My family and I recently stayed at Will’s charming Del Mar home, and it was an unforgettable experience! If you appreciate unique, quirky homes with loads of character, this place is perfect for you. The house has a nostalgic 70s vibe with many original features, which we found incredibly charming.
The location is absolutely fantastic. It’s a short walk to the beautiful beach bluffs and close to great local restaurants and coffee shops. We loved taking leisurely strolls to a nearby French bakery for breakfast. The views from the house are stunning, especially from the upper level where you can enjoy breathtaking ocean sunsets.
The house itself is spacious and creatively designed. Each bedroom having its own unique bathroom was a huge plus for our family. The koi ponds added a unique touch, and our animal-loving teen enjoyed feeding the fish every morning.
Will was an exceptional host, always responsive and helpful throughout our stay. His attentiveness and welcoming nature made us feel right at home.
While the house has some signs of age and could be considered “funky” in some aspects, it’s part of its charm. If you’re looking for a sterile, modern hotel experience, this might not be the place for you. However, if you love character-filled homes with history you’ll love staying here.
Overall, we had a fantastic stay!

This is a cool funky place to stay. Funky in a good way. We surf and like cool original houses. The back yard is great for grilling and chilling. Location is fantastic.

If you are looking for a kooky fun abode to stay in while in Del Mar this is it!
If you are a clean freak, this is not for you! Not that it's dirty, but its hasn't been updated, so has some film of age.
Luckily we are the former and not the latter.
This is a charming house built in the 70's, with many unique features. The top room is incredibly relaxing with a full view of the ocean. The light system is retro space age. The kitchen is adequate, with accumulated utensils from over the years. The outside koi ponds are inventive, and if you have pets at home and miss them can transfer that to koi feed and care. Will is incredibly responsive and helpful.
Each bedroom truly does have a bathroom, so easy to share with friends/family from afar. Beds are a big deal to us (back issues) - the upstairs bed has a nice firm mattress, and the downstairs rooms less firm, so options. The bed linens are premium quality.
Would stay again, thank you Will!

Do you love unique, memorable stays? Do you like to support creative individuals who share their own spaces, rather than staying in crowded and generic hotels? If so, you will love Will's place! (As another reviewer said, it is like staying at your cool uncle's house :-) You can enjoy finding all the hand-built wood, tile and stained glass details — and see ocean-horizon sunsets and peek-a-boo views of surfers right from the dining table! The neighborhood above the cliffs in Del Mar is quieter and less crowded than being on the lower part of the beach – which we liked coming back to after busy days of “touristing”. You can easily walk to great restaurants a few blocks from the house, including a delicious French bakery. The location and vibe worked great for us. Although we enjoyed seeing surfers climbing straight down to the beach barefoot with their boards, we took the longer, more mellow routes through town or on the path along the railroad tracks, all being in our 50s and 60s. A main focus of our trip was taking a differently-abled relative to the Zoo and Safari Park for her birthday – and she loved seeing all the fish in the koi ponds each morning. They helped our animal theme come to life every day! Will was kind, welcoming and easy to communicate with - thank you for a great stay!

6 of us spent 6 nights here while checking our granddaughter in at UCSD. Her take on the house: "its like your cool uncles house"! The location is perfect, the view from the main floor of the house is spectacular. The outside room, the backyard with all the koi ponds and outdoor kitchen area were so awesome we found ourselves always gravitating there. We had ample room to spread out. The house was clean and tidy, linens were clean. Communication with Will was super easy. We felt very comfortable and relaxed here and will definitely stay again if/when we come back as a group.

This house is in a great location - walking distance to beach bluffs (and beach if you are a walker - about 3/4 of a mile) and town. The views are unbelievable. All the windows make for an almost panoramic view of the ocean and awesome sunsets. The outside ponds and waterfall are really cool. Will was very responsive when we reached out to him with questions.
There were however some things that were not ideal. The biggest issue we had was being comfortable when we slept. The bed itself was comfortable but we were quite warm due to some ventilation issues and no air conditioning. I lived in SD for some years with no AC and never had an issue unless there was a heat wave. The living room would get very warm in the evening after the sun had been beating in the room, but then was very cool at night. I ended up sleeping on the coach a few nights since the bedroom was very warm.
The house was definitely clean but there was a very musty smell in the house, particularly in the entry hallway. The bikes had very rusty chains so we never used them but it was nice to have beach chairs and boogie boards available. We did purchase a beach umbrella and left it there for future use.
We still had a great time at the house - but thought people should be aware of these things.

This property is unique, quirky and cool. The outdoor sitting and cooking areas are beautiful and relaxing. The bedrooms are very comfortable (although the upstairs bed is a bit hard). But the upstairs living and kitchen areas were the highlight with such a beautiful view of the sunset and ocean. Although you cannot see the beach, it is in walking distance. A lovely, creative, wonderfully cool home. Although the downstairs is handicapped accessible with walk in shower, the upstairs is not.

The house is in an amazing location; walk to the overlook of the beach, walk to coffee shops and restaurants, and a short drive to other near by communities. Amazing views and very spacious. A well equipped and large outdoor kitchen. Awesome architecture!

We enjoyed our stay, but this home is different and may not be for everyone. The stairs could be a problem with small children and anyone with mobility issues. If you are looking for a comfortable, different place with ocean views in a beautiful neighborhood, this is worth a visit.

Our family really enjoyed our stay at Will’s unique home. Plenty of room for the 5 of us. Really convenient having 3 bathrooms. We especially loved the view from the upstairs living area and spent a lot of time on the balcony overlooking the ocean and beautiful sunsets every night. The outdoor living area and kitchen are charming with the koi ponds. Didn’t get a chance to use the outdoor kitchen, however, because it was a little chilly. Will was a fantastic host and very responsive. Location to beach and downtown Del Mar can’t be beat!

This was our second stay in this home. We especially enjoyed the upper level balcony with a view of the ocean; the ocean views from the living/dining/kitchen areas; the quiet setting; the proximity (ten minute walk) to Del Mar beach; and the series of interconnected koi ponds both in the back and in an enclosed indoor-outdoor room. A very desirable place to stay.

William has resorted my my faith in VRBO. He was so easy to deal with. No check out requests/demands, Direct communication, effortless, check in process. I highly recommend this property for adults.
The view from the main level is breathtaking. The outdoor kitchen was perfect for our group.
The koi ponds are gorgeous, but probably not ideal for small children. Great spot for anyone looking to enjoy north county.

Stunning location and unique and beautiful place. This home has everything you need to stay comfortably, cook, relax enjoying the ocean views, take day trips down to the beach, and outdoor entertaining. The host was easy to reach and friendly. A great spot in Del Mar!

With an expansive view of the ocean from the upstairs living/dining room and outdoor deck, this property has interesting, unusual features including an extensive series of koi ponds extending into an enclosed outdoor space. The master king bed is especially comfortable. Del mar beach is a ten minute walk away.

Great view and location. Will responded quickly to anything we needed, even lighting the outdoor oven to cook our Thanksgiving turkey.

Excellent location, and the house itself is good too. The backyard is something special. The host has been very responsive.
All in all, this is a great place to stay.

Other than a hiccup upon arrival and waiting occupy and to unpack, everything was great. Will, the owner, certainly went out of his way to correct the problem and stayed in contact as a courtesy which was most appreciated. Hoping to rent again in the future. There was no property manager but owner responded quickly. Good vibrations felt by all. Kindest regards, Stephanie Stone-Stinson

Amazing views
We had an excellent stay! The views are stunning and Will has provided binoculars to see dolphins, surfers, etc. It is an easy walk into town to enjoy some shopping or dinner. The outside kitchen was great and a lovely space to enjoy dinner. Will was excellent with communicating and was a great host. We would love to stay again!

Great location and view of the ocean. The house is comfortable and has everything you need, and the back yard is great for hanging out. Short walk to the cliff walk overlooking the beach. We would definitely stay here again.

Renters Beware
This VRBO listing is totally outdated. The pictures are very misleading, and the description of the property is also. It is obvious that the posted pictures are from 10 years ago when the property was first listed.
The only descriptions that are accurate are the address and the fact that it has three bedrooms. The upstairs bed is so firm that my husband has to sleep on the sofa.
The “walk to the beach” is down a 30 ft. cliff (unless you walk 9 blocks north to 15th Street).
The “beach toys” are broken (two boogie boards, one with no leash) and the beach chairs are rusty and unsuitable for use. The bicycles were in the best shape of anything in the back yard.
The house and yard need a good, deep cleaning. The kitchen cupboards and bathroom cabinets were crammed full of leftovers from previous guests, including used toothbrushes and loofas. The outdoor kitchen has great potential, but also needs a deep cleaning, and the dishwasher needs to be properly installed and functional. The back yard is cluttered with old equipment of some sort which was covered with green tarps.
I relied on the pictures and the posted reviews. I’m not sure what the reviewers were expecting, but our experience wasn’t even close. I have rented VRBO properties in the past, but I will be very leery about renting a VRBO property again in the future.

Eclectic, but perfect for our needs
The house is very unique, the backyard is cool and relaxing and the front deck had a nice view. The only complaint is there were some areas that are a little dusty. Lots of interesting design concepts. Kitchen was pretty well equipped. The steam shower was out of order. The cat was adorable!

Location, location, location
Many years ago, my grandfather built a very functional cabin on a lake and filled it with all the things he loved, that made him happy, and that were functional for a summer cottage in rural Wisconsin. Functional, individual, and unique. I say this only to provide context for my review, which will focus on the things I appreciated about this unique and unexpected rental property. It feels very much like owner either built or extensively remodeled a property that brings him a great deal of pride and satisfaction, with expansive ocean and sunset views from the narrow rooftop patio, and filled it with things that bring him joy: landscaped koi ponds, personal artwork, and custom cabinetry. The location is as described in other reviews as being the end home on a quiet street perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean (but not a good way to access the beach). It's an easy walk to downtown Del Mar, Torrey Pines State Recreation area and Powerhouse Park with miles of walkable beach to explore safely without climbing a cliff side. The kitchen is cluttered but functional. We didn't attempt to use any of the outdoor grills but enjoyed the backyard patio with it's many areas to curl up with a book, listen to the waterfalls in the koi ponds or hang out with the very friendly cat.
This is a functional, unique, funky and comfortable property but I too was unsettled by the numerous - and undisclosed - security cameras that are all over the outdoor part of the home. The space is loved and lived in and the location is exceptional. But you're clearly staying in someone's home and not a cookie cutter condo or vacation rental.

Wonderful Place
Unique home in the heart of Del Mar! The host ,Will, scrambled to accommodate an early arrival, brought over additional beach toys and bicycle locks, had some great stories about the design and build of this unique home with Koi ponds!

Love the place. Close to the ocean with a nice view.

We told the owner we would be raring late at night. The key was supposed to be under the door mat. It wasn’t. There were no exterior lights and no key. We called the owner. No answer. We went to a hotel at 2 am.
The following morning I booked another rental. The owner called at 9:30 and insisted there was a key. He was rude and augmentative. The only concession he offered was a free night at the end of our stay.
Don’t rent from this person

Great House - weird encounters
The house looked just like the pictures. Great location, cool outdoor kitchen, and a lot of space for our family. We enjoyed the house and the eclectic decor. There are a couple things I would want to know if I was going to rent it.
- 12+ security cameras surrounding the house. One that was in the backyard living space that we covered for privacy.
- the cat is fed by the owner - he came unannounced and sat in the garage while feeding titanium. This scared us - he came at 10pm. Notification would have been nice.
- arriving we didn’t have instructions or access to the house. Come to find out it was under the mat. Thankfully we found it since we didn’t hear from the owner two hours after contacting him.
- there are no working bikes If you plan on using them.
We liked the house and location but felt a little unsettled during our stay.

Vacation in Del Mar July 5-13,2020
We Loved the backyard, and the outdoor kitchen. Our favorite part of this experience. We Spent a lot of time back there. The koi ponds were great and nice to hear the running water. The room with the couches and waterfall and fish in the room was nice also for morning coffee. We enjoyed watching the sunset at the ocean on the little porch outside the living room. My adult kids could get down the cliff to the ocean there during their jog, but too difficult for myself and 4 year old especially if you had a lot of beach things. So we drove to the city beach drop Off (close by) and then parked on the street. We were so thankful that beach was open during this corona time. Appreciated having some sand toys, chairs and boards There to take to the beach.
The beds were comfortable and the rooms nice. It was so nice to have parking for our 2 cars at the place as it was hard finding street parking.
We had a wonderful vacation with the family. We would go back again.

Unique home, beautiful location
We had a wonderfully relaxing vacation! We enjoyed the home's location and the town of Del Mar. On Saturday morning we walked down to the Farmer's Market and bought our fruits and vegetables for the week. The home has plenty of room and great space for gathering as a family. We loved eating at the kitchen table while enjoying the sunset as well as having lunch on the patio which always stayed nice and cool on the warmer days. My kids loved spending time with Ti, the cat.
The hike down the cliff to the ocean was a little challenging but the kids loved it. The beach was very private which we loved!
Thank you for sharing your home with us Will!

Unique House
This house is very unique and fun to stay in. Loved the outdoor kitchen and koi ponds, plus the bluffs over the ocean at the end of the street. Having three bathrooms was super convenient. The location is great and only a five minute drive to shopping, restaurants, the grocery store, and the beach. We loved having the cat around and he was not intrusive, but was very sweet and friendly. The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our trip very much.

Property could have been a little cleaner when we arrived, but we tidied up and all was good. The property and location is excellent. Really enjoyed our stay. Kudos to the outdoor patio and kitchen.

Unusual house in Del Mar
Very unusual house with more "stuff" than necessary in every drawer in kitchen Hard to find what you were looking for. Did not like the shower "room" Avoided using it. Everything gets wet when you do. Which means we had one less bath facilities than we expected. Not a handy house to live in, but we enjoyed our family time together and eating on the patio.
