Raven prepared a fabulous breakfast with an out-of-this-world fruit arrangement.

The owners Raven & Mark were PHENOMENAL!...
The information about the property, accommodations and information about the area - they were very informative and knowledgeable.
The breakfast every morning was healthy and delicious! The short walk on the back of the property to the old lava flow beach was fun & a bit challenging due to the rain. Still, my teens and I enjoyed it. My teenage son enjoyed Mark & Raven so much they had a jam session! The living area is full of classics vinyls and instruments guests can play!!! PHENOMENAL! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
No air conditioning in the Family Suite. I learned on my Hawaiian journey that all Hotels & BBs don't offer a/c. Have to do your research. They had plenty of fans and all windows had screens so you could open them and get a nice nightly breeze in December without insects coming in.
Also, I didn't realize the only shower/bath option for the Family Suite was the outdoor shower. But, because of the nice weather it was more of an "experience" every time we showered.
Nice memories. I've always wanted to shower outdoors, just wish I had an option as it rained on me once or twice.
Still, it was truly an unforgettable experience.

Nothing to like.
This is nothing like the offered accomodation. No bathroom, that can be called one. No air conditioning, no terrace, no seaview, etc. All that I paid for. Here you can not do anything. There is no beach, no road anywhere, since the lava blocked the beach and all roads to the South. If you want to go anywhere, you have to go back to Hilo.
The lady meeting the guests (neighbor or owner, not clear, she gave controversial information), is a weird person, honestly frightening. The common room is not separated from the bedroom of the owner or whoever. What they call a bathroom is a toilet. And they have a tub in the garden, probaly well observed from the house. There is no sign on the house or even the street.

Raven and Marc are the sweetest hosts ever.
They took so much care of us, and their dedication is incredible.
This is really a true local experience , don’t go if you are afraid of little critters, or expect a Hilton hotel.
We cannot recommend this more for adventurous families, or friends, or couples that want to experience the real Hawaii !

I absolutely LOVED staying here I was greeted by a beautiful couple and they were so nice it felt like I knew them for years they definitely made you feel like you were at home. The location was so magical.. it was so beautiful seeing the Hawaiian geckos enjoying breakfast with us and listening to lovley Koki frogs at night.. walked out to the beach path and looked at the waves.. short drive to the black sands beach. Raven is such a beautiful soul inside and out and she makes a super fabulous healthy breakfast with coffee and mark has the warmest smile and presence. We really enjoyed our stay! Will return forsure thanks so much again!

Extraordinary location! Raven and Mark were very attentive hosts. Our best stay in Hawaii!

Property was not as advertised. There was no balcony overlooking the ocean and no accessible beach front. No air conditioning and no restaurants nearby. Mavern the owner however was pleasant even though the property did not meet our expectation. We left a day early.

Everything! It is a rare jewel tucked away in what feels like a jungle that allows you with just a brief walk to be right there by waves crashing on the lava at the ocean. It was magical! Raven & Mark our hosts are incredible. Raven is so thoughtful in her hospitality (also in serving her yummy breakfasts) & Mark has the BEST stories and touring advice. We used his insight to plan the rest of our stay elsewhere on the Island. He was spot on. We had so much fun!
Nothing. But I will say it is a unique property. Do not expect a fancy hotel. It gave us a taste of that authentic Hawaii experience If you come with those expectations, it will definitely not disappoint! Hope we can return some day.

Raven & Mark were exceptional hosts and the house and property were beautiful. The family suite was spacious and we loved the outdoor shower & tub among the trees & orchids. Raven prepared scrumptious breakfasts that we enjoyed on the ocean-view deck. Mark shared his vast local knowledge about sites, plants, and history. The location was idyllic: off the beaten path and on a quiet dead-end street. There is a private trail down to a smooth lava ledge with gorgeous sunrises over the ocean.

The hosts were absolutely great. Half the charm of this place was meeting them. Breakfast was outstanding and definitely a great bonus. The geckos watching and then finishing my breakfast every morning were really something special.
I wouldn't say that it was a negative, for us, but for this location, a car is an absolute essential

Raven and Mark were sincerely welcoming with their home and time. Their knowledge of the local area really enhanced our trip. The breakfasts of fruit and omelettes were fabulous!

Affordable for near the ocean.
The building was not structurally sound. Our room was soiled by a cat.

Ma’ukele Lodge was one of our favourite places to stay during our 3 week tour of Hawaii. Our hosts, Raven and Mark, were so friendly, welcoming and helpful that it felt like staying with old friends rather than at paid accommodation. Our room was charming, quirky and slightly bonkers - we loved it! The Lodge was ideally located for day and night trips to the Hawai’i Volcano National Park and an impromptu walking tour of Fissure 8. The lodge itself was affected by the 2018 Kīlauea volcanic eruption and the short walk down to the black lava beach was quite fascinating. Raven prepared lovely fresh fruit breakfasts which we enjoyed sitting on the balcony in the morning sun and we particularly enjoyed the antics of the numerous green geckos accustomed to feed on the leftover papayas! Brilliant!
Nothing.

A great place to stay for a week (or longer). Great for events, parties, kids, reunions! Our hosts, Raven and Mark, are the best. When we arrived our room was immediately upgraded at no additional cost to us. The bed in our room was extremely comfortable. The mattress had a soft top but was firm overall - no back aches. Billowy pillows, soft sheets/bedding. The mosquito netting was pretty and romantic but we saw no signs of mosquitos. The beds had bedside tables, multiple electric outlets and great reading lamps. Our refrigerator had canned sparkling water, juice, fruit and a few other welcome snacks. The room opened onto a private garden with flowers, birds and singing night frogs - it even had an outdoor bathtub and shower, which I loved. The room had everything our hosts could think of for our comfort - snorkeling gear, sun tan lotion, skin soothing lotion in case you didn’t use sun tan lotion, toothpaste, nice soaps, lots of other products a traveler might need/have forgotten. The towels were plentiful, soft and absorbent. I won’t go on and on about breakfast because so many others already have, but just think fresh tropical fruit, guava bread French toast and all the gecko dining companions your heart can desire. The weather wasn’t the best the week we were on the big island but Raven and Mark had ideas of things we could do and gave us great directions to local attractions. My friend and I are anthropologists/archaeologists and Raven - and especially Mark - had great stories about the culture and history of the area. I just wish we had more time to talk with them. There was shared space, including a kitchen, but we were too tired after returning at the end of the day to take advantage. There were also friendly cats on hand to pet! When we left for the airport our rental car wouldn’t start and Raven saved the day by rounding up a helpful neighbor for a quick jumpstart.
Raven and Mark have shown such attention to guests’ comfort that I can’t think of a single thing that could have been better. Raven noticed my boyfriend’s attempts to dry out some wet, dirty clothes and even did his laundry!!

Loved everything. Been traveling for 30 years, and never found a place that checked every box for our awesome stay. If I was going to renew my vows or suggest a wedding venue this would be the place. Our suite was so comfortable and with a outside tub and shower with hot water was like being in the garden of Eden, with all the perks. We will be back!!!

Nice view and once get through forest to water, it's beautiful.
Breakfast was fresh and delicious.
Downstairs room looked spacious & nice.
Didn't know there were several cats, that go into room and with pet allergies, it's an issue. Didn't have privacy and every time we left the room Raven and cats were in room and door opened. Wish Raven was properly dressed when she was preparing/serving/talking to us, was very uncomfortable. Room we stayed in had several issues and need(ed) repairs. House is not bohemian it's falling apart with catch-all posters/drapery/hanging material on walls and ceiling where it's falling. Room had odor from mildew or cat urine.

Delicious fresh breakfast accompanied by geckos overlooking the ocean.
Be sure to put on bug spray if you’re prone to getting mosquito bites and plan on spending time outside.

The hosts were extremely welcoming and very helpful when we were looking for things to do on the island. Raven's breakfast and coffee each morning was a treat! Location is extremely beautiful, right on the ocean on cooled lava flats.
On the website it said air conditioning and this was part of why we booked here, however when we arrived there was only a fan to use instead of an actual air conditioning unit. It was still lovely, but it was different than we expected and made it hard for us some nights since we both sleep hot!

I liked the night sky and the singing frogs. Hosts were great!
A little far from 'all the action' of Pahoa

This b&b is a little paradise, with the true essence of Hawaiian generosity and hospitality. Immersed in nature and lava, exotic birds, geckos, trees, and a view on the ocean, everything is there for serenity. Raven is going beyond expectations for her guests, her breakfasts are heavenly, fresh fruits everyday while watching the ocean and the palm trees.
I had my private patio, it’s very pretty and looked like a botanical garden. For this room, the shower and bath are in the garden, I really enjoyed it, it’s a nice experience.
I also would recommend to ask Mark to give you a tour of the area, he is very knowledgeable about Hawaii, from each type of flower and tree to all the history, and facts about lava/volcano and more.
Few things: very clean. Phone reception is ok. Recommend having a car. Uber are not so easy to get in this area and taxis are extremely expensive. Corner shop nearby.

Breakfast was great. The fruit bowls, French toast, and breadfruit were delicious. Eating with the Geckos was a unique experience. Raven and Mark were terrific hosts. Being able to walk to the old lava flows and ocean in just a minute or two and watching the sunset was awesome. The bed we slept in was comfortable. It was clean.
The room we stayed in was not air conditioned. So in the afternoon and early evening the room was warm to hot. It cooled off during the night but made it uncomfortable when trying to go to sleep. The overhead and oscillating fans helped. One side of the screen doors did not lock but that goes with the “openness” of the entire place. We used the outside shower which is secluded but still outside so it took a bit to get used to it. On a positive note, if the outside light was not used the stars were magnificent. It did not bother us but there are a “lot” of frogs chirping at night.

What a wonderful stay! A cozy room with three double beds in a paradisiacal tropical garden. Raven and Mark are two super hosts full of stories. The breakfast would befit a Michelin star restaurant!

Location is amazing if you want a quiet, peaceful setting. Steps from the ocean on a lava beach. Geckos come visit every morning! One morning we had 30+

Location was great; we thought it was so cool to be so close to the water.
What's not to like? Great stay. Everything was as expected.

Amazing generous hosts, beautiful relaxing huge family suite with private garden area. Outdoor bath was so relaxing. Nice bedding, towels, bathrobes. Delicious fruit for breakfast. Fruit and drinks and snacks in room.
A little tricky to find as is a hidden gem location. Print up the directions before heading there is a good idea.

Fantastic place to stay. We spent there 3 days of our honeymoon. The owners Raven and Mark are great people (Raven makes really good breakfasts which you can eat together with a group of cute, little geckos). The bath and shover under sky in the garden are another great things to experience.

I cannot say how perfect our stay at Ma’ukele Lodge was this past week. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous! The room is decorated to perfection. The beds are ere comfortable and the breakfasts were delicious! Raven and Mark were amazing hosts…shared so much information about the island with us. Absolutely loved our stay and wished we could have stayed longer! Cannot recommend highly enough!
The bug bites! 😂

absolutely everything. Raven and her husband where very nice. You really feel right at home. The beach was a 30 second walk. Just an hour from the volcano park.
loved everything

Graceful hosts. Rooms are well appointed with everything that you could need. Beautiful surroundings, great breakfast. Sea shore is beautiful with lava flow now solidified. Raven is the perfect hostess. Her husband is from a Hawaiian family, knows the place inside out - has maps and ideas about what to do. Plays good music..
A little pricey.

Beautiful, well-kept grounds. Mark and Raven were exceptional, engaging hosts. Fantastic tropical breakfasts each morning on a lovely porch.
We liked it all. No issues whatsoever.

Magical location and wonderful hosts.
A few bugs but understandable given how the property is immersed in nature.

Nice hosts and earthy feel.
A bit isolated, so come prepared.

Absolutely phenomenal stay! Raven and Mark went way beyond my expectations in terms of what they offered as part of the B&B. When they learned it was our babymoon, they put us in the Hawaiian suite with private garden, outdoor shower and tub. The fridge had delicious Hawaiian fruits, snacks, and drinks. It was very considerate of them to gift us some baby soap as well.
Mark cut open a fresh coconut for us to try. We appreciated all the advice about what to do in the area as well as the account of the recent lava flow and how it impacted the area. If you're looking for a B&B, do not hesitate to stay here! Highly recommend!

Absolutely breathtaking location and great hosts. The room was amazing and the outdoor shower was absolutely the best. It's an amazing location out of the way of everything and I just enjoyed hanging out by the water or in the garden. We enjoyed every minute. Thank you for all the help on ideas on activities for our trip and all the interesting information. Went above and beyond.
Nothing.
