A disappointing stay due to the discomfort caused by the strong smell of smoke.

The flat was roomy and light. The facilities were good. The location was good.

The flat stank of smoke. The smell of was evident as soon as we entered the flat. We had understood the apartment to be non-smoking. However, this policy is clearly not being enforced - and little or nothing has been done to rid the flat of the stench. Despite us leaving the balcony doors open all night, which naturally meant that we spent a very cold first evening, it proved impossible to rid ourselves of the smell. It was in the main room, the bedroom, the sofa, the rugs, the cushions, the pillows, and the bedding. There was evidence of cigarette stains on the sofa, and the fact that this burn had not been remedied has clearly not helped discourage smokers from lighting up inside. As soon as we returned home we had to wash absolutely everything we took with us. Our children are not used to smoking environments and found the smell of smoke coming from their mattress extremely unpleasant. This made for two very difficult nights. I would have liked to have left a positive review, but sadly feel unable. I also would feel unhappy leaving an overly negative review, as I realize that some may not be put off by the smell. However, if you do not like the smell of smoke then I would strongly suggest finding alternative accommodation. I wrote to the owner of the flat immediately upon our return four days ago. I have yet to receive a reply. For the record, here are some of the suggestions I made: "I would also kindly suggest that you undertake a thorough deep clean of all furniture and fabrics in the room, put no-smoking signs throughout, remove the ashtray from the balcony to make it clear that smokers are not welcome, and enforce the non-smoking policy more thoroughly through the imposition of a penalty should there be evidence of guests having smoked." If the owner is interested in providing the non-smoking environment advertised in the description, I hope very much that they will consider the above. I would also suggest that they reply to guests'...
