About this house rental
People who know Boca Grande, know the Historic District is the best place to stay. My house is very private but also close to the beach, shops and restaurants. Boca Grande has no traffic lights, sprawling resorts or snowbird traffic jams -- just privacy, gorgeous white sand beaches, outstanding shops and excellent restaurants (like Key West without the crowds). Golf carts and bicycles are the best way to get around Boa Grande. It is an exclusive, barrier island just north of Sanibel and Captiva islands on the west coast of Florida, close to the Sarasota/Bradenton and Fort Myers' airports, as well as the Tampa airport (2 hours away) which offer daily service from more than 20 airlines. (Once you arrive, I have drivers who can pick you up and bring you right to my front door and all you will need is a golf cart and bikes to navigate the island.)
My charming house, in the historic district, near town and the beach (honestly!) was built in 1911 at the same time as the world-renowned Gasparilla Inn just 1 1/2 blocks away (a real plus, explained shortly). My home provides many of the same amenities as the inn and some extras as well – your own private pool and a front screen porch for eating meals and then curling up with a good book and nap on the comfy couch.
My home has four bedrooms, sleeps 6 comfortably and has an excellent cook's kitchen with gas range and sharp Wustof knives. High-speed, wireless Internet access, 42-inch flat screen and a Weber grill as well as a charcoal grill for those who prefer that. Very important: Tempur-Pedic in master bedroom, comfy beds, soft sheets and pillows. People have traveled thousands of miles from 7 countries, 37 U.S. states and 40 Florida cities/towns (some as close as Siesta Key, a barrier island 45 minutes from Boca Grande!) to stay in my home -- many are repeat renters for years (have become friends) and have told their friends and family (please check out my reviews).
In 1911 the only way to get to Boca Grande was by train. However, in 1958 a causeway was built and then in the early 1980's a bike path was constructed in place of the railroad track and now runs the 8-mile length of the island. Boca Grande is known as an artists' community with many shows, has one-of-a-kind shops and fabulous restaurants right around the corner from me. Shell on the spectacular beaches, swim in the aqua blue Gulf of Mexico with the dolphins and manatees. You can kayak in Charlotte Harbor to White Pelican Island, where you will find the largest population in southeastern U.S. Bike to one of the two lighthouses on the island including the historic museum lighthouse at the south end. Play tennis, take yoga and Pilates and have a massage when you are finished (directions and names will be provided by me). Many golf courses just off the island. Guides available for tarpon fishing or backwater fishing for snook, snapper and grouper. Want to see the dolphins and manatees? Three options: Take your own boat (boat dock and trailer parking available upon request), rent a boat or hire one of the cruise charters. Hungry but love to cook? Head on down to Whidden's Marina to meet the shrimp boat! (I’m on the call list and will text you when the boat comes in).
Places in the Gasparilla Inn (open to the public) to visit and enjoy:
1. BZ’s is a room from a bygone era with a pecky cypress bar front and ceiling with comfy upholstered sofas and chairs. Enjoy cocktails/snacks here or on the adjoining porch overlooking the golf course.
2. Elegant dining room serves breakfast (try their oatmeal pancakes) and/or their 4-course dinner daily. Again, you will feel like you’ve stepped into another time.
3. The Pelican Room, built in 1932, where my husband, a photographer, and I spent an hour taking pictures in 1999 of the then 28-member George H.W. Bush family who are landowners, as well as frequent visitors to the island. Pool and backgammon are options here.
4. The Inn Shop and The Inn Boutique for special gifts and clothes (the first one just as you enter the front of the hotel on your left) and the other (just down the hallway on your right).
Just around the corner from me, owned by the Gasparilla Inn and also open to the public are:
1. The Pink Elephant, known as “The Pink” a restaurant that has been there for 60+ years which won the 2018 Wine Spectator “Award of Excellence.”
2. The Inn Bakery is a casual café (sit inside or out) that offers a wide variety of coffees, morning pastries and later on lunch including quiche, sandwiches and soups.
3. The Inn Marina & Sport Fishing is located just 4 blocks from my home on the bay side. You can bring your boat, launch and dock it, buy fuel and bait. Boca Grande is known as “the tarpon capital of the world” and they run from May to July in the Boca Grande Pass. I (or Brian Knight, the manager of the marina) can provide you with names of the best guides for tarpon, snook, grouper, snapper, mackerel and kingfish.
4. James Griffith Hair Salon specializes in hair, nail and skincare (facial) services. While the salon resides in the Gasparilla Spa building (owned by the Inn and not open to the public), it as well as the shop just as you enter the salon are open to the public.
I take great care to help you have a stress-free, memorable vacation. Susan Mansfield

Susan was a nice and helpful host! This house provided everything our family needed for a long weekend stay. The golf cart is a nice bonus and was used throughout our stay to travel around the island.

Perfect house for a great stay on Boca Grande. Everything is as promised or better and definitely plan to return!

Our family's stay in the Tarpon Cottage exceeded our expectations and greatly enhanced the comfort and ease of our Florida trip. Susan was a wondeful host and was a breeze to communicate with. She was instantly "on it" any time we had a question or concern and always responded rapidly. The beautiful cottage, located close to the beach and local restaurants, was incredibly comfortable. We especially enjoyed the scenic backyard patio, complete with a pool, shower, and comfortable lounge chairs. The inside of the house provided plenty of space to undwind and relax. The Boca Grande area was gorgeous, and our family enjoyed exploring it as well as surrounding islands. Seeing dolphins and manatees during our nightly sunset golf cart rides was an unforgettable experience. Additionally, our boat ride to Cabbage Key with Captain Chad was a highlight of our trip! It was a joy to stay in Susan's lovely cottage, and we would not hesitate to return!

I would give this house and owner 6 stars if it were available. The house was perfect for us to each have their own bedroom, large kitchen to gather in, the and a comfortable living area with front porch. The back with just the right size pool is icing on the cake.
The location is superb with access to the town, the Inn, beach, and to the Innlet where we kept our boat.
The owner guided us through opening up the house to everything while there and to closing up —- easy peazy. Susan was very responsive and when we had a question about the refrigerator, she jumped on it. By the way, there was nothing wrong with the refrigerator, we had loaded it with too many non-refrigerated drinks and it took it awhile to catch up. Just mentioning because we were amazed at Susan’s quick response and willingness to call her repair people.
Her recommendations for things to do and restaurants were spot on. We have been coming to Boca over a 30 year time period and all recommendations were exactly what we would recommend.
Susan and the house definitely are a 6! Above and beyond 5 stars.

This perfectly appointed beach cottage is located at the fringes of the main village of Boca Grande Island, just a couple blocks from everything you want, including the white sand, shell filled beaches. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well stocked, the pool clean and inviting.
There's a lovely front porch with lots of seating for your morning coffee and different seating areas in the back around / near the pool as well. Loved it!

Within minutes of booking this cute home, the owner had reached out to go over the house and any questions I had. She was easy to reach via phone or email. The home is located in the heart of downtown and within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and the beach. The house was well equipment with anything we may need and is just as described. Well kept, huge kitchen, great outdoor space. We look forward to returning in the future and enjoying the charm of this classic FL beach home.

What a fabulous home for a family vacation! There were 6 of us, which included my 2 adult children and their significant others. From the moment we first arrived, we knew it was going to be a special week... we just loved the house (the charm, the kitchen, the coziness, the pool and the front porch!) as well as the location which is central to both the beaches and shopping/restaurants!
Susan was terrific to work with and if I could leave more than 5 stars, I would!
So many wonderful memories were made last week...
We will be back!!

This cottage is a gem. All things Boca Grande are easily accessible whether by foot, bike or golf cart. The interior is light and airy and has all the amenities my family of four needs for a sunny week-long getaway. While we love and frequent the local restaurants, we also enjoy cooking in and eating by the pool or on the screen porch. Days are easy and so is getting to the beach, only two blocks away! In addition to the beach, my family loves being able to step out the door and take off on a long walk, bike ride or run. We also enjoy reading on the porch, playing cards at the kitchen table, sharing meals in, and plunging in the pool. If it weren't for pets at home, we'd stay longer!

Property was exactly as described. Very clean and quaint Boca Grande cottage located just a couple of blocks from shops and restaurants and a short golf cart ride to many beach access points. The dip pool was very refreshing in the afternoons. We would love to stay here again.

The cottage was comfortable, well decorated, and perfect for our group of 6 adults. The kitchen and dining area were roomy enough for all of us to be in there together to snack, cook, or eat. We had plenty of room inside, on the large front porch, or on the back deck area around the pool. The home has a clean, cool, theme inside and out with extras making the stay even more comfortable. We had a wonderful, relaxing week there and would recommend and stay again. Susan is a great hostess and was easily reachable with any questions we had.

Great location, great heated pool, everything was so nice for our stay! Chartered a boat and loved the day on the water. Saw 6 manatees in the canal by the Inn, amazing!

It is true what they say, location is everything! This house did not disappoint. It was well maintained and appointed and you can tell the owner takes pride in it. The tarpon fishing was out of this world! They put up a great fight. For lunch we headed over to Cabbage Key and are at the restaurant there. The seafood was as fresh and as you can get. Try the fish dip, uniquely delicious…Will definitely return to this place again.

We absolutely love staying in this sweet 1911 cottage in the historic district of Boca Grande. It's our third rental experience in this super clean and inviting home, with its wonderful owner Susan Mansfield who shares all sorts of contacts to make your holiday memorable. She gave us Bill’s # to pick us up at the airport. And then there's Captain Charlie Coleman who will take you out to lunch on Cabbage Key island or fishing if you prefer. If you don’t feel like cooking she provides a list of the best restaurants. If you want a massage she has that info and when you mention her name you get a discount on kayak rentals. Her island cottage exudes classic, historic charm, and if that is something you seek, you know how elusive these qualities are! First thing you notice is the tiled steps as you enter, the iconic blue door framed by palm trees and lush, tropical landscaping – including a neighbor’s mango tree that regularly offers its bounty from “the other” side of the fence! The front porch is dreamy for eating, relaxing and reading, particularly during Florida’s fleeting rain storms. The kitchen is spacious and fully-stocked with every amenity, including a citrus press for fresh-squeezed juices! The pool area is lovely and is always enjoyed throughout our stays. We love being close to town and the beach and will continue to visit our “home away from home” every year. Thanks, once again, Susan!

Great location, close to everything but the house needs some maintenance. Lots of the dishes were dirty, air filters in the a/c were caked with dog hair and dust. The supplied items for the beach were missing parts, worn out and generally just needing to be replaced. The hot water heater is a bit to small for the house so if you want to go for a nice dinner out make sure you time your showers if you want warm water. The cable tv did not work, looks to be like the power supply was dead. The house was cozy and we all loved the vacation just wish it was a little better maintained for the price we paid.

The Place to Stay in Boca Grande
Dear Susan
Your home is beautiful. From the tiny ceramic cottage, “Lizzie’s Happy Acres”, named for my sister, to the mermaids (I love mermaids) floating through almost every room, to the seafoam accent color (my favorite), to the red-haired Angel above the kitchen sink, to the uniquely designed landscape, everything was perfect. So many gathering areas…comfy front porch, cozy living room, family style kitchen/dining area, and expansive pool deck…make the house seem huge. And four comfy bedrooms. Lovingly maintained and well-stocked, your home felt like our home from the minute we entered the front door, and we treated it as such. We got lots of exercise in your warm salt-water pool. Location within a 5-10 minutes walk of restaurants, etc. Thank you for sharing your beach digs with us. And, most all we appreciate how responsive and attentive you were to assure our pleasant stay. We will be back! —Merrilee

Wonderful historic cottage in perfect location
Family wedding in Boca Grande this past weekend … we all spend a lot of time here so having a home w a pool and good A/C is important with little ones. The beach is great but the pool is a must!!
The golf cart is another huge bonus!! We are in walking distance to most things we do but a trip to the beach … chairs, umbrella coolers and toys.. requires a cart!!
It’s decor is light bright and clean!!
The owner is pretty much always available for questions and checked to make sure we found everything we needed!!!

We truly had a wonderful trip. Wish it could’ve been longer. We found the home to be absolutely charming and beautifully decorated. We also enjoyed reading about the history of the home and all about the second story addition. Highly recommend this home for your next boca grande trip on Gasparilla Island. We’ve been going here every summer for 12 years, and very much enjoy all of the restaurants,
shops and, of course, charming Hudsons, the general store. But the best part is going around the island on the golf cart. Our host Susan also provided bicycles. Which we did not use because it was 100° while we were there. Very brief walk or golf cart ride to the beach. It’s right by the Gasparilla Inn. There was an extreme heat advisory so we took advantage of the pool. Make sure on your next trip to Gasparilla island you don’t miss your quick walk to the beach after dinner. The sunsets are always amazing.Could not be a better location. We had a wonderful experience.

The home was very comfortable and nicely decorated. The connected pool and lanai added additional lounging and recreational space. You are several blocks from downtown Boca Grande, the beach, and good restaurants. This proximity allows you to experience all the charms of Boca Grande without having to use a car.
