About this cottage rental
Seacliff is a charming three-bedroom, one level, shabby-chic summer cottage. It is privately situated in the quiet village of Starboard Cove on Maine’s pristine Downeast coastline. The large porch just feet from the water awaits your early (or late) morning coffee, and another deck with steps leading down to the rock covered beach allows direct access to the water’s edge. Seacliff’s front yard is the Atlantic Ocean and dramatic open ocean and coastal island views await you. If the fog comes in, sit back with a good book and enjoy the warmth and crackle of the expansive coastal rock fireplace. Although you can’t see it, you’ll also hear the plaintive sound of Libby Lighthouse . . . life is good.
Just a few steps from the main cottage is Downeast, a cozy and charming one room guest cottage, fully equipped with a kitchenette, queen size bed and a three-quarter bath. Downeast can be rented along with Seacliff for an additional fee if you have lots of family/guests.
Part of the allure of Machias is its obstinate resistance to giving up its local charm. Although you’ll find a large well-equipped grocery store, you won’t find a Wal-Mart. And while you’ll find a McDonald’s and a Dunkin Donuts, you won’t find a Chucky Cheese. There is a Rite-Aid, bank, several gas stations, and some great local family restaurants that you won’t want to miss!
From Seacliff, you can follow a winding dirt road that starts right after Seacliff and leads to idyllic views and a natural gravel bar that leads to Starboard Island. Although Starboard Island is privately owned, the walk on the bar is well worth the time. Also, located just a mile from Seacliff is one of the most unusual beaches anywhere, Jasper Beach. The multicolored pebbles of Jasper Beach paint an exquisite and rare coastline.
In addition, there are many day trip options in the area including: West Quoddy Head in Lubec Maine (45 minute drive from Seacliff) which is home to West Quoddy Head Light -- the only candy-striped lighthouse in the U.S.A., Campabello Island, Canada and East Quoddy Head (less than an hour from Seacliff) where you can take the International Bridge to Campabello Island, Canada and visit Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s summer “cottage.” And then there’s the world famous Acadia National Park and Mt Desert Island (two hours from Seacliff).
In order to make this a pleasant rental for all smoking is not allowed inside the cottage.

Our stay was amazing! It's even better then the pictures. The little beach in front was perfect with the most beautiful rocks. We loved walking down to the sandbar at low tide. We will be back !

We so much enjoyed our stay at Seacliff. The peacefulness was priceless and the view of Cutler, Machias Bay, and Starboard Island were mesmerizing. You could just sit on either deck or at dining area table for hours and stare at the ocean. Everything you need in the kitchen to prepare any type of meal for two and/or a group. The only downside was having to leave....seriously.

If you’re looking for solitude…. The cottage has plenty of everything, pillows, towels, excellent beds! Comfortable & charming. The fireplace was perfect in getting chill off. Coffee out on the covered porch to the sound of lobster boats motoring out for the day and a call of a loon. Lovely walk out to the sandbar at low tide…. Spent a lot of time on the Rocky beach. ♥️

Very beautiful. The house and deck with the fire pit was great. It is a very secluded area. I went to Matt the lobster guy a lot. There is not a lot of restaurants, but cooking lobster was easy, and cheap.
Would recommend this place to people who don’t like alot of crowds.

We were greeted by our hosts and immediately realized we were in for a treat. They were attentive and thorough as they walked us around. The cottage was well-organized, beautifully located, and everything in it was placed to perfection. I have a chef’s kitchen at home and their kitchen lacked of nothing. We spent one of the best vacations of our lives there. We hope to return some day. We are grateful for having this glorious experience.

Other family! My 5 year old daughter especially loves the loft ! This home books quickly a year or more in advance! We will be back, but unsure how soon! Thanks Mary and bill!

Our stay was absolutely perfect! The pictures of the property are great but it is even more beautiful in person! The cottage was equipped with everything we needed, with stores and restaurants close enough to stock up on groceries or to catch a bite. We absolutely fell in love with the cottage and the area. We are already planning our trip back to Seacliff next year.

In rereading the other reviews I think every superlative that could have been used has been and deservedly so. Although we saw very little sun (not one sunrise or sunset) we loved every moment at Seacliff. The location right on the ocean listening to the waves was such a balm for too busy minds. We, also, made very good use of the great fireplace on those chilly nights and found everything we could possibly need in the kitchen to stay home and enjoy meals. We would have loved to eat outside but not to be this time. This was the first time we had stayed in this area and found it to be a perfect location to resupply the kitchen and travel north or south on Rt. 1 to the too many to mention walking choices along the coast. There are 3 conservancies with great trails that are described online: Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Downeast Coastal Conservancy And Cobscook Shores. We have been traveling to this area since the 80's and still never tire of the beauty of this coast and woods. Staying at Seacliff was such a perfect, really perfect, place to return to each evening but sadly, we had to leave.

We stayed for a week and it definitely was not enough time. Whether you just want to relax at the cottage or use it as a base camp to explore the area, you will have a wonderful time here.
We went somewhere everyday and would come back to the cabin in the evening and relax with a fire, either on the deck by the beach or the beautiful fireplace inside.
We went to Acadia and rented e-bikes one day. We visited St John and Campobello in Canada on different days. The rest of the days we spent exploring other cities along the coast and hiking.
Mary was very easy to get ahold of and we never had any issues at the property. If you are like me and have always wanted to spend some time overlooking the ocean in Maine, I can’t recommend this place enough!!

Wow, what a fantastic home, right on the ocean. Cabin and grounds exactly as described. Fireplace is amazing, we are from Florida so we made good use of it! Just a relaxing week in some of the most beautiful parts of Maine. Explore the Bold Coast or relax with a book, choice is yours. Best week we have had a in a ling time, thank you so much for sharing your little slice of paradise with us.

Seacliffe was beautiful! Thank you Mary and Bill for renting your lovely beach home to us. There was nothing that we needed that you did not provide. The cottage was spotless, the kitchen very well stocked, there were sheets and plenty of comfy towels, and plenty of firewood for our nightly bonfires. The view was spectacular and the ocean sounds lulled us to sleep at night. We thoroughly enjoyed our very own rock beach. We also walked a few times to the fresh Maine stand a mile away and brought back delicious baked goods. We day tripped to Lubec and stopped in Bar Harbor on the way home.
It was a wonderful first time trip to Maine!

A Fantastic Week
We were looking for somewhere beautiful and quiet. We found it here. Perfect place to read, relax, and enjoy life. We enjoyed our twice daily visits from a seal—who we named Ralph. If you like remote, quiet, and beautiful, this is the place. Beautiful home.

My dog and I had a terrific week at Seacliff. The location is stunning and the cottage was one of the cleanest, best maintained and best stocked properties we’ve ever stayed at. Can’t wait to return.

Wonderful Location
The property was absolutely gorgeous. The views were spectacular and there was so much to do right on the property. We roasted hot dogs on the fire pit, warmed up the cottage a few nights with the fireplace, had morning coffee on the porch in the rocking chairs. We are a big “rocking” family, the rocks right in front of the property we some of the best in the area. Everyday we picked a different hike/ beach to go to. So much fun. Thank you Mary and Bill for the great stay!

Fantastic home!
However, I left 94 degree Orlando and arrived in Machiasport at 33 degree. Yowza. It’s still cold in May!
The fireplace and tea kettle was put to immediate and non-stop use. lol. A wonderful and relaxing week.

A Peaceful Getaway
A comfortable home, perfect space for our 4 adults, nice bathrooms, efficient kitchen, everything we needed was on hand. And total privacy. We appreciated the nice, new gas grill, the gas lobster pot set-up, the indoor fireplace (amazing), and the little fire pit on the deck overlooking the water. We used the Downeast Cabin too, which gave our grown son a little space of his own. Chose Seacliff because of the proximity to our other son who lives and works in Machias, and he could bring his dogs when he came to visit. They did fine there too! We did a little sightseeing, some walks around the area, a lot of hiking at state parks, and just relaxing on the property.

Spring Stay at Seacliff
We spent much of May 2021 at Seacliff. It has everything in abundance. Lot's of dry firewood! And really, everything you could possibly need including beautiful sunrises. Very much right on the water with a tremendous porch overlooking it. Have many wonderful photos but don't see any place in VIRBO to submit them.

Maine Escape
We were welcomed into this Machaisport cottage the moment we entered Sea Cliff and began our week-long stay. Everything was set up as if to say, "Your comfort is our priority." Special attention to thoughtful hospitality was evident in every room.
My husband and I as well as my parents had no problem filling 7 days with fun, hiking, sight seeing, rock collecting and most importantly - relaxing!!
Bill and Mary gave quick responses to our questions and were so caring.

The best spot in Maine!
What a beautiful location and charming cottage! This is our family's second time staying here and we are just as pleased as we were 6 years ago. The location of the cottage is perfect, with its beautiful water views from back porch and deck. Morning coffee on the porch in the rocking chairs was a delight, with the sound of the waves on the rocks below. We love that there is a section of beach for rock skipping, hunting for snails and other critters, and just throwing rocks into the ocean (my youngest!). The cottage itself is clean and well furnished with towels, linens, and even extra sweatshirts in the closet for those who didn't bring enough warm clothes for Maine. The kitchen is loaded with pots and pans, bakeware, knives, etc., and even details like marshmallow roasting sticks and corn on the cob holders. There is a handy supply of dry firewood and we had a fire in the fireplace during the chilly evenings. We took some day trips to surrounding areas--45 minutes to Lubec and West Quoddy lighthouse, and 2 hours to Acadia National Park. However, just the serenity of the water, sky, and rocks from this little cottage was what drew us back a second time, and we were not disappointed! (Note: My mother was with us and stayed in the extra guesthouse on the property, and that is an adorable little living space as well. We were very happy to have a "together but separate" vacation experience.)

Cozy, comfy, quiet. Just a beautiful setting whether in sun or fog. We so enjoyed our little seaside getaway. And the hosts were most accommodating. Book this for next year before it’s gone!

Looking forward to next year already
The house, view and location were perfection, exactly what we wanted from our Maine Staycation! We enjoyed sitting on the deck overlooking the water and lighting a fire every night. The porch and rockers were so relaxing and inviting every morning. We didn't want to leave and are counting down to Sept '21.

Beautiful view! Both sunrise and moon-rise across the water morning and evening was to die for! Not to mention stargazing from the deck as well! We were all sad to have to go.The whole family, from newborn to grandparents enjoyed this space immensely. Our young kids loved sleeping in the loft. House was amazingly equipped with literally everything you could ever imagine needing. Anything I packed (just in case) was for naught. Hit the nail on the head for us of a vacation of comfort and convenience but also a back to basics quaint cottage at the idyllic Maine seaside feel!Never seen such a rocky colorful beach like it. We loved walking and exploring for hours. Lots of great memories made. Definitely would book again!

Mom/daughter vacation
My daughter and I get to see each other about once a year. We have, for the past two years, enjoyed our reunion stay at Seacliff. This year it was more a stay vacation but sure enjoyed the time on front porch watching the ocean, seals, birds and boats. Chatting and rocking while the ocean breezes blew softly over us. This cottage is so great and Mary and Bill excellent hosts.

Relaxing at Seacliff
Reflecting on the week at Seacliff, it is an environment where every day allowed us to relax more and more. Foggy or not, I would go out on the deck and enjoy the sound of the waves. If the timing was right with the tides, there is a period when the waves retreat that the pebbles rolling smooth on the other rocks talk to you. Full breakfasts were had each day with Maine wild blueberries, eggs, bagels, sausage or bacon. This was often followed by a walk with me and my wife, but sometimes the kids would also join us. Morning kayak paddles were peaceful. There are plenty of day trip activities, but we spent most of the time at Seacliff. We did visit the candy stripe light and the walk along the coast at the light was well worth the trip.
Best of all, a couple of our kids came up to join us with their boyfriend and girlfriend. This was some of the best times. Lastly, we had a few visits from Sinbad the seal who would sun himself on the rocks out front.
This is an outstanding property, that is well cared for and is in a great location.

Relaxing getaway in a beautiful place
We enjoyed our stay at Seacliff so much, we didn't want to leave. Mary and Bill are fantastic, thoughtful hosts who were easily available if we had any questions. Their cottage has everything you could want to enjoy a relaxing week on the coast. The views are breathtaking and the sound of the water lapping against the stones was so soothing. The night sky was incredible, a blanket of stars and great views of the milky way. Although the cottage offers seclusion, it's not too far from great restaurants like Helen's, and beautiful spots to visit like Reversing Falls and West Quoddy. We couldn't think of a more beautiful place to spend our ten year wedding anniversary. We had a couple of friends join us the last couple days we were there. They can't stop talking about how much they loved it there. We had Whitney, who is so great, deliver lobster right to the cottage. It was perfect. Their grounds are beautifully maintained and there were also lots of beautiful wildflowers and birds to see. We saw hummingbirds, plovers, bald eagles, cedar waxwings, warblers, cormorants and other sea birds, tons of butterflies, seals and so much more. Jasper beach is right down the road, but all the beauty that beach has to offer can also be found right in Seacliffs backyard. A walk down on your private beach and you'll discover beautiful rocks of all different colors. We absolutely loved having our morning coffee out on the deck. It was a perfect and relaxing week there and we can't wait to go back.
