About this cottage rental
The cottage is warm and well appointed, built in uncut river stone to high specs
The dwelling is private and quiet, with no other houses in sight, and is set in it's own large garden area
Insect screens allow the sliding windows to be open on hot nights without moths , mosquitos etc swarming in
Bird life abounds, and the unspoiled ParaPara river ,glimpsed through the trees is 20 steps away.Old gold workings from the 19th century are still visible, and the track up the river follows the water race that provided power for the historic paint factory working in the early days of the colony. There is a network of tracks developed by the host's partner over the last 9 years
5 minutes from marvellous Milnthorpe Park with its bush walks and beach, 10 minutes from the town of Collingwood, and further afield spectacular Wharariki beach and the Westhaven inlet
Or if you're in the mood for perusing arts and crafts, many artisan galleries are nearby, potters, jewellers and glass workers
For a fee of $30.00 I will provide a fire bath for you, good for relaxation and star gazing ! from May to October .Outside of that time we don't light outdoor fires.

The cottage met all our expectations and more! Clean, comfortable and equipped with all the basics that you need. Great to know Reen was available if needed but nice to have such a private spot with a beautiful garden and with a river and tracks on your doorstep. Location for all the other scenic spots and activities was another highlight. One of our best holidays!!

We enjoyed 2 weeks in this special place. Such a joy. Perfect private location, words can’t describe how beautiful it is. Fabulous accommodation with everything you need. Maureen is an excellent host. This feels like our second home and we were so sad to move on. Could not recommend it highly enough and we look forward to the next time

Beautifully designed riverside property. Has everything you need including a washing machine and full kitchen. Cosy lounge with fireplace. Can go for stunning bushwalk starting on a private track at the back of the property. Close to stunning beaches/walks. Highly recommend. Perfect honeymoon spot.

My family had a fantastic weekend staying at the cottage. Had a weekend of cold weather so the open fire was perfect and still got to enjoy many of the walking tracks through the beautiful bush.

The house is beautifully made. There is attention to detail in design and execution in every aspect. For example, the stones for the outer walls were carefully collected from rivers around here over time and chosen for their natural flat faces. No hand shaping. The fire is a dream and there is endless wood - a lot of manuka. Comfy bed and day bed. Big windows. Soft water in the shower (you don’t know what ‘soft water’ means until you have lathered up in a shower like this one), and buckets of it. Smooth kitchen to work in. All appliances are quality, in top condition.
This lovely house is located in a perfect, simple garden in the bush. It is in a big opening that lets sun flood into the house until later in the afternoon. Reen clearly spends a lot of time ‘editing’ the whiteywoood and other vigorous forest denizens from encroaching, from monstering the rengarenga lillies, grass and the verandah.
The result is an artwork that you get to live in. There is a reason why this property gets a straight 5 out of 5 from everyone who stays here, and this is mine.

Exceptional - highly recommended
I fell in love with River Retreat. What a beautifully presented cottage, with so much character, and every little aspect of the stay has been thought through so beautifully. The cosy fire, listening to the river, luxurious bedding, and a fire bath under the stars. This place has Soul. Very possibly one of my most memorable and tranquil getaways. Thank you.

Second stay, even better
This was our second time at this beautiful, peaceful, private cottage in the bush. If possible, it was even better than the first time we were there. So much to do within a 30 minute drive in all directions (tramping, horse riding, Farewell Spit, swimming... etc. etc.) but even better is returning each day to this little piece of heaven by the river. Thank you again Reen.

I can't rate this place highly enough. The setting was absolutely beautiful and oh so good for the soul. It was clean and had everything I needed. Hearing the river at night was absolute bliss and great fun adventuring off to the gorge. Will definitely be back

My partner and I had such a relaxing time at this property. We reflected on our way home to Christchurch, that if we had to be stuck anywhere for three nights due to crappy weather - this would be the place! The photos don't do the lush green environment justice, the views of the bush out every window were sensational. Because of the heavy rain, the river alongside the property was flowing at a fast rate and it was wonderful to listen to. We loved the fireplace, too! The cottage was very well equipped and we could not fault it. Thanks for having us, Maureen. Apologies we couldn't message you when we checked out early on the morning of our departure. Both our phones drowned in the sea doing the Abel Tasman beforehand, and the times we were able to message you, we did so from the library at Takaka! PS. Thanks for the lemons - bonus!
