Bronte - Location
Bronte is an absolute beachfront property. Built directly on the sand of the beach itself, it is very secluded and private. It is a battleaxe block hence not visible from any road. it is a hidden gem.
Bronte is located on Long Island, directly opposite the main Frankston city area which is accessed by a footbridge on Beach St over Kananook Creek. A short walk along Beach St leads to the Frankston train line to the Melbourne CBD. The Frankston city features many fine international restaurants. My husband recommends the pizzas or a seafood platter from La Porchetta. In addition to fine restaurants, McDonalds is also close at hand for the kids.
Long Island itself is a quiet residential area sandwiched between Kananook Creek and Port Phillip Bay. It is a mile long and goes from Mile Bridge (one of 2 road entry points) and the mouth of Kananook Creek which empties into the Bay near the Frankston pier and Lifesaving Club. A 8 km nature trail starts at Beach St and follows Kananook Creek north to Carrum (train back).
Frankston is the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula which features many tourist attractions including wineries, national parks, ferries, surf beaches, and hot springs. Your choice of activities is almost endless.
Frankston is also the largest city in the Mornington Peninsula with all the trappings including nightlife, cinemas, restaurants, cafes, major shopping centres, boat hire, government offices, train station, car hire, direct bus to airport, op shops, pawn shops, a public library, a performing arts centre, and a new aquatic center to name a few.
The beach opposite Bronte is a great beach where small children can swim safely. There are 3 sand banks which take you out more than 200 meters before the water is permanently over an adult's head.
History of Bronte
Bronte got a letter from the queen this year congratulating her on her 100 year birthday.
Bronte was built as a holiday shack in 1921. It is built of weatherboard and fibro cement with a tin roof. It has 10 foot (3 metre) ceilings which are painted wood-panelling. The walls are also painted wood-panelling. Originally there were 4 rooms, a kitchen, a lounge and 2 bedrooms. The kitchen and lounge shared a chimney but each had its own fireplace.
The 1930's saw the addition of a sunroom with a leadlight bay window and a sleepout (bedroom) both facing the beach. A bathroom, laundry, and kitchen were also added to the rear.
The next addition was in the 1960's when mains sewer came to Long Island. As a consequence, a toilet was added. The adult size original potty is still in the bedside cabinet in the front bedroom should you desire a unique experience. If you do use it please empty into the flush toilet as there is no longer a night service on Long Island!
The 1990's' featured a major renovation to upgrade the property whilst preserving many original features. Knob and tube wiring was replaced. Lead pipes were replaced with copper. The chimney and fireplaces were removed and a hanging beam installed in the roof space to create an open plan living space. The ceiling was insulated and energy efficient climate control technology installed. The bath and kitchen were upgraded with ceramic tiles. An entertainment deck was built on the sand on the beach side. Just forward of the deck are the sand dunes of the foreshore itself.
Furniture which remains from the 1920's and 1930's included the ice chest and food safe which are now used as pantries, the original kitchen dresser, and much of the bedroom furniture.
The original owners were 2 English sisters. The current family purchased Bronte from the sisters in 1956 complete with all furniture and furnishings. Two generations of children grew up spending summer holidays at Bronte with their families and cousins. The third generation has arrived with cousins in Perth and the recent births of 2 gorgeous grandsons in Melbourne. However, the current owner who lives in Canberra still finds that she is not using the beach shack as often as she would like. Hence she has reluctantly made Bronte available to the general public for part of the year. The husband of the current owner is a builder who ensures that although historic, Bronte has no major maintenance problems. He has compensated for sloping floors by modifying the furniture to keep it level.

An excellent stay despite the rain!

Great location. Exactly what and where we needed. This is our second stay at Brontë and we will be back next August

We stayed on a wet and wild long weekend Friday thru to Monday .
It was just like a family owned holiday cabin from my childhood. I could see my great aunt sitting in the kitchen listening to football on a radio. Location was fantastic ,Frankston has so many new bars and restaurants to try .The ducted heating was brilliant especially since it was so cold and wet outside, and we were never cold inside.
If you expect a 5 star shack that has been done up to an aesthetic then not the place for you . But if you want a rental that has the character of generations enjoying time together whether playing games or on the beach without stressing ,then this is perfect . We will book again oneday in the warmer weather .

What we love about Bronte is that we can take our dogs, and walk out the back gate onto the beach.

We loved the character of the house. Kids loved experiencing our era of living.Took us back in time.Beach on the back doorstep.Loved the sloping floors made a game up as we were walking through the house. As we are busy people,we found the house inviting and relaxing. Even liked watching the backyard wild life LOL. Didn't need to use our cars.We so wished we could’ve been able to stay another night.Owner's easy to communicate with. Definitely will return for a stay. Thankyou Roger and Jill for our stay xo

Great place, could do with abit of fixing up tho.

This property is old in close to the original condition but I would describe it as historical. A lovely old cottage in a fantastic location. Clean and cosy. If you are not expecting luxury it is perfect for couples or smallish families. Our 3 Golden Retrievers loved the secure yards. Highly recommended. My only minor issue was having to supply all linen. Understandable during Covid peak but most properties have moved on from that.

Right on the beach with easy access, close enough to go out for the nightlife of Frankston area either walking or driving. Close to shopping areas and the main highway to get through to surrounding areas yet far enough away so you could not hear the traffic. Great stay.

We stayed at Brontë over Easter 2023. The weather wasn’t in our favour but we still loved staying here.
Back gate to the beach was awesome for walks with the dogs and up to restaurants.
The hose was really clean and well stocked. Kitchen had everything including a very large fridge.
There was so much space also.
Literally 400m to the shopping centre, faster to walk than drive.
Had fun at General Public and Holey Moley etc.
The house is so cozy even in the cold with the heating and it’s lovely and quiet. It’s a little view back in time whilst the big McMansions are being built all around.
Locals helped us find a Geocache which was fun 😄.
Loved this quirky property and look forward to coming back again.

Loved my stay at Bronte!
Absolute beachfront (just outside the back gate), great Webber bbq, good sized rooms & delightfully fitted out throughout - including a great library of books and DVDs.
Communication with the hosts was prompt, friendly, & entirely professional.
If you’re after a slick, white, polished soulless property - Bronte’s probably not for you, but as many other review have described, Bronte’s a disguised & fine old lady.
Yes, she’s a bit creaky in parts, the furniture & fittings suit her beautifully, and therefore she’s full of character.
Huge range of utensils & cooking gear as well as some beachside treats in the garage to use at your leisure.
Off street parking in the shed as well as the generous driveway is a great bonus.
Just a short, easy, and delightful stroll to any & all of the shops & restaurants Frankston has to offer.
My only concern with leaving this review is that Bronte might not be available when next I want to stay there - & having been once, there will most certainly be a next stay at Bronte.
Many thanks to Jillian & Roger.

My husband and I were really taken with Bronte the moment we saw it. It's in original condition and very quirky. The house is spacious and comfortable with everything you need. The front yard with the deck and table under the trees was magical. The location was second to none- right on the beach and peaceful yet very near to shops and walking trails. . We and our daughter and her partner loved our week at this quintessential Australian seaside house. Communication with the owner was very easy as well..

We stay there as my partner has to work every day and so he can walk to work it saves him driving one and e half hours each way

My family rated this property as perfect, charming and cute. 30 steps to the beach and a short walk to shops and restaurants. Like being at Nana's house.

Beachside Bronte. She's an oldie but a good one.
Great place for people travelling with dogs. Fenced in yard.
Shops and train station within walking distance.
No need to drive to city with train station close by.
Open the gate and you're on the beach.

It had everything possible that we would need, available in the house. What we needed to bring to the house was clearly spelled out in the advertising of the property (linen etc.)
Location of the property right on the beach and also within close proximity to anything we needed.
Would certainly be looking to stay there again in the near future.

Long Island.
Marvellous position!
Strange with shopping centres so near, yet facing Port Phillip Bay.
So close to so much of the penninsula.
I'm moderately disabled, but 100 year old (quirky) house was not a problem. Couldn't walk on local beach though.
It was one of my favoured times, away.
Back/front sunroom was lovely.
Such a find!
I thank the hosts for their upkeep, information and easy communication.

A beautiful oasis in Frankston.
Everything we needed was available. Seven of us and the dog stayed. The access to a beautiful beach is fantastic. It was a real treat and not too far to drive! Will definitely keep this place on the list of easy holidays.

Perfect beach shack location
Couldn't have asked for a better location with an amazing price. Love staying at Bronte, we didn't cook, got take away for all meals. Loved the rustic nature of the house. We'll be back, that's for sure!

Visiting The Lorax
Dangerous for people with disabilities as the floor is not level throughout the house. A quirky, crooked house which reminded us of a DR Suess book! A quiet, secluded location right on the beach. Had everything required for a home away from home - but don't forget to locate the paragraph which states to bring your own sheets and towels! There is also a garage for secure parking, but the area is also secure enough to park in front of the garage (if you have 2 vehicles). Great fencing if you choose to take your fur baby with you - though may be a bit low on the beachside if your dog is a jumper. Walking distance to a shopping centre and the train station or great for early morning walk along the board walk.
A few geo caches around if you are that way inclined.

What a fantastic place
Property is old it's not perfect but has charm and the price is great if you want something perfect you would pay twice, three times as much and I bet the location would ever come close to this one. What a wonderful location right on the beach and so quiet you could be anywhere not a couple of 100 metres away from the Bayside Plaza, train 🚆 station, cafe and shops. A short walk to the Frankston pier fishing 🎣 or just a relaxing walk.
JUST PERFECT
Thank you for a wonderful place to stay definitely would stay again next time down in that way

Back gate leads onto beach. Ducted cooling and heating right thru the house, hot showers (outside shower for coming off the beach).Short walk to Bayside shopping centre & eateries. Great fridge/freezer. Lockup garage. Secure yard for our dogs. If you don’t like old quirky houses this wouldn’t suit you. We took all our own bedding. Will be back for sure. Thanks Roger.
