✿ Small dog on Property
✿ DISCLAIMERS: Gecko's/Bugs/Etc.✿
We are in a real, live, and living tropical rainforest and Hawaii's natural fauna/critters, including gecko's and insects, sometimes invite themselves in - it's part of the rainforest experience and we don't charge extra for this. Gecko's and small lizards love the inside of the Bungalow and it's hard to keep them out, plus they eat bugs/mosquitos/gnats! If you are squeamish about gecko's and small lizards hanging out with you inside, this accommodation is probably not for you - it's okay, the geckoes won't take it personally! While other host on the islands don't like to mention these things, I'd rather be upfront and set clear expectations - it's a living rainforest and geckos and insects are part of the ecosystem....
✿ COQUI FROGS✿
The frogs are ✿ VERY LOUD ✿ at night - EVERY night, without fail. If it's raining, they are especially loud. Some people find their love songs soothing and comforting (like white noise), but others may find their nightly songs downright annoying. We offer Coqui blockers (a.k.a. earplugs) for all adult guests, and you'll find them on your bed when you arrive. Keep them. They are great for the plane ride home.
✿Mold✿
We live on the rainy side of the island, and it is damp, rainy, with very high humidity, which is typical for a tropical rainforest. Airborne molds are everywhere, and under these conditions, they thrive and multiply on this side of the island during the very wet months. While we can control it within the bungalow, we can not control it outside. Due to the open-air screened areas, airborne molds may be present (though not visible) in the Bungalow. Those with severe mold sensitivity issues should consider staying on the Kona side, where the climate is not as wet, damp, humid, and rainy.
✿Cats ✿
We currently have 15 cats. They are feral but we love them as our own and care for them. We ask that you do not feed them as we have established a feeding regime that keeps them useful and fed.
✿ We are a licensed vacation rental and charge/pay hotel accommodation tax and State taxes as required by law.
✿ If you need zooming fast WiFi for work or school, this is property is probably NOT the best choice. WiFi is available but can be VERY SLOW.

Very pleasant, specious property surrounded by beautiful nature

We had a wonderful stay in Hilo. The property was beautiful, clean and very close to Hilo town. It is surrounded by rain forest and the sound of coqui frogs at night was the highlight of our stay. Hope to come back again.

Absolutely loved staying here! It’s definitely not for everyone but they make that clear in the listing. Very welcoming, has everything you’ll need for your stay and more, very clean, less bugs than any other place we’ve stayed on the island even being in the rainforest. The only downside for us was the heat but that just comes with how hot Hawaii can get. We would absolutely stay here again and hope to soon!

We absolutely loved our stay at the Rainforest Bungalow! The location is great, very close to the Hilo Zoo and many beach parks. The beds are comfy and the chorus of frogs at night was fantastic. Our teens loved the bunk room with screens and the curtains made it very private at night. Everything you could need for day outings is supplied for use, beach towels, snorkel gear etc. The resident cats kept their distance but we all loved seeing them. Highly recommend this property.

If you want to hear the sounds of nature this is the place for you. Bungalow is nested in the middle of a rainforest so you constantly hear the sounds of the koqui frogs, birds, and other wildlife. Had a few visits from Geckos which was cool to see. The hosts do a great job with making the stay not only relaxing but educational, providing information about the sounds you hear, the rainforest, things to do near Hilo, and a little history. Thanks for having us!

Bungalow is a good word for this place. You’re right inside a rain forest with open-air walls. Comfy. Well maintained. Getting used to night critter noises takes a night or two. But better than hearing traffic all night! Hosts are very welcoming.

Me and my family love it we have everything we needed.
5.0
Property is as advertised, secluded feeling in rainforest but just minutes from town. Host family nearby but not intrusive. Attended to a small repair immediately. All essentials found in kitchen and plenty of beach gear, rain ponchos, towels etc. Cute place.

The location and setting were wonderful. I knew there was no AC, but the back room was simply reinforced screen. The only problem was that my kids were unnerved when the sun went down, every little sound set them off. We were perfectly safe, and after the first night slept well.

Fun and comfortable place to stay for Hilo portion of Big Island tour. We enjoyed the coqui frog chorus and appreciate available umbrellas, ponchos, and snorkeling gear even though we brought our own. Very close to zoo, and we enjoyed morning snorkel at Clarksmith beach a short drive across town.

It was a camping cottage experience we are glad to have experienced. Loved the singing frogs, flowers and foliage.

This was a well equipped and fun property. We stayed for a week and really enjoyed ourselves. It’s centrally located, but not in town.
You are definitely in the rainforest, so pay attention to all the information in the listing about the coqui frogs. They are loud. It’s lovely to listen to during the evening, but a bit more challenging for sleep. I found that silicone ear plugs made a big difference.
Overall we had a great stay and found a this to be a perfect home base for our adventures

We enjoyed the place and the responsiveness of our hosts. The Coquis were in full force every evening for sure. We did use the earplugs provided and that helped. 😊

The cottage was wonderful and the hosts Mike and Summer were as well. The location was perfect for me, only 4 miles from Hilo Bay. It only took 10 minutes to get down to Hilo Bay and the downtown area where I took full advantage of Lilioukalani Gardens, the farmer's market and the rocky beaches.
The cottage is unique in that most of it is comprised of rooms that are screened in. It feels like you are lout in the open. One night I went to sleep with sound of rain on the roof and the sounds of all the "wild things" in the forest. A very unique and wonderful thing. You don't get that at a resort!

If you are a nature lover this is a great spot for you. Hosts are welcoming and had enough condiments and a welcome fruit as a nice gesture. Would recommend this for nature lovers. If you are into concrete jungles this may not be for you

We had fun at the Rainforest Bungalow! Summer and family were very warm and welcoming. Good communication before and during the trip. Be prepared for full outdoor sleeping camping vibe, with lots of interesting sounds of nature throughout the night, some quite loud. No solid windows and rustic feel. Within 5 minutes of an adorable zoo and 10-15 min of a Target for all you may need. A fun place for a few nights when visiting volcanos national park!

The Rainforest Bungalow was a great stay, conveniently located to everything you would like to do on the Hilo side of the island. Laura, Mike and Summer were wonderful hosts, quick to respond and work through any questions you may have. The bungalow itself is clean and adorable, stocked with things you may need and we loved the breakfast bar with a view of the tropical plants. We enjoyed the sounds of the frogs at night, and the little green geckos that visited. 100% would stay again!

This place makes your visit to the big island a unique experience

We had a wonderful stay at the bungalow. Sleeping there is a great experience with all the forest noises. The bungalow is close to the Hilo beaches and not too far away from Volcano Park et the Mauna Kea. We had the chance to swim with turtles!

Visited at the beginning of July for a 2-day trip to the big island with my honey and two young adult children. Hoped to see the lava flow at Volcano Park, but it dried up the day we arrived and picked this location thinking it was much closer.
It was about 40 minutes from Volcano Park, but a beautiful drive through the land. The location is in a “tropical rainforest”, which you can learn about in one of the very thorough guide books created by the host (we so appreciated them). It’s in the same yard as the host’s house, but feels like your own little property with the surrounding foliage. It didn’t rain much while we were there, but definitely humid with mosquitoes, so be prepared for that.
This place was extremely well stocked with all you may need for outings (ice chest, all types of beach gear, sunblock, etc.). We didn’t cook on the burner, but the refrigerator housed all of our sandwich supplies and drinks, although it was a pretty small fridge.
Hosts were very kind and not intrusive. Frogs and all of nature’s sounds lulled us to sleep, we loved it, but there’s earplugs provided if needed.
Grocery store and food places within 10 minutes. Hilo a short 15-20 minute drive and cute town (recommend Hilo Burger Joint and Two Ladies Kitchen for fresh mochi).
I would not hesitate to stay here again.

My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic honeymoon here. The ambience surrounding us was so relaxing. Being so close to Hilo allowed for exciting adventures every day. I definitely recommend staying here.

We stayed at the rainforest bungalow as part of our family's first trip to Hawaii. We wanted something different from a regular hotel room, and something low key/quiet. This place was perfect! There was plenty of room for the five of us. It had everything we needed. The rainforest vibe, open air layout and very friendly and courteous hosts made our stay a great one to remember. Wish we could have stayed longer! thank you!

We really enjoyed our stay, the house is quite unique with the screen walls and make the experience really cool. The location is perfect, just outside of Hilo, get to the volcano park in 40 minutes. Summer was easy to communicate with. At night, the sound of the frogs is something else, it took us one night to adjust but makes the experience great. Beach towels provided as well as umbrellas : )

This VRBO is in a beautiful setting and the children had a magical experience. The hosts had a wonderful book full of different places to visit with great information about what places might be best for children. Although we wish we would have had more time, we were able to visit most of the places we found that looked like a wonderful experience. The snorkeling with sea turtles and fish was wonderful for the children, as well as the Volcano National Park. We highly recommend this VRBO.

I really enjoyed this property! It was nice and clean. It was also close enough to other people but gave you the isolation. Just a warning that this place might not be good for light sleepers as the frogs in the area are very loud even with the ear plugs.

Incredible experience in the Hilo rainforest. Beautiful scenery, several animal encounters and access to all areas of interest. Our favorite locations thus far while visiting the Big Island. We will definitely return in the future.

Summer was great with communication and so welcoming. We loved being sung to sleep by the frogs every night. The kids felt like they were at sleep away camp. If you want a rainforest experience, this is your place. But still super close to Hilo amenities and sites.

Beautiful property. Quiet, private, hosts were great and very friendly. Could have spent a day or two just staying at the bungalow sitting in a comfy chair reading my book.
Thanks for the stay.

Great stay. Just as advertised. Had plenty of stuff to make trip enjoyable such as beverage coolers, games for kids, and rain gear.

Great spot, quiet neighborhood. Perfect for our family with 2 kids age 6 and 9. They loved the bunk bed screen porch bedroom. Small kitchen worked fine for lunches/breakfast but not big enough for cooking huge meals (yay). Fun being in the lush plants and hearing all the rainforest noises. Great experience- kids already asking if we can come back!

This was our first time visiting Hawaii! We decided, last minute, to take a trip and use our airline credits because my husband found out he won’t be able to take any other time before the credits would expire. We are huge nature lovers and very active so resorts don’t appeal to us much. Joe found the Rainforest Bungalow -which is actually nestled inside the rainforest in Hilo - for
a great price!
From the very beginning of the process, our hosts made us feel like family. The communication was always prompt, thorough and helpful! We were greeted with a few lovely welcome gifts and the rules which were very clear and reasonable. They have put together a few three ring binders which included pretty much everything you’d need to know to have a fantastic, custom vacation. There’s info on restaurants, sounds, beaches, wildlife, beautiful areas to visit, things to do, shopping….they even provide copies for you to take along on your excursions. There are books about the culture, snorkeling fish guides, and maps. They also have made several items available for guest’s use like; beach towels, goggles, flippers, coolers, umbrellas, ponchos, the kitchen is stocked well enough to prepare anything that doesn’t require an oven. They have a portable, double burner, electric cooktop, pots, pans, blender, utensils, etc.
The bungalow is very tastefully decorated and the yard is amazing!!! They have a lime tree, an avocado tree, a rambutan tree, a coconut a many beautiful flowers!. It’s quiet and secluded, at night there is no riad noise just the melodic chirping of the coqui frogs, which helped me to fall asleep instantly. The wi-fi reception isn’t the best, but my son was able to use his phone. He would download movies when we were driving so they would be available at night.
We LOVED our stay❤️

We loved our stay here—the unit was exactly as portrayed in the listing. It was very well-stocked, from the kitchen items to snorkel and beach gear, bedding, and towels. We really appreciated the binders full of information about local attractions and day trips! The wonderful goodies left for us by the hosts were such a lovely touch as well.
We loved the experience of staying in the rainforest, and felt very comfortable in the peaceful neighborhood. Things got pretty stormy while we were visiting; our host Summer checked on us and even brought over a few lanterns in case the power went out (it never did.) She also greeted us when we arrived, and was the perfect balance of attentive yet unobtrusive.
We had stayed in two other rental homes before this one, and the rainforest bungalow was clearly more well-stocked and cared for than the others we visited. We did not need or wish for anything while here that was not provided!
All four of us (parents and two teens) give this property/home a huge thumbs up. One caveat: this is not a swanky, luxury property, so if that’s your style, go look for a generic luxury property. But if you’re seeking a unique, yet comfortable, vacation rental, this is the spot!

The Rainforest Bungalow is difficult to capture in words. When staying here you feel as if you are at one with nature. It is very spacious and open, and entirely screened in so that you experience the sounds and smells of the surrounding rainforest while having the comforts of home. The home is tastefully decorated and thoughfully equipped with items that will help you enjoy the beach. I look forward to staying here again when I return to Hawai'i..

Property Needed attention to cleaning and better internet communication.
