COAL D VINE COTTAGE IS A GREAT PLACE TO HOLIDAY, AND IS A GREAT BASE FOR YOUR HUNTER REGION HOLIDAY. BOOK and STAY AT OUR AUSSIE CHILLOUT! DAVID and HILARY, OWNER / MANAGERS, INVITE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TO RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY AT COAL D VINE COTTAGE.
Cessnock is now the gateway to the Hunter Valley wineries and Coal d Vine Cottage is only a five minute drive from Pokolbin Lovedale Wineries. It has the charm of a country town with all the facilities you need to enjoy your holiday.
Both Pokolbin and Lovedale wineries are a popular wedding destination. Coal d Vine Cottage is some of the closest accommodation you will find that can suit large groups of guests. Cessnock is located in the Hunter Valley region which brings with it lots of opportunities to explore the area.
There are a lot of speciality stores and producers including wineries, beer brewers, cheese makers, chocolatiers, sweet makers, olive producers, galleries and tea houses as well as public gardens, picnic areas and tours. While staying with us here at Coal d Vine Cottage, there are a couple of things we really recommend visiting.
The Hunter Valley Gardens span 25 acres and 10 feature gardens. Enjoy exploring the fragrant rose garden, take a rest above the 10 metre high waterfall in the Sunken Garden, check out the views at the lookout, and let the kids (young and old) enjoy the fairy tale characters in the Storybook Garden. With 8 kilometres of walking paths, there is plenty to see and explore. The gardens host some great events throughout the year, including Snow Time in July where you can experience an icy wonderland of a giant skating rink, a 25 metre ice toboggan and the opportunity to build a snow man in the Snow Play Zone; Christmas Lights with millions of lights on display lighting up the gardens; and school holiday activities for children.
The Hunter Valley Zoo is a great day out for all of the family, and is just 6 kilometres from Coal d Vine Cottage. With lots of animals to find, interactive walk through area and the option to feed kangaroos, touch a reptile, cuddle a koala and pat a wombat, everyone will love the zoo. Take along a BBQ or picnic, and enjoy a full day out at the Hunter Valley Zoo.
If you are looking forward to a round of golf while on holidays, there are a number of great courses in the area including Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club, Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley and The Vintage.
For those a little more adventurous, or looking for a romantic date while on holidays, we recommend booking a hot air balloon flight over the Hunter Valley. There are a number of companies that take flights over the vineyards early in the morning, and it is a great way to check out the area from another view.
The Hunter Valley Wine Festival runs over two months May to June and features more than 70 events. This is a great way to spend a day during these months. You can attend wine making master classes, vineyard tours, wine tastings, join a wine and food trail, cooking classes and more. There are also a range of Chefs Plates events which let you check out some of the best restaurants in the area at set prices.
Other events that happen during the festival include the Lovedale Long Lunch (great when visiting with a large group).
Have you ever wondered what it is like to stomp in a bucket of grapes? The Cessnock Stomp happens in April every year. It is a free event for all the family (you can take part in the stomping but there is limited places) and you can help us celebrate our local wineries and food producers.
Pokolbin is the home over 10 concerts each year including Day on the Green featuring popular artists you will know from growing up. Concerts are mainly held at Hope Estate and Bimbadgen. At less than a 10 minute drive from your accommodation this is a great way to enjoy a day with your partner, family or friends order a picnic hamper and wine, and sing and dance to your favourite tunes. There is a local shuttle bus that can pick you up and drop you off at designated points meaning you don't need to worry about driving.
If you are looking for something different while on holidays to the area, in early October Opera in the Vineyard returns. It is a great way to celebrate some of our local food and wine while enjoying some of the top Opera performers.
Throughout the year, the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre hosts some great shows and performances. Once you have booked with us here at Coal d Vine Cottage, make sure you check out what performances are on during your holidays.
Cessnock has the benefit of being close to a number of Hunter Valley towns, and there are a few we really recommend checking out. Wollombi Valley is a great day out, and is a great way to get off the highway on your way to Coal d Vine Cottage. When driving from Sydney, take Route 33 Tourist Drive via Calga / Peats Ridge from the Sydney Expressway. This will take you through the township of Bucketty and then following the old 1840s convict built route to historic Wollombi Village. Continue on Wollombi Road, through state forest, to Cessnock.
If it is wineries you are after, a day trip to the Broke Fordwich region is sure to help. The region is home to over 10 cellar doors and a large number of restaurants and dining options. The area also produces some of the best fruit in the Hunter region, so make sure you visit some of the many farm gates selling fresh produce.
Just over an hour away you will find the towns of Nelson Bay, Salamander Bay and Shoal Bay where you can discover over 20 beaches, swim, snorkel, dive, whale watch and more. You can also bush walk in Tomaree National Park, and enjoy the local restaurants and cafes. It is only expected that when in the Hunter Valley you will have plenty of options to get out and discover the produce and wines grown and made in the area.
THERE IS A COUPLE OF TOWNS WE REALLY RECOMMEND VISITING, BOTH FOR THEIR WINES AND THEIR HISTORIC SITES:
► Broke wineries known for their Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Sangivese, Barbera and Dolcetto
► Lovedale - Lovedale Long Lunch - May each year
► Maitland fruit wines made from local produce, Steam Fest and Groovin the Moo
► Morpeth Visit the historic shop fronts, wharves and hitching posts as well as Morpeth Wine Sellers and Moonshine Distillery

really suited our needs - family, pets and only needed a bed to sleep ! Its no hotel in europe but served our needs
6.0
Comfy beds, good air con, enough space. The kids liked the bunk beds. Doesn’t look that much like the photos, things aren’t as bright and clean and furniture has been moved and changed since they were taken. It’s missing a few basics that we had to get like a dish brush, laundry liquid, pegs, but has enough kitchen thjngs and over all was fine for a short stay.

It was a lovely few nights
The place was lovely and clean
8.0
it was good
4.0
Bed linen, pillows, duvet and towels were of a very poor standard....disappointing considering the high two person tariff for one night. No instructions for using the TV and no connection cord for the DVD player....finally sorted after contacting owner.
On the positive side, the house was warm and clean with a workable kitchen and close to shops and restaurants. Bathroom was functional with bath and ample hotwater. Laundry lacked a dryer which precluded us from doing a much needed clothes wash. Although this is an old home on a busy road, much more could have been done in presenting this property to improve the guest's comfort and overall experience and encourage repeat business.

Dreadful traffic noise, could not sleep

Two night stay
Overall a nice stay, the property is kept clean and tidy however the furnishings vary from the listed photos. The traffic noise is also loud from the main road throughout the night

Great central location to explore area from. Wonderful entertainment area. Owners very helpful A+
Great central location to explore area from. Wonderful entertainment area to enjoy. We had coffee every morning outside and listened to birds in trees while planning our day. Once inside our disabled daughter was able to manoeuvre around independently. Owners were great with communication and house was set up with folders to give local area guidance. Very clean and functional house with a fenced yard that our companion dog enjoyed exploring

Perfect Girls Weekend Retreat
We really enjoyed our stay in this property and will definitely be returning and recommending to everyone. The backyard was spacious and there was plenty of off street parking with a good size entertaining area at the back of the house. The house inside is beautiful and spacious and really well set out. The TV is easy to use and the bathroom has a bath tub big enough to accommodate a full size human which is a definite win. It is within walking distance from the local pub too which is fantastic. The owners are fantastic and very helpful and easy to contact. This property is A++.

Great location
The location of the property was a real bonus as it was only a 3 min drive into the town centre of Cessnock and only 5-10 mins to the wineries and markets. The house itself was old, we expected that going by the photos on the website, however it had a lot of charm and it was clean. There was lots of room to move around in the house and a big backyard for our son to play in. There was a fair bit of traffic noise from the main road during the day but it quietened down a lot at night and we were able to sleep well which what was important.

We enjoyed our stay here. The property was clean and a good size for us. Great outdoor area and plenty of room for the kids to run around in the back yard. We would definitely stay here again.

Fantasic place to stay
We've stayed here twice now and loved our stays. Plenty off room, loved having a spa bath and backyard for the kids to play. Wifi, netflix and Stan was a great bonus. Everything was as described. Would definitely stay again.
4.0
House was infested with small (German) cockroaches and needs to be sprayed. These came out especially at night so never knew was was on you when sleeping. Turn a light on and they were every where. Electric frypan tripped the electricity each time we tried to use it. There was no gas for the BBQ. It is an old home but with heaters was nice and warm. Would suggest that a rubbish bin be placed in kitchen as had to hang a plastic bag over cupboard door for food scrapes etc.
8.0
A comfortable budget accommodation close to all there is to see and do in the Hunter, plus right across the road from a little convenience store. A bit too much road noise, and a few quirks to the house such as bungee chords to hold up the curtains, but for the price an excellent stay. We were a little surprised that in the nice big kitchen you didn't put in a dishwasher? But I guess we must be spoilt! Thanks David for coming and getting the oil heaters out for us as I did need one for the babies' room. You were right though the gas heater did an very good job at heating the whole house where the doors were able to be kept open.So nice to have access to the cot and highchair makes life so much easier to have it all there waiting! And nice to be able to stay as an extended family in one house. Great outdoor area, would be perfect to sit in summer, we will try and come back!

Having stayed at CoaldVine on and off over the last few months, I couldnt rate the property highly enough! Not only does CoaldVine have everything you could possibly need for that weekend away and being only minutes from the Hunter Valley Vineyards, owners David and Hilary have made us feel right at home. So when considering your next get away to picturesque Cessnock, make sure you dont go past CoaldVine. Fantastic accommadation. Thanks David and Hilary!

We visited Hunter for a concert in October with another couple (4 of us in total). We found this cottage to be very neat and tidy, with newly renovated kitchen and bathroom. We arrived on Saturday; owners were very accommodating and allowed us an early access so we could refresh before rushing to "A Day on the Green". We'll definitely stay there again. Pluses of the accommodation are: clean with plenty of room for a large group, short distance & good access to vineyards, reasonable rates.Minuses: located on a fairly busy road, window curtains showing signs of age. Overall: good value.

We stayed in the Coal d'Vine Cottage for 3 nights with 6 Children and 2 adults while visiting my sister who has recently moved to Cessnock. Upon arrival we walked into a beautifully warm cottage that was neat and well suited to our needs. The kitchen was well apointed which is really healpful with 6 children. The only negative to the place is it is on a busy road but we would definately use this cottage again when visiting my sister.
10.0
Fabulous accommodation. After an almost 12 hour drive we arrived tired and weary to a welcoming house with the front porch light on and even better, upon entering the lounge light was on, music was playing and the fire was on. The home is incredibly well-equipped with everything you would need. I would highly recommend this property to anyone, and I will. Thank you David & Hilary.
