About this house rental
DATES NOW AVAILABLE IN JUNE AND JULY 2024 DUE TO RECENT CANCELLATION
Our charming 130-year old 2-bedroomed home, bright, welcoming and beautifully renovated, sits above the village of Howth, overlooking Howth Harbour and Ireland's Eye, the iconic island outside the harbor, just 9 miles from Dublin city center.
Howth is the scenic and recreational jewel of the Dublin area, sitting in a hilly peninsula on the north side of Dublin Bay with stunning views of the bay to the south and the coast line to the north. The harbor, with its two popular piers, includes a working fishing port as well as a large marina, and is an important sailing venue. The peninsula has a wide array of wonderful scenic walking paths over the hills and around the cliffs, and is popular with birdwatchers.
We believe that our house was built in or before 1895, but it has been extended and totally renovated, and includes all modern amenities. It is bright and fresh, with 2 bedrooms that can comfortably sleep 4 people, full bathroom, living room and a bright fully-fitted kitchen / dining room overlooking the garden. Total floor area is approx 1,000 sq ft. The garden includes a deck / patio and offers views of Howth Harbor and Ireland’s Eye. The front of the house has 2 parking spaces.
The house is 300 yards from Howth Village, including shops, church and bus service to the center of Dublin; 0.4 miles from Howth Harbour; 0.7 miles (12 minute walk) from the DART rapid transit rail station serving the center of Dublin and southern areas of the city; and 8.9 miles from Dublin city center.
Howth has 2 fine golf courses, numerous excellent restaurants, and the 15th century Howth Castle which includes its famed wild rhododendron gardens, which are open to the public in summer, and the National Transport Museum of Ireland. As can be expected in a fishing port, many of the restaurants are particularly noted for fine seafood. Howth also has several well-known pubs, including the Abbey Tavern, which is renowned nationally for Irish folk and traditional music, and is only 5 minutes’ walk from our house.
All this within 25 minutes of the center of Dublin!

Our experience at this cottage was incredible. It suited all of our needs. The people in the town are friendly and the city transportation is easy to use! Definitely if you’re thinking of going to Howth - this is a must do!!!

The apartment is spacious and the house is a good starting point for hikes on the coast. Travel to Dublin comfortably with the dart train (1/2 hour). In fact, we were mostly in Howth because of the beautiful coastal walks. Minimarket, pubs and restaurants also within walking distance. Contact with the hosts via email was easy. Thanks to Jane and Peter. We'd love to come back.

We stayed in Howth for nearly three weeks and it was great to have a home from home to return to each day. Location is perfect for walking into Howth and there was everything we needed to cook up a meal and relax in the evening.
Comms were easy and swift with a minor problem with the hot water solved really quickly.
Thanks so much for sharing 1 Balglass rd with our family. We had a memorable holiday

Easy check in and out, comfy beds, well equipped, nice outdoor space, close to everything in Howth. We loved the cliff walks, pubs and deli. Highly recommended.

Cottage was perfect for us. We slept comfortably and everything we needed was there. Just a quick walk to grocery shop and restaurants. Parking was on the property and public transportation is nearby. If we ever visit again, we’d stay there at the Howth cottage for sure!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Howth. The house is in a great location to enjoy the town, hiking, and it is a short train ride into Dublin. I enjoyed waking up to the chorus of birds every morning!

This beautiful house is in Howth, a picturesque Irish village rising above the sea. It is a quick, easy 25 minute Dart train into Dublin, but don't miss out on things to do right in town. We highly recommend the Cliff Walk (and Tiny Hidden Beach). It was a perfect easy hike with spectacular views of the sea. We also enjoyed the weekend market by the train station, and the castle grounds, and the restaurants.
The house itself is great: comfortable beds, everything worked, nice open kitchen, great showers, Netflix on the TV. The location was ideal for us. Walking distance from two grocery shops and a gelato place. We could have walked from the train, but it is uphill, so if you have luggage, keep that in mind. It was no trouble to take a taxi.
Peter and Jane's handbook about the house was so useful. Especially if you are an American, do yourself a favor and read it for all kinds of tips about the house, Howth, and visiting Ireland in general. If you plan to do laundry at the house, there are detailed directions which were super helpful. We left with all clean clothes :) .
Thank you so much to Peter and Jane for allowing us to stay here and making sure we had everything we needed. This weekend has been a true highlight of our trip to Ireland!

The family enjoyed their stay here. Hiking trails just outside the door were a great asset. Just a short walk to the harbour and the Dart station and all the amenities for a pleasent stay near at hand.

This cottage is everything it's listed as and more. Peter and Jane are such gracious hosts. This charming cottage has all the amenities to make your stay very comfortable while exploring Howth and Ireland. Peter provides a very detailed and helpful printout on how all appliances work in the cottage. If there are any questions, a property manager is easily contacted and close by. The cottage is wonderfully positioned at the top of a small incline and has beautiful views of Howth harbor and Ireland's Eye. There are markets and cafes within walking distance and the pubs in Howth are as good as any you will find in Dublin! With the close availability of buses, the train and taxis, you can get almost anywhere in Ireland without renting a vehicle. Adventures are plentiful in Howth, with the beginning of the cliff walk just steps from the cottage, boat trips out to explore Ireland's Eye and nature walks and experiences available. Also, if you're lucky, you will get a glimpse of the harbor seals! You absolutely can't go wrong staying in this cottage while enjoying your "Ireland experience"!

We had a great time staying at Peter and Jane’s cottage. Howth is a charming village with lots of walking and great seafood. Due to my own lack of attention to details, I needed assistance to unlock the front door. The site manager was with us within ten minutes to lend help and Peter touched base via phone.
The cottage is a bit of modern where you want it while still remaining cozy and quaint. We really enjoyed our stay here. Our bed was comfortable and the neighborhood was quiet.
I recommend this cottage for an authentic Irish stay without hesitation. If you are mobility challenged and plan to walk, the uphill walk to the cottage might be a lot.
We loved this cottage and it’s quiet refuge.

Property is situated in a quiet part of Howth, quite high up above the old part of town, clean and tidy if a little tired. Convenient for trips into town for restaurants etc and the Dart, with a steep 15 min walk back up the hill. There is no essential ‘welcome pack’ of basics so be prepared to visit the shop on your first day.
Overall, we had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

My family had the pleasure of staying at Peter & Jane's property for a full month, and are glad we chose this location!
Highlights:
- LOCATION was outstanding; a highly sought after suburb of Dublin, yet (thankfully) a few blocks away from the touristy Harbour Road. We made great use of the local library, grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream shops, etc. For our son there were amazing playgrounds (e.g. St Anne's, Malahide Castle, St Stephen's Green, etc) within a short drive, and we made sure enjoyed the Howth Cliff Walk and Balscadden Bay beach. We rented a car for the full month though still made use of DART on various occasions due to its convenience.
- HOSTS were available & helpful throughout the experience. Thank you Peter & Jane as well as the property manager (Vernoica) for quick responses, and for the very detailed Welcome package.
- AMENITIES worked out great for the length of our stay (1 month), as it was our goal to "settle in" which meant making a lot of use of the kitchen, laundry, and so on. We had some challenges with the effectiveness of the dryer however Peter already has a plan to get it improved. The beds were comfy, the TV & Wifi worked fine, and the place felt quite safe & secure.
On a side-note, many of the photos of the listing are out-of-date (at the time of this review) e.g. the backyard, and some of the interior furniture. Not an issue in any way though still would be good to have the latest & greatest reflected in the photos.

This was a really great house - much nicer than looks in the photos. We had a great stay here with everything we could possibly need and Howth village just a short walk away. Definitely recommend!

Our Father-Son trip to Ireland was a complete success. We chose to stay in Howth, on the peninsula, instead of in Dublin, which was perfect for us as we love golf, hiking and a slower pace.
Communication both before and during our trip with Peter was first-class.
The apartment was very cozy and had a private little garden in the back. Situated on top of a little hill, it is very quiet, but still within easy walking distance of everything one needs - convenience store, grocery store, loads of good restaurants. The official starting point of the Howth Cliff Trail was only a 10 minute walk and multiple golf courses were within a 10 minute drive. We loved it and I hope to one day go back.
Thank you!

Everything was absolutely fantastic with this charming property. From the very start of reserving, chatting with the owners through VRBO messenger, to the last close of the door when leaving it was wonderful. The owners provide such detailed information and are so accommodating. There is plenty of space, the beds were so comfy, huge bonus having a dryer, the walk to town is not bad at all, the walk up the hill got us in shape and burned calories from the delicious fish and chips. We walked to the train station every day to get into Dublin City Center for our tours and it was easily walkable, took about 20 minutes to walk there. If on a scale from 1-10, 10 is best, this property and the property owners get a 100!!!! Thanks for a wonderful first trip to Ireland and your property is charming, spacious, conveniently located, well stocked, and beautiful!

This was a great cottage. The owner gave very good details about everything we needed to know. Checkin was very easy and there was a property manager close by but we didn’t even need assistance with anything. The location is close to local transportation and pubs but be aware that it is an uphill journey from the main part of the village so walking can be a little strenuous but we are 66+ and still made it just fine. Would defiantly stay again.

We love Howth and staying in this cottage made it even better! The cottage was deceptively spacious and airy. Perfect for our family of 4!

Perfect location for time in howth or area. Restaurants, shops and activities within walking distance. House is great, clean, roomy and host sent fantastic booklet on how to operate everything and places to visit, where to eat. Our stay was the best time of our life, and the house and Howth were both spectacular. I loved having coffee at the house, walking to breakfast, doing all the fun things, and having a home base. We highly recommend this place! Our hosts were great!

My daughter and family live in the next town over and her in laws stopped by and were so impressed! It’s open…easy to get to from DART or bus…everything you need for a home away from home!

From the outside the house looks very small and it is a surprise to step inside to a large, open, masterfully designed space. In spite of being part of the village thoroughfare I found the cottage quiet and peaceful. We had everything we needed for cooking and sleeping. The driveway was a challenge to park in and I appreciated the parking instructions. I parked on the road with no problem. We enjoyed our stay.

My partner and I had a very lovely stay in Peter's beautiful house. Everything was exactly as described. The house was perfectly equipped and had everything we needed. The location was also ideal to walk into the town and to always see the beautiful views. Peter also left a very informative booklet that we found very helpful. I can't recommend this house enough and we will definitely be back. Thank you!

We stayed a week at this home and it was perfect. Great layout, extremely clean and had any amenity we needed. The location is really great as well for anyone hoping to experience Howth. Will definitely visit again.

Thank you, Peter and Janet, for sharing your piece of paradise.
As soon as we walked in the door, we felt at home. The kitchen and living room are so open and inviting. The kitchen is bright with lots of windows and is fully equipped - nice modern appliances. The couch is very comfortable and there's a large screen TV. Both bedrooms are large and comfortable with great storage. The bathroom has a great shower and hot water was always available. The back garden deck offers a great view of the church and harbour beyond and is surrounded by pretty plants and bushes.
Very detailed info is provided about operating the various electrical and heating elements, which all worked perfectly.
The local Centra and the Country Market are a 5 minute walk away and provide a large variety of choices for food, beverages and various household needs.
Best part of the property? The relaxed feeling of serenity when you return from your adventures in Howth and surrounding areas. Whether exploring the harbour or cliffs, we found ourselves returning to the house thruout the day for a quick recharge before heading back out to enjoy the great shops, restaurants and pubs in Howth, all within walking distance. Having the DART station so close made it easy for us to visit Dublin and Dun Laoghaire and St. Anne's Park. We will definitely be returning to this property!

Near enough to the little downtown to walk but quiet location. Nice amenities and a supermarket close by. Do the cliff walks! You won’t be disappointed.

I reached out to Peter a couple of times with questions and he was immediately responsive. We really enjoyed the house and its location, not to mention the super comfortable beds.

Great little home for our "turn-around" days as pilgrimage leaders. We needed a place to rest and relax, and do some laundry. This spot provided! Great restaurants and a deli close by -- everything is either up or down a hill. Loved the walking trails. Taxi ride from city centre was more like 45 minutes (vs 20, but maybe due to traffic?) Excellent communication with host, plus host provides additional info and instructions for success. Local contact person was responsive, too. Highly recommend.

Beautiful seaside town. 25 minute train ride to Dublin. Best of both. So nice to return to a relaxing place after a day of adventures.

Charming Cottage in Howth
We stayed in this nice cottage for 4 nights during our two week trip to Ireland. Peter was an excellent host. Everything was clean and check-in process was easy. While the property sits towards the top of a hill, it was only a 15 minute walk to town / harbor area that also has a Starbucks. Along the walk you find nice shops and pubs. Easy to catch a taxi into downtown Dublin or a train station is nearby. Much calmer and a nice alternative to staying in downtown Dublin.

The property better than advertised, and Howth is an unexpected gem. The property is modern and comfortable. We would love to stay there again. The owners are friendly and accessible. It is a ~12m walk down to the Dart station for easy access to Dublin and beyond. If you want a pub at the end of the day, Macneil’s is a 3m walk down the lane, Wednesday night has traditional Irish folk music. There are small stores right next to the pub for supplies. Howth is beautiful and not yet over developed. There are wonderful trails with classic views of the coast, one of the piers is lined with fish markets/restaurants fresh of the trawlers docked on the other side.

Great home in a great location
We loved our stay in Howth. We enjoyed some great hikes nearby with spectacular views. There are lots of food choices within walking distance and trams and buses for easy access into Dublin. Hands down this was the best appointed and most comfortable house we stayed at during our 3 weeks in Scotland and Ireland.

Cute little cottage great location would stay again
The place was charming and we had plenty of room for the 4 of us. Nice shops and pubs within walking distance 25 min from airport or Dublin city center
We were constantly checked on to make sure everything was to our satisfaction
Peter was super helpful and responsive
The guide he made went over everything we would run into or need

A slice of heaven
This was a sentimental journey for us as the house once belonged to my Aunt & Uncle. I hadn’t set foot inside since 1990 but the cottage still has the same charm and fantastic views. Peter and Jane have made outstanding renovations and we just loved every minute of our stay. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for something close to Dublin (about 30 minutes by Dart train) but also wanted a taste of Irish village life.

definite return destination
I could imagine staying here for say..3 months and taking more time exploring each and every nook and cranny of this lovely part of Ireland. Walking down to the pier, picking out a superbly fresh fish and taking it back, and putting it in a pan to cook. (We actually did this. Felt so virtuous. the weather at the beginning of June was spectacular. Only got wet once! And I got to meet the resident harbor seal. I named him whiskers. A definite place to return to.
