About this house rental
If you are searching for an island vacation that is different from all others, then search no more for you have stumbled upon North Captiva Island. Accessible only by boat, scheduled ferry, small airplane or helicopter, transportation on its sand roads is by golf cart, (one is included with the house), bicycle or on foot. Miles of pristine beaches, mangroves and a natural preserve comprise this mostly undeveloped island where swimming, sunbathing, boating, shelling, skiing, hiking, kayaking, bicycling, bird and wildlife watching are but a few of the preferred activities.
Sol Mar is a family-owned home and we want you to enjoy the same wonderful experience as when we are on the island. Our philosophy is, “Mi Casa, tu casa” (My home is your home). Our unique island home is 75 steps from the beach with spectacular panoramic views.
Surrounded by 4 distinct bodies of water, the Gulf, Pine Island Sound, Captiva Pass and Red Fish Pass, North Captiva Island offers world class fishing both from its shores and just offshore. Manatees, dolphins, sea turtles and the occasional sea otters are daily visitors to our island. Ospreys, eagles and gopher tortoises are year-round residents. Our island is a short boat ride to the nearby islands of Sanibel, Captiva, Cayo Costa and Cabbage Key of Jimmy Buffett’s “Hamburger in Paradise” fame.
Included in your rental fee is access to North Captiva Island Club with its large, heated pool and outdoor bar and restaurant. Guests can check-out kayaks on a complementary basis. (based on availability).
The main level of the house (which is elevated to 23 ft.), offers breathtaking bird’s eye view of the Gulf of Mexico, Pine Island Sound, the Salty Approach Airstrip. The lanai is the perfect place to enjoy the sunsets and sunrise, read a book, create island arts and crafts, take a nap or simply do nothing at all. Since the house is adjacent to the island’s private airstrip, watching small airplanes and helicopters land, take off and taxi down the runway is a thrill that you will not soon forget.
The fully equipped kitchen is located on this level so you can enjoy the amazing views while preparing meals. The dining room table is made of distressed wood. Here you will enjoy countless hours dining or playing games with the family. The main level has a full bathroom complete with a shower and tub for ease of bathing little ones or enjoying a soak. Two bedrooms are also located on this floor: one room has a queen size bed and an entrance foyer that can be closed to allow this bedroom to become the second master suite. The other bedroom has a full futon and 2 twin beds. Both rooms are tastefully decorated and are the perfect place to rest after a day at the beach.
On the second level of the house is the master bedroom retreat complete with two private balconies. The “Sunrise Balcony” offers views of the sun as it rises over Pine Island Sound to the east. From the comfort of the outdoor bed, you can also gaze at the Milky Way and all the wonders that the night sky has to offer. Shooting stars and a meteor shower or two are not an uncommon occurrence. From the “Sunset Balcony” you will enjoy the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico, views of Cayo Costa and so much more.
The master suite has a romantic canopy bed and a private sitting area. The master bath has a large two person shower as well as an over-sized soaking tub – the perfect place to rejuvenate.
Also located on the second level is a separate bonus sleeping room with a trundle bed that comfortably accommodates two. This bonus room is well appointed with a mall dresser and makes a for a cozy place for kids and kids at heart!
STILL NEED MORE BEDS for those friends and family that just could not stay behind? We know what that is like! Our family is made up of 9 siblings so we understand the importance of spending time together making memories. Sol Mar offers sleeping accommodation for up to two additional people in beds on two convertible twin ottomans and room for two more on the convertible sofa (queen bed) in the living room.
Ground Level

Leaving Is Hard. . . . .
. . . . no really, clearing this lovely house for check out was hard! There were twelve of us, three generations celebrating Pop's 75th birthday, and it was a fantastic vacation. But going to sleep in paradise on Friday night and waking up in boot camp Saturday morning was tough! There is a long list of chores to be done for a 9:00 am. checkout. A smaller group with fewer children might have had an easier exit, but we did it and we'll be back next year!!!!
Sidebar: three of our kids required antibiotics from the Publix pharmacy for ear infections, strep throat and a badly cut foot (Web MD to the rescue!) If you are unsure about dealing with the unexpected on an island, don't worry. The Tortuga staff are ready to help and it will all work out in island time!

Great get away.
The property was as listed, we had plenty of room to play and longe around.
TORTUGA was great with checking in and out. They handled our few issues promptly.
I would highly recommend this property for a great get away from it all.
Another plus was the air strip. We seen several plans come and go . The kids loved it.

Spectacular home!!
Sol Mar is spectacular and the location can’t be beat. Our family is in love with it. We were a group of 10 and there was room to spare. The home is spacious, comfortable and very well appointed. The kitchen has everything you could think of and more! There’s even a drawer with plates, bowls and utensil for kids. The views are unbeatable! Seeing the beach outside your window is the perfect start to every day. The top deck is an ideal spot for sunsets in the evening. It is just a few steps from the beach which is very convenient especially with large groups.
Also, being next to the airstrip was so much fun. It was so exciting to watch the planes and helicopters take off and land, especially for our 2 year old boy! The only real issue as mentioned in a previous review is the golf cart; it is begging to be replaced. Not having brakes wasn’t even a concern since it wouldn’t hold the charge enough to reach the beach. It was checked twice during our stay but we had to push it back to the house 3 times before we gave up using it. Luckily we were able to rent carts from Boats and Fun. We have rented from them on three separate stays and can definitely recommend them. Tortuga was very attentive in resolving our issues. Special thanks to Jorge who was incredibly helpful throughout our stay!
That being said I would definitely recommend Sol Mar for your North Captiva getaway. Our family had a blast and cannot wait to return!

Amazing House with everything you need
We have been to north captiva 5 times and this was the first time at sol mar. I can definitely say this is the best house there, you get everything you need. You wake up with a water view, watch the airplanes take off, watch the sunset from the main house or deck area and more. The pool deck area is perfect and comfortable for everyone to enjoy. I definitely recommend this vacation house for anyone looking to relax!

Fantastic location with awesome ocean views from decks. The outdoor living space and pool deck is one the best on the island. A great location!!

What a view!!!
We really enjoyed our stay on North Captiva Island! It was a vacation meant for relaxation and family time. The house was a great location! Watching the planes come and go was so much fun for my family. And the view every morning was unbelievable! We enjoyed shelling and easy access to the beach. Being a part of the North Captiva Club was helpful. We used their bikes to explore the island and the outdoor pool at the club. We did have two issues. The golf cart that went with the house did not have brakes (or at the very least did not work). We were able to manage, but there were a few stressful moments. We were supposed to get the cart replaced but it never did. I’m not sure if they didn’t have more or not. The second thing was the pool. The water level was low (we had to fill pool each day) and because of this the filter wouldn’t work properly to keep it clean. The property was very quick to try and fix this problem by sending over people to work on it, but i think it may be a bigger issue to look into. We would also recommend that the property have a binder with eating options, phone numbers, amenities, and how house works (pool heater, ferry numbers, nearby islands to visit). Overall, our stay was fantastic! We had two families. We had 4 kids who ranged from 10-14 years old. We made so many memories and enjoyed our stay immensely! The above issues are listed for an honest review when people are considering renting the property. Thank you for the stay!

We loved it!
With 11 people in tow we had a wonderful week on NCI in this home! We celebrated a 40 anniversary and a birthday while on the island and this beautiful location was a great choice for those memories. The close proximity to the beach was clutch and the pool was lovely! Duncan at Tortuga was a great asset for us and we thank him for his hospitality! With grandkids from 4-10 years and us oldies we loved seeing the planes come and go! Thank you Sol Mar for our great memories!

Amazingly comfortable
Our stay from 2/6/22-2/10/22 at Sol Mar from start to end was amazing. We want to thank Lily, Diana and Ana Maria for helping us before and during our stay. Our contact with Justin of Tortuga properties was also attentive to all our questions. Everything from the ease of booking, to the Island Girl Charter to and from the island was a great experience, even had dolphins jumping and playing in our boat wakes to and from the Island. Sol Mar is such a beautiful location. The home was so beautifully decorated from room to room. The views from the many locations throughout the home are very special. Watching the waves and listening to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico roll on shore was as peaceful as you could imagine. All throughout the home, each room was comfortable and relaxing. The walk around deck on the main floor was a treat to relax on, with a beverage and snack, and to watch nature at treetop level. When we walked out the master bedroom sliders onto the rooftop balcony we just thought how lucky we were to be there. It’s breathtaking. The ground level of this property is also designed with relaxing in mind. An outside bar, outside kitchen, lounge chairs everywhere, seating in every corner make staying outside as comfortable as being in the home. The raised pool and hot tub were perfectly heated on the cool days. We even got to see small planes take off from the grass covered runway next to the home. Sol Mar has everything you’d want in a vacation location. The home had toys, games and puzzles for children of all ages up to adults. Literally, the only thing needed was clothing, food and beverages. When you want to adventure away from the Sol Mar there are beaches all around, there are restaurants, club pools, kayaks, bikes, golf carts, walking paths and much more. I highly recommend taking all the little side roads to find the beautiful beach spots and check out the homes. It’s easy to sink into island life at Sol Mar of North Captiva Island. We are excited to go back.

Sol Mar is the place to stay!!
This is our 2nd year coming to the beautiful SolMar home. They have everything in the home one could possibly need. Lily and Ana Marie are the best people and truly care that you have the best experience. . They treat you like family! The pool , the view from the balcony, cabana room, the grounds were all spectacular. My son in law caught 4 juvenile sharks and a stingray right off the beaches.
Highly recommend water shoes for shelling! Can’t wait to return next year!!
Thank you for sharing your home with us.

The Great Escape
I can't say enough good things about this property. Our stay was wonderful. It's a beautiful property; spacious, clean and comfortable. It's well equipped with all the amenities you need for your stay. Great location, private and steps away from the beach. The pool area is peaceful and relaxing surrounded by luscious landscaping and lighting. There are lots of nooks outside where you can relax, take a nap or curl up with a good book. We explored the island by way of the Gulf carts and bikes provided. Waking up to breathtaking views of the ocean while sitting out on the porch sipping my coffee and ending the days with spectacular sunsets on the beach were the highlights of my stay. I highly recommend this property. We will definitely be coming back again!!!

Paradise
Wow, who knew? We hadn’t yet, obviously. We tend to play “how many family member” can fit into a house (using several VRBO all over America, South America, Caribbean, etc., (come Christmas time, etc…). This is the game, and we usually just have a real good time catching up with our extended family.
This time (while a little coordination was probably a pre-req…, ) we kinda went off the grid. Captiva north island is a GEM!! And so worth the trip.
And thanks to the Tortuga team (they helped with sooooo much and bailed us out a bit too😉) we had such a great stay.
They shuttled us from arrival and to our departure even tho departure was 7am before sunrise on New Years morning!!
Also, anything maybe seem to go south for a second, Tortuga stepped in and had it fixed like lightning (just holler)!!
Jose retreat?/sol mar ( our VRBO) was just amazing. Offering everything!! Set along an airfield wedged between each coastline of the island. Two beaches (each end) within a 6-10 min walk of each other. Golf cart gets you anywhere.
My teenage daughter and I went looking for places to hike and to see stuff off the beaten path. We found manatees, waterways, unmarked paths, mangroves, piers, you name it…
Clubhouses offered seemingly enough if you wanted to be taken care of, but we usually make our own food. Both the club bar and barnacles, the one right by our house, were great.
Getting off the island for a 10 am flight outta fort meyers seemed tricky until the property owner hooked us up with a private charter before sunrise. This helped a lot. And, if you should ever need a private charter, you just don’t find better people than captain Chris Hortsman.
The charm of this island is real, the effort of everyone on it, to make you wanna return again, was readily apparent. This place is special!!!
Rent this house. YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED. the yard layout the amenities, the meditation garden, the heated pool, the adjacent jacuzzi, the views of the ocean from all of it…
For being on a small, detached island, SOL MAR left us longing for nothing.
TY to everyone. Btw: Communication with the owner prior to visit proved to really set the experience/excellence for the entire trip/stay.

2022 - Return visit
We had another great experience at Sol Mar. the location of the home is fantastic with clear beach/gulf views along with regular (and exciting) plane and helicopter takeoffs and landings. The upgrades to the pool and grilling area are terrific and made the overal experience very relaxing and enjoyable. We also chose to stay another week at a nearby property and the management group and owners were kind enough to work with us so we didn’t lose any of our groceries (to heat) in the transition. A great family location for great family memories! This one will be especially memorable for us as our daughter learned she was accepted at West Point while we were visiting.Thank you!

Paradise Found!
My fiancé and I wanted to get away for a couple of days to celebrate our recent engagement. I reached out to the owner and she was so accommodating to our busy schedules! The house is absolutely gorgeous! We were able to watch the sunset right from the elevated deck on the property! When we arrived, there was a bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us…every detail was carefully thought out. We will definitely come back to celebrate our anniversary here! Thanks Lily, for creating the perfect stay for us!

Incredible view, beautiful home, amazing service, perfect vacation!
We came for a short getaway with our family (including our beautiful 18 month old granddaughter) and the home, the views, and the service was so much more the we expected! The house is spacious and comfortable with incredible views from the wrap around deck. We had everything we needed: beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, toiletries, and even beach toys for the baby...we didn't have to worry about a thing! Not only did we get amazing sunsets, but we got to see an airplane land as well. (my granddaughter was so excited!) The deck and pool area was a great place to hang out and the beach is just a short walk away. Tortuga properties provided excellent service! From the moment we arrived until we left, they were there to help in anyway they could. When I arrived, I asked about kayak rentals, and to my surprise, there was one waiting for us the next morning! The only regret I have is not being able to stay longer...but we definitely will be back because we have found "our slice of paradise!".

The house was as described. Magnificent. Clean. beautiful, great views, and access to the beach. The house itself warrants a 5 star review. The management company on the other hand was terrible. The only way to communicate with them was thru either text or email. Non responsive to issues. That is why I gave it a 3 star review.

I don’t typically post reviews but this was such a poor experience, I want to help other not go through the same thing.Sol Mar is misrepresented on the photos. Have plenty of pictures of the real thing which are posted in other places. We were super excited about this vacation and the lower pool level sold us on the property. However, it is not like the VRBO pictures. On arrival the pool was 97 degrees & dirty. There are “caution" signs surrounding the pool deck due to broken steps leading to the pool. The trash was overflowing from the previous renters. There are lumber/ladders/refuse stored in the side of the yard. The “Zen Garden” was overgrown with weeds, broken items and the pool hut was filled with trash and not well kept. There is a lower cabana advertised to sleep more and listed as one of the bathrooms. In this area, the shower only has one door (told contractor broke other one) and a sign that states do not flush anything, even toilet paper. But most of all the smell in the room is so musty, it is likely harmful to sleep in due to mold. There Is a dehumidifier in there but it fills up very quickly and does not help with the smell. This area is also being used to hold a broken refrigerator. We reached out to Tortuga but no response in 24 hrs. Reached out to property manager who told us that there was a pending lawsuit for construction work that was not finished. No explanation for the state of the rest of the property not being as pictured or why we weren't informed in advance of our stay. She responded to a few of our concerns (trash picked up 3 days after arrival, pool cleaned) but when we asked for a refund, she cited difficulty contacting owner in Colorado. We said we'd wait to review to be able to cite how the owner responded in our review, thus a kinder review. When we said time was up 10 days later, accused of making a threat. Not sure how you can threaten with the truth. The actual house was ok and the location was great. Golf cart is functional but very worn. This property is very poorly maintained and not worth the cost. We had a group of 10 and tightly fit in the house. We had never been to N. Captiva before and it was highly recommended by friends. However after our experience we DO NOT recommend Sol Mar due to the poor property maintenance and unresponsive management company. We should have been notified that this property is under construction and the pictures of the property are OLD and need updated.

Amazing Beach Stay
We absolutely loved our stay on the beach. The house was perfect for our large group of 14 with two infants. The management team helped us with our every need immediately. The only difficult decision was whether to have a pool day or beach day so we did both. The sunsets and seashells were amazing. Dolphins swam by everyday. We will definitely be back. Best Family vacation February 2021
The SolMar home in Jose Hideaway was beautiful. The location was the best on the island. Drinking coffee every morning on the balcony overlooking the Gulf was amazing and relaxing. At dinner time we could see the dolphins playing out in the water. Watching the planes land and take off while sitting on the balcony was so much fun for all to view.
The amenities in the home were top notch. The bedding was all high end which left you with a good night sleep! Other than food and sunscreen, this home leaves you with everything you need for your stay. There is a cabana on the main level by the pool that is so convenient for bathroom breaks, showering or just relaxing. It is like a small apartment.
The homeowners, Ana Marie and Lily, were truly interested in you having the time of your life.
Every day is different on the beach. We would totally recommend water shoes for shelling. There are so many amazing shells and sand dollars all over the island.
We had a golf cart for getting around which was a lot of fun.
The manatees were out for our viewing. So harmless.
We totally recommend Emily from Emmy boating excursions. She was so knowledgeable of the island history. Her boat was nice and she treated you as a friend. She was amazing.
The food on the island, although not a lot of places to go to, was really good. The ribs at OTW were outstanding.
We would highly recommend Solmar from your next vacation. We will be back for sure!

What a great place! Group of 11 (6 adults; 5 kids) enjoyed a week stay Jan 2021..
Having never been to North Cap, we were not sure what to expect. A trip to an island with groceries, etc. seemed daunting on this group from Chicago, but it was great. We ordered groceries through Instacart/Publix. Used the tip to say pickup a few days early requesting boat packing and noting actual pick up time. Called Publix a couple of times and they were very helpful with process. Everything was packed appropriately in coolers as needed and brought out to us. The CT Taxi vehicle that picked us up was not big enough for the group and all of the groceries, but a call to CT fixed this problem and another vehicle met us. The ferry workers load everything for you and are not shocked by the amount of stuff!
From the moment we arrived, Duncan and the Tortuga team were awesome. They met us with golf carts and trailers and loaded everything. They took us on a quick tour of the island on the way to Sol Mar. As we arrived before check-in, we were able to drop stuff in the cabana and enjoy the pool area until cleaning was done.
The set up was great for our group. The master bedroom on the third floor has spectacular views and the king bed was one of the most comfortable vacation beds. My son (13) loved the "bonus" room off the master (twin trundle; tv). The 4 "littles" (8-11) shared the bunk room (2nd fl) with a full/twin bunk and twin. Queen room on the second floor was very comfortable with good views. One couple took the cabana with a full bed/twin bunk. It was fine, but this is a great space that could be utilized better. (Queen/two fulls?) Loved having a bathroom/fridge down by the pool so you did not always have to hike up the stairs. The "first floor" is two flights up.
The outdoor area was great. Took a bit to figure out the pool/hot tub heat but it worked great when we did. Truly steps from the beach; enjoyed watching the planes. People are particular about the runway.
Ordered seafood from Tortuga twice - stone crab to die for, snapper, grouper, and shrimp. Easy & delicious. Brought fresh to us. Also needed a mid-week refill on groceries/booze and Tortuga was great. Constant text communication.
Check out was simple. Our flight was later. Left bags and Tortuga brought to ferry for us.
Really enjoyed Mainstays/Barnacles for mid-afternoon drink/snack, especially conch fritters and Captiva Breeze!

Wonderful stay!!!
What a wonderful home.....lots of thought went into the design, furniture, washer and dryer are huge, kitchenaid blender awesome for making drinks. Best of all are the views and beach. We swam with manatees most days right off the beach.
Helpful hints:
-Water shoes for beach
-Casita room not really suitable for bedroom during our stay due to humidity and musty odor. A window air conditioner was placed, which did help.
-An outdoor shower would be nice for keeping sand outside.
-We had never seen so many dolphins in our life. They just seemed to be having fun.
-Outdoor pool area was awesome. We would have stayed in this area more, but mosquitoes were really bad. We were told that the bug spraying was delayed because of Covid.
All in all, we had a great time and would stay in this home again.

Loved our stay!
We had an amazing time at Jose's Hideaway! The proximity to the beach is perfect and the pool/hot tub area was very relaxing. We had a family of 11 stay here and there was plenty of beach chairs, pool toys and space for everyone. We loved the option that we could go to the club to eat a few times and took advantage of their beautiful pool area as well, as part of our rental benefits. Thanks to Lily & Kristen for the great accommodations and assistance with everything. Highly recommend!

Great vacation
We absolutely loved the location of Jose’s Hide-a-Way. Convenient to beach’s and beach club. Thank you to Laurie Rosen of Tortuga Properties. She was the property manager of the house and was fantastic. Definitely use Island Girl Charters for transportation. They brought all of the groceries and luggage right to the rental for us. The pool and hot tub were fantastic. Only snafu was the casita bedroom. Unfortunately we were unable to use this room due to moisture and a very musty smell. The A/C was broken in this room also. The owner should not advertise this as a 5 th bedroom. The Master bedroom is lovely, the other room upstairs is a twin trundle. Suitable for two children or one adult. We were a large family so we made it work.
Listening to the waves lull you to sleep at night made our stay amazing. It was a great vacation. Perfect weather !

A Perfect Winter Getaway!
This property is amazing! The house is very spacious which allows for large groups to still have privacy. We had 9 adults, two slept in the casita, the others up in the main house. Beds are very comfortable (would be nice to put a queen size bed in the casita though as the bunk beds weren't all that comfy) but good enough for our 23 year old boys. They enjoyed having their own privacy as well. Kitchen is very well equipped and we made all of our meals here after having groceries delivered to the house the morning of our visit. The view is outstanding, and we walked to the beach every evening for sunset. We watched several planes land and take off on the airstrip, we all enjoyed that very much. The pool was a very special amenity and we got plenty of use out of it and the hot tub. We rented an additional golf cart to use and we all enjoyed driving around the island. Go to the sandbar to find rare shells and sand dollars!
The reason for only 4 stars instead of 5 is because the hot tub and pool were the same temp, you couldn't heat the hot tub without heating the pool as well and the blower wasn't working. Also, the bikes provided are not in rideable condition, they are super rusty. The kayak was available for use and that was also nice.
Overall, a property that is well worth its rental rate. The homeowners have very tastefully decorated the house and Tortuga Properties is great to work with. Thanks for a great week on your beautiful island!

Wonderful stay at the stunning SolMar!
My family and I had an amazing time at SolMar. The home has a prestigious location, is tastefully decorated, and has beautiful views from the balconies. We highly enjoyed watching the planes come and go off the runaway. The property is clean and very well maintained. Late night bbq and dipping in Lily’s sparkling pool was our favorite pastime. We are so excited to return next year!
