About this house rental
The house is named the Carousel because it is an octagon, designed with rooms arranged around about a massive central post. It is a cozy, two bedroom house on a rocky bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The house has a spectacular view of Metinic, Two Bush and Matinicus Islands. It sits on a quiet dead-end road near the village of Tenants Harbor and in the small community of Harts Neck. Tenants Harbor is about 12 miles from Rockland, an interesting town with museums and galleries.
The layout consists, moving counter-clockwise, of the front hall, 2 bedrooms, each with a newly renovated private bathroom, a welcoming living room/dining room facing the ocean and a well equipped, updated kitchen with gas stove and dishwasher. Upstairs, there is a loft with one bed that overlooks the living room, ideal as a studio or third bedroom. A porch off the dining room overlooks the cliffs and is the perfect place to relax or to entertain. There is heat from a gas stove and a gas monitor and new small heaters in the downstairs bedrooms. There is also also cable TV.
The ocean is endlessly fascinating! With a clear northwester, you can see hundreds of islands, yachts and lobsterman pulling their traps, while in the fog, you are enclosed in your private world. There are many wonderful places to walk or ride bikes, and renters have the use of a private dock and tennis court nearby. The town also offers warm water quarry swimming and the opportunity for boating of all kinds during summer months. The Rockland area has many terrific restaurants, galleries and museums, although it slows down in the fall.
Families looking for day camp for their children could take advantage of the excellent Blueberry Cove camp down the street.
An added note: no one should visit without taking the day trip out to Monhegan!

I feel very lucky to have stumbled upon this rental. It gave our family everything we were looking for for our vacation. It's peaceful, it's well kept and loved and this family obviously cares about the legacy they have inherited.
The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. The living room was very comfortable. The house is stocked with lots of things so if you rent this house ask before you bring something. I say this because more than likely it's at the house. All the beds were comfortable and falling asleep to the sound of the waves was the best. I especially loved the linens and the down puff I had on my bed. Bathrooms were new. My son loved the clawfoot soaker tub. The outdoor fire was perfect for the chilly nights. Now for my favorite part of the house...the deck that overlooks the water. We were lucky enough to have 5 days of sunshine so every morning I was able to enjoy my coffee out there watching the waves and lobster boats. We spent most of our time on the deck.
We hope to make a trip to The Carousel an annual vacation.

The house is unusual, but comfortable and well stocked with whatever you might need. Many windows facing the ocean and the sound of the waves is a constant....a wonderful way to fall asleep. I loved the peace and quiet and it was a very restful vacation.

We needed a quiet getaway so we returned after a couple of years "off" and enjoyed it very much. The place is in excellent condition.

We had a wonderful relaxing time, the carousel was the perfect size for all of us. Loved the deck and all the windows, hearing the ocean was amazing! The only thing we lacked was a pizza cutter, but we made do.

This is a wonderful property to experience all that Maine has to offer. You will enjoy the sound of the ocean instead of cars or people. The area has miles of manicured trails that we walked daily. Five minutes away is Port Clyde where you can catch the ferry to Monhegan and enjoy dramatic views and challenging hikes. The house is cozy and comfortable with a gas fireplace for chilly mornings. The owner kept in contact to make sure we were comfortable. Great Maine experience.

We stayed a week in the lovely Carousel house by the sea. We spent hours sitting on the deck overlooking water, watching the waves, the tide, the sky changing, the lobster boats, and sailboats. We even spotted some Bald Eagles. The view is just everything, and can also be enjoyed from the living room with lots of windows.
The house was tidy and clean when we arrived, and we had all we could need during our stay. It's not a fancy place, but so very comfortable and welcoming, like a vacation cabin should be. We stayed in mid September, so we used the gas fireplace/stove to warm up the house in the morning and evening. (Turn it on and off a couple times to get it to light.)
We didn't cook a lot but when we did, we had everything we needed. The kitchen is well stocked. It was great to have a washer/dryer on site, and a dishwasher.
We discovered a delicious sandwich take-out spot nearby, Ancho Honey. We were there for the last weekend of the season for some of the more crowed, touristy places, but we got a nice seat on the sunny deck of the nearby Happy Clam and enjoyed a yummy meal.
Try to arrive in the daylight! It was a little confusing getting to the the Carousel from the paved road. Turn left off of Hartsneck Rd, and then immediately turn left again to be on Richardson Rd, a narrow, dirt lane. The immediate right after you turn on Richardson is the Carousel driveway.
We would love to go back someday!

What a wonderful vacation. Fantastic views and loved the cottage/carousel. Very comfortable and amply supplied with anything you might need. Love the location and the privacy it provides. Sounds of the ocean are amazing! Never got tired of hearing the waves crash against the rocky coastline. Cozy and comfortable inside and out and the owners are terrific. Very responsive and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay a pleasant one. Would definitely recommend this location! Hope to return for a future stay.

Late October stay provided brisk temperatures. The sunrises were varied and when overcast it was downright cold. All in all another beautiful Maine adventure was had. Thank you Jenifer

This property is on a beautiful spot, with nearby trails, tennis and dock. The home is well appointed and has up close ocean views and access. Tenant’s Harbor offers restaurants and a general store and there is more to do in nearby Port Clyde, although in both communities things were often not open as expected.
As end of season guests, we found it to be cold in this uninsulated house when temps dipped into the 30s since bedrooms and baths don’t have access to heat from the main area. The home was wearing a season’s worth of dirt that quick weekly cleanings hadn’t caught, including a problem with fly and gnat infestations in the kitchen.
The high tide cycle around 11 pm this time of year causes loud, crashing waves right below the house at bedtime, which may keep you awake the first few nights if you are a light sleeper.
Any loft sleepers have to go into someone’s bedroom at night to use a bathroom, since the bathroom entrances are inside bedrooms. The loft stairs are steep and located inside a closet.
All of that said, the house was enjoyable and our visit good, despite these surprises.

We really really enjoyed our stay. Many upgrades to the home made the stay pleasant, especially the kitchen. We like to make our own meals when we rent as cooking is enjoyable to us. A couple of things do need attention however, the living room seating furniture is tired, soiled and really needs replacing. Also some of the bed linen and mattress pads should be replaced. One of the things we expect when renting is top quality beds and linens. Lastly a gas grill is a must and should be added as an amenity . Thanks for a memorable time in Maine!

We enjoy every minute at this property. Waves crashing on the rocks 24 hours a day. We find it so soothing that we had a difficult time leaving. Very little shopping or sightseeing this year. The ocean is ever- changing. We even spotted a whale’s spout!

Perfection
The house, the ocean, and the surrounding sites offered unique experiences. Our stay in the Carousel at Tenant's Harbor was perfection—and we are keen to return.

A House with a View
On entering this delightful octagonal wood-built house you are met with a spectacular 180° view of the ocean from the living room. Then it’s time to explore this surprisingly spacious house, discovering how wonderfully cosy it is. The living room, dining room and well-equipped kitchen are perfectly set out. But it is the veranda that is the most exciting feature of this house, providing wonderful vistas down to and across the sea, while also being a great place to sit in the sun and to eat al fresco.
The house provides a great base for exploring this part of Maine: south to quaint Port Clyde and to Monhegan Island (definitely a must!); north to all the charming towns on the western side of Penobscot Bay; or along the coast to Boothbay Harbor, etc.
We really enjoyed our stay here! Thank you, Jenifer …

Cozy, rustic and great ocean sounds!
Cozy, rustic home with beautiful ocean surf sounds and views right outside the octagonal home on the cliff above. Relaxing atmosphere and nighttime stars are bountiful. Well-equipped kitchen with gas stove and lobster pot! Great gas heater and gas-fireplace stove kept the home plenty-warm off-season (late October). Window seat is a real treat. Lots of fields and well-maintained trails within walking distance to explore with fantastic forests and expansive ocean views. Lots of small villages to also explore and Carousel is only 1/2 hour from Rockland, ME and its’ many attractions. Carousel is a real slice of Heaven lovingly enjoyed and cared for by its’ owners.

Home away from home
The Carousel is a special place, and we love going there every year. It is a house with beautiful views, well-equipped for all one’s needs for a week in lovely and peaceful mid-coast Maine. Every year we discover new places we love to eat and hike in the area, and thus more reasons to come back again. It’s a house that’s been loved it seems by the owners and so it feels like home to us as well. Already looking forward to next time.

Oh the view from that deck!
Great location and very relaxing.
Many details make this property worth renting. The beautiful view from the deck, A Weber charcoal grill, the smokeless fire pit and being so close to the ocean you can easily spend your entire week just listen to the waves are just a few reasons you will enjoy your time at this property.

Our stay at the Carousel House in 6/22
This house was so unique! The main living space has a wall of windows overlooking the ocean. The gas fireplace was nice on some of the cooler nights and mornings. The porch overlooking the rocks and ocean below were gorgeous! The kitchen was stocked with everything you could need. The bedrooms were comfortable.
Great location on Maine’s mid-coast, an easy drive to a lot of lighthouses and things to do up the coast or down the coast on other peninsulas.

A Hidden Gem
Nestled back in the woods right on the ocean, mesmerizing views and the soothing sounds of waves crashing on the rocks all night long. Of all the VRBO rentals we've used in 10 years, this is among the best. My wife raved over one of the best stocked kitchens we've seen, the layout of the home is very functional, exposed wood & beams provide that cabin in the woods feel. Comfortable, simple pleasures while nature gives you the rest. Day trips to Damariscotta, Wiscasset, Searsport & more gave us plenty to do, good restaurants nearby (try The Clam right in town - German & Seafood - strange combo but the food was wonderful we tried both). We look forward to returning next year!

Wonderful as always
We’ve rented the carousel house twice now, and plan to again... It’s the perfect place for our family; close to the harbor, safe for our kids to ride their bikes, with plenty to do all around.
The house is very comfortable and well equipped, and the view really can’t be beat! The rustic cabin feel is perfect for the setting, and is what Maine is all about.....

The most wonderful vacation we had in years
This house is absolutely perfect and there is not much else I can add. It is beautiful, comfortable, clean, has every single thing you might ever need. The surroundings and views are stunning, there is access to rocks and tide pools for exploring, and the deck you wouldn't want to leave. We'd love to come back. Thanks you.

Happy Place!
We've stayed at Carousel several times and never tire of the ocean views and the sound of waves hitting the rocky shoreline. The tranquility of the setting makes it well worth a longish drive to the restaurants and activities of Rockland and Camden. On this trip we discovered our new favorite Lobster Pound, McLoon's, and returned to Primo, a favorite restaurant, and as good as ever. This continues to be our "happy place!"

This property is excellent for a small family or girls weekend. The large yard provides an option for popular lawn games. Magical Place
We would need many more than five stars to describe the house and our stay. We felt like we knew this place as soon as we drove into the driveway. The house was inviting, comfortable. We felt welcome in the space. We found everything that we needed, especially surprised by the Norwegian cheese slicer in the drawer!
We managed to visit our favorite shops: Hello,Hello Books and Good Tern Food Co-op and hiked up Bald Mountain even though we found it hard to leave the beautiful house.
Watching the storms come in, the sun rise, the tide on the cliff, and the hummingbird visit on the last morning... precious memories for the three of us: Elisabeth, Roy, and Daisy the Pug.
Thank you Jenifer and Nina for your hospitality. We hope to come back next year.

As great as it looks...and even better!
The house is as great as it looks in the pictures and even better in many ways. Both of the bathrooms are new and bathed in natural light all day. Long baths in the clawfoot tub in the bath off the master while listening to the ocean below were such a treat. The weather was a bit cloudy and foggy the week we were at the Carousel House—but because the house was so great we didn’t mind. We opened up all the windows in the livingroom to listen to the ocean and lit a fire with the woodstove in fireplace mode most days and read in the very comfortable living room. There were many, many unexpected things about the property that we enjoyed immensely. First was how private the setting was. Down on the rocks in front of the house you are encased by cliffs on either side which creates your own private slice of ocean. The house is set back off a dead end road in a rural setting yet still affords a very short walk to the tennis courts and to the dock. The tennis courts are truely exceptional. The dock is very well maintained and a great place to sit and watch the boats go by or swim and fish from. We enjoyed the other families we met on the dock and along the walk—all were very pleasant and many are families that have been renting on Harts Neck in the same houses for many years. This sweet little neighborhood and associated amenities are truely the best St. George has to offer. The house was very well appointed with the little things that make a big difference like quality firewood and kindling, a very well appointed kitchen, and quality beds and linens. We’ll be back!

Stunning view, perfect Maine vacation spot
My wife and I arrived a few days ago and were immediately pleased on driving in that the house was so much bigger than it looked online. The ocean views are truly stunning with the constant sound of crashing waves. The house itself is perfect for relaxing. The wood stove was very effective in warming the house on the first couple of days when the evenings and mornings were on the chilly side. Great kitchen, well-stocked supplies, everything designed for comfort. We will be back! And by the way my wife said the best lobster roll was a little place in Port Clyde, The Dip Net, where you pick up the ferry to Monhegan (a beautiful day trip). If you head to Monhegan I highly recommend hiking the south part of the island where the views and scenery are best. Dinner at Primo in Rockland is a must (we went three times!). It is our happy place and now we can add the Carousel to that shortlist.

A spot of heaven on the coast of Maine
Each summer for the past few years we have returned to what we think of as a spot of heaven on the coast of Maine. Carousel speaks to us in many ways , from the sound of the sea meeting the rocks below and lulling us to sleep, to the warmth of the wood stove on chilly days, we find our rest and peace here. On sunny days the clay tennis court calls or walks in the woods or down to the rocks below to bask in the sun may be in order. Carousel is our home away from home and we have enjoyed our time and look forward to a return this coming summer.
Thank you Jenifer for making your family home available. We hope others will enjoy it as much as we do.

Enchanting!
This was our second year to spend a week in September at the Carousel. We will definitely want to return again and again. The house is beautifully located on a bluff overlooking the ocean with a deck that offers gorgeous views of the sunrise, the ocean with working lobster boats and, of course, the sound of surf pounding below. One special feature that we loved was the way the sun warms the deck in the morning so that even on chilly September morings it was comfortable to sit outside and enjoy coffee with the view. Inside, the house is well equipped for cooking and relaxing. We loved the comfortable living room with its many windows, making it possible to enjoy the view even on rainy or stormy days. There are two bedrooms downstairs, each with its own bathroom (beautifully rennovated) and a bed upstairs in the loft. The only problem I could find with the house is that a couple sleeping upstairs cannot access a bathroom without going through one of the downstairs bedrooms. If children are sleeping in the loft ths might be ok, but not for, say, a third couple. Otherwise, I would say the house is perfect. If you prefer to do something other than sit on the deck, there are lovely places to visit nearby - for example, the Marshall Point Lighthouse, the little village of Port Clyde, Drift-in Beach, the Lobster Lane Used Bookstore (unfortunately only open on weekends) and Monhegan Island which has a nice boat ride to get there and some wonderful hiking. The house and its surroundings are all a very special experience!

Wonderful views and very comfortable house with excellent cook's kitchen
We spent a lovely week at the carousel cottage -- loving the view, the sound of the waves on the rocks below and enjoying cooking in the newly remodeled kitchen. We highly recommend the house to families, or two couples. You won't want to leave once you get there!

Beautiful house, gorgeous location and stunning views
We had a charming 5 night stay in this beautiful house, with all the intentions of doing so many things- however, we found it hard to tear ourselves away from the property- its stunning views and peaceful location drew us in and we found it hard to leave! We did visit Arcadia Park, which was amazing but our favorite was the day trip to Monhegan Island- a must do! We are hoping to come back next year (and the year after that!)

Charming place, newly renovated
You won't find a more charming place along the coast of Maine. The whole front of the house facing the ocean is windows. You fall asleep at night listening to the waves crashing on the rocks below. The kitchen has been newly renovated and is bright and cheery. The bathrooms have just been updated and are great. There is so much to do in Tenant's Harbor or, if you like, nothing at all. We had a rainstorm one evening with the most spectacular double rainbow over the ocean. This place is quiet and peaceful. There are books and movies; the internet access is great; and the climb down to the rocks is fun. You would do well to give this place a second and third look. We love it.

Sixth Time Renting
My husband and I have repeatedly rented the Carousel as a get-away from the stresses of life. I have even written a book over those years. So that's the way we use it, but one could hike the trails, rent a kayak, take a ferry to Monhegan.
This year there were many improvements. The kitchen was enlarged and updated. It was fun to cook and my guess is that it's a 5 star kitchen even a five star chef would love.
The bathrooms had lovely makeovers and, for us, the most important addition was a nice heater which takes the chill of off-season visits.
The location is perfectly situated up high right on the ocean. My favorite part is going to sleep to the sound of the waves, and awaking to them in a different rhythm, a different tide.
My husband loves good restaurants and we particularly like the Dip Net in Port Clyde, Slip Way in Thomaston and Primo in Rockland.
We would, of course, recommend you come visit.
