Beautiful and nice surroundings. Caretaker ,Jennifer ,is friendly and very responsive. Inaccurate description of couch. I expected a futon. Couch was very dirty and by front door was dirty. She said she would correct the description. I would return. I suggested that she toss the old couch and table.

We were upgraded to a bigger unit which was recently remodeled. More than we expected.

I guess we had great expectations for this place.
We had noticed on the website The Gecko was renovated which was the only one advertised on the website. As to our knowledge there are six available apartments. We have no idea what the other five look like. They should be advertised on the sight atleast it should state there are 6 apartments.
When we arrived late into the night, our time 12:30 AM nobody was available when we tried to use the last digits of my phone # to enter The Gecko. Later we found out by a couple staying there that they were long term??? The couple who were staying at The Gecko informed us the host was in another building. We startled her awake so she thought we were thieves.
Finally at about 2:30 our time we were able to enter The Starfish. As we entered we smelled mold because under the sink in the kitchen was a leaky faucet . The baking pans must be emptied every two days or they spill over on the shelf below.
The knobs of the stove must be removed to turn on the burners. The stove door is rusted.
Any sight of fruit is overrun with billions of fruit flies.
The bathroom floor boards haven’t been cleaned in years. Paint is peeling off the walls and cabinet. The shower curtain is not clean. What’s disturbing is a swinging partial door to the bathroom right next to the bedroom. If a person sleeping wants to hear the kerplunk of a BM it’s fine!!
Wild cats roam the property begging for food. We were finally given some to feed them .

We arrived late at Oceanview. I had notified a different person than the host who is here.
We were told to use a code which didn’t work on our door. The apartment we were assigned was occupied. I had made reservations 3 weeks in advance. The host had no idea we were arriving and assigned us a different apartment. The apartment did have an extra bed which was better for us for 3 people. The apartment isn’t as clean as it could be but livable. It’d be nice to have a broom and cleaning supplies in the apartment. It’s great to have a washer and drier available. The location is very far from Hilo and Kona for shopping and beaches. I haven’t seen the host on sight since the second day we arrived. Overall it has been ok. Wild cats rome free.

Arrived at checkin time. Sheets were in the middle of the bed. Every towel in the place was used. Nothing was cleaned. Neither the property manager or the owner answered our messages until we received a call from the owner in the evening. It was the middle of the night for him so we told him we had borrowed sheets and towels from my brother who is staying with friends while he builds a home. We swept, cleaned toilet, shower, sinks and piled laundry, emptied trash. Did not bother to clean bugs out of refrigerator but texted pictures to Owner. He was to respond next day but we never heard from him again. Next day “Mgr” sent us code to cleaning room to get towels. We survived but it wasn’t fun. GFI outlet wasn’t functioning in bathroom so hairdryer had to be used in kitchen. TV is mounted on the wall behind the loveseat in the living space, totally useless. This appeared to be the best available in Ocean View - better get a rental car and a hotel in Kailua Kona.

Perfect for a single dude or a couple who need a place to sleep. Entry code provided didn't work, but after a text and call to the property manager, I was given the correct code and the rest of my stay was wonderful.
Overall, a great homebase to explore the island!

Stay was enjoyable and quite. Good WiFi convenient location for me for work and site seeing all there is to offer on the south side of the island.

Aloha, our stay was fun as well as fruitful. We bought a house here in OV.
Our only problem was we were given via your email, the wrong entry code. The code we were given was 3546……. We found the night we checked in we should have used the last four digits of my phone number. We got in only with the help of the up stairs people. They had a phone contact number, we did not. Before arrival I had requested such a number, but never got a reply. I strongly suggest a readily available contact phone/message number. Other than that and trouble getting the electric cook top to work, we really enjoyed our stay. The location is great and the newly remodel is clean and neat. I built houses here for many years, so good job. Mahalos

For the most part it was fantastic. The property manager was absolutely amazing! Yvette made sure I was welcomed and had everything needed for a great experience. I may stay here again. Close to Kona, Hilo and beaches as well as restaurants, gas and markets. I’m

Nice quadplex with decent driving distances to beaches and attractions on the south end of the big island. Only thing keeping this from a 5 star review is we ran out of water without knowledge the tank was low. They are on a rain water harvesting system only. Otherwise it was fine. Don’t let this water issue prevent you from booking your stay

The property had everything we needed and nothing we didn't. It's perfect for two people. The property manager/owner was busy doing upgrades so you know the place is taken care of.
Would recommend the property to friends and family

My friend and I stayed here for 5 nights and enjoyed our time. The space is small, so I personally wouldn't have wanted to share the room w/more than 1 other person.
When we first arrived the password lock wasn't the correct number, but getting ahold of the property management was very easy and they were quick to rectify the issue. The water is 100% rain water and is thoroughly filtered for use and consumption. The neighborhood is quiet and it's a pretty easy walk to the local coffee/breakfast spot.
Having never been to Hawaii before, I didn't realize how rural Ocean View is. It takes at least an hour to get too Kona. It's a beautiful drive, but a distance to consider when it comes to sight seeing. A plus side to staying in Ocean View though is you are within 30min of Volcano National Park and Punalu'u (black sand beach).

It was small and cute for a gateway.

Although not really close to either Hilo or Kona (75 minutes), it was nice to have a place halfway between them since we split our time going to either side of the island. It also helped us find some things that we probably wouldn't have seen otherwise (Punalu'u Bake Shop [mmm..good] and the southern-most point in the US). It was also relatively close to Volcanos National Park. The house was nice and clean as well as spacious enough for the two of us. The bed was comfortable, the shower was hot, and all the appliances worked. WiFi worked well and allowed us to use our FireTV stick. Very quiet at night except for the coqui frogs, but after a while, they were just pleasant background noise. Definitely worth saving some money staying here at least a few days if you're planning on seeing the entire island like we did.
Not sure why other folks were complaining about the neighborhood or the security--we never had any issues or felt uneasy being there.
The only two minor gripes we had were:
1. The TV. It's mounted in kind of a strange place for watching it and one of the remotes didn't do anything (bad batteries?). Not sure if there was any way to get local stations or not. Since we used our FireTV stick, it really didn't matter that much.
2. The porch lights. They're nice to have on when driving in after a long day sightseeing, but there's no way to turn them off. They are on a timer that shuts them off at 9:45, but while they're on, they shine right in though the patio door into your eyes in bed. Either a way to turn them off on that side of the house or a heavier/thicker drape on the patio door would have been helpful.
Mahalo!
All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this to others.

Enveloped by a variety of tropical flora, this quaint multi-unit home sits just off the main road. It reminded me of staying with relatives, it felt like home. The owners provided the right essentials to make the space comfy and cozy. We appreciated the trash receptacle and recycling on site. Overall, we had a wonderful stay.

Big island stay
This location was perfect for the top 3 things we wanted to see on the big island. I loved the theme, don't be freaked out if you see a realistic-looking gecko near the toilet lollll very cute and funny.

Very nice vacation rental!
We stayed here for one nigth because I did some bad planning and left a gap of one night on our itinerary on accident. Unfortuantely, this unit and the other two we stayed at on the Big Island couldn't accomodate more days as they were booked. That said, I really wish we could've stayed here for a few days as it was the nicest place we stayed at on the Big Island. The bed was comfortable and the place was furnished with everything you could need to cook which is great. We'll definitely look into staying here again when we return to the Big Island.

You get what you pay for
The unit is one of three in a remodeled three story home. The construction is OK but not great. We had ants coming through the bathroom tile floor. We lost hot water if the unit next to ours used it. The bed is a king size but very old. The lot (and most of the south end) is ugly. There are a lot of homeless squatters around. We were late reservers and chose this low cost option to the high last minute prices of Kona/Kīlauea. We learned our lesson. We had a good (first time) visit to Hawaii. We drove all over and around the island three different times. If we were to return to the big island, we would not stay on the south end.

Nice tiny unit, great for a quick stop...
Was happy to stop in Ocean View on way to Volcano. Nice single bedroom unit ‘Gecko’ with extra small bed in room. Main bed comfortable, very convenient to main highway, but not noisy. Get a meal below at Mehe’s Ka’u Bar & Grill,
