Bamboo Garden is just the perfect place to stay. The house is lovely and the garden and pool are just wonderful, a haven in the heat of the afternoon and away from the busy harbour area. Jo couldn't have been more helpful and made our stay all the more enjoyable. It is so easy to access many parts of the island. A car really is essential if you want to explore. Hope to be back at some stage!

This place is awesome! Close to everything yet seemingly far away. The property is beautiful. Joanne is very nice and accommodating. I highly recommend going unless you’re planning on going when we’re going back because that’s problematic!!!!

The Bamboo Cottage could be called the Garden of Eden! What a lovely, secluded paradise. The cottage itself was a spacious, well appointed, very clean two-bedroom, two-bath space with a full kitchen. The porch was what we enjoyed most. We had morning coffee watching the hummingbirds, finches and bananquits join us for breakfast. A BBQ grill was convenient (we prepped food for a boat charter). The pool was also a great amenity. Joanne was the perfect host as she provided info and help but was never intrusive. She knows Antigua!
An A+ recommendation.

Bamboo Garden was the perfect Caribbean getaway. A spacious, clean house, allowing two couples to have their own private bedroom and bathroom on either side of the main living area. Speaking of which, we were mostly outside, on the comfortable porch or beside the pool, surrounded by beautiful gardens and birdsong. Joanne is also the perfect host. We would definitely come again.

Had a great stay at Joanne's house.
Staying at the property feels like living in a tropical garden. A truly unique place.
The location is very close to a couple of outstanding beaches, grocery stores, and many good restaurants (the service everywhere is super slow, allocate 2 to 3 hours for a dinner). The beach chairs are provided, although there is no cooler to take to the beach. The car is a must of course and an SUV is preferred, not so much for the roads but to bring beach chairs to the beaches as some of the chairs are not foldable.
The apartment is spacious for a family of 4 and provides all the necessary amenities. The A/C (in the bedrooms only) work great. The living room/kitchen/dining areas can get a bit warm though. There are no washer and dryer but Joanne provides towel service when requested.
Joanne is a superb host, very accommodating and is ready to help with any question or concern you might have. She will go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable.

This is the second time we have stayed here and it was even better then the first. Joanne is the best! We only had a few days due to schedule and Joanne gave us a list of all the new places since the last time we were there so we could maximize our stay. Already thinking of our next stay.

This property was divine. The vibe was just relaxing and laid back. We spent as much time as possible in the garden and pool. It was as if in a world all by yourself. Joanne has done an amazing job with the grounds, making it secluded and lots of comfortable sitting areas in garden and by pool. Kitchen well stocked and beds comfortable. Joanne gave the best recommendations. Would visit this property again and again.

Stayed 11 nights at Bamboo Cottage, really beautiful property and amazing garden. The host Joanne was very welcoming and very helpful with what to do on the island, best places to etc. Would definitely go back there, is best to hire a car but as restaurants and beach not too far hiring a taxi would be good too.

Beautiful, tropical garden and fabulous host
We had a magical stay in Antigua at Joanne's Bamboo Garden. It is a beautiful garden with a lovely well kept private pool. The house has everything you need, comfortable beds, air con in the bedrooms and a lovely relaxed feel. The house is well located within 10 minutes of English Harbour (by car).
Joanne was extremely helpful and made us feel very welcome. We had a wonderful stay and would like to like to visit again. Thank you Joanne for helping make our trip so special.

Oasis in Antigua
Call it oasis, call it paradise, call it haven. It’s all true. This is what ‘Bamboo Garden’ really is. Joanne created this lush beautiful sanctuary in the middle of nowhere, but close enough to everywhere you want to go. Highly recommended this peaceful place to come back to after exploring the island, spending a day at the beach, or just hanging out and relax by the pool.
PS
I wouldn’t recommend D’s car rental. There’re many other reliable car rental agencies on the island.

Bamboo Garden
Our family of four really enjoyed our stay at the Bamboo Garden! The grounds are lovely and well kept and staying in the house gives you the feel of a traditional Caribbean cottage will all of the modern amenities. The photo's accurately reflect the actual cottage well. Joanne was a very helpful with advice and suggestions regarding what to do / see and potential places to eat while in Antigua, but also let us have our own space. Thank you Joanne for sharing your amazing garden with us and for suggesting the Xtreme Boat tour, it was one of the highlights of the trip! We will definitely return should we visit Antigua again.

Paradise Getaway!
The Bamboo Garden has all the amenities we needed. It was just right for a family of 4. Joanne is an amazing host. Upon arrival during the week of Christmas, we were greeted with a platter of fruits, cheeses, crackers, pitas and homemade hummus. She also provided us with a bottle of wine, a couple of beers and sorrel. The house is spacious with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The beds came equipped with mosquito nets, not that we really needed them. Each room had a remote air conditioning, ceiling fans and standing fans. The second room, contained 2 beds (one queen sized and one single). The kitchen is fully equipped with all the items you would need to prepare meals, as we cooked everyday. There was also a picnic basket which we used to carry to the beach with us. Pigeon beach is an amazing beach in the English Harbour. Be sure to check it. We didn’t rent a car as we were apprehensive driving on the other side of the road and it helped that Joanne connected us with a taxi driver named Jason who was very helpful and very responsive. I added him on WhatsApp and he was always available immediately. If he was not available to take us to our destination, he would make sure that another taxi was available to pick us up. It’s $10 USD to get us to Pigeon Beach and back. The house also has a nice patio with a hammock. The pool was also a nice treat! Joanne keeps a bookshelf full of books that I was able to take advantage of. This place is honestly a paradise retreat. You can tell that Joanne put in a lot of work into it, lots of plants and trees that surround it! It’s very private - although there is another structure on the property (cottage) and there was a couple staying there, we didn’t even see them because of all the trees that covered both houses. Joanne keeps a greenhouse and turtles in the adjacent lot. Be sure to keep your food scraps in another bin that you’re provided with as these will be fed to her turtles. I can’t say enough about this place other than I’m sure we will be back! Joanne, thanks so much - from Tina, Adisa, Aidan and Cristina from Toronto,

Great place to stay!!
We, two couples, stayed in Joanne’s beautiful place for a week in August. Joanne was great, couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating and the house, garden and pool were terrific. We spent most afternoons in the pool before trying out local places for dinner. Thank you Joanne for making our stay enjoyable. Please visit us when you next come to New Zealand.

Wounderful
As we drove up the driveway we were a bit unsure as it was a bit rough, but once we stepped inside the gates our jaw hit the floor. The entire setup is beyond belief, it is as if you had your own resort just to yourself! I can not say enough about how great the place was. Joanne is always available without being intrusive. I will 100% return here and wish I was there now!

Wonderful stay in Antigua
Bamboo Gardens is an idyllic spot. The large porch looks out on a fantastic garden and pristine swimming pool. (The jasmine was just coming into bloom when we were there and the fragrance was lovely). The rooms are nicely furnished with comfortable beds in each of the two bedrooms. The kitchen is adequately equipped for cooking (and grilling outside) which is good since restaurants in the area are somewhat pricey. Finding the place for the first time was somewhat challenging but when we arrived Joanne had left a pitcher of delicious rum punch and a platter of hummus, crackers and fruit. Joanne was very friendly and very knowledgable about the island. The humming bird feeder on the porch attracts lots of humming and other pretty birds. The local tortoise population provides for an unusual but efficient food scrap disposal.

A little piece of heaven.
Everything that everyone has written about Bamboo Garden is true but even better. We are two older, very active cousins from New England, and we have fallen in love with the house and the island. It really is the perfect place. An oasis of beauty and relaxation. Joanne has created a little piece of heaven. The house is charming, great kitchen,
Beds, and the porch is where you will want to spend your time. We felt very safe on the island and drove everywhere. Catherine’s beach restaurant is a must. I can’t think of a more wonderful spot for relaxing or adventure. Zip lining was a hoot.

An oasis of tranquility on a fabulous island
We were two couples, staying in the two bedroom property for a week in February - our second visit to Antigua but our friends' first visit. Bamboo Garden is set back from the main road along a fairly bumpy track (not untypical for the island - don't expect perfectly surfaced roads anywhere and especially on side roads!). We had a rented Jeep for the week so it was no problem to drive, but we also walked to and from the property several times - take a torch if intending to walk in the dark.
The property itself is set within large and totally secure gardens which Joanne, the owner, has created over the past few decades and are absolutely stunning. Most of the garden and certainly the house is beautifully shady and therefore relatively cool, but there is always a spot around the pool to sunbathe in. The small pool is lovely and clean. The setting is so tranquil, the night air is filled with only the wonderful sounds of the local tree frogs and other wildlife. The house itself is fabulous - clean, homely, well-equipped and there was a delicious welcome platter, some cold beers and a jug of rum punch in the fridge for our arrival!
Both bedrooms had ceiling fans and these were quite adequate to keep the bedrooms cool - likewise the living room. The verandah was a perfect place to eat meals, relax and chat or lie on the hammock with a book. Joanne lives on the first floor and was often available to offer advice about anything we needed. The pet tortoises and Joanne's dogs were charming and the dogs (mostly in the separate self-contained garden) were an extra security reassurance.
There are some restaurants/bars within easy walking distance (Papa's by the Sea is fabulous), but the walk into English Harbour where most bars and restaurants are is about a 20-30 minute walk - and that feels further in the heat of the day. A taxi for 4 into EH was ECD $20 each way, so not very expensive. Buses also seem to take you anywhere you want.
Joanne was a great hostess, communication was excellent, the property fabulous and the garden just divine. We loved our stay here and thoroughly recommend this holiday accommodation. Thanks for having us, Joanne!

A nice retreat in Falmouth Harbour
Joanne has worked hard to make the house, grounds and pool area very welcoming. This is the first Caribbean island that I visited that air conditioning was not needed to sleep at night. The house is close to the Falmouth Harbour area, which has plenty of restaurant options. There are two local grocery stores that have staples, but I recommend using one of the larger grocery stores on your way in from the airport. Darkwood Beach is the best on the island and an easy drive. Locals are very friendly. There is an ice cream place 5 minutes away.

Beautiful gardens, comfortable house, great pool, nice location, great host.
Joanne does a really nice job creating a great experience for visitors to Antigua. Her property is beautiful, and creates a very peaceful setting for a really relaxing vacation experience. She was also around to provide helpful tips for us on things to see and places to eat etc...
The house was very clean and comfortable. The garden is really amazing, with a lot of beautiful palms and flowing plants - attracting birds and coqui frogs that make soothing peeping sounds at night. The pool on the property was nice - partially shapes by the garden trees and with clean lovely water.
To rent this place, I would strongly recommend renting a car, as there is a lot to see in the southern part of the island, but some of the beaches and things to see are a mile or two away (or more). There is a small market store and a few restaurants within walking distance, but having a rental car opened up a lot more for us to see in the Falmouth/English Harbour area.
Overall, I think this may not be the place for some people who want the "all-inclusive resort" experience, but for us - this was a much better experience. It made us feel more like we could pretend that we lived on the island for a week - a delightful slice of paradise. We would happily go back and rent this place again. I felt that the price was very reasonable for what we got.

Joanne is lovely and her property is a beautiful oasis!
We had an amazing time! The house was perfect for us. My girlfriend and I brought our teenagers and it worked out great! With the two rooms at different sides of the house we had our own space, and with the large kitchen and main room we never felt crowded. The outside porch was my favourite, sitting couches tables and a cozy hammock. The tortoises in a fenced area were fun to feed your compost too. The pool was a real treat, very clean and always the right temperature to cool off in. We felt like we were in our own resort.
Joanne was amazing! She always made sure we knew where we were going and was always so helpful with information. Always a friendly smile and honestly feel i have a new beautiful friend in her. We will definitely be back. Thanks for an amazing trip Joanne! Kind regards Jenny

Pure Magic!
The only hesitation I might have about giving Joanne's transcendent cottage 5 stars is the thought of it being overrun by other, less worthy travelers than me. Joanne has built an elegant spacious wooden house and furnished it with great taste and care, on an island where fine furniture is likely hard to find. Then she built a garden and swimming pool around it that is absolute pure magic, stunning palms, bouganvillia etc. You can sit by the pool all day and be in the prettiest spot in Antigua. Restaurants, bakeries and shops all 5 minutes walk away. Finally, Joanne, is helpful, charming, quirky, wonderful.

Best holiday ever!
What an amazing place this is, the garden alone is one of the most beautiful I have ever been in. Bamboo Garden is so special, serene, private and wonderfully relaxing. The house is so comfortable and perfectly setup for 2 couples to share and still have their own space.
Antigua is beautiful and everyone was so friendly and helpful, this is also a perfect location in which to do your island touring then come home and hang out by the pool. We also love being in the Falmouth/English Harbour area, lots of good restaurants, hiking, beautiful beaches, snorkling & lots of nice people. This was our third visit and we will defineatly be back again. Thank you so much Joanne.

If you are looking for a paradise within paradise, this is the place for you!! When you arrive you may think, OH My what have we done. Step into Joanne's personally created, beautiful lush garden home and you will be reassured you chose the absolute BEST vacation spot. We stayed at Bamboo Cottage which was beautifully decorated with so many personal touches. Upon arrival there was cracker/cheese/fruit platter chilled in the fridge waiting for us. Joanne made homemade hummus which was out of this world!! Joanne is a WONDERFUL and gracious host and was always willing to assist in any way possible. We enjoyed seeing and speaking with Joanne whenever we chose. She was a wealth of knowledge helping us find our way around the island and recommending great dining choices. Our favorites were OJ'S and Papa's. You also have to go to Shirley Heights on Sunday for the BBQ and island music. We will DEFINITELY be going back and bringing friends with us. Thank you so much, Joanne for the BEST vacation!

We pride ourselves in never travelling to the same place twice. But we had to make an exception for Antigua and the Bamboo House. After our stay in 2015 we immediately started plans to return this year. Joanne has created a hidden garden paradise. We found that it provided perfect combination of vacation comfort and island living.. Conveniently located near English Harbor, it is close to shops, restaurants, beaches (we like Darkwood Beach--Hi, Marlon!), sunsets at Shirley Heights, and historical sites. A rental car is almost a necessity, but can be easily arranged before arrival. We ate in several times during our stay, the patio dining is lovely. The kitchen is fully furnished and there is a new, nice outside grill. Joanne is very knowledgeable about the island, and gives great advice about trips and excursions. In some cases she can get a better price by making arrangements for you, so make sure to ask. We highly reccomend.

I had stayed at Joannes gorgeous property 5 years with my mother and brother and had such good memories that I decided to return again this year with my girl friend. The villa and its breathtaking bamboo garden was even better than i remembered. Hidden away just off the main road to the best location of Antigua, Falmouth Harbour, you felt perfectly isolated, whilst still being very close to the best restaurants/beaches and bars of the island. The holiday was magical and relaxing, and when I return to Antigua I will definitely return to this villa again. Strongly recommended.

We visited this villa in April of this year during the Antigua sailing week and we had a great time. The villa was very well located just off the main road going into Falmouth Harbour, 5 mins in a taxi or on the bus. The villa was set in a lush tropical garden that was so peaceful and it was great to spend time on the large veranda having our meals and just relaxing watching and listening to the birds, the pool and BBQ were great added benefits. Joanne, the owner, who lives above the villa was such a great host, very informative and friendly and always around if you needed her. The villa was very comfortable, spacious and clean and it had everything we wanted as two couples, including beach towels. Within 5 minutes walk of the villa we found a lovely restaurant and bar, Papas and a small marina with a bar and restaurant, there was also Sweet T's, a local road side bar/restaurant that we visited several times for lunch, great chicken wings. We would definitely recommend this villa to all our friends and we would again like to thank Joanne for being such a gracious host.

Other reviews have said it all really. Bamboo house is a wonderfully relaxing base for exploring the Island. The L-shaped veranda is perfect for leisurely breakfasts spent watching the Caribs (hummingbirds) feed. We loved the hammock too - a great place for getting some reading in before being gently rocked to sleep! We'd recommend a hire car for getting around the Island despite Antigua being very small. Joanne was a great host - always there to help and offer advice but at the same time respecting our privacy. Others have commented about some difficulty in locating Bamboo house but we found Joanne's instructions to be spot on. It is true that the roads leading to the property are rough but then the same goes for parts of the main roads - you really do have to be very alert when driving for sudden gaps in the road. Thoroughly recommended.

We stayed at the Bamboo house this year.It was very relaxing and familiar as we stayed at the cottage last year. The house was comfortable as we had friends visiting for a few days to see Joanne's beautiful property and the island of Antigua.Joanne was once again very helpful with her tips and info on the island. We hope to return in the near future. L&K

We recently spent a week at Bamboo House with our friends. The house was ideal for the four of us, with two lovely bedrooms en suite. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and the veranda was a lovely place to sit, drink, eat and relax - surrounded by Joanne's beautiful garden and the constant sound of the local birds. The pool area was ideal, with some shade - again peaceful. Although we shared the pool with the cottage, it generally felt it was just ours. The short road to the cottage was a bit rough, but well worth it once we arrived and our host Joanne was attentive but not intrusive. I would happily visit Bamboo House again.

What a beautiful place to stay. Great accommodation. We stayed in the big house as 4 of us went, we had the most lovely time. The garden is beautiful and the pool is great. we really loved everything about this place and can't wait to go back as a pair one day and stay in the small bungalow.
5 minute walk to the brilliant bar that was sweetees, with great ice-cream. Also the hotel at the end of the drive across the road was great for a late drink on the way back from dinners. Was literally an amazing holiday. Joanne is so helpful, brilliant and always around if you need something or on the end of the phone. We got fresh salad from her which she grows and enjoyed watching the tortoises come out at night, along with the hummingbirds and other birds on the balcony every day. Perfect paradise and cant wait to go back one day.

We spent Christmas 2014 at Bamboo House and the only way to summarise our ten days at Bamboo House is to say it was "Perfect" on every level.
Bamboo House is hidden away in a quiet area but just a few minutes walk from a small but adequate super market, a local bar and ice cream parlour and a pleasant beach front hotel with a bar and restaurant. A short drive takes you into the much livelier bar and restaurant area of Falmouth Harbour and a little further down the road there is English Harbour so there is no shortage of bars, shops and restaurants. We prefer local shops, bars and restaurants but there are also smart places for a special night out.
The house is Caribbean in style with well designed outdoor spaces to relax or eat overlooking the lawns and the miniature rainforest that Joanne has created in the garden. The pool is plenty big enough to enjoy a swim and the garden is thoughtfully designed to provide total seclusion. The wildlife is worth a mention including humming birds that come to feed at the house.
The house is large, very well equipped and comfortably furnished so, as two couples, we always had our own space as well as good spots to meet and socialise. We quickly felt at home and the house design and furnishing created the "island life" that we wanted - no concrete boxes and minimalistic furniture here.
Joanne is the perfect host, attentive and friendly when you need her but respectful of your privacy the rest of the time. She is a mine of information on the island and her initial briefing was brilliant as she took the time to understand what we liked and disliked and was able to guide us in all the right directions.
We hired a 4x4 and, if you want to get to all the beaches, this is essential, especially the beautiful Rendezvous Bay which is worth at least one day but there are plenty of fabulous beaches that are easily accessed by any hire car and Bamboo House is in the ideal location to explore the best of the island's beaches.
We know the Caribbean very well and Antigua is one of our favourite islands, a great mix of good scenery, lovely beaches and charming people, and St John's is a nice town that is a great place for a day off the beach. Bamboo House and the gorgeous little cottage that is at the other end of the garden are the perfect place to stay and we are definitely going back.
Joanne, thank you for your hospitality, you have created a very special place and we hope to see you again before too long.
