Exploring La Jolla:
There is no shortage of things to explore and discover right in La Jolla from eating at top restaurants with expansive views to strolling along the ‘cove’ to learning to ocean kayak to taking in a show at our Tony Award-winning Playhouse.
For an ongoing list of current events be sure to visit and download the free app La Jolla 37; it is an interactive map that lets you discover 37 places within La Jolla and the stories behind places from the Cross on top of Mount Soledad to Seal Beach to the Cove to many more.
Here is a short list of my top 10 picks for places to discover:
1. La Jolla Playhouse: If there's a show on, don't miss the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse - in the past 20 years, they've launched no less than nine plays to Broadway (including Jersey Boys, I Am My Own Wife and Memphis), with six of them winning Tony Awards and one garnering a Pulitzer Prize.
2. Mount Soledad: Climbing up to the Mount Soledad War memorial affords magnificent views of La Jolla, San Diego and beyond.
3. Torrey Pines Reserve: Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast! Because of the efforts and foresight of the people in this area, 2000 acres of land are as they were before San Diego was developed -with the chaparral plant community, the rare and elegant Torrey pine trees, miles of unspoiled beaches and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds. Well worth taking a few hours to hike (easy hiking tails) to explore this Park.
4. La Jolla Cove & Shores: This is still the number one draw for visitors from around the globe; a simple stroll along the seawall above the cliffs will quickly reveal why? La Jolla Cove is a small, picturesque cove and beach that is surrounded by cliffs in La Jolla, San Diego, California. The Cove is protected as part of a marine reserve; underwater it is very rich in marine life, and is popular with snorkelers and scuba divers.
The swells that often roll in from the open ocean here can be rather large and strong, and so being in the water at the Cove is not always suitable for people who do not have good water skills. The water temperature is also often a little colder than the average San Diego beach, and the beach has the disadvantage that the dry sand area is very small at high tide. In contrast, during very low tides, a lot of interesting tide pools are revealed at the Cove.
5. Shop Girard Ave & Prospect Street: The choice of celebrities and bargain-hunters alike, La Jolla is for all who seek 'just for me' instead of 'me, too'. Here, you'll find the priceless and the popular. The haute couture and the comfortably familiar. The world's most luxurious brands and the everyday values. Who wouldn't you rather browse a beautiful seaside village than a crowded, noisy mall? However, it is the numerous art galleries that get my top pick for ways to shop or ‘window shop’ in my hometown.
6. Take in the Sunset: Take your pick from the WindanSea, The Shores or The Cove; all offer amazing places to watch the sunset. People camp out hours in advance with their lawn chairs and picnic dinners to experience one of the most photographed sunsets in the world.
7. La Jolla Open Aire Market: Every Sunday, the upper playground at La Jolla Elementary is transformed into a colorful, friendly and wholesome Farmer's Market. Come experience the community feel, live music, creative artisans, diverse food court, and local farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Consistently ranked as one of the largest and best farmers markets in San Diego, our Sunday Market in La Jolla has grown to become one of the premier weekly events for locals and tourists alike. Families and their kids can enjoy the live music, fresh air, playgrounds, and grass fields to run and play on.
8. Birch Aquarium at Scripps: Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the public exploration center for the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and the Caribbean. An interactive museum showcases research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, Earth and ocean science.
9. Museum of Contemporary Art – La Jolla: At MCASD in La Jolla, take in the fabulous ocean view from the Edwards Garden Gallery, or lunch on the patio at the Museum Cafe. The La Jolla location also houses the Museum’s X Store, filled with a selection of contemporary art books, apparel, and innovative design objects.
10. Biking, ocean kayaking, paddle boarding, etc: The town was designed for outdoor ‘lovers’ and there is no shortage of ideas from renting cruiser bikers and exploring the town by bike to kayaking to learning to surf. However, my top pick, would be to rent a kayak and explore the La Jolla Caves. A guided tour is highly recommended,
And here is my top picks for places to eat from take out to casual dining to top-notch restaurants:
Great Take Out places ($-$$): El Pescador Fish Market, 627 Pearl Street or The Promiscuous Fork, 6984 La Jolla Blvd. *one of my favoriate things to do is grab take out from either of these places and watch the sunset at the La Jolla Cove or WindanSea Beach
Great Casual Dining places (aka very family friendly) ($-$$$): Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, 702 Pearl Street or Prepkitchen, 7556 Fay Ave.
Great Top-Notch Restaurants with amazing views ($$$-$$$$): A.R. Valentien, The Lodge at Torrey Pines, ask for a table out on the deck and watch the sunset over the 18th hole of Torrey Pines Golf Course, rated one of the top restaurants for a reason, well worth the experience or Eddie V’s, 1270 Prospect Street, amazing views, service and food, one of my personal favorite places to dine.

The property is as advertised - clean, warm, and inviting - and it is well located to most any central La Jolla address by foot or vehicle. Everything is up-to-date and comfortable and Lisa was a wonderfully responsive host. Checkin is very easy, and there is a short, manageable to-do list on checkout.

First of all, this property is immaculate! It's probably the cleanest place we've ever stayed. And then you add in the location and you've got an A+++ in my book.
We barely drove anywhere and walked to the beaches, restaurants and shops. The LaJolla Open Aire Market on Sunday was a total treat.
Lisa was very open with all communications. Her instructions were spot on, and they were always welcome and helpful.
We loved tbe rooftop deck; it was great for relaxation. The beds were comfortable, the water pressure was great and all the appliances were in great working order. We always appreciate a washer and dryer, too.
Really, this place had all the comforts of home and I kind of want to just live in it forever.
Thank you, Lisa! P.S. I appreciated the labels!

When you have zero stress on vacation, you know it’s a winner! This place was perfect- great set up and location was incredible with grocery store, great restaurants, shops and cafes right there and a few blocks from the ocean. It was very comfortable, quiet with an awesome set up, roof deck and parking and Lisa is an A+ host who has thought of everything and very responsive. Thanks for a great week- we’ll be back!

Wonderful property and terrific location!

This 2nd story apartment has lots of windows, making it bright and airy, and giving good cross-ventilation from ocean breezes. It was very clean, and everything was in good repair. We appreciated having a washer and dryer, and enjoyed sitting on the outdoor deck. The location is convenient – you can easily walk to a nearby grocery store, pharmacy, and several restaurants. During our stay, some construction nearby was noisy during the day, but it was quiet at night for sleeping. Lisa, the owner, communicates well.

The property looked exactly as advertised. It was very clean and comfortable. The host was extremely responsive leading up to and during our visit. We enjoyed our stay!

Lisa’s property was perfect for our family of 4. We dropped off our daughter at college and stayed for a week. Loved the walking distance to everything. Great restaurants, beaches and loved walking to watch sunsets!! The house is clean and organized and has everything we needed. Lisa was very easy to communicate with. I would definitely recommend this place - we can’t wait to come back!

Location is great! You are steps away from dining on Pearl Street. Walking distance to grocery stores, pharmacy and about ten minutes to the beach.
The home is beautiful, well stocked and clean! The neighborhood was quiet and the space felt private. Highly recommend. I would definitely stay here again.
Lisa is a great host. Thank you Lisa!

Our family of 4 stayed here for 10 days and it was a perfect place to call home for our trip. We had plenty of room to spread out and do our own thing after a long day of vacationing and exploring. Enjoyed the deck with family games most nights and appreciated the beach items (chairs, boogie boards, etc). Easy walk to beach, tidepools, shops and food. Taco Shop is fantastic by the way!!!
Host very responsive and helpful when needed. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

We visited San Diego for the first time and La Jolla was the perfect speed for our family (two kids under 12). The neighborhood has everything we needed and beaches and attractions were very walkable! We stayed for four days and left saying we could stay another four and still not get to all of the restaurants we wanted to try!! The Taco Stand is worth waiting in the line and Breakfast Republic is delish! If you visit on a Sunday, the Open Aire market is great! We would definitely gray again if we find ourselves in La Jolla.

This well appointed home was perfect for our family of four! Located just a short walk to the beach, grocery store, and restaurants. The house was well equipped with all the essentials to make us feel at ease with our two small children. Don’t pass this one up as it’s a true gem! We will definitely return.

This property was clean, comfortable, and inviting - the location was perfect - walkable to beach and wonderful restaurants/coffee shops. Lisa was very accessible via texting and answered inquiries quickly. Will definitely check the availability on this and her other properties the next time we’re in town Thanks, Lisa!

Really enjoyed our stay at this property. The house itself is tastefully done up, comfortable, well stocked but best of all- has the best location! Walking distance to everything in La Jolla-the beach, restaurants, grocery stores and the shops. It was also an easy drive to the airport, SeaWorld and to the Old City Transit Center from where we took a trolley to the USS Midway!
We felt very safe in the house given its safety features and location in a nice neighborhood.
Would highly recommend and would come back again!

This is our 2nd time at this VRBO, we enjoy staying here. The 2-bedroom condo, 2nd of the two stories is spacious, clean. There’s a large outdoor private deck w/lounge chairs to read & read—includes visiting hummingbirds. Our two-week stay went smoothly, host Lisa quickly responsive to our communication, appreciate. Walking to the beach for sunset, nearby grocery store, cafes & bakeries—even a tiny Goodwill store to find a treasure—all a treat, safe & stress-free.

This is our second year to stay here for the month of July so we obviously like the place. It is very clean, comfortable, modern and well maintained. The large patio was very nice. Having air conditioning during the recent heat wave was a plus. On-site parking included. Lisa has put some thought into providing almost everything one might need or want. She was very responsive to addressing any issue that arose during our stay and answering our questions.
Location is great. Close to lots of restaurants, Von's (grocery) and CVS. We enjoyed the 15-20 minute walk to restaurants on the Cove.
Already planning to return.

Had a wonderful stay at Lisa's place in La Jolla with my 16-year -old son. The apartment was very clean, nicely furnished and well-stocked and Lisa the host was extremely communicative and accommodating. While the apartment is tucked away in the middle of the block (and you can definitely hear the neighbors downstairs), the location and having a parking space in La Jolla is very convenient. For the price, we'd certainly stay here (or in another of Lisa's properties) again.

Cute place, located within walking distance of everything La Jolla has to offer. Stocked with everything you need, including beach toys. Thank you for having us.

We spent 6 weeks in Lisa's appartment. The place is fully equipped and located just few minutes walk from the beach. We enjoyed spacious terrace with bbq, very clean and cosy furnished interior and the amazing location, with shops, playgrounds for kids and ocean just around the corner.
Lisa is the best host you can imagine. She supported us during the stay and showed a lot of understanding, when our first "attempt" to visit La Jolla was cancelled due to start of the Covid pandemic, almost two years ago.
I can highly recommend the stay!

We had a fantastic stay here! The property was perfect for our family (2 adults and 2 kids age 3 & 4) . Lisa has clearly put thought into furnishing the property and has a pretty much all the amenities you need to travel with young kids. (pack and play, high chair, baby gate etc) . The beds are very comfortable and the kitchen is better stocked than 95% of the places weve stated at. The roof top deck is kid safe and and was a really nice way to enjoy the weather when kids are sleeping or have dinner without having to worry about them disturbing an entire restaurant. The location is really great too. We were able to walk to many of the major attractions in La Jolla ( Tide Pools, children's cove, La Jolla cove, etc.). There were also several good restaurants within a couple minute walk of the property (the taco stand, El Pescador, Clay Pot). Next time we come to San Diego we'll definitely be looking to stay in Lisa's place.

Very well kept and very clean property and a terrific location within easy walking distance to La Jolla shops, restaurants and beaches. The porch was great in the evenings. Everything we needed for a great vacation. A short little instruction card for operation of the washing machine would be helpful in the future.

We had a perfect stay at this La Jolla property. Communication with the owner was thorough and helpful. The apartment was beautiful and comfortable. It was a short walk for town, dining out, tacos, groceries and the beach. Nice, quiet area. Appreciated having parking and a fully-stocked kitchen wirh high-end appliances.

We had a wonderful stay! The place was located in a great neighborhood with plenty of things being within walking distance including restaurants, grocery stores, CVS etc. check in was easy and there's beach chairs and boogey boards available if you want to hang out at the beach. Loved our stay can't wait to come back to La Jolla soon!

We enjoyed our month here. There were a few glitches but Lisa was very responsive and most were resolved quickly. We loved the quick walk to the beach! And the convenience of grocery and restaurants nearby. We wished there hadn’t been a couple of heat waves but were grateful for the AC - it’s noisy but it works. At first we were concerned that we wouldn’t sleep well because the beds were lumpy, but we both slept better that ever here for the whole month. Go figure! Love that sea air. Also should mention here are stairs - fine for us but might be problematic for some. Comfortable couches. Good shower. Lots of kitchen equipment - some about ready to be replaced. Loved having the deck! Great to have the extra space to relax outside, though you are over an active alleyway. (quite entertaining!) Overall, a good spot!

Beachy vibe in a perfect location. The property was so well maintained and the cleaner was wonderful (highly recommend getting her regularly). The patio off the main bedroom is a great bonus and gets excellent sun. The internal laundry was invaluable and the kitchen was so well set up, we even cooked our Christmas turkey to perfection. The location was exceptional and the host was terrific, very responsive. I couldn't recommend this property in La Jolla any higher.

The Apartment was very clean and homey - with a great deck to relax on. Kitchen was well stocked and there are plenty of beach items available. The location was great - a quick walking distance to the beach/downtown. Only complaint is that the Wifi was spotty at times.

Location was perfect for me, walkable to everywhere I wanted to go. Bus stop less than 1 block away. Many restaurants nearby. Rental is beautifully appointed with attention to detail. Lisa is wonderful to work with. I look forward to my next stay.

Our family of 3 stayed here for 8 days and we never wanted to leave! Lisa was great to deal with and her property exceeded our expectations. She thought of every last detail and the house was organized so well! The house was super clean and even more beautiful in person when we arrived! It felt like we were staying at a boutique hotel. The location couldn't be better. Walking distance to many shops, the beach, restaurants are all within 5-10 minutes of walking. The upstairs private deck was perfect for dinners and relaxing, felt very safe and private!
Definitely check out the fish market right across the street, the farmers market at La Jolla elementary school on Sundays, and the sunset at Cuvier Park.
We will definitely stay here again!

My family stayed here for a week during our vacation to San Diego. It was perfect for our family of four. Everything in the condo is new, lovely and clean. It is well stocked and the owner has thought of everything her guests will need during their visit. Staying here made our visit all the more special and relaxing. We enjoyed having a wonderful place to come home to after days of sight seeing and amusement parks.
5.0
Our family stayed a week at this apartment. La Jolla is also a good place to stay when visiting the San Diego area. It was very nicely decorated, had brand new accessories and appliances. It was even better than on the pictures. It was also spotlessly clean. The neighborhood is quiet although most stores and restaurants are walking distance. It is approximately 10minutes walking distance to the beach or a few minutes by car. We made good use of the terrace.
I recommend the top unit if available. The noise insulation between the top and bottom units is limited, but it was not an issue during our stay.
5.0
I decided to take a last minute trip to La Jolla with my girls when they got out of school. This townhome is not only beautiful, but practical, has all the amenities you need, and close to absolutely everything La Jolla has to offer. Wonderful location and the outside patio is fantastic! Ample kitchen supplies, towels and space in general. Will definitely be back!
