Recently renovated building with some lovely period features. There was a limited light evening meal choice offered which we were happy with as it saved us walking back into town. The food was freshly prepared to order and worth waiting for. Breakfast was adequate and served to us by friendly staff.
The owner, who checked us in, was abrupt to the point of rudeness and we did not feel welcome at all. We met his wife a little later and she was very chatty and friendly towards us. The shower doors in our room were very flimsy and the washbasin was a tiny hand washing sink which was too small to be useful. We found the rather cheap cutlery uncomfortable to use.

What an amazing little Scottish gem this is. A beautiful country house nestled in the most glorious gardens and decorated to such a high standard throughout that the owners should be rightly very proud of.
When booking Accommodation, if you have pets, one of the requirements is that it is ‘dog friendly’ There is a huge difference between being dog ‘tolerant’ and dog ‘friendly’ ….. the Balcary House falls into the latter spades ! This certainly ticks that box in all areas and our dogs were made hugely welcome with rooms specifically assigned as dog friendly….. There was even an enclosed paddock to allow the dogs a good run as well … something not always available
Fabulous residents areas with a well stocked bar and wonderful owners who are happy to chat. Breakfast was superb and I thoroughly recommend the porridge😋 . The lodges that are specifically designed to enable dogs to stay with you are spacious, beautifully decorated with a tasteful design everything was spotless clean.
Thank you so much for making our trip across the borders so pleasant we will certainly be back
Nothing - it was perfect

Breakfast ..cereals yogurt, cooked…fresh and quality ingredients
Breakfast staff lovely..esp Bob!
Quiet and peaceful.
Liked the bottled water.
Sheet kept coming off mattress during night…was too small. Staff told.
Quality of towels and sheets inferior for standard of hotel.
No mirror near an electric socket to blow dry hair.
Kettle lead doesn’t reach from table to socket.
Mirror in bathroom sited over toilet so awkward for husband to shave
Nowhere to set toiletries in shower
Bedside lights very dim…no good for reading in bed. Did tell owner who said nothing he could do.

Great location. Beautifully decorated. Lovely cooked to order breakfast.
Lack of drawer space in the bedroom. Rooms looked amazing but not very practical for the user. A few drawers would make all the difference. Also in our room the mirror was placed over the toilet rather than the sink so was not practical, had to straddle the toilet to get close to the mirror. Could have benefited from a slightly larger sink too.

Spacious nicely furnished room, big bathroom.
Nice sitting area and bar.
Good breakfast included.
Nice wooded grounds.
Plenty of parking.
Quite a long walk from the town centre (but handy for the lovely park just opposite).

Beautiful grounds and comfy friendly hotel. Great for a relaxed few days away.
Not a massive fan of the breakfasts, but that really is knit picking :-)

Lovely location on a hillside with a beautiful garden & mature trees - a grand old house stylishly decorated
Everything was good!

Breakfast was first rate - good range of options. Coffee could have been a little stronger to our taste so an option for strong coffee in addition to the perfectly acceptable one we had would be a bonus.
Fine period property tastefully furnished in keeping with the architecture - an inviting ambiance.
No issues that I can think of a well run establishment.

The Balcary is a beautiful house in Hawick, Scotland, with such a wonderful history. It dates back to the 1880s. It was also a home for children during WWII. It has such beautiful details throughout. The room we stayed in was huge and had a beautiful large bathroom. The staff were wonderful. They made sure if I needed anything while I was sick to let them know. I would suggest a stay, but beware of hearing things that may not be there, such as the Ghosts/Spirits that also reside here. I would love to stay here again the next time I make a trip to Hawick.

Good breakfast. Rooms were warm.
Not very Christmassy, a large tree in the hallway would have been nice.
Plastic flowers on the breakfast table!!
Breakfast room too much like a school canteen, lacked ambiance.
Small bath towels!

We did not like anything about this hotel. The manager was unhelpful and refused to move us to a suitable room. We left next morning and forfeited our booking.
Allocated room was an incapacited guest type room in a cold annex with very poor, less than three star, facilities. No standard en-suite fixtures. Manager said the room allocation was down to what Booking had reserved and he refused to move us to a standard room. We told him we would be leaving in the morning. Next day they fobbed us off with a story that if we cancelled our second day with Booking he would credit us with a refund. Did not work as it is not possible to cancel the second half of a booking that has been activated.

Very small bathroom sink and no place to store anything except on toilet.

Very clean, room was nice and everything relatively new.
Partner was kept all all night by the occupant in the adjoining rooms snoring, the lodge rooms could do with some soundproofing. Breakfast was ok but not great.

Beautiful, clean, tastefully decorated hotel.Lovely gardens, view from room 5 is so nice.Really comfortable room, very nice quality decor, well maintained with attention to detail.A great sized room and bathroom.Loved the balcony which i am sure when weather is good would be great.Easy parking right at door, close to town centre (walkable) A nice breakfast cooked to order but would prefer a pot of coffee to save disturbing staff as cups are small ,nice friendly staff at breakfast.
Extremely cold "welcome" Gent ( i assume the owner) barely spoke, never smiled, made us feel uncomfortable and an inconvenience rather than guests. No mention of breakfast times, wifi code, where breakfast would be served etc.I thought i would find this in guest information book in room but this has just one sheet with history of building and a couple of booklets with local attractions and nothing else.Used the 2 two tea bags and milk to make us each a cup of tea on arrival and before going out asked for breakfast time, wifi code and could we possibly have a few more tea bags and milk, these were supposed to be left outside room for us, still don't know if another guest picked these up or whether they were there in the first place, didn't fancy another encounter with the gent downstairs so went without.I didn't feel this was a big ask.Would really like to have returned and reccomended but this is not what i would expect from anyone in the hospitality industry when it is their business.

Great location for visiting the Borders. Excellent breakfast in lovely dining room. The lounge and bar area were well furnished and had good views over the garden. Ample parking. David and Sue took care of our needs and were caring hosts. The history of the house was interesting as it once was a Barnardo's Home for children and there was an album in the lounge showing pictures of the period. When we booked there was only one room available, Lodge One. The two lodges are very new and well equipped but on any future visit would prefer a bedroom within the main house with a garden view. All in all served our purposes very well. Would stay again in the future if we were to visit this part of Scotland.

Beautiful room and bathroom, obviously very recently refurbed. Lovely well kept grounds, Very nice lounge and bar area. Dog friendly which makes a pleasant change
Only very limited dinner offering. No lift and no offer of assistance with luggage. The room is stunning but not nearly enough sockets. Thankfully i always travel with four gang extension cable as i have to plug a CPAP machine in next to the bed due to sleep apnoia. Nowhere to plug in phone or computer. Mirror is far too high above dressing table. When seated could only see top of my head. As per many hotels these days, too few milks on tea tray. Four little plastic pots not nearly enough and who wants to go back down to ask for more ? Could do with a table in bathroom for toilet bag. Nowhere to put them. No lighting at dressing table

The breakfast was lovely and it was hot which was a bonus because sometimes you go to these places and the breakfasts are only luke warm.
The House was absolutely beautiful and the staff where lovely.
We where in the room with the four poster bed and although it was a beautiful room and had a chaise lounge , it was too low for my wife to get onto because she has mobility issues and there was no chair in the room which would have come in extremely handy for her, we had to borrow the chair on the landing so she had something comfortable to sit on.
The mattress on the bed was really hard which interrupted our sleep through the night, it was hard to get a good nights sleep.
The mattress is personal taste because in all honesty, it might suit other guests.
