Daher mein Fazit: Nie wieder. In keinem Fall zu empfehlen!

We spent three nights only in the hotel in June 2023. The rooms were clean, but simply and functionally furnished. The furniture looked to be new. The receptionist leaves the keys at the reception desk for guests arriving late afternoon or at night. The hotel gave me the impression of a family-style hotel. The breakfasts, which are included in the price, were buffet style and they were very good.
I had a room with windows towards the main road, which is very near to the hotel and the traffic was quite disturbing, especially the agricultural machines traveling to the fields and back.

Lovely location in the middle of a picturesque Swiss village. Parking is free. Nice balcony to enjoy the sun with a pleasant view over aare valley.
Staff lacking in friendliness and customer orientation. We booked a room with a double bed, only to find out that it was two single beds pushed together. Upon asking whether they gave us the right room, there was no apology for the mishap but the question if we have “a problem” with those beds. Stating our preference for a double bed they gave us a room with one, albeit a *very* small room. No discount for the very small room was offered.
Breakfast was lackluster, the brioche was old and choice was limited. Coffee was offered from a modern machine but nothing like a cappuccino was offered, and instead of fresh milk there was coffee creamer.
Shower in bathroom came with a curtain that was either clinging to your body or hanging outside the shower. Weights at the curtain would have helped.

Breakfast was fine, location good. Staff were mostly friendly. Bed very comfy.
There was a self check in which we were unaware of and we were left waiting in the reception for 15mins before we received some sort of attention.
Very tiny bedroom.
There was a communal outdoor area directly outside our bedroom window where other guests were smoking and wafting into our room at night. Not Pleasant at all!
Unsafe table in the very small bedroom was just a trestle and loose top. We kept walking into it. Could be dangerous.

Clean, quiet area
This hotel has serious issues with communication. What I booked was a single room on site at the Restaurant Hirschen, and what I got was a 4-room apartment 15 minutes walk away. This was very dishonest and inconvenient for me because the research institute I was working at is a 20 min walk from the Restaurant Hirschen but a 40 min walk from the apartment. I have to work at night where there are not always available taxis. When I contacted the restaurant and asked to be moved to the hotel, I received only a “sorry, no room” type of response and no apology. I would strongly recommend the hotel advertise its rooms correctly and provide what was actually booked. Also, upon checkin there was no one at reception, just my room key on a piece of paper with instructions on how to walk to the other apartment… but I had no 4G coverage in Switzerland so this is not a foolproof approach.

After complaining about the room and the bed we got a roomy apartment with an excellent double bed.
Kitchen corner and bathroom was also OK.
First we've got a worn, small room with a broken bed, but later this issue got solved. The breakfast could have been more plentiful.

I got a very large room, that was clean and quiet. The place is located in the centre of Villigen, very close to the Paul Scherrer Institute (15 min on foot or 3 min via public transportation). Staff was friendly and helpful.
The breakfast could have been a bit better, with more variety.

The hotel is conveniently located in Villigen, a sleepy village 10 minutes away from the Basel-Zurich highway. Staff was friendly, and the room was above expectations (we reserved 2 double rooms, but received a 3-bedroom apartment in the adjacent building). Breakfast was varied, fresh, and delicious.
Restaurant service was limited due to holidays, and will soon undergo a change of ownership, and will be run with a more simplified weekly menu. Village has few other options for dining out, but the pizza in the nearby Barbarossa Food World was amazing.
