Occidental Paradise Dambulla is a true nature lover's retreat. Nestled by a serene lake and surrounded by lush greenery, the calm atmosphere is perfect for relaxation. The spacious villas are a delight, offering peace and privacy. The staff is helpful, ensuring a warm and welcoming experience. Food is delicious and reasonable.
With minor improvements, this property could truly shine. The air conditioning can be quieter, cleanliness could be enhanced, and spa staff could show more courtesy. Small upgrades will unlock immense value, elevating the overall experience. Despite this, the hotel’s tranquil setting and natural beauty make it a wonderful getaway.

I found a great deal on Booking.com and booked two nights here for my birthday. Since this was marketed as a 5-star hotel, I decided to splurge a bit and treat myself! I did tons of research and read every review, as I didn’t want to leave things like wifi, AC, and hot showers up to chance—especially after seeing how some other hotels struggled with that.
Pros:
- They upgraded me—WOW! I've never been upgraded before! I originally booked a deluxe room, but they gave me an entire duplex villa all to myself. I can’t thank them enough.
- On my birthday, they surprised me by decorating my bed with “Happy Birthday” written in flowers and palm leaves. After being out the whole day, it was such a lovely surprise to come back to!
- I had dinner at their restaurant on my birthday night. I was celebrating solo, but the entire staff came up, brought a birthday cake, and sang Happy Birthday. Huge thanks to Mr. Jerald, Rasika, Ishan, Damith, Dananjaya, Nishani, Lakshara, and Campiha (sorry for butchering your names!).
- Shoutout to the front desk team, especially Raj and a kind lady whose name starts with D. I’d see them morning and night, and it felt like they worked 24/7! 😂
- The staff overall were incredibly kind and attentive, always smiling. Their hospitality made my stay.
- The pool had a nice partial view of the mountain, adding to the peaceful, nature-filled vibe of the resort.
- The whole place just connects you to nature—it’s perfect for a honeymoon or a getaway with family and friends. There’s even an adventure area at the back for some extra fun with friends.
- My room was huge, the wifi was stable, the AC worked great, and there was a hot shower. The bathroom was also really spacious! Since it’s in the middle of the forest, I did see 1-2 harmless insects, but that’s to be expected.
Pro tip: Wake up early to enjoy the morning breeze, the peaceful quiet, and the luxury of being in this amazing place. I absolutely loved it here!
These are not exactly cons. These didn’t ruin my stay at all, just small things to note.
- Sri Lanka has short power outages now and then, but they only last 2-3 minutes, so nothing major.
- The resort is a bit off the road, maybe 10-15 minutes from the main road, but that’s part of its charm, being surrounded by nature.
- The food was so-so, not the best I’ve had but not bad either. They offer buffets in the morning and evening, plus a bar. If you have the chance, it might be easier to eat outside before heading back, since it’s a bit taxing to go out again once you're settled in the resort.

Excellent staff! Every single member was very helpful and responsive.
Great location. Lovely architecture and setup. Serene surrounding.
I visited the property under a promotion (40% off).
For that amount, it is worth it. For the full price, I doubt.
The kettles in the rooms were broken. And the bathroom fittings were also not in the best condition.
There was a corporate event with outdoor music which pretty much killed the whole vibe of the hotel's serenity.

The tour we did to see the sunset was nice and the guide was helpful and nice with us.
First of all one of the receptionist there shout at my mom telling her that she could not stay with me in the room because I booked just for one person. I did it like that by mistake so I went to speak with her and she told me that I she had to speak with her manager to find a solution.
Then I checked the prices in booking and it was the same price for one or two people. She told me that I had to pay 40$ more for my mother what I did in the end just to avoid any argument.
I paid with 100$ for that and she gave me the rest of the money in their currency which I calculate to find out that she gave me 20$ less… disgusting!
I told her and before I finish my sentence she started to give me more notes so it was premeditated from the very beginning.
I never had such a bad stay in a hotel, I felt tricked all the time…
I’m not gonna describe that girl because I have more sense of shame that her…

Service; The staff were wonderful, all very pleasant and welcoming. Rajitha and Dilini in the restaurant were lovely and very accommodating. With the current situation in Sri Lanka there were power cuts to reserve energy, the staff called me to inform re the turning off power to ensure I was ready (e.g had hot water). Power was always restored before night fall
Room; the rooms was great and had everything I needed. The room was beautifully clean and spelt wonderfully fresh every day. There were a couple of damaged floor boards under the air con, but the hotel are actively renovating rooms duration off season (screens are up so guests are protected from the works which is great)
Facilities; the pool is lovely. The spa was brilliant- a lovely massage. There is a pool bar, main bar and pool pizzeria all closed during off season.
The restaurant is brilliant, great value for money, however, you are reliant on the hotel for food - with Dambulla Town 20 minutes away by vehicle with the nearest food places.

Friendly staff. Especially Nishankar (Restaurent Supervisor) was very helpful and guided us properly.
Spa was awesome and the service provided by the spa staff was excellent and professional. Sorry i dont remember her name.
Location was perfect. Calm and quiet. Highly recommended.
We didnt have phone signal much and the wifi connection was very poor.
Bath tub wasnt there and Iron was not provided but we were asked to give to the laundry which would take hours and it closes after 6pm.
