Great place to stay with a comfortable room in a central location. Nice and attentive staff along with some incredible food. There is a car park next to the hotel with reserved spaces which was easy to access.
Breakfast was to order and we had a table reserved for this, all of which was included in the stay and very good value. They also run a restaurant in the evening with some excellent food.
There’s plenty of food/pubs locally with some good walks and attractions such as Abraham Heights which the hotel also provided a discount for. Matlock was a nice 30 min walk where you can find plenty of bars/pubs too.
Some draft beers in the hotel would be nice.

It’s a beautiful historic and quirky property. Beautiful features kept in place.

Beautiful period rooms, lovely staff at breakfast.
£110 for an unmanned hotel is a little extreme,if we wanted self catering, that’s what we would have booked. Also being told on arrival that there is no contactable staff after 10pm and if we were to need Someone in an emergency, then it would be a case of calling 999-I found this dumbfounding. So in the case of a possible power cut,you would be expected to either stay in the dark all night,or contact our emergency services? There is no bar or anyone to get any assistance….the feeling that there was absolutely no security was also concerning, people are literally left to their own devices…..for £110? This seems deeply unjust and absolutely not worth the money. The previous owners were wonderful, attentive and kind,on this stay we were greeted by a young lady, making us aware we had disrupted her from her hair appointment (we only knocked on early to if we could leave our bag there) All in all, dissapointing and we will not be returning.

The room was very nice, the breakfast was good.
The room was cold to begin with but warmed up later. The bath plug didn’t quite fit properly so the water ran out slowly.

The location of the hotel was amazing, we could walk to nearby attractions. Our room was so charming and comfortable. It was a perfect getaway even in winter. Very cozy and warm. Breakfast was delicious and had many options to choose from. The parking was an added bonus. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

Hodgkinson's Hotel is situated on a busy main road in the centre of Matlock Bath. There is limited parking for 4 cars in an adjacent road and up a steep hill. This is manageable if you have a good level of fitness. You can drop your bags at the hotel first, although you will be on double yellow lines and blocking the road. The Hotel is a beautiful character building, both inside and out, so understandably the interior can look a bit tired in places.
At the time of our visit, the hotel was being operated as a B&B, with the owner, Chris, only appearing when the bell is rung. There was also no chef, so the meals were cooked by Chris himself. The food was "Okay". Not something that you would complain about. But it was pretty bland and not restaurant standard. I agree with other reviews, that this hotel is more of a B&B. Fortunately, there are some really nice restaurants within walking distance, where you can enjoy really good food at reasonable prices. On leaving we were overcharged by £36. But once we brought this to Chris's attention, the issue was swiftly rectified.

Full of interesting memorabilia.
The restaurant is small & cosy with a nice snug area for pre dinner drinks.
The quality of the food is excellent.
Parking is very limited.

I booked only this week for 2 nights bed and breakfast over New Year... the hotel is beautiful - traditional Victorian. We enjoyed the New Years Eve dinner too and the festive menu also. The food was exceptional. We will definitely return, maybe in Spring/Summer.

absolutely beautiful period property

Very attractive old hotel with many historical features intact. Great breakfasts! Comfy lounge for an evening drink with open fire. Very warm rooms especially for a cold weekend.
4.6
We loved everything, the hotel was very clean, comfortable staff were very hospitable, and the food was excellent, we are definitely going back in the near future, thank you to Chris, Zoe and your lovely staff
We couldn't find any faults, apart from where the car park was and only enough room for about 5 cars, but even that wasn't an issue.

The decor off the hotel, the superior double room, breakfast, staff.
The break was,nt long enough for us the hotel could not fibd a fault.
4.6
The hotel is quirky and fabulous just as we had expected, the breakfasts were very nice too with plenty of choice.
The customer service very good, with all staff being very attentive and courteous.
The shower was a little tight to be honest but given that in the Victorian era showers didn't exist, we were happy to have one! :) This is a minor detail, it was a delight to stay in this very authentic hotel and would absolutely stay again.

Location was excellent
Bar prices quite high
