondack books (hiking, fishing, geology, history, etc.) as well as a general selection of fiction and non-fiction books. For outside fun, we have boccie, horseshoes, badminton, smash-ball, and plenty of room to practice soccer or toss a football.
For your evening entertainment, there is a fire-pit in the back yard (we supply the wood) for you and your group to gather round, sing songs, toast marshmallows, or just to watch the Milky Way and shooting stars. By the way, this is a firefly haven. The yard is well suited if some in your group want to tent out.
Whatever you do, indoors or out, a day just hanging out at the Ausable Moose is an experience. Whether you come for a weekend or a week, you will see why we love our piece of the Adirondacks and you'll want to come back over and over again, just like we do.

We had a nice time in this cabin and we were able to travel to some of the nearby sites. We spent quite a bit of time using the screened in 3 season room. We ate most of our meals in this room and also played lots of card games. The eating area inside the cabin was not quite big enough for all 6 of us to fit around the table, so that is partly why we ate in this room, but it was a nice room to eat in. We also enjoyed one meal using the picnic table on the back deck. One evening we sat around the fire. The bedrooms were pretty nice, however, the walls did not actually go up to the ceiling, so you could hear everything from the other bedroom and see the lights from the other rooms if one room still had lights on.
We had a couple of problems while we were there and I did not hear back from the owners when I tried to text them, though maybe I should have tried calling. The washing machine did not seem to be connected to the cold water, so if you had the water on cold the washing machine would not fill up. We also could not get the overhead light to work in the 3 season room and it would have been nice to be able to use that light. Our biggest problem was we had quite a few mice in the cabin which we did not love, though reading other people's reviews they kind of expected that since the cabin was in the woods. We put traps out and caught 4 of them. Due to the mice the kitchen could use a really good cleaning.

Secluded cabin in the woods, but close to every thing you need. Very enjoyable stay.

My husband and I came up to get away for some sorely needed r&r and this rental provided it. Between the huge screened in porch and lovely back deck, we spent many hours just reading. Very close to Lake Placid and Olympic venues. We enjoyed breakfast several times at the Country Bear in Wilmington. We recommend Jimmy's 21 in Lake Placid for a special dinner.

This was the perfect place for our family of four, close to Whiteface and all the surrounding attractions. We loved eating on the deck and having a fire for smores. Highly recommend.

Private getaway
Very spacious, well equipped, shower handle assy. was very loose moved around in the wall. Water leaked out of shower door, there were quite a few ants.

Ausable Moose
Spent a week here with the grandkids. Location was very convenient for area attractions. Property is older . There were a few things that needed better maintenance but overall was great for what we needed. Meals and evenings on screened porch were very enjoyable.

Adirondack Vacation
This property meet all our needs. Well stocked with dishes, pots, and pans. Beds were comfortable. Couches satisfactory. Nice porches indoors and out in case it rains. We enjoyed the fire pit. The only issue that took a little getting use to was the bedrooms are office style walls with no ceilings so the noise traveled easily.

Nice stay in July 2021
We had a great stay at this peaceful cabin close to great hiking and beautiful nature. Nice yard and outdoor deck. The two rooms are not separated by a full wall, so not as private as some might like.

Excellent home and location for ADK High Peaks Adventures
This home is terrific and the online list is accurate. Highly recommended.
My family spent 4 nights here as our base for hiking in the High Peaks and exploring the Lake Placid/Wilmington/Keene. Kathy was helpful with local suggestions on all, plus dining and grocery shopping. The home is clean, well stocked in all the important areas (kitchen, bedrooms, and bathroom). The enclosed porch area is amazing. High marks, too, for fixing a small issues in bathroom on the same day we discovered it.
We would stay here again!

Stay at Ausable Moose
Our stay was quite enjoyable. The home was as depicted and comfortable. The shower could use some attention, but the rest of the home was very satisfactory. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes. We especially enjoyed playing games in the screened room.

Ausable Moose Camp
Owners were very helpful with info regarding things to do in the area. The camp is rustic but comfortable with room to spread out. The beds are comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. The WiFi was good. Lots of ceiling fans. Linens and towels provided is great. Oh, and they have An interesting sound system and a copy of Roadhouse on DVD. The area is beautiful with easy access to hikes and fishing. The town park in Wilmington is a gem with covered area, beach, fire pits, picnic tables and restrooms. The Town of Wilmington gets a 5 star rating from us for Covid compliance. We enjoyed ourselves.

The Ausable Moose was a great place to stay
Kind of like a cabin with modern plumbing and kitchen. It is close enough to some basics (groceries, ice cream, restaurants) that it is a great launching pad for an Adirondack trip. It also has some good outdoor space that our kids koved.

Great base camp
My children and I enjoyed our stay at camp. It was a great place to come back to after our many adventures. It is so close to so many things do do right in the Wilmington area and a short drive to Lake Placid. I especially enjoyed the screened in patio and bar area. It is great place to hang out at night with a campfire outside. The owners are very responsive and easy to work with. Do expect mice which I am sure every camp has.

Good deal for the price
If you are looking to be close to the Ironman race (which we were) this is not the best place. Because of road closures, it took us 50 minutes to get into Lake Placid on race day. Otherwise, the route was no big deal. The layout of the house was perfect for us. I don't like to be critical, but the amount of knickknacks was overwhelming, and I think it would be more relaxing with some of that removed. We also heard mice (totally understandable in the woods) but the ants were a bit of a problem. We were constantly stepping on ants or dead carcasses, and my husband was bit one night in bed by something . That being said, we had a nice visit, and the price was reasonable during a time when it is difficult to get anything under $400 per night,

Great place to relax!
This place has a personality. A lot of space and privacy. The surrounding area offers a lot of hiking trails. A small beach and a beautiful river just 5 minutes away.

Nice cabin in the woods
The cabin is located in a beautiful area in the high peaks region with plenty of things to do nearby. We loved exploring the various waterfalls and rivers in the region.
The cabin is cozy, with plenty of room and has a very generous amount of cups, plates, silverware, pots and pans as well as bedding and linens, more than most vacation homes. There were also lots of spices, coffee filters, sugar etc which is nice if you cook your own meals.
You can tell this is a well used and well treasured family property and the owners must be very trusting folks as many of their personal Knick knacks make the house cozy. There were lots of books, games, tv, internet and places to hang out on a rainy day with a large, screened front room. The property is quiet and secluded.
Do realize you are in a cabin in the woods and there was a bit of a mouse problem ( we caught four) .One night the garbage can outside was raided by raccoons. The caretaker came by the next day to remove the garbage upon texting the owner. Property could use some thorough cleaning under beds, couches and corners.
Aside from that we had a great time and the owner was very responsive.

It was everything I expected it to be
Such a quaint and comfortable spot to explore the Adirondacks! Felt like I was in "On Golden Pond"(without the pond). Patrick was very responsive and we had a delightful time with our grand daughters! Thank you so much for your hospitality!

Adirondack Mountain Getaway
Myself and two other friends stayed at this property recently on a trip to volunteer at Ironman Lake Placid 2018. We loved the property. We enjoyed the off the beaten path feel yet the property was only a 15 to 20 minute drive to Lake Placid Village. The home was very well maintained and clean. We enjoyed being able to sit out on the back deck and relax and soak in all that natural beauty that the area is well known for. The owner provided good recommendations on places to eat and adventures to explore while in town.

Awesome place to stay, great location to everything!
Beautiful camp, very accommodating; private and close to everything. Would of given it a 5, but unseasonably warm 90's and no screen in sliding glass door in living room; ceiling fans helped. I can imagine this is a great place in Fall!

Excellent
After 3 days of camping in lake Eaton. We where so excited to be going to an actually enclosed home with heat and a fridge and beds. Needless to say my self all the kids and boyfriend absolutely loved the place . Our stay. We had everything other then the perishable items. It was cozy warm and inviting. My 4 year old loved the yard the games the deck the bunk beds. He was so cozy and at home. The little out house decor gave me a kick lol. I hope to be able to go up next year minus the camping. Haha. Close to everything . The hungry trout was great. Took my 4 year old to the North pole Santa's workshop. He loved that as well as did I. I can't think of anything but wonderful for the camp. Thank you for allowing our family to enjoy your little piece of home away from home. Ps the climes where amazing and white face was stunning..
From the teenagers.. they loved the fireplace and the bar that got a kick out of that. All the little nicnacs they found amusing. Everyone in all was very satisfied. Thank you again ,Danielle N

Enjoyable secluded camp in a great location. Priced right.
The camp is well equipped inside and out. It was nice to have firewood provided. There was plenty of sleeping space for our group of six. The location is very good and convenient to many places we visited.

Wonderful place to stay in an absolutely beautiful location!
This was an absolutely wonderful place to stay, in a beautiful location at the heart of a great area to vacation.
Beautiful house, helpful and friendly owner, and a perfect location made the Ausable Moose a key part of a wonderful vacation.
Great place to be alone and away from it all while still being convenient to everything -- right near great hiking (whiteface is a few minutes away), and a short drive from downtown Lake Placid, the cabin was also a beautiful and relaxing place to hang out in its own right.
A wonderful time was had by all!

Great place to stay at
Had a wonderful time at the Ausable Moose with some old high school friends. The screened in porch is an amazing spot to hang out and sleep in. It is the perfect place to relax at after a long day of exploring. The owners were very easy to work with and the house was very clean when we arrived. The washer/dryer and good cell reception are major bonuses as well.

Great Camp
This property is a private camp with all the essentials one would need. The owners are VERY responsive and the caretaker was wonderful. Beds were comfortable and each room had a fan for cooling. The screened in porch is huge and there is a large fire pit (With wood provided) in the ample backyard. Many indoor and outdoor games if you want and lots of books for reading. Whiteface is about 2 miles away and Lake Placid about 10 miles. House is set back into woods off a semi-busy road. Highly recommended as a place to relax or a base for activities in the High Peaks!
