About this house rental
The John Hand Black and White House is a national historic landmark house in Cape May - a National historic landmark city. It is oldest house in Cape May. Circa 1690 John Hand led a group of Mayflower Settlers to Cape May from Montauk NY. He brought his and 30 other families to Cape May. They settled on this part of Washington Street because it was the highest point on the island and ideal for farming and whaling. They established the City of Cape May and the first tax records on this house are dated 1710. This is John Hand’s Farm House. This house has been carefully restored by the owners of the popular Cape May vacation house “The Whalers Cottage”. The Black and White House is beautiful, w/ 5 large Bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and 5 star amenities on the inside. It is a perfect place for an exceptionally comfortable beach getaway with a real sense of history. The first floor begins with a beautiful, spacious outdoor front porch with plenty of room for gathering and overlooking historic Washington Street. It is also well lit for that relaxing book at the end of a great day in Cape May. Enter the house from the porch and you will see the original 1700 fireplace anchoring the great room with plenty of comfortable seating and a 65” intelligent flat screen TV. The great room flows openly to the kitchen with brand new appliances, granite counter tops and seating for 12 at the table. You will notice a slight “lean” and the ceilings are a little lower in this part of the house because we were just a little shorter back then! Off the kitchen is a bathroom and separate laundry room with washer and dryer. Finally, the 1st floor master has a king-sized bed, attached full bathroom w/walk in shower and walk in closet
The second floor has 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. The 2nd floor master has a king - sized bed, attached full bathroom with walk in shower and a walk-in closet. The next bedroom on the second floor also has a King-Sized bed with a large closet. The hallway bedroom has a Queen Size bed and a large closet. The final bedroom is a kid’s paradise (but adults will be fine too) and has 1 full bed, 1 twin bed, bunk beds and a loft which includes futons and a 50” intelligent flat screen for gaming. The house sleeps 12 comfortably. Rounding out the upstairs is a full bathroom with both a tub and a walk-in shower. A long hallway has nook seating for reading and relaxing as well. This hallway also has that fun “lean” which is not from too much wine! All of the bedrooms have 42” intelligent flat screen TV’s. It also has upgraded HD Cable and WiFi throughout. The house is decorated in a black and white theme with plenty of accent color to capture what it was like long ago and also to just have fun with a cool theme to hang out in on vacation or just for the weekend.
In addition to the open front porch the house has a large back yard back patio. There is abundant outdoor seating and a gas grill. The Black and White Barn in the back yard was originally built in the late 1800’s and has been restored along with the house. Inside you will find 7-9 bikes , 9-10 chairs, umbrella and a wagon to easily get to and from the beach and town. The driveway has 5 parking spots and one on the street. It's a little snug on the driveway so please park the cars and use the bikes or your feet!
The House is convenient to everything. 10-15 minute walk to both the beach and town (5-minute bike ride). Less than 5-minute walk to Physick Estate and Cape May Tennis Club. At the beginning of the season 8 Beach Tags will be in the house. For clarity these tags belong to our family and we allow use for our guests. If you lose them please replace them with a full season tag as a courtesy to us or the next guest. We will not replace tags lost during the season. Also we do not provide linens and towels we do have pillows and blankets if you choose to use them. As no Cape May owners provide linens and towels multiple great services are available on line with delivery and pick up services. Pillows and blankets can be rented as well. Linens are required to sleep on our beds please for cleanliness and consideration of the next guest.

Loved the porch, the grounds, everything!
The first day we noticed that the Keurig wasnt working. Contacted Rhonda and that afternoon a new one was brought over.
Location on Washington was very convenient.
If there was 1 tiny issue it was that the house sleeps up to 12 (we were 9) but the kitchen only had 8 chairs. A few extra folding chairs would be great. Again, we loved it!!

We recently had the pleasure of staying at the Black and White House in early June. I’d like to credit our perfect weather week but regardless of how that could have played out the home would have been great. The home and property were well suited to hosting our grown children and their families. We all had ample space and could come together with ease for meals, games and relaxing. The porch is private and large with ample seating. The owner was very friendly and gracious with communication. They were generous with amenities and recommendations. We stay in Cape May often and this was our best experience yet. Details given were accurate. The experience was enjoyable from every aspect.

This property was perfect for our gathering. The location was great and the home was very clean. We had a little trouble working the tv (operator error) and the host jumped on Facetime with us! I highly recommend staying here!

First time at this home and the pictures were spot on! Family enjoyed and took advantage of home and yard (beautiful lawn) when not raining. Had bikes, chairs and wagons available in very organized shed. Thank you for sharing your home with our family!

We had the best stay at Scott and Rhonda’s house! The close proximity to town, wineries, and the beach was just so perfect! We also spent so much time at the house because it was so wonderful-the porch was our favorite spot! The bikes they provided were perfect for quick trips around town and all of the beds were very comfy. We created some awesome memories here and hope to be back for
more stays in the coming years.

We had such a fun and easy stay at this home! It was large enough to fit our group of 11 comfortably - we enjoyed eating / hanging out at the house as well as the quick walk to downtown. Communication with the host was also smooth.

My friends and I stayed at this beautiful Farmhouse for Super bowl Weekend, we had the best time. This house is awesome!! We had a ton of room and town is super close. Everything we needed was there. I highly recommend for a large group and would love to stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay very much. The house is absolutely beautiful. My friends and I are looking forward to staying there next year. Only one complaint, the landscapers were there Friday and Saturday most of the days with loud leaf blowers and we felt like they were looking in windows.

We had a wedding in Cape May and this house was perfect for 11 adults (some younger than others) to sleep comfortably. Location to town was perfect and loved being able to have access to many bikes to ride around town. Communication with the owners was amazing and house was adorable . Even decorated a bit for Halloween We will be back.

Would like to have had a book with information about how to operate the TV and suggestions/information about restaurants in the area. Also, we did not know there would not be toilet paper in All the bathrooms or paper towels in kitchen.

We were 5 senior ladies celebrating my 75th. I'm interested in birding, and Cape May is a destination, especially during spring and fall, for the migratory birds that come to the peninsula. I wanted a house that was centrally located and provided plenty of rooms so each could have their own space. The Black & White House was everything we could have hoped for. Beautiful inside and out. We enjoyed cooking dinners in the kitchen and morning coffees on the porch. We are cooks, and the kitchen met our needs. With regard to location: It became a joke whenever we looked for directions to any destination. "Let me guess. It's 3 minutes away." What a charming charming town, and what a beautiful house. Communications with Scott and Rhonda were perfect. They were super thorough and provided us with all the information we needed. Thank you for helping to make my 75th magical!

We have an annual golf trip every year. This year brought us to Cape May. Simply put, this is the best house we have ever stayed at. It is incredible. The guys couldn't stop talking about the porch, the history, the openness of the kitchen and family room, the decorations and furnishings.I could go on and on. It is our favorite after over 15 years of The Poppy golf trips. Thank you!

We loved our rental. It was historic yet had every modern feature. The hosts provided games as well as books. It was immaculate. We loved sitting on the front porch. The grand kids loved the swing.

Three couples and a friend were in Cape May to attend a wedding. We loved the house. It is amazing. Very clean and beautifully decorated.
This house is cozy and one to remember. Whether you are sitting on the porch, relaxing in the living room, or sitting at the kitchen table; there is plenty of room. Also, the bathrooms are a nice size and the showers have plenty of room.
The house has everything you need. The kitchen is well stocked and even has a coffee grinder so you can make a delicious cup of coffee instead of having to run to the coffee shop.
We needed to contact the host and the host was very responsive.
Thank you for sharing your home and adding to a very memorable weekend. On our next trip back to Cape May, we know where we are staying!

We stayed at this home with my sister-in-law and her family. There was plenty of room and it was very comfortable. All of the extra touches made our stay just perfect. There are plenty of games, beach towels, beach chairs, bikes, and actually there were some bath towels, blankets, and sheets. Our bed was very comfortable. Two of the bedrooms with the king beds have their own bathrooms. Everything is decorated so nicely and everything was kept nice and neat. The only
complaint I could think of is the narrow driveway, but there is also plenty of street parking. It is off a semi-busy street, but with the gated yard, we had privacy, and were able to keep the kids in the yard. It is a nice little walk to the Washington Mall. We had the best week, and would definitely recommend this adorable house!

We have four generations that vacation together year after year and this is the perfect house to give everyone all the space they need and provide no stairs entry and first floor master for older family. Our kids died over the bunk and loft in the kids room and the porch was fabulous. Couldn’t have asked for a better house!!!

Perfect for our large and growing family. Pleasantly surprised by the open floor plan and the size of the bedrooms along with all the amenities provided by the host. Beautifully decorated, and very comfortable. Loved the fenced in yard for the children and what an amazing porch. The porch was a favorite spot to hang out by all - morning, noon and night, and especially on a rainy day. Location was another plus, quiet neighborhood and just minutes to both beach and town. Best stay in Cape May so far!

Overall great place. Close to marina. Perfect for our family. We did drive place to place, but was early in the seasons. Might better suit if needs are near marina and like boating. The house had everything we needed and more. If I need to say a complaint it would be the carpets need to be cleaned and blankets washed. the garage could be more organized and porch could have been wiped down. But other then that was a great place. Thank you for everything. We really enjoyed ourselves.

This house is stunning on the outside and the location is fantastic. We loved the porches and the side garden and it was a short 10 minute walk to the beach or town. We hardly drove all week. Also very cool to be in the oldest house on cape May island.
But! The house was filthy. On arrival we noticed that our feet were turning black from walking around the home and found food wrappers and crumbs in the beds and under furniture. I immediately contacted the owner and he was quick to send someone to mop/clean, but it was also revealed that all the blankets on beds are not washed between stays, which is why the cleaners didn’t discover the mess from the previous guests. The owner also told me “this isn’t a hotel” but I stay in a lot of rental homes and have never found one in such poor condition and generally expect more especially from a home with such a high rating. They said they would update the listing to reflect this info about the blankets not being washed. Also, the house is very cluttered and the kitchen is filled with the leftover food items (dry food items) of other guests. We had to move all the decorative objects to have space to cook and to child proof, and with all the clutter there was more hidden dirt and grime.
The bathrooms were sparkling clean! Just bedrooms and living area had cleanliness issues.
Note: house is described as being fully fenced in yard, but that isn’t exactly true. There is no fence between yard and driveway giving kids access to the driveway and Street if you aren’t careful.

Beautiful, spacious home, everything we needed was there. Great location, just across from the Dr Physick house and a 10-15 walk to Washington St Mall and Congress Hall. Our family celebrated our Christmas there, and the house was decorated beautifully along with a Christmas tree. Would stay there again and recommend this home to anyone. The house even has a great history, being from the 1700’s. Loved the comfortable and cozy farmhouse decor, and the 3 young grandchildren loved the bunk room and loft. All the bedrooms were spacious and comfortable with two main bedrooms with attached baths, and a beautiful hall bathroom with double vanity and separate shower and very large bathtub. The kitchen was large and fully stocked with anything you might need and a large table with plenty of room for our family of 10.
